Nintendo has been a video game giant for decades, making classics like the N64, up to the Switch. But their controllers are often weird! Even Playstation, and Xbox's aren't much better!

What was your first Nintendo controller? Was it the classic rectangle, the dog bone, or the octopus. Maybe it was the sword, golf club, baseball bat simulator known as the Wii Remote. Nintendo has certainly evolved over the years -- but nothing more than their eye-catching controllers. So, now we ask: what’s up with their controllers?! And while we did just ask the question, we also have your answer, including why Nintendo will continue to release some of their wacky controller designs and how the releases from Sony and Microsoft have changed Nintendo’s approach.
Competing against the Sega Genesis, Nintendo increased the number of buttons, introduced shoulder buttons, and added rounded edges to the design. Basically, Nintendo didn’t have to do much in their early days -- people cared more about the games than the controllers they played the games on. Things changed with the introduction of the Playstation. Not only did the Playstation create a new standard for gaming controllers -- but their CD-based console boasted 3D graphics never seen before in a home console. Sure, Nintendo could have extended the grips on the SNES controller and called it a day, but they chose to think outside the box -- and create one of the ugliest controllers ever made -- the Nintendo 64 controller. The XBox analog stick design helped influence Nintendo’s next controller release -- the official Gamecube controller. The Gamecube controller is beloved -- but not so easy on the eyes. Join us as we break down a history of Nintendo’s controllers and showcase exactly WHY some of those designs are so terrible and still work really well.

Nintendo's controllers might not have been very reliable, but I will always have fond memories of my childhood.
And a ton of them are of great quality like GameCube controllers and The pro controllers and the NES and SNES controllers
@@King_Kitsune Yeah, at least the 1st party gamecube controllers are basically impossible to break. The original one I got for my gamecube in 2003 still works perfectly to this day, while the ps2 controller I got 3 years later that was under similar care started drifting a couple years back. The thumbsticks being different sizes may not be perfect for first person shooters, but stuff like COD still played really well. If they just added a select button it would basically be the perfect "everything but COD" controller
Wii controller is horrable
Nintendo controllers have, for the most part, been really great. I'd say there have been 3 slip-ups so far, and 1 of them is easy to avoid. The first one is the N64 controller, but if you can figure out how to correctly hold the controller for each game, it's simple and isn't too bad. 2nd, some would say that the Wiimote isn't that great, but you can just try not to play games using it or use something like a Gamecube controller; plus, if you really hate the Wiimote, why would you buy a Wii in the first place? 3rd, the Joy Con drift issue, which is basically inevitable for any Switch owner to encounter, and it stinks, but we can hope that they do something soon to fix drift.

Switch has NO ANALOG TRIGGERS, thus no good shooters/racing games for 4 YEARS STRAIGHT. Gamecube was the closest we got to a normal controller, but Nintendo refused to put buttons on the sticks, have a more generic ABXY layout for the other games, and no ZL button. It felt like it was only meant for Super Smash Bros Melee and not for the actual console. I haven't heard any rip on the SNES controller, it was PERFECT GENIUS. But maybe it's the lack of grip or Zoomers not knowing how to play games pre-1994
@@S.K.R.E.Inc. When I said ‘Switch’ I was primarily talking about the Pro controller. Which, I’d say is one of the best controllers of all time (Imo).
The GC controller I feel fits great with it’s console, and the button layout (although odd at first glance) is way more intuitive than you’d think. The only gripes I have with it is the single Z button, and the C stick.
And the SNES controller is just an absolute god.
However, these are all my opinions, and it’s fine if you don’t agree.
I just thought these controllers were amazing, and many other fans of Nintendo agree. But again, just my opinion.

I think if the N64 controller had the C stick/buttons in the D-pad's spot..i think it would be more reasonable than way. Cuz most of the time you stop moving around when adjusting the camera angle anyway.. so why not make the player HAVE to stop to adjust the camera angle and make them make use of a more useful option like the D-pad

Mario Kart 64 didn't support the tumble pack. The rumble pack was introduced with Star Fox 64 and came out after Mario Kart. Weird to think the person who wrote the script for this video probably wasn't alive during the N64s run.
Weird just watched this now and went back to the Nintendo website to see the snes controller for the switch has been restocked and immediately ordered 2 controllers.

As said before; the only bad first party controllers Nintendo has ever made are the Virtual Boy controller, the N64 controller, and the Joy Con (the worst thing about the Joy Con is easily analogue stick drift).

They've all been terrible. The switch pro controller was the 1st time they've ever made a legitimately good controller.
Even the wii u pro controller made the stupid mistake of putting the face buttons inside of the sticks so your thumb has to stretch further away to press them.
No hate for the Nintendo switch but... If you put your switch in the dock there could be a chance it can be scratched. So you really need a screen protector for your switch.
I'll say this the PlayStation controllers were always better than the Nintendo controllers because they were consistent while Nintendo had to reinvent the wheel every time they released a new console which was stupid. I'm going to say it here the best controller that Nintendo ever made was the GameCube controller they could have released the Wii with the GameCube controller and I would have been more than happy to buy a Wii

Actually Nintendo has always been creative with their controller. I think the 64 controller was great. It workt good with many games. The gamecube controller was good as well. Nintendo has always been creative. Playstation has good controller. But they always play safe with the same stuff. X box controller has made some improvements. However I do agree with the wii controller. Importen to use the harnes on the controller. And the harnes chould have been designed better.

Ergonomic controllers aren’t designed for “hardcore” people who will play 8 hours straight, they’re designed for prolonged use to help your hands over years of use we’ll prolly never have a perfectly ergonomic controller but it’s still a good goal to aim for
