You can do anything that is not expressly prohibited in China, you can take photos, you can film the police. Unless they tell you on the spot that you can't take pictures. . Besides, you are too nervous. It's like an adventure, not like a journey. You should think that China is very illiberal. In fact, anything short of not being able to vote is freer than in Australia. It's time for you to relax and experience true freedom. . You can even have a beer on the street. This is not illegal, of course. . You also don’t need to worry about Chinese police asking you for money. They dare not do this. I promise

As a Chinese, I have some tips for you guys:
    1、
On a high speed rail, you can actually order foods from restaurants near the next station, and they will be sent on the train when it arrives.
And don't buy any food on the high speed rail, even we locals think those prices are ridiculous. We usually bring our own foods.
    2、
Usually we don't eat at those restaurants in the train stations or airports, they are 50% more expensive than their counterparts outside.
    3、
If you really need help, you better ask people at the age around 20 or 30, most of them speak at least a little bit of English.
Most of the older generation people do not speak any English at all.

A friendly reminder from a Chinese person: If it's not necessary, don't buy anything at the station, airport, or train. It will be much more expensive than shopping malls. This time is a Chinese holiday, and there will be many people traveling and returning to their hometown to visit relatives. It is recommended that foreign friends miss the peak flow period to travel

The china and Indonesia built HST line started from 2016 and started to run recently with a $7 billion price tag at 350 KM per hour with total length of 147 KMS, it’s the first HST running at 350KMS/H in southern sphere, but China itself has opened 4 HSR lines last month with each is over 200 KMS including a HST crossing oversea line in Fujian province with total length of 277 KMS, China has 42000 KMs of HST by the end end of 2022 and will reach 70000 KMS by 2030, so they are building 3000 KMS more of HST line every year, its still a work in process, while starting with the Japanese Tokaido Shinkansen (515.4 km; 320.3 mi) in 1964, their network has expanded to currently consist of 2,830.6 km (1,758.9 mi) of lines with maximum speeds of 240-320 km/h (150-200 mph) only, 1 year of Chinese HST line construction is longer than what Japan has built over the last 60 years, yet, the current China hosted Asia games has cost $30 billion dollars, enough to build 4 Indonesian HST lines and built almost 5 more Fujian aircraft carrier.

I doubt Australia's population is large enough to support a high-speed rail line. The two largest cities have a total population of only 10 million, but are more than 800 kilometers apart. Especially considering that the Australian government will not choose China as the contractor, the cost per kilometer may be more than double that of the Indonesian high-speed rail.

4 months ago i would have been agreeing with you with your statements of "there are people everywhere" but having just visited Chongqing during China's school holiday season, I can say that Shanghai pales in comparison to the number of people in Chongqing. Glad you enjoyed it, my gf gets very annoyed when the world see's her home country and deprived or poor. Your videos definitely show the simple holiday experience that most of us have when exploring the world, keep it up!

Amazing train! Would like to ride on this one day. Wish we had such trains in the US but the oil lobby is just too strong. US is one country that could greatly benefit from HSR because it is a huge country and has sufficient number of people to make it economically viable. instead of HSR, we have Amtrak with 50+ year old coaches (except for the Acela) rattling along at 60 to 90 mph.

I get what you are saying, but I don't think it will be successful. The US isn't like Europe or Asia, and the city planning is a bit weird because it is made for cars. Everything is far apart, and the car culture is deep in the US. Also the budget and how fast it will be done....

I honestly cannot believe you guys made the travel in China without having the wechat or alipay. Hope this incovinence did not bring too much extra trouble and burden every time you make a payment. I feel like I have been not using any papermoney for almost a decade during the time I was in China. I heard that you could connect the Alipay with a visa or mastercard, and the payment amont would be based on the live exchange rate. Wish there could be more info provided then make it easier for foreigners to travel in the country.

Hello Josie, please remember to avoid any type of traveling in China during the National Day Holiday (Oct. 1st to Oct 5th, usually). That is why you encounter so many many many people, anywhere you go! Also, I saw you brought a ticket of 3rd Class HST tickets, better to get Business Class or 1st Class tickets next time, a lot more rooms enjoy your time in China!

Maybe you will go back to Indonesia and try it because next month there will also be a U17 Football World Cup here. Our people are very crazy about football. Your husband is like me, watching his favorite football match anywhere 😄😄😄

I love traveling within China through high speed train. It’s convenient and you can see the authentic Chinese life by taking the train as people come and go throughout my train journey - some travel for business and some for leisure travel. In general, Chinese are nice and easygoing and you can definitely feel it when traveling via the train.

hey Josie nice videos. I have been here (shanghai) for over a decade now. I have never travelled with these bullet trains because most of my travels are business trips and they always let me fly. But i do know some about these trains cuz a lot of people i know have travelled extensively with them. Regarding the small seats and tight space you mentioned: these bullet trains offer different "classes" just like airliners have first class, business and economy, and they call that 1st class, 2nd class, etc., and apparently you pay differently for the tickets. I have heard if you buy a 1st class you get huge seats that can be fully reclined and very roomy leg space and even offer adjustable foot rest - the same like the 1st class airplane seats. And they have different food/beverage menus for different classes too. I've heard people who travelled with 1st or 2nd class couldn't stop talking about it. However i have also been told although they are all bullet trains on the timetable and you buy a same class ticket, you may find with the same 1st/2nd class cars, different trains may vastly vary on how they're equipped, for instance you may have very roomy leg space but you just get a basic foot rest, while some may have LCD on the back of the front seats with which you can watch movies. But of course you will also find the tickets cost differently for a same class on your trains schedules.

In the bustling areas of Shanghai, the cost of living is high, and prices can be quite astonishing. Therefore, if you find it expensive, you can always consider exploring other places. If you feel that the seating on the high-speed train is not spacious enough, it may be because you purchased a second-class ticket. If necessary, you can opt for a first-class ticket or even a business-class ticket, and the environment will be much better.

I hope you enjoy your time there. I've lived in China for a bit, and it is amazing.
Honestly speaking, this is a mindset of many native English speakers that they expect everyone to speak a bit of English wherever they go. But well, there are just so many other countries with strong and rich cultures, and not necessarily everyone has to speak English fluently at all. :)

My task is to travel lighter and more suitable. Many daily necessities come from China, and even better quality and cheaper purchases are made in Chinese shopping malls. This is my small suggestion to leave more space to purchase duty-free gifts and go home.

I went for a walk and I saw there was one spot in one of the carriages that a spot where one of the seat rows should be but they took it out and it was an open space for luggage - but it was PACKED of big bags. I hope you find some space but I’m very happy we only had backpacks this trip!! 😂😂😁

No worries. Nobody will take your luggage. My wife was a bit worried leaving our suitcase on the rack for hours and we cannot see it. The Chinese passengers laughed at us. They all said "don't worry". After 3 hours we reached the destination city, and for sure, luggage is intact.
