@@thecianinator I've tried this and prefer the D-pad method because holding two controllers is kind of goofy and it doesn't feel exactly like modern dual stick anyway. But to each his own.
The design of the N64 controller is basically Nintendo hedging their bets. Grab the two outside prongs and you've got an SNES controller. Grab the center and right prongs and you've got analog movement with action buttons. The production quality of this is unbelievable AND you also somehow taught me something new with the explanation of how the N64 Analog stick works. Looks completely over engineered 😂 Phenomenal video, calling 100k subs by the end of the year. Quote me on that
There weren’t any games where you had to use both the analog stick and the dpad, so let it go. Games simply weren’t designed to use both. Also, my first console first person shooter was Turok Dinosaur Hunter, and I always thought that had an excellent control scheme with all aiming/looking on the stick and all movement on the C buttons. In fact, I always played Goldeneye in Turok mode (solitaire).
I always played FPS games like Goldeneye using left mode (right hand on analog, left on D pad) because this was like WASD+mouse control. You can still press A and B with your right thumb albeit not so quickly. Usually those were weapon cycle buttons, Z was shoot, and L was action/duck
The N64 controller is one of my favorite controllers. I loved how unique it looked, especially now with the standard design that all companies use now. And despite being weird looking, it was more comfortable to hold for anyone with bigger hands. The DualShocks didn’t get comfortable for me until the 4 and Xbox hasn’t made a good sized controller since the 360. The one negative is the weak analog stick after too much Mario party.
I will never understand how anyone can consider the Dualshock 2 a better controller. Both of it's analog sticks are in the wrong places. The N64 controller by contrast still has the best position for an analog stick ever.
I'm 39 so i can tell you. Back in A.D. 2101 war was beginning. During this time, the N64 was all the craze! "23 skidoo" us 90s kids would yell as we ran to EB toys, funco land, or babbages to get our hands on a N64. We loved Mario 64 even though it was a fortnite rip off. There was only one handle on the controller however at first. The thumb stick handle essentially. Its just, we kids at the time wanted to shove the controllers up our ass. They added three handles as a safety measure, but then we just had three kids trying to get one controller in all three of their asses. Hence the term "Couch coop". Since everyone knew "its only gai if balls touch" the parents didn't mind, but Shigero miyamoto said "Please do not do that". Much later on future generations carried this tradition on with the DS by shoving the stylus in their peeholes.

Interesting how Nintendo introduced the stick to console gaming (well, made it popular, at least) to the point that Sony and Sega copied it. Sega flipped the position of the left stick and the d-pad around compared to the PlayStation, which Microsoft then used for the original X-Box (a remnant of when the console was supposed to support Dreamcast games), and that layout is basically standard nowadays mostly because of the success of the X-Box 360, to the point that the only console manufacturer not using it is Sony.

The N64's stick design is so different from modern sticks and so prone to failure that we're starting to see something of a parts shortage for fresh sticks. Nobody makes those kinds of analog sticks anymore and they sorta grind down inside their controller as they're played.
It wasn't (isn't) all that bad. More buttons than a Dreamcast controller, even, shoot. Oh, hey, Perfect Dark also had a bunch of controller options - I remember it being pretty good using two controllers at once. I should fire up the N64 again...
I wonder why the N64 controller is regarded so controversial. Back when the console came out it was praised for it's innovation and ergonomics. I think we should judge it for it's own merits and avoid comparisons to modern controllers. Don't forget when N64 came out many of todays standards weren't established yet and navigating a 3d environment also was something new and fascinating. (BTW I got the same opinion regarding tank controls which also often get dismissed being clunky and inferior but work surprisingly well on games created for them...) Maybe it is really a matter whether one lived in that time or tries to get the pieces together much later.
It's because Sony did the same thing only a year later, on a more ergonomic controller, all based on Nintendo's Dog bone design that players were comfortable with but with hand grips and DUAL joysticks on the PlayStation which was already orders of magnitude more successful than the N64. The PS1 has one of the largest game libraries of all time. Nintendo got completely outplayed that generation and now that's exactly what the N64 controller is known for now: a controller for a short time when 3d standards weren't established yet.. and weren't established yet because Nintendo put out a bad controller with one analog stick so they couldn't possibly have been at that time. Before Sony, they were basically the kings of the gaming market. The N64 directly paved the path for Sony and it's controller basically became the embodiment of Nintendo's failure to compete that generation; and you can sure as hell feel that when you go back to play N64 imo.
@@uponeric36 not only Sony, Sega did the same thing just a month later on a more ergonomic and functional controller that has the exact same buttons as the n64 one.
I never was the biggest N64 Controller fan and I still think it's the reason I don't enjoy the console as much. The Transfer and Rumble Paks were awesome additions though! Also isn't it ironic how Sony essentially modified the SNES controller so Nintendo comes back to that design eventually? Even the MegaDrive's 3 button controller was made so to outrace the NES' two button layout. It all built up one upon the other.
I don't have an N64 but I do have 2x NSO N64 controllers and 2x NSO Brawler 64 controllers. The N64 works best for percise movement and works best with Super Mario 64. The Brawler works best for games like Goldeneye.
There are 3 handles, not because we have 3 hands but because there are two options to play. Outer grips for 2D games and the inner and right grip for 3D gaming. The problem is.......... they never made any good 2D games and the D-pad is really mushy to use and many games don't even support the D-pad in anyway. Thus 99% of the time, it was middle grip and right grip. They NEVER used this design ever again, which shows that it did age poorly. On the other hand the PS1 with its dual analogue controller, that is basically the modern controller. So props to Sony for being way ahead of its time.
@@ivythay4259 I know but oddly enough I was writing this comment before I watched the video. So you ended up talking about these exact points which was funny.
Also a 3rd way, for first person shooters like goldneye, turok, perfect dark, doom, quake, duke nukem: using the D-pad to strafe while aiming with the stick. Much more modern way to play them and works flawlessly.
I loved that controller For games like Killer Instinct i liked using the control pad which was close to the side like a PS controller And for adventure or flight games i never had to stretch my thumb a ways to reach the stick when i just move my hand to the other part with it close by

All analog sticks are digital input. Lol. Standard analog sticks have 256 'digital' inputs in 4 different directions. Essentially, trying to say the N64 analog stick isn't really analog would be like trying to say video isn't really video, it's just a bunch of still images shown quickly.
I might just be an out of touch 30 year old gamer, but who has to look at the controller to figure out what direction your pointing the analog stick, I understand the labeled buttons but huh?? 😂
The n64 controller is my favourite controller of them all Its flaws .. 1. Not enough buttons to truly allow it to be used with modern games of today 2.its stick, while being the very best control stick of them all,is flawed in that it degrades over time/use The L button ... ok please understand that the Z button IS rhe intended L button ... the L button is used as an EXTRA button where you use the controller in its primary center held use .. however, the L button is also used in its traditional use when you use the controller in its traditional held use for certain games like fighting,2d platformers and so on I for the life of me find it difficult and annoying when weird people do NOT gwt nor understand the n64 controller By the way ... the ps style controllers are garbage, however the sony controller has the BEST digital sticks even to the day however, the layout and dpad .... i say no more

I think we should judge it for it's own merits and avoid comparisons to modern controllers. Don't forget when N64 came out many of todays standards weren't established yet and navigating a 3d environment also was something new and fascinating. (BTW I got the same opinion regarding tank controls which also often get dismissed being clunky and inferior but work surprisingly well on games created for them...)
Maybe it is really a matter whether one lived in that time or tries to get the pieces together much later.
There are a lot of things that we praised in the past that didn't age so well as time passed.
HOW DOES THIS ONLY HAVE 800 VIEWS
absolutely adored this controller as a kid now as an adult I can't use it anymore.
Lots of memories with that controller. Funny watching young RUclipsrs using the controller incorrectly 😹😹😹
Great video
Amazing production!
Thank you!!
Better then video game historian
I don't have an N64 but I do have 2x NSO N64 controllers and 2x NSO Brawler 64 controllers. The N64 works best for percise movement and works best with Super Mario 64. The Brawler works best for games like Goldeneye.
My friends always were like wtf when i used a n64 controller 😂
Wicked. Loved the history behind this. The hammer had me rolling
Great video but now I feel so so old having played on the N64 when it was new 😶
I mean you are 4077 years old
It seemed natural with the DK64
There are 3 handles, not because we have 3 hands but because there are two options to play. Outer grips for 2D games and the inner and right grip for 3D gaming. The problem is.......... they never made any good 2D games and the D-pad is really mushy to use and many games don't even support the D-pad in anyway.
Thus 99% of the time, it was middle grip and right grip. They NEVER used this design ever again, which shows that it did age poorly. On the other hand the PS1 with its dual analogue controller, that is basically the modern controller. So props to Sony for being way ahead of its time.
yes, this was in the video.
Much more modern way to play them and works flawlessly.
this is your first RUclips channel???
I loved that controller
For games like Killer Instinct i liked using the control pad which was close to the side like a PS controller
And for adventure or flight games i never had to stretch my thumb a ways to reach the stick when i just move my hand to the other part with it close by
I use a Sega Saturn 3D controller to play emulators. I just love the way it feels!
Hears the ending music sings along "I wish that I could turn back time cause now the guilt is all mine "
I was already gonna subscribe but having Evangelion music as the outro made it mandatory.
I loved the n64 controller’s design and hated the PlayStation dual shock style controllers. I’ve been waiting for the dual shock style fad to go out of fashion ever since
9:24 EXCUSE ME!?
I goofed and forgot to replace the dialogue with "barrel roll" lol. That will be fixed in an updated version that I'll link in the description
5:07 Name of game?
Please and thnx you
Of all the first party controllers I’ve ever used, N64 will most likely always be the worst. Especially since by the time we got to them the controllers joystick was always busted
here before this channel blows up
You can't unsee this: the Wii's nunchuck is a detached N64 controller middle fin.
0:52 mario 64 image is corrupted...
its the video editor who corrupted it or its to avoid copyright strikes?
That was a rendering error! Unfortunately, RUclips doesn't allow replacing videos, so what I'm probably going to do in the near future is link to a fixed, unlisted version of the vid in the description.
We all know where the middle fin actually goes....
The greatest console ever made I traded my PS5 for one
I hate the Dual Shock controller... still do. To me it's so uncomfortable, and hate when I have to use it on my PS5. I like the more Xbox style controller or even the Switch Pro controller.
It looks like q backwards terraracytl foot
Retro bird ?
All analog sticks are digital input. Lol. Standard analog sticks have 256 'digital' inputs in 4 different directions. Essentially, trying to say the N64 analog stick isn't really analog would be like trying to say video isn't really video, it's just a bunch of still images shown quickly.
Excellent video. I look forward to seeing more from you.
Best controller ever
PUT THAT HAMMER BACK IN Y OUR PANTS! This is a family establishment!
Which pants? I'm wearing 73 pairs
I might just be an out of touch 30 year old gamer, but who has to look at the controller to figure out what direction your pointing the analog stick, I understand the labeled buttons but huh?? 😂
The n64 controller is my favourite controller of them all
Its flaws ..
1. Not enough buttons to truly allow it to be used with modern games of today
2.its stick, while being the very best control stick of them all,is flawed in that it degrades over time/use
The L button ... ok please understand that the Z button IS rhe intended L button ... the L button is used as an EXTRA button where you use the controller in its primary center held use .. however, the L button is also used in its traditional use when you use the controller in its traditional held use for certain games like fighting,2d platformers and so on
I for the life of me find it difficult and annoying when weird people do NOT gwt nor understand the n64 controller
By the way ... the ps style controllers are garbage, however the sony controller has the BEST digital sticks even to the day however, the layout and dpad .... i say no more
How does rhis have so little views? 😮
