Zebra played Hammerheads on Long Island a lot early 1980s. Recorded a live performance of Zebra from a radio station broadcast (WBAB 102.3) and wore that cassette out. Great song.
I remember hearing this for the first time when I was in high school in ‘82, through headphones with the lights off. I was an instant fan. Saw them in ‘83, bought a ticket just to see them open for Loverboy. (We left the front after Zebra’s set and just hung around to watch the girls dance when Loverboy came out.) I’ve seen them play three club gigs in the last ten years or so, still fantastic. They usually do a full set of Led Zeppelin songs these days so go check them out if you get a chance.
Thank you for playing Zebra. Everybody back then thought Zebra was the next Zeppelin in the early 80s. They sounded like Zeppelin they sounedd like Supertramp they sounded like Yes and a little bit of Rush. They were a very good band. Their other big hit was "Tell me what you want" in my opinion it was a lot better than "who's behind the door"
They actually lived on Long Island & there was always a Zebra concert. I was at a wedding once with many famous musicians in attendance & they were at my table, the friend I went with was also originally from New Orleans and was good friends with them, very nice & humble guys. That whole album is actually really good! Everyone on Long Island was listening to them.
Me and a pal of mine decided to close down Ole Man Rivers on the westbank of New Orleans after one of their shows in the early-mid 80's. We were the last two sitting at the bar when the members of Zebra came out from their dressing room to sit at the bar. We chatted with them for about an hour or so after closing. I bought them a few drinks. They were three of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet. Years later I was doing sound and lights for a local cover band and we opened up a few for Zebra a few times. Once in Laplace and another time at the Strawberry festival in Ponchatoula. Again, totally nice guys. We hung out back stage with them just shooting the breeze about music or whatever. One of our band members actually took drumming lessons from Guy Gelso. I have a few of Randy's guitar picks. Yellow with a bumblebee on them. Great times.
This particular song is a mega-classic EPIC song that everyone should appreciate and rock out to.. it's also incredibly challenging, melodic, inventive, and fun to play on the guitar (with a very unique tuning). Pure genius on this song!! You'll enjoy it the more you listen to it and just enjoy it. What an era. Nobody write songs this good anymore. There are no Queen, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, or Bowie-level talent anymore. Who has that level of originality and talent now? Answer: Nobody

Zebra started as a Led Zeppelin cover band and played all over the gulf coast. They actually played a friend of mine's prom-yes, I am old as dirt. I was fortunate enough to see them in late 70s at Enoch's Cafe in Monroe, LA, where I went to college. Just awesome! Keyboard player also plays bass on the keyboard, so you get a full sound. That is Randy Jackson's real voice and their 1st album is outstanding, along with live album. They held out for a contract with Atlantic Records, had many offers before that, b/c it was Zep's label. Never got the backing they deserved. Still play New Orleans and NYC. Just a great band.
They were sort of a cross between Zeppelin and Floyd. A lot of fun. Progressive rock like this was sort of being pushed aside at the time, and it was pretty bold of them to do something this ambitious. Meant a lot to fans of that genre.
I have everything they've ever recorded. But unfortunately they almost never tour on the west coast and when they do it's always in Southern California so I've never seen them live.
