This was one of my favorite songs came out in 1988. I was in my 20s. Getting ready to hit my 30s Life was good. This one of those songs where you kick back after a long day at work and just chill and Brenda Russell. Her voice is like smooth cognac. I'm glad you guys did this one😊😊
That's my favorite part too, Jay - when she sings "When he plays piano in the dark..." and the piano plays so hauntingly in the background. It's so pretty!
The male singer backing Brenda is Joe "Bean" Esposito , who dueted with Donna Summer on the 1979 hit Heaven Knows (#4). He was part of the group Brooklyn Dreams. He also had a song from the Flashdance Soundtrack called "Lady, Lady, Lady", that was popular. Brenda is a prolific songwriter, If Only for One Night, Think It Over, Get Here have been covered and where hits for other artists.
She also wrote Oleta Adams’ huge hit from 1990, “Get Here”. Joe Esposito of Brooklyn Dreams (remember Donna Summer’s big hit “Heaven Knows”?) does the male vocal.
"Get Here" is a beautiful song choice for female Friday! It was a huge sentimental hit during the First Gulf War, I believe. Oleta Adams has a fabulous voice!
Had to click and watch soon as I seen they were reviewing this song, its in my top 100, love this song, listen to it at least once a month for many years now, some times two three weeks in a row, beautiful music like this hard to find. And a see Amber and Jordon like it too.
Welcome aboard, youngsters! I have this Brenda Russell album on my Ipod, but haven't listened to it for quite a while. Thank you for reminding me to give a listen to this album tonight as I fall asleep. 😊
Brenda Russell came out during an exceptional time for women singers, and I always feel she gets overlooked. This song is So GOOD!! An amazing performance!!
I Do Seem to Remember this song on the Radio In The Day. Haven't heard it in So Long though ... Decades! Really Beautiful Song & another Great Choice, Amber! Hope You Guys and Your Family have a Great Weekend! :)
She reminds me of Sade and Anita Baker...... Hey Amber, a suggestion for Female Fridays is Dawn Sears " Odds and Ends, Bits and Pieces". Dawn was a backup singer for Vince Gill and had an incredible voice. Sadly we lost her to cancer in 2014.
Wow!!! This is one of my all-time favorite songs!!! I love Love Brenda Russell She is one of my all-time favorite female artist!!! Mostly she is a contemporary Jazz singer.

This is a highly sensual song for us pianists. One of my all-time favs. My husband and I both love to play this song on the piano…so much meaning. Thanks for posting.
I remember this song but it’s been awhile since I heard it. Gotta say, as soon as the chorus hit, I was immediately transported back to my high school days when I didn’t have a care in the world. I’m now in my early 50’s with lots of cares. Thanks for the flashback, however brief it may have been…
Thank you, guys, for liking one of my favorite songs 🎵 . It came out in the 80s, and I'm sure you two weren't then born yet, when this beautiful jazzy kind of love song hit the fm Air Waves and MTV. What I know is that Brenda Russell is a Gospel singer. It is a modern classic song, and the other manly 2nd voice in the background is the legendary Joe Esposito. Thank God what're are Gem Z generations like you that can appreciate beautiful type of music like this, because nowadays, we don't have this kind of songs nor artist you can see singing love songs and jazzy hits like this. The 80s has a lot of very, very good songs which kind of mellow and lots of very good black artist that made famous songs 🎵 in that era.
One of my favorite artists , she had a few hits in the 70’s , like “So Good, So Right”, y’all would love that one, but she found her stride in the 80’s, with “ Get Here( beautifully covered by Oleta Adams in the ‘90’s) , “ This Time I Need You”, “ Le Restaurant” , “ Jarreau”( her tribute to Sir Al Jarreau , if you haven’t discovered this legend don’t know what you guys are waiting on) “ Kiss Me With The Wind”, “ Stop Running Away” and others. She’s also wrote so many classics for other artists , and has also always been a staple in the jazz world.
FINALLY!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Brenda is a very talented singer and obviously writes beautiful lyrics..her songS "YOU CAN'T HIDE YOUR HIDE YOUR HEART FROM ME" and "I KNOW YOU BY HEART" have moving lyrics..a beautiful VIBE...Among the MANY fans you'll find Oprah..who taped Brenda as musical director for the Broadway production of "The Color Purple" ..fantastic vocals, heartfelt performances. Great joice, great reaction..PEACE!
Ive been looking for this sing for a while couldn't remember the name or the artist just the melody which made it super hard to find. Glad i pulled up tonight.
As far as i remembered, this was Brenda Russell's greatest song.. And it was really good, one of 80's underrated female songs.. If you want some 80's songs sung by female artists, I can suggest, Superwoman by Karyn White, I Still Believe by Brenda Starr, Starting Over Again by Natalie Cole, Till They Take My Heart Away by Clair Marlo, Almost Over You by Sheena Easton, Foolish Beat by Debbie Gibbson, Better Days by Dianne Reeves and many more
Brenda Russell?! Wow, she was my favorite female artist back in my heyday. She was a gifted songwriter and played the piano in her compositions. Still have a mix tape of her best material from 3 albums!
Gosh that takes me back....I remember slow dancing to this one in the clubs occasionally but what I remember most is listening to "Adult Contemporary" music on lazy Sundays and I could count on hearing this in the set. Great one for a romantic mix❤ Brenda's not only a great vocalist but also a prolific songwriter, with lots of other artists performing her tunes. In 2016 she received a Grammy nomination for her work in the musical adaptation of The Color Purple". She's also been nominated for a Tony Award. Lovely lady.
I absolutely love your all’s channel. RUclips reactions can be an oversaturated medium, but there’s an authenticity and spirit you all exude that’s refreshing. Watching your reactions to songs I’ve loved for years is definitely vicarious. Brenda Russell has a succinctness to her that’s fabulous. She also produced Patrice Rushen’s Straight from the Heart album which is phenomenal. P.S. I highly recommend Jam & Spoon’s “Find Me”. It would be an extremely interesting episode.
You guys really need to check out, Brenda Russell's "So Good So Right" the live version from the Midnight Special you'll see how talented she is playing live and singing!
One of the hidden gems of the 80s! This song is GREAT & deserves to be way more well known today than it is

Your comment and hearing this track has literally transported me back to.1988.
I am literally drifting in a mix of joy and sadness.
Extraordinary
I so agree. There is nothing like this anymore! This generation has no idea what Gooood music and singing really is. They missed out on the best.
Absolutely adore this song 🎵 💕☮️
It's a very nice subtle jazzy song to fit a quieter mood and not a bombastic over the top vocalization they were probably expecting.

This was released during my sophomore year in college (1988) and I still have it on my playlist. She was near 40 years old when she sang this song.
Really she was that old? Is she gone now?
Brenda Russel is still with us. She's 74 years old.
