There were 0 fish stuck in that crate. There where probably 100 small fish using it as a shelter to stay safe from predators, and 1 larger trigger fish that stuck up his fin as a defense response to you yanking him out of the water. If you left them alone, they would have all been fine. Large objects in the ocean provide artificial shelter for ocean life. It's only smaller objects like straws that harm the sea life. If you see a floating milk crate, log, or anything of that nature, leave it alone. All you are doing is feeding those fish to the baracuda.

Fish can breathe outside the water, as long as their gills are wet. They breathe oxygen from air, but filtered through the water.
Fish can survive surprisingly long out of water under the right conditions. It surprised me too. They won’t like it, but they can survive
