  • The Peugeot 308 SW works much better as an estate than a hatch - but is it as good as the SEAT Leon ST?

    The Peugeot 308 won the coveted European Car of the Year award at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.
    While the standard Peugeot 308 hatch can't quite match the Volkswagen Golf as a compact family hatch, the Peugeot 308 SW has every chance of becoming a class leader thanks to its enormous boot, range of efficient Euro Six engine and more space than its predecessor.
    High-end Peugeot 308 SW models get LED headlights at the front and rear as standard, as well as big alloy wheels. Inside, all models get the same 9.7-inch touchscreen as the hatch that controls everything from the air-con, to sat-nav and the media system as well as a new range of connected apps.
    The 308 SW is all about space, and Peugeot has certainly done its homework in this regard. It gets a wide loading area with a low-loading lip, which makes it easy to lift items in and out of the boot. It gets 610-litres of space as the 308 SW is 33cm longer than the hatch. What's more, when you fold the rear seats flat, you get a flat loading bay that increases boot space to 660-litres.
    The Peugeot 308 SW gets four new engines over the hatch version -- two petrols and two diesels. The three-cylinder PureTec 1.2-litre petrol we're using on this test gets a direct injection turbo that makes 128bhp and 230Nm of torque. It's quite similar to the 1.0-litre Ford EcoBoost engine found in the Focus Estate.
    The 308 SW's 1.2-litre engine is very strong and responds nicely and if you press the 'Sport' button on the centre console, it gives the car a sharper throttle response and weightier steering. In Sport mode, a read-out between the speedo and rev counter that works off the throttle sensor tells you how much you're using at any given time.
    The six-speed manual gearbox fitted to the Peugeot 308 SW is a little bit vague and the handling is very similar to that on the hatch -- it's very comfortable on certain roads but a change to the wrong road surface can make for a choppy ride. It's also very dependent on wheel-size, so sticking to the 15-inch or 16-inch wheels is a safer choice than going for the bigger, prettier ones as the latter can thump around a lot over rough surfaces.
    The Peugeot 308 SW works better than the hatch as it's mature, grown up and incredibly practical. What's more, the PureTech engine is a real highlight but it's still more of a cruiser than a GTi. The SEAT Leon ST pips it as a complete package, but at £19,000 for the flagship Active model, it's certainly worth a look if you're in the market for this type of car.

    Beautiful car, great design, excellent review. If I had the chance, I'd probably buy one myself. Value seems pretty high as well.

    Its better looking than the Seat (a lot better) and the ride is smoother. I've just driven mine 403 miles on 5 gals of diesel and got out the other end as fresh as a daisy. The best family car I've ever owned.

    The reviewer forgot to say that if this car were british, it would cost above 30000 €...
    Some of his critics were ridiculous. Here we have lot of quality at a very reasonably priced car.

    European car of the year award is based on relative criteria so it is possible to compare S class and 308. Otherwise, every year winner would be some of the Ferraris.

    • @kristiaan1
      @kristiaan1 10 лет назад +1

      except if the criterion was boot size and practicality. :)
      I always thought that 'anything car of the year' must be the best or the most progressive example in it's class, obviously I expect different kind of progress in the limousine class and in the compact family wagon class...

    I would still choose something like a Seat Leon, driver better, looks better, has better and more functional interior, better engine ranges, has a 4x4 version and adaptive suspension option, and will probably be more reliable and better put together than sloppy Peugeot SWs I drive at work :P

    If I was suddenly greeted with that klaxon after opening the door without the handbrake engaged I'd die of a heart attack.
    After resuscitation I'd return the car to Peugeot and demand a full refund.

      ***** It's funny then, that other cars don't have parking brake alarms and that cars aren't killing people all the time because of it. Peugeot has invented a problem that didn't exist in the first place and I seriously question you claim that it is helpful with an auditive reminder... Especially one you can't shut off.

    • @burso83
      @burso83 10 лет назад +3

      ***** The alarm sound is complete nonsense and the owner should be able to turn it off in the menu. How bout situations where you open the door without the intention to leave the car?! Old school reverse parking etc. A driving licence holder should use the handbrake automatically without any reminders.

      burso83 Word!

    • @trefod
      @trefod 10 лет назад +1

      ***** It's an invented problem. You make it sound like an earth shattering problem of epic proportions validating the use of a warning sound reminiscent of the alarm emitted in airplanes to alert the pilots of impending stalls.

      ***** You don't buy a medium size estate car to go on the track son , you buy it for reliability , low running cost and interior quality and interior space.. and a little freshness on the exterior design is also nice. But this Peugeot can't compare with the others.. i mean the built quality in this one is awful.. i tested one my self and hated it. I prefer Hyundai , Toyota or Mazda anytime before i buy this ugly and unreliable Peugeot. But really , the king in this class is VW Jetta/Golf Estate . Test one with the premium interior and tell me how you feel after 1 hour driving.
