this game was the hot fire back in the days. We called it NFL Blitz on ice. Oh how the days have gone by with at least 4 friends, huddled around the gentle glow of the television screen with 4 controllers and the happy little red light of the N64. Memories.
I remember my dad bought me an N64 for my birthday one year and kept it his house for when it was his weekend to have me, we would rent this game every time and i found out the trick to scoring almost every time you shot and he figured out how to do the brick wall block, we never did trade secrets lol. Great memories.
This was a great game and I'm saying this as a non-hockey fan in a non-hockey country (Australia) it just had that quick and easy to get into gameplay back in the day
When I got an N64 this was the very first game I played on it, because this was the only game in stock at blockbuster. I didn't even like hockey, but I remember the crazy feeling it gave me to finally have my own N64.
Damn this brings back memories. Watching the gameplay reminds that this was a legit really great hockey game, especially for the time. Used to play this, Ken Griffey, NFL Quarterback Club. Damn, where has the time gone?
We had fantastic times with this game me and my pals. I remember the scripting was insane, if you were 2-3 goals up it suddenly was impossible to score and your opponent scored super easy. It was a game setup for EVERY game to be super close in the end 😂
Nostalgia hits Extremely hard here Best Hockey Game Ever! Period! Love how players rise from the Ice, The Announcers, Fights and the gameplay with speed burst...and above all the Net going on FIRE 🔥 N64 4 LIFE
I loved this game. Was one of my first games I got for my n64. I never realized before how much this game is like nba jam. It even sounds like the same announcer.
Just that first 7 seconds I’ll never get that melody out of my head for as long as I’m alive after blowing in the cartridge and the game going on … Memoriess
I recall if you hold L + R and wiggle the joystick, you could jitter the intro and start screen and also view previews of gameplay and a rotating splash screen.
I bought it recently. Not a bad game, but it takes time getting used to. But it would pave the way for NHL Hitz 20-02, which that game, was also released by Midway.
:28 When my brother and I were playing this game for the first time we wanted to play on the same team but when we saw that it said no controller detected With two plugs on one side and two on the other. two on the same side that means it’s on the same team but if one controllers on the other side that means you’re playing against each other.
This was thee sports game for people who generally hated sports games, it's just super fun, like Blades of Steel for the NES, NBA Jam and NFL Blitz, doesn't take itself too seriously, the only thing missing is you can't play as Happy Gilmore, take your skate off and try to kill someone with it.
I don't think I ever owned this game but I think I either rented it or played it because I had it temporarily maybe since a friend left it over possibly and thought it was ok for a non realistic style of hockey type game.
Just minus setting the net on fire on a goal and knocking the goalie into the net on a goal as well. Also set on simulation as their are penalties in NHL overtime.
why the hell is this of all games we have the only one that's full speed on PAL... You'd think it'd be the most obscure in AUS, but, I ain't complaining!
Does anyone know how to play 2 player mode and choose separate teams for each other in this game? Every time I want to play 2 player mode, your partner has to be on the same team as you and I was wondering if the partners can play against each other in this game
+Christian D Maybe you know the answer already, but here is it anyway; You have to plug the second controller in port 3 of your N64 instead of port 2. Voilà, now you can choose different teams! Greetings from Switzerland, friend!
the best fighting game ever made.
YES :D
You know a Hockey game is awesome when it starts with players rising from the ice.
+Sergio Romero LMAO that's fucking awesome!
And when guys are coming on here in 2023 to watch gameplay footage uploaded 13 years ago
RiSe FrOm YoUr GrAvE...
Awesome hockey game. One of the most underrated sports games ever. It was like the NBA Jam of hockey games.
cloudparter actually the NBA Jam of Hockey would be NHL OPEN Ice
Nhl hitz the best which is midway which is wayne gretzky 3d hockey
@@coreymorrison5027 not really because nhl open ice sucked. So you can't mention it in the same sentence with nba jam
NHL Hitz is the obvious choice
It sounded a bit like the NFL Blitz commentator!
so many beautiful memories. Classic game. 10/10
This game >Every NHL game
Definitely one of the best hockey games ever!!! Also, can't forget about the music either.
this game was the hot fire back in the days. We called it NFL Blitz on ice. Oh how the days have gone by with at least 4 friends, huddled around the gentle glow of the television screen with 4 controllers and the happy little red light of the N64. Memories.
Miss those days!!

He was a good dad.
This was a great game and I'm saying this as a non-hockey fan in a non-hockey country (Australia) it just had that quick and easy to get into gameplay back in the day

I remember getting into fights on purpose cause it was fun in this game
By far the best Hockey video game and possibly sports game of all time. It's unapologetic with it's graphics, really funny and fun!
Damn this brings back memories. Watching the gameplay reminds that this was a legit really great hockey game, especially for the time. Used to play this, Ken Griffey, NFL Quarterback Club. Damn, where has the time gone?
NFL QB club what a game!
man me too! I played both Ken Griffey and NFL QB club
Not really a hockey fan but this game made enjoy the sport a little more. Still play it to this day.
I rented Wayne Gretzky's 3D hockey n64 game at blockbuster when I was a kid.
This was actually the first 4 player N64 game released for the console.
For any console. This was the first 4 player game ever.
@@steelgunner2 lol not remotely true......even the NES had 4-player games
Dude the checking to this game was so damn awesome. What a great game. It was like football on ice skates. Played so much of this.
Man that opening music with that power riff. It's like "Cocktail" shredding with "Airborne."
My cousin and I played it everyday. Best sports game of all time imo.
the first 15 seconds of this video is pure, uncut nostalgia
That guitar riff unlocked some core memories holy crap!
Still looks good today. I miss playing this.
Best hocky game ever made. Fighting checking and scoreing.
The essence of a fun and competitive game.
We had fantastic times with this game me and my pals. I remember the scripting was insane, if you were 2-3 goals up it suddenly was impossible to score and your opponent scored super easy. It was a game setup for EVERY game to be super close in the end 😂
Wow this brings back SOOOO many memories!! Hands down best Hockey game ever!!
It aged rather well. Very nice!
This game was awesome, one of my favorite hockey games, anyone know of something similar these days?
“Tape to tape”on PC. It’s still in its early stages but definitely looks like this but updated.
The nostalgia! Thank you!
This game was amazing.
Nostalgia hits Extremely hard here Best Hockey Game Ever! Period! Love how players rise from the Ice, The Announcers, Fights and the gameplay with speed burst...and above all the Net going on FIRE 🔥 N64 4 LIFE
Bought an N64 in 1999 to play this and monster truck madness 64.
*shoots it in the corner*
"What was he thinking?"
lol
I loved this game. Was one of my first games I got for my n64. I never realized before how much this game is like nba jam. It even sounds like the same announcer.
CPU would always score on bs when the game was close
I had this game for N64 I really enjoyed it:)
Just that first 7 seconds I’ll never get that melody out of my head for as long as I’m alive after blowing in the cartridge and the game going on … Memoriess
*That goalies a wall!*
The announcers name is tim kitzrow hes in the NFL blitz series nhl hitz series and nba jam
I completely forgot about this game for the last 25 years until just right now...
I was fascinated by the animation of the players spinning out of the ice at the face off.
I recall if you hold L + R and wiggle the joystick, you could jitter the intro and start screen and also view previews of gameplay and a rotating splash screen.
I had a lot of fun playing all the checks in slow motion and reverse.
I dont remember the rink being so small that’s crazy
i don't remember the graphics being this bad.
First sports game I ever played. Always remembered the net being set on fire 🔥
Greatest hockey video game ever!
That would be Mutant League Hockey. This was the first N64 game I owned, though.
I bought it recently. Not a bad game, but it takes time getting used to. But it would pave the way for NHL Hitz 20-02, which that game, was also released by Midway.
Damn this game bring back so many memories
Best sound effects ever….Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!
Like the music in Cruisin' USA lol

Jagr is the only current player in the NHL from this game.
Joe thornton?
@Aric -Jagr
god this was a great game.
"The shot..................OHHHHHHHHHHHH...."
I loved this game this was my favorite game when I was a member of the hamlet public school the home of the hamlet hornets
You didn't slide to block shots, you didn't power check anybody and you didn't not the goalie into the goal. That's what I wanted to see.
:28 When my brother and I were playing this game for the first time we wanted to play on the same team but when we saw that it said no controller detected With two plugs on one side and two on the other. two on the same side that means it’s on the same team but if one controllers on the other side that means you’re playing against each other.
Used to play this a lot back in the day
"WHAT A GAAAAAME!!!!"
Game was so good you didn’t even realize it was 3 on 3 hockey
I remember looking up codes in Nintendo Power. Awesome game.
I remember playing this over a decade ago
Omg thank you so much for this!!
this was a great game back in the day!
I got way more invested in this game than I had any business being
So many memories.
My favorite hockey game.
Looks like it set the foundation for NHL Hitz on GC
I don't think I ever owned this game but I think I either rented it or played it because I had it temporarily maybe since a friend left it over possibly and thought it was ok for a non realistic style of hockey type game.
You realised there was an option for you to change it; where it was 5 vs 5 instead of the 3 vs 3 and switch the game options as to your likeness.
Nostalgia straight to the vain
There was two Wayne Gretzky hockey's for 64
UH OH A FIGHT HAS BROKEN OUT
This was a great game
Cool to see a goal lit on fire again but I know there's another one that knocks the goalie into the goal for a score.
1:14: Brazilians: Merda!!! Ta pegando fogo! (Portuguese translate: Shit!!! It's burning!)
Was that Tim Kitzrow?
Yes it was indeed him
VERY RARE The Voice of NBA Jam? Mr. Boomshakalaka!
LOL never played it before but it looks like a fun game
Automatic instant goal: Win face-off. Approach enemy goalie. Press A+B (one-timer pass). Goal. Worked like a charm.
You're welcome.
Mimics the current NHL overtime procedure quite accurately 😂 😆
Just minus setting the net on fire on a goal and knocking the goalie into the net on a goal as well. Also set on simulation as their are penalties in NHL overtime.
takes mmeeee WAAAAYYYYY BACK
why the hell is this of all games we have the only one that's full speed on PAL... You'd think it'd be the most obscure in AUS, but, I ain't complaining!
Omfg the memories
The NBA Jam of hockey, great game
Oh he leveled him!!!
At 1:48 sounds like the announcer hit puberty lol
Anyone remember the cheat to get the hidden team was Williams and one more I believe but defiantly Williams
This is sooooo polished for such an early N64 title! Not on par with Mario 64, Pilotwings 64 or Wave Race 64 but the next best thing otherwise.
This one is definitely better than the 98 version.
I remember playing this as a kid, all I cared about was checking people into the glass
i used to always play lemieux!
such an epic game.
Best hockey game should be ported to switch
It's too bad there's no hack with the winnipeg jets. That would be cool.
They need to remaster this for Switch and add the Vegas Golden Knights
Computer tried too hard to keep it close.
This, Mutant league n hitz for ps2 are the best hockey games
Does anyone know how to play 2 player mode and choose separate teams for each other in this game? Every time I want to play 2 player mode, your partner has to be on the same team as you and I was wondering if the partners can play against each other in this game
+Christian D Maybe you know the answer already, but here is it anyway; You have to plug the second controller in port 3 of your N64 instead of port 2. Voilà, now you can choose different teams! Greetings from Switzerland, friend!
Why did I keep hearing a guy choking on a chicken bone? Was that some kind of sound effect?
are ice hockey games still fun like this one? i wanna try out
yeah i have wayne Gretzky 98 super fast paced fun grab a 64 your thumbs will hurt at first grab nfl blitz 2000 too!
"The Sh- IT's GOOD!"
@dicc sukker I don't think it occured in this video but i know just from playing this game a lot that you will get the announcer to say it
What does "here's the draw" mean? Like at 1:21. Google doesn't find any results for it as a hockey term. Maybe he's saying something else?
EGarrett01 the draw is the faceoff where they drop the puck to start the play.
Better be on the n64 mini!!!
