I love it, but it's confusing since nobody was talking about it before I started becoming more aware of these things like a year or two ago, and now it's literally everywhere. Am I creating this or did it exist before as well but my eyes were drawn past it since I knew nothing about it??

I read an article of his a few years ago, just after Breaking Bad had finished. He said: "All I wanted to do was work. It didn't matter WHAT the work was. As long as I could get up every day and get to work, I knew I would make it." - Yeah, man, you've made it. YOu've most definitely made it.
This is the exact video I needed to see today. As a young actor, in college, I am always talking down to myself. I see the talent around me and how competitive our industry is... and I frankly get angry. Stay grateful and honest and positive. I know many of you have the same feelings I do. I hope my little venting on the internet related to someone and made you feel less alone as an artist and person. :)
This applies equally to other lines of work in competitive fields.
Feeling alone as an artist can be both a curse and blessing. Curse because most won’t notice you, blessing because your vision is unique and stands out.
Honestly, you got a point a very valuable point. I really want but want to get into acting because honestly I really just want to have the ability yo become someone else, but I'm really kind of impatient and I really hate being interrupted while trying to perform, as well as to control my real life emotions while performing.

@@Z3AL316 I agree with you but also there's playing stupid and playing smart. Quit your job to pursue something you're not sure is for you is stupid. Quiting a job to pursue something that you know you will enjoy LONG TERM and are willing to put your heart and soul in is smart. ALWAYS have a plan B and never burn your bridges. You never know what the future holds and it's better to be safe than sorry. By all means though, if acting is what you want to do and pursue and you know you can do it regardless of what what people say about it than go for it!

The gift he's talking about is the performance or portrayal of the character. If the directors or producers don't like your gift then they'll choose another actor who better suits their ideal. When he talks about confidence he's talking about the same thing- your confidence at who you think the character is and being able to present that.
Lots of people say that this only applies to acting. This exact mentality of selling yourself confidently applies to EVERYTHING you want to do professionally.
I will be watching this many times. The concept of not having an attachment to outcome is so important, yet so hard to maintain when you're dealing with constant rejection. Confidence is the single most important asset you can have, yet it's so hard to maintain when you have so many events happen that shake or shatter it. Keeping your confidence and detachment to outcome when you've gotten nothing but rejection, and keeping the thoughts of "if I'm so good and have so much to offer, why do I keep getting turned down and rejected, and why does no one want anything to do with me" from taking over is incredibly hard, yet so important.
This doesn't apply just to acting, this applies to everything, dating, self worth etc. Keeping those negative thoughts out is a skill all unto itself, and damn if it isn't so hard to do so when they're essentially telling you facts. "If you're so desirable, how come every girl you talk to wants nothing to do with you? Why are your online dating apps completely void of replies? It's been 8 months, and you haven't even gotten a date, why do you still think you're so great and desirable?"
The funny thing is, success is what gives you the ability to push those thoughts aside and keep going, if you don't have any success, those voices get louder and your ability to keep going gets weaker and weaker.
i think thats why theres this thought that says that winners win and loosers keep losing
Damn, real good points. I think David Goggins said something like, if you don't do the work then there is no confidence. So we definitely can't delude ourselves into thinking we're great value if we aren't keeping fit, improving our skills, etc (not saying that's you). So I guess we have to keep refining ourselves, our approach, and make sure we really are offering good value whilst practicing the quiet confidence and detaching from the outcome.
Every audition should be like James Spader in the office.

I really wanted a job in a play that would have been a game changer on my acting CV, I thought I nailed the audition. I just found out I didn't get the role and I'm honestly gutted. This video really helped, thanks for uploading it.

It's funny it's so true in a lot of other professions as well. Especially in freelance illustration and 3D work. When you know what you have to offer and present it to a potential client it goes much further. I've gotten a lot of work when I realized the same and when you don't get the job it's not a big deal. When they sense that "Hey I need the money, I need this job." vibe, your professional appearance drops so much.
I'm not an actor but I have held this advice with me for every job interview I've had over the last few years. Great advice.

Thank you for sharing this. This is the advice that every actor needs in order to grow and develop the right way. The trap is falling into a place of anger/resentment when you try to hold on to an outcome.

This is soooooo True!!! I notice when i present myself as my true self and I'm just happy to be there to do my part, not worrying about getting the job or anything but i simply am just enjoying the process or enjoying my part, when my spirit is calm, not in the state of need, either in an audition or interview I more then likley to get the job
So much words that I actually always cherish for years already! Talents is a gift and gift is a responsibility where this responsibility is to share your art with the rest of the world to inspire the people to listen to theIr own self , theIr true self, their SOUL! Once this ability is optimized nothing take you down, nothing! Your soul is your best friend, your best adviser, your best psy, your best everything... Because the singularity of your persona will be by this time accepted and understood.

Not really but I was in the second row and he locked eyes with me like 3 times and every time I had a shitton of adrenaline rush my brain haha
It is incredible advice for interviewing, pitching and idea, etc. If you stress too much about the outcome you can trip yourself up.. be your own enemy. But if you go in knowing that you have skill, that you believe in yourself and you're just there to present what you worked on and it is up to them what they want to do with it, then you can have the calm focus to do your best. I can totally see that. And I love that secondary.. the ability to genuinely share in a colleague's success. Because they didn't take anything away from you. You did your part and that is cool. He didn't mention it but it would also help to deal with the situation where you presented an awesome option, that you worked hard on and are proud of.. but the other parties decided it wasn't appropriate for their needs and they want to go with something/someone else. Then that's all on them. You did your job and you can walk away happy and clear to work on the next project. They have to deal with the consequences of their decision. Just so cool.. of course for all of that to work you have to believe in yourself. He said that but didn't stress it enough.. "If I ask any of you 'are you talented?' you had better say 'yes.' or you shouldn't be in this line of work."
I guess in short, do the work, prepare properly for what you need to do. Once you've taken care of what is in your control be happy with that . Don't tie your personal success to an outcome.. tie your personal success to what you do or don't do.

This is very powerful advice.
This is the best, most honest advice I've heard in a while, and it can be applied to anything. I'm 36 and love making art and music as well as acting, but for years I've neglected all of those things that have brought me enjoyment and instead focused on getting a "professional" career that I never really wanted to do anyway. I just decided to go into healthcare because it was job security, but after several years its burned me out and now I'm at a crossroads. I just want get a regular day job and dive back into the arts, but I'm still afraid of rejection and failure, that it's too late. Bryan didn't get cast as Hal until he was 40, and didn't get the role of a lifetime as Walt until he was 50. It's never too late. Its great advice that I'll try to remember; whatever it is you love, do it with no expectations of "getting" the job, work hard, develop confidence in your craft, and as long as you enjoy it, that's success in and of itself.

This is GORGEOUS wisdom and philosophy which need by no means apply only to actors.
I think what he talks about with owning who you are and what you’re capable of, I work with so many people who are unsure of their skill or unable to see what they’re capable of when we audition when I’ve seen them work. I enter an audition with 2 specific mindsets firstly the line “enter every city as though you were its firstborn master” and that I’m not anything and have no entitlement to anything, working is its own privilege. All I need is a chance to prove myself, and that fact that I’m always fighting’s exhilarating. It reminds your alive. That first line always comes off as arrogant, but it never is. It’s a way of understanding that I’m there for a reason, that I’m fully capable of rising to the challenge. It gives meaning to a process in which the actor has no control

I'm a voice actor, I always doubt myself and am surrounded by absolutely talented people. But after watching this... I feel like I've gained a little more confidence in my abilities and wanting go out there and do my best.
