I'll post the clip next, but RUclips is likely to shadow ban my comment, due to a link off-site. If this is the case, check thab's Twitch past broadcast history, and look for Wave Race 64 (8/394), and then fast forward to 3 hours 53 minutes in.
Banjo-Tooie always comes to mind whenever anyone mentions rubberbanding. In that game, Canary Mary's races require you to button mash, but she rubberbands you ridiculously hard if you simply go fast. You can lose even with a turbo controller.
Didn't think much of this game back in the day. But it's gained a second life as friends and I have discovered it makes for a fun drinking game. Every goal scored = drink. With the amount of goals in this game, you get tipsy pretty quick with a lot of laughs along the way
I appreciate you giving the hockey games a fair look even if you aren't a hockey fan. I mostly knew about "rubberbanding" programming from racing games but you gave a good explanation here as to other types of games.
Loved this game back then. The rubber banding was vicious. I feel like you could 'tought it out' though. If you played strong enough defense it was possible to prevent the other team from shooting at all. And there were some tricks to improving defense. I remember not checking people very much at all. If an opponent is coming straight on, its way better to just steal the puck from them, and you're instantly going the other way now. If you're chasing a player going towards your net, then hook them. The hook will tear the guy down and then also pull the puck back in thenoppoaite direction (so away from your goal). Alternatively if you're in the offensive zone chasong after a puck, the beat move available was the trip. This could also be used in place of the hook for situations described above. While a hook would pull the puck backwards, a trip let the puck continue the path it was already going. So if an opponent was also behind you while you were chasing someone else down, you'd want to trip, not hook. Trips were also crazy quick, unlike hooks & checks, so it was easier to get back in position if you missed. Really the only time I check people was if I was guarding someone who didnt have the puck. Hot them really quick, then rush the puck carrier for a steal. Then qhen you had a three goal lead, do whatever you could to prevent shots w/ the above. When you get thebpuck, juat dump it to thenother end of the ice, and try to trip the computer before they get it. When you do have the puck in the offensive zone you can actually keep thenpuck away from the cpu pretty well with very tight skating movements. The ley was to try and bait them into missing a check. Really tight spin moves were able to work wonders. Eventually you can amass enough shots that the game will let another one in eventually, lol But yeah, the game would outright cheat. I remember constantly looking at replays in super slowmo and seeing the puck quite clearly headed for a wide open net, only to see it reach an invisible barrier and then teleport right into the possession of the goalie, haha... They really didnt hide the cheating.
Loved this game, would play it with my cousin all the time, we are from Mexico and don't have any hockey culture at all, but we would expend hours a week battling each other... Great work with these videos.
This game was the first multiplayer game me and my friends really got into, so this video brought me back. Looking forward to seeing Beast play Major League Baseball with Ken Griffey Jr. (choose the Mariners) as well as NFL Blitz.
Excellent. One extremely minor critique, is when there is boring or repeatative play, I would prefer to hear even a very brief rattling off of how the games went as opposed to you saying that you will spare us the details. I understand as a creator it could feel uninteresting to describe something uninteresting. But what me and I think many others enjoy about these is that they are truly immersive stories as opposed to top down reviews. So we want the good, the bad, and the ugly, just keep us there in the story please :) and we will keep watching either way of course
I don't know I personally like it the way it is, I would find it boring if it got repetitive. But I would enjoy some clips from Thab's reactions, that would help more with immersions
I just caught my first of this series a couple weeks ago and watched all the most recent ones... Now I'm watching from the beginning. I'm excited to have an overview idea of EVERY N64 GAME EVER.
Hockey games were always the one type of sports games I liked. Anyone can pick up and play without previously understanding anything about hockey. The more arcadey style games were a lot of fun, and usually I prefer more sim heavy games.
I highly recommend playing any hockey game with any amount of friends, the older the game the better. My homie and I have been playing NHL 2002 on Xbox since ‘05, mainly because our favorite Mario’s on the cover #LGP. The early 2000s were incredible for EAsports. Tiger Woods ‘03, ‘04....for hrs upon hrs. Would love to see you master 18 at The Predator. You getting excited about a sports game in priceless
Such a good generation of fun local multiplayer arcade sports games!! I miss it so I'm building a game called HOCKEY HEROES that is an arcade hockey role-playing party game inspired by Gretzky's, HITZ and 94 from that era.
Loved this game. Me and my brothers played it all the time when we were kids. Pretty sure it was our first N64 game along with Mario 64. Should definitely play some multiplayer with buds at some point just for fun.
If I'm not mistaken, this was a release-day video game for the N64, and I got it because I was a sports fiend. This was the first game where I utilized Nintendo Power magazine to get all the cheat codes, and it was so fun to play this game with tiny bodies and giant heads lol.
yoooo this game was a banger! used to play it with all the kids in my neighborhood back in the day. Cant wait til you play Quest 64 and Mischief Makers!
@@jdraco1687 it's one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It has a great story and fun battle system. I remember it being pretty long too but I recently beat it during the pandemic after not playing it for years, and it's seemed shorter than I remember, but still an amazing game
hmm rubberbanding might be less exaggerated when the score is high. maybe idk. i remember playing this game as a kid with friends. the multicolored puck looks familiar anyways. i do know i played quite a bit of hockey games, as they were one of the most popular sports games because of the in-game fighting. The best one I remember playing as a kid was Mutant League Hockey for the Sega Genesis. iirc in that game, you could actually kill the players on the other team.
I barely remembered this was one of my first N64 games. I forgot what it was called, but I'll always remember I had a hockey game where you could blow the goalie back and light the net on fire, lol.
I had Wayne Gretzky 98 and I remember there was a spot you could shoot and it was almost guaranteed to go in regardless of the other team stats or rubber banding
Super Blood Hockey is great! I'm building an arcade hockey RPG called HOCKEY HEROES and it's number one inspiration is Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey. Power-ups, brick and walls and fire!
This is my favorite hockey game ever. Though I do admit I don't have the greatest taste in hockey games. My second favorite is Mario Lemieux on the Genesis. lol Your "rubberband" explanation is how I knew how to always beat my friends in NFL Blitz for the N64. It had the same type of A.I.
One way to steal a few extra goals is use your AI partners. You can “interfere” with the goalie by running into them on the left, they will push you out of the goal area and open up the right side. Time it just right to get your AI to shoot when the goalie lunges to hit you.
I heard of S.C.A.R.S. several years ago, but the title didn't tell me anything about how the game was going to be, so I passed on playing it. Edit: I still don't know what the game is about. I guess I'll stay tuned for another episode.
Oh, it's called rubber-banding? My brother and I just called it a built-in handicap mechanic when we played this and NFL Blitz lol - In NFL Blitz, you are more likely to fumble, bobble a pass for an interception by the other team, not be able to tackle as well .. tons of stuff like this game. Interesting that it had an actual name.
The first Ice hockey game on the N64, and an Arcade orientated one. Single player mode is just too limited to be really fun and not repetitive. The real fun part of this game was the 4 player mode. I'd say a nice ice hockey game on the early days of the console but nothing more...
Best example for rubberbanding that most people know is racing games; Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, etc. example: When you're in 1st in Mario Kart, you'll get crap items and if you make a mistake, you're likely to lose your 1st place. When you're in last place, you'll get great items like blue shell, lightning, etc. Super Computer Animal Racing Simulator should be... interesting. It's an actual decent racing game that's usually overlooked due to the shovelware-ish box art.
It also works as a catch-up function but I think Mario Kart is done pretty nicely in that you can still build massive leads with better skill and/or taking the shortcuts and your actual driving is relatively unaffected other than the box items. The rubber-banding to the point where it significantly affects your team's performance in Wayne Gretsky looked a bit more frustrating than I remember 🤣. It feels that way in FIFA sometimes when you're 3-0 up and suddenly your players will barely function and the other team makes a comeback but I think a lot more factors are involved and it's a bit more advanced than early rubber-banding.

I had no idea about that rubberbanding feature in video games, but it explains SO much.
It was an easy way to make an ai for older consoles. It's not used as much anymore.
