It’s winter… officially closing down the cabin 🥲 just in time for the first snowfall ❄️ It feels like we were only here just yesterday. Jazzy is asking if you all think the floating house will still be there come Spring?
Well, imo, the good solid build should withstand this winter. And it's a la nina winter so it may get rough. I watch you on Sunday night. For me, a perfect way to end a day watching you two. And you two bring down my anxiety!! ❤
You girls did a lot of work preparing for the winter. Emptying the water lines was one of the most important things to do, you did such a good job remembering it all. The shipping container came in useful for storing items out of the weather. I smiled when Crystal was in the water and the dogs rushed to the water edge, it looked like they thought Crystal was in trouble. Stay safe, both of you and the dogs, love from Mike. ❤❤
Thank you so much for validating my grief at tearing down my first garden in years. I hadn't gardened in 15 years and this one was only a deck one - I'm limited by ailments of being an older person and on SS(very low income) alone. Rich husband long gone. I'm trying to dream about next year! I've stashed lots of stuff. I'll be watching you start next year. Thank you for the joy you've brought me all these years!
Plumber here from the frozen north (Maine) If it’s not to late, after you have blown out all the pipes, be sure to put the ball valve handles at the 45 degree position. The valve body will hold just enough water to split the valve if it is left fully open or closed. The 45 position will allow the water to drain past both sides of the ball inside the body.
For their property, after watching the installation, I would “ mist “ the system.. Meaning, pump in say a gallon or so and then blow out the pipes a second time until the pink mist comes out of the faucet(s).. with the ball valves in the 45 degree position as I said above.

Wow! I cannot believe how much work you have to do to winterize. I wouldn't be willing or able to pull that out every late spring and pack it up again each fall. You both work so hard! Thank goodness for Clementine and all of your large equipment to help you out!
@@Vanwives Clementine is a beast! I live in Michigan but I don't have anything to technically winterize living in an apartment with a carport. So hats off to y'all and your beast Clementine! Good luck with the floating house.
several ideas on the dock floating departure issue. Pick up 2 sets of plastic dock wheels. buy a piece of steel 2x2 or 3x3 steel sq. tube get some metal for the axel/wheel mounting. Use this as an axel you slip under the sections platform and pull in that way, if clementine has pallet forks, use them to lift the sections. your barrels would work if you had beach sand and not the gravel/dirt landing. what else you could try is a pivot arm idea. where u couple the sections together add an arm to it there welded to the axle. Then where u pin the axel and arm together add a cable pulley, hook the cable to the axel, around the pulley and when you winch it it should lift the axel up and under the dock sections and pull it out. The other idea is on the lines of a boat trailer. push the sections out on the water. back the trailer under the section, pull it in. Have stands made or some sort of blocks under there so you just back up, load it and drive in the water next year. Have "bearing buddies" installed or used on the trailer wheel bearings and grease a couple of pumps of grease in them in the spring and fall. When you pull the house in leave it on the trailer.. O sometimes you can find free sand from a sand blasting place if they use silica sand, I've done that from a granite head stone fab shop. Literally tons of sand...
Wow! I am so impressed by this wealth of information! Your post gives Crystal and Jasmine lots to ponder over the Winter months. Don’t you just love their work ethic? Hard workers , not easily frustrated, quick learners, and they give every project their all. Gotta love those two women.
It also could work better if the barrels were rotated 90 degrees under the platform. If the round side faced the land, rather than the flat side, they would roll like wheels rather than getting stuck on the edge.
Closing up the cabin I couldn't help but cry. Yes I know Mexico will be pretty & warm. The winters at the cabin are hard but y'all did get some rest. I hope you are both taking time to rest & enjoy. Install gate wheels or trailer hitch wheels on the side of your dock. Raise ‘em up when you put the dock back in the water. Down when you pull them out. Problem solved. 😁. Love you guys!
Just need some straps or ribbon to keep the barrels in place. If the wheels are detachable, rather than foldable, you only need one set, and can move it between the modules.
I was thinking the same thing. Pull out of the water just enough to attach wheels. Pull the docks and the floating cabin out of the water. Eamon and Bec tow theirs out to the deep end and anchor the docks.
Hi girls, I have a trick for you to not get any bee, wasp or hernet’s nests under your propane tank covers, line the inside of the covers only with aluminium foil. This is our propane delivery guy that told us to do this cause if there's an active nest, he will not fill our tank. Seems they hate aluminium. Oh and to save all you have stored in your container and outdoor storage units like garage, etc., I buy some original Irish Spring soap bars at the dollar store, cut the bars in half and throw them all around inside the storage areas, especially near your outdoor cushions and soft things of that nature. This deters rodents (they do not like the odor of Irish Spring) so,they don’t make nests and reck your cushions especially. This is not 100% but for the price, boy does this save you heartaches in the Spring.
🐝If you have an active bees nest 🐝to get rid of that you take a brown paper bag stuff it with newspaper shape it like a ball tie it off and put it where your bees are🕸. It reminds them of a wasp nest they are terrified of wasp🐝 good luck
I’m going to miss you both until you come home. I’m not much for warm weather stuff. I much love how you deal with living in in the Canadian wild and dealing with all the elements we have here. But I’ll be back when you’re back home.😘
Maybe next year try putting the barrels on so they pull out from the side where it is rounded. When you pull the dock out with the barrels end to end, the solid side just drags in the dirt. But I really know nothing about that type of dock. Just sitting on my couch watching your video! I hope you have better luck next year. Love you guys!! ❤
If you turn over the soil in your growing boxes now, adding a small amount of compost to each one, your beds will have a chance to break down the organics over winter. Then in the spring a light tilling, a little raking and your ready for another growing season.
My dad installed casters on his dock so it would roll on hard ground when he pulled it out of the water. They weren't expensive casters, my dad was cheap above all else so all I know/remember is there was a caster at each corner (the type that only roll straight) and they were mounted on extensions on each corner so they stuck out about an inch below the foam blocks. Hey, it was 20 plus years ago when foam was still allowed for dock floatation.....The other thing he did was groom a ramp into the area leading to the dock so the ground was smooth for pull out. No rocks, roots, etc. Also his dock was only about two lengths long, say 24 feet in total give or take. I'm sure he used galvanized casters with solid axles, no bearings and I'd bet he found some lubricant that was water repellent enough to last through a Duluth, MN summer. Hope this idea helps!
On the road again to mex. I am sure the anchor will take care of the floating house 🏡 to spring 🌱. I am so excited to se and hear the building plans.❤❤
Hey there, we really enjoy your videos!! An idea for removing your dock and floating house. Try using PVC 4" tubing as rollers. You may need as many as 10, 5 each side. I've used this method to move large sheds across uneven ground, moving it over 150 feet. I think this would work for you. Have a great day. Looking forward to your Mexico build!!
A big job well done!! So proud of you for getting the winterizing done, will give you peace of mind while you are down south working on your new project.Looking forward to coming along with you💛💛🐾🐾
It's fascinating to see what people on the other side of the world have to do when the seasons change. It's a concept I find hard to fully grasp, coming from South Africa, where we still enjoy sunshine even in the heart of winter. Definitely learning a lot through these video😅
Many others have put forward great suggestions for your closing up for the winter. One I would, if no one else has, is for the summer. The containers are known to have a problem with condensation. A good idea when you open in the spring would be add a ventilation kit to keep a neutral atmosphere preventing the condensation. Not difficult or expensive. I truly hope you will enjoy your winter in Mexico.
Thanks for reminding me to cut, hang and dry my oregano and mint for the winter. Now I can use some of the many glass jars I have sanitized and saved for storage. My kitchen is smelling incredible 😊
Great video and dedication in clearing everything away for winter. Thank you for the Tip about blowing air to clear any surplus. At least you can go away knowing when you come back all you need to do is get everything out again. Love to you both 💖💖💐💐xx

🎄Happy Holidays Ladies 🎄stay safe and warm. ☃️Thank you for your company all this year, it has been very fun seen you building new places. A big hug from the distance 🤗
Oh, the joys of the Canadian winter! What a lot of work you guys had to do to prepare. You haven't said much about Mexico but I'm hoping that you are going to start on this project this winter. Love you guys! 🤩
Your ATV winch should have a free spool option so you don't have to unwind under power to the winch. On the right side of the winch there should be a twist knob to disengage the winch spool and you can pull the cable line out. Twist back to engage power. Use pipe strap to attach the barrels and pull out sideways or build cages for them. For the house dock build two ramps like a sled to full the house dock onto it. Then pull the ramp sled back. Could also use same sled to move dock pieces in and out. To put back in water just push the ramp sled back in and slide house dock off. I have 4 floating dock pieces 8' by 8' on barrels and use a ramp sled to pull them out and up a 20' slope rising 8' with my ATV so I know it works.
you are both amazing! so much better than tv, I could happily watch you all day long 😀😀, now I'm looking forward to project new build! I'm sure your floating house will make it through to spring 🥰🥰 safe travels all 4 of you 🌹🌹
on our dock we used metal straps, the hafe holes already in it, an you measure around the barrel and attach it to the dock when its upside down. watch out if that area floods again those blue barrels will be floating away, also stake down your ramp and dock so it doesn't float away too
When trying to pull the floating vessel cut logs a foot longer on each side. This will act like a roller system. Then you can pull the house right out lol! I grew up in Alaska we had to prep for winter every year! Also alot of peppers are perennials. You just need to cut them down to Stubbs and cover them with mulch so they don’t freeze they should grow back the next year.
if you change the configuration of the barrels so they role with the dock instead of dig in to the dirt you can just pull it all out in one pull. So switch the dircetion of the barrells .
You might want to consider securing all those Barrels from blowing around. A good heavy winter wind will make those barrels wonder everywhere. You can save yourself from having to find them all in the spring.
I saw recently online that tomatoe plants are very susceptible to disease and usually have different infections by the time the season is finished. The advice was not to put them in your compost heap as you will spread the disease to your new crop. (Just want I learned online recently)
Consider turning the barrels parallel to the deck boards. It would slide ageist the ground instead of digging into the soil. If that didn't drag well, there are that would might set the barrels in with a roller on each corner. Just an idea.
Girls you have that nice tractor? Use the bucket and lift up on the dock house when you’re pulling it on land you won’t smash the pontoons and it’ll make it a lot easier pulling it out.
I grew up in Pennsylvania with the four season crap, then moved to southwest Florida for many years with ONE Season.. summer... after becoming disabled and old I moved back to Pa. to be near my children/grandkids... I HATE four seasons .. but ya do things for your kids sometimes ya really don't care for... I basically hibernate thru Fall and Winter now with the help from my kids.. Love watchin you gals and your adventures, makes this ole crippled guy smile..
For certain living in all four seasons (plus smoke/fire 😢) is an inside feeling💜 you got winterizing down! Finger crossed the house boat stays put!! 💜🐾💜🐾💕🌈💜🩷💜
Something to consider for your next garden and greenhouse cleanup at the end of the season. Cut the plants at ground level and leave all of the root in the ground. Then cover the soil with a tarp, commonly called a silage tarp, and cover it until spring. This will choke out any weeds and allow the root material to decompose And nourish your soil.
One possible suggestion....when you where pulling out dock....the barrels....if the round parts where facing the shore would they then pull out? Versus the flat sides that just drive into the ground. It would mean turning the dock peises 90° or setting barrels differently. Maybe to much work I don't know but the round sides would roll up the bank nit drive into it.
Our docks are not floating docks, so your mileage(kilometerage?) might vary, but it DEFINITELY helps to lift the front edge of the dock up when pulling, we use a short chain on the forks to lift up and then back. Good luck next year, have fun in Mexico!
@@Vanwives It would probably be a complete rebuilt... but I wonder if you could turn the barrels so they would roll under the docks rather than get stuck? Just another thought :)
My brother-in-law law in Ontario pulls the dock pipes out every fall. Ties a brick to the dock and let's it float off shore. The ice floats the dock, and everything is good in the spring.

Best youtube channel ever!!! Love you girls!!!!
I love seeing your cabin with the cozy fire in the winter. Sad 😢
🥰😔 we will miss it too
A big job well done!! So proud of you for getting the winterizing done, will give you peace of mind while you are down south working on your new project.Looking forward to coming along with you💛💛🐾🐾
So happy you are with us on our journey. 😊🐶
Awesome team work! Love you all! Thank you for sharing! Happy Thanksgiving! ❤😊
It's fascinating to see what people on the other side of the world have to do when the seasons change. It's a concept I find hard to fully grasp, coming from South Africa, where we still enjoy sunshine even in the heart of winter. Definitely learning a lot through these video😅
Perfect prepairing for winter ladies👍what's going on in Mexico? We wish you a wonderful Sunday girls, lovely greetings from Andreas and Balou xx 🐾🐾💛💛
Sounds like a good time! 💛
Great video and dedication in clearing everything away for winter. Thank you for the Tip about blowing air to clear any surplus. At least you can go away knowing when you come back all you need to do is get everything out again. Love to you both 💖💖💐💐xx
Jasmine’s looking pretty sweet and those chaps are inspirational everything that you have learned look at you in the last handful of years from traveling in cool off-road to your establishments and learning every little thing positive and negative on the way so proud of you both❤❤❤
Well as you say its come to that time of year when youve got to prepare for winter...Youve done an awesome job storing everything ....I remember when you first showed the cabin, which could hardly be seen with weeds etc...now its a paradise in the woods...you are certainly very hard working women and my hat off to you both...Stay safe and see you next week
Wow, you both are something else! Just wow!
Aww thank you Babs. 😊🐶
I had planted some tomato seeds in a pot in balcony but when it started to become colder I have put them into my room near balcony door to get as more and more sunlight that is scarce in late fall and winter season
So fun closing up for winter! You two are amazing womyn!🥰
Today's vlog is a sad day, summer is long gone and winter is approaching and myself living in the city will be left in 50 below zero. I have to re-focus my feelings that you two will be in sunny Baja soon and I will feel the warm sun from your next vlog. Love you pack.
Aww , yes winter can be long. Thank you for your support. 💛🐶
@@Vanwives, I support you all the time by watching your weekly vlog and your ads too. Will look forward to your Baja adventures and I know Baja salt air will keep both of you young and healthy.
You two are such a great team!
These ladies are Gold, they inspire to doing something offgrid. Absolutly love it!
Hey you two gorgeous women I have missed a few Vlogs of late! Great to catch up & watch you prepare for Winter ALL that compost for next year’s planting! So much to do ….. you both are role models for other women with your ‘can do’ attitude that has achieved SO much!! Take care & love from Australia 💜💜🐶🐶
Awe thank you for your kind words. Happy to have you watching from Australia 💛🐶
Right! Stay tuned. Mexico is around the corner. 😊🐶
So much to do, you guys crushed it! ❤❤❤
I'm only half through watching but this video is so relaxing!
you are both amazing! so much better than tv, I could happily watch you all day long 😀😀, now I'm looking forward to project new build! I'm sure your floating house will make it through to spring 🥰🥰 safe travels all 4 of you 🌹🌹
Thank you for all the hard work y'all do on these videos. Special treat Sunday!
That was a satisfying video filled with ACCOMPLISHMENTS. WTG!
on our dock we used metal straps, the hafe holes already in it, an you measure around the barrel and attach it to the dock when its upside down. watch out if that area floods again those blue barrels will be floating away, also stake down your ramp and dock so it doesn't float away too
That was a heck of a lot of work, brilliantly done! Well done!
Tomato plants are prone to disease. So it’s not wise to compost them because you could contaminate your compost pile. Just double check next year.
Get a freeze dryer for all your fruits and vegetables. The herbs are sooo yummy when freeze dried ❤️
Once again, my Sunday morning is off to a good start with Vanwives and coffee 🙂. I sure hope your floating house will be there in the Spring!!!
That was a lot of work well done. Peace of mind when you are away. Look forward to the southern build!
Can’t wait to share it xx
if you change the configuration of the barrels so they role with the dock instead of dig in to the dirt you can just pull it all out in one pull. So switch the dircetion of the barrells .
Super job preparing for Winter.
You two are Super Stars!!
Have a great trip down south and enjoy building another home.
floating house => attached wheels on all of 4 side and pulled it out. Just an idea
Oh we love that idea.
Wheels will work for sure. 😊🐶
Maybe use logs to roll the dock up onto shore? Y'all are so wonderful and inspiring! Thoroughly enjoy your channel! So glad I subscribed!
Well, this video was a barrel of fun!! And now it's time to migrate south for the winter. Wave as you cross the border! 🐾👋🏻
You might want to consider securing all those Barrels from blowing around. A good heavy winter wind will make those barrels wonder everywhere. You can save yourself from having to find them all in the spring.
Haha yes yes we did just didn’t have the camera rolling 😊 thank you!!!
Hey friends. Be mindful about putting leaves with botrytis, into your compost bin. More air in the greenhouse will help keep it down too.
Oooooo thank you xx
I'm crossing my fingers that next week we'll get to see the new shed!! Getting ready for winter looks like a big job in Canada...
21:50 could buy some RV/ marine anti freeze and put some in the lines to the outdoor stuff.
Girls you have that nice tractor? Use the bucket and lift up on the dock house when you’re pulling it on land you won’t smash the pontoons and it’ll make it a lot easier pulling it out.
True! Then it would be equal wait when it drops. Clem can only life 1100 pounds I think though…
Remember to segure the barrel containers in case of a storm they will not be all over the place. 😊
Great work preparing for the winter.
Much ❤from Wa.state.
I can't imagine living somewhere that you have to do this in preparation for winter. I'll take an Australian winter any day.
Lots of winterizing done so efficiently !!!! Jaz hope your finger heals well. 🙂
Thank you! 🥶 💛
Have a great winter in the Sun.❤❤
Thank you Patti, hopefully we can bring some sunshine to you every Sunday. 💛🐶
For certain living in all four seasons (plus smoke/fire 😢) is an inside feeling💜 you got winterizing down! Finger crossed the house boat stays put!! 💜🐾💜🐾💕🌈💜🩷💜
Thanks thank! We hope so too 😂💛
Something to consider for your next garden and greenhouse cleanup at the end of the season. Cut the plants at ground level and leave all of the root in the ground. Then cover the soil with a tarp, commonly called a silage tarp, and cover it until spring. This will choke out any weeds and allow the root material to decompose And nourish your soil.
Thank you for sharing your garden wisdom with us 💛
One possible suggestion....when you where pulling out dock....the barrels....if the round parts where facing the shore would they then pull out? Versus the flat sides that just drive into the ground. It would mean turning the dock peises 90° or setting barrels differently. Maybe to much work I don't know but the round sides would roll up the bank nit drive into it.
Our docks are not floating docks, so your mileage(kilometerage?) might vary, but it DEFINITELY helps to lift the front edge of the dock up when pulling, we use a short chain on the forks to lift up and then back. Good luck next year, have fun in Mexico!
Thank you for the tips!
As always another endearing episode. Who is going to watch over the property when you are down south.....
