fully agreed, a pluralist society is ideal for our whole world but power imbalances and manipulation of power in religion, politics, which would cause social hierarchies like the caste system, segregration, and discrimination by class and identities absolutely should be abolished because we are all human and should be acknowledged as such. but our beautiful identities and cultures should co-exist by engaging and interacting with each other and appreciation of cultures for marginalised groups should be supported and appreciated not silenced. race, colour is important, but our identities should be acknowledged through appreciation and freedom, supporting pride for our ethnicities and differences. in pluralism we can all experience our identities proudly because we are all seen as much human as every person around us.

As a westerner I was always baffled by the caste system in India until one day I asked an Indian how one can identify an upper caste person from a lower caste person? He said, "Simple! All have 2 balls. Upper castes have 1 extra".

Recent DNA analysis of dead bodies found in northern India of great indus valley civilization clearly established that these original people were dalits. But no media reports this.Aryan people never agreed despite the scientific evidence. So caste system is maintained for their own advantage. Most importantly these upper caste populations went to USA and other European countries but still practiced caste system because that suit their own purposes.

Caste system is deeply embedded in to the Indian psyche and reflects in their every day life. It is just wishful thinking that only a few percent age practice today.The caste system has survived for 4000 years and will continue to be with the Indian social system even in the days to come.This is the reason why India will never come at par with other developed countries because of its social inequality. There are many rich Indians whose living standards can be compared to the rich Europeans but at the same time there are more than 300 millions who are still living below the poverty line. In the real sense of the word India can not be called as a superpower if it continues to have this Inequality in its society.

I have a question maybe it’s stupid I don’t know anything about India really but what’s to keep the people from the lower cast from just moving to a different town, Saying a different name and telling people they are the higher cast? I kind of get the idea that Social Security numbers and photo identification cards aren’t really a thing in a lot of areas of India it seems like that would be the thing to do is there some big reason that I don’t see why they don’t just do that?
some dalits do this. but there are lot of other problems. firstly, most dalits don't have the money to do all this adventure. there other indicators also like difference in food habits, upper are vegetarian and consider themselves pure because of it. some don't even eat onion and garlic whereas lower castes eat beef. if dalits try to live in upper castes colony then upper castes firstly would not give them land even if they give then neighbours will discriminate against them by any means even violently in some cases.

Invite famous Westerners figures to india and let them give speech on untouchability then only my male Brahmins will listen 👂
All Dalit kids should learn to be innovative and creative. Encourage them come up with innovative devices and ideas. If you want to solve any problem you need to innovate.
Create a RUclips act play drama showing that Brahmins were like Dalits and Dalits are like Brahmins and Dalits in temple as poojaris and my Brahmins are untouchable. Make on video RUclips and show it to all Dalit kids that is is coming ! Another youtube can be a play where all caste people are accepting each other and living happily. This should be shown to all kids and so that they get a picture visual appreciation that it is possible. Just by talking and hoping for the best is not going anywhere. Need Action. Need quality of action NOW !

The problem is they are always looking for an old tradition to replace another old tradition. The guy says that even buddhists, christians and muslims still practice caste system or untouchability in India, but his solution is to... find an even older tradition to replace those, one that is allegedly not touched by invading Aryans thousands of years ago(this alone could cause even more division). But what prevents even this older "Dravidian" tradition to be stained by caste system ? Absolutely nothing. It's like they can't live without religion, they always need to lookup to an invisible being, or some mystical force. Skin colour has nothing to do, you can tell the difference by looking at the family name.
So called uppercaste named themselves as upper caste just like Britain named itself great Britain
They ask last name, most of the time it indicates. Then they ask the village then street, 90% of the time they can find the caste.
There is other way to find the upper caste, the upper caste wear a thread on the shoulder. Some time they touch the shoulder to identify it.
There are lot of remarkers Hindus have which indicates caste. surname, profession, area of living in village or city, eating habits(non veg) and many others.

Caste system has existed for thousands of years even for the British rule and the Mughal invasions. it has survived for this long because people want to keep it alive.

It is incomprehensible that a country like India should belong to an exclusive nuclear club. All the billions of dollars invested in a destructive force, could be used to bring about equality and justice to all Indians. Another contradiction is that India regards itself as the world’s largest democracy. How is it possible to have democracy in the presence of such gaping inequalities and injustices entrenched by thousands of years of religious practices? By remaining a reserve and isolated, the Brahmins maintain their cultural culture for a long time..
Anti-brahmin has been explained in terms of xenophobia, projected guilt, displaced aggression, and the search for a scapegoat. Some explanations assign partial blame to the perception of brahmin people as unsociable. Such a perception may have arisen by many brahmins having strictly kept to their own communities, with their own practices and laws.
It has also been suggested that parts of anti brahmin arose from a perception of brahmin people as greedy. Brahmins are stereotyped as "greedy, conniving", without loyalty but "always cheating, conspiring and plotting" to subvert others.There is a widespread perception that brahmins are "perpetual foreigners". Brahmins are the target of assault, harassment, violence and bullying from others due to the divisive stereotype..

There are many reasons. Biggest one is theory of karma , which makes people believe dalits deserve the life they got due to past life karmas and any thing they get to mitigate their bad situation is non deserving and kind of favor to them. This is at subconscious level and people hardly recognize it. But let's keep that for other time as it by itself a very deep and broad topic.Another reason is white guilt against racism vs Caste pride in subcontinent. Coming to the issue: because most people don't see caste system as an Issue or atleast their issue. They don't see how caste system has harmed nation for miliniums and still doing it.
For educated upper caste: they see some intercaste marriage between upper castes and declare caste system non existent.
Most of them know Caste system through reservation system and start hating undeserving lower castes because they do not know and are not taught history of the land and why we came to this point. For them it's unjust ( technically they are right it's positive descrimination in favor of dalits) and need to go.
They are not taught how for thousands of years dalits were not allowed into temples, segregated from society and only after constitution they got basic human rights.
They don't realize how this issue threatens national security as well( naxalite movement).
They don't realize how caste system among upper caste also is detrimental to the unity of nation.

They are not taught in school why India remain segregated compared to societies around globe due to caste system. There are similar things like caste in other countries but nothing as vicious as Caste system.
Example:
In my school ( one of the best in Gujarat at the time) mostly attended by upper caste ( jains, Patel, Bania, Brahmin) they would announce list of castes ( lower caste) and if you belong to any of them you go to office in the middle of lecture. Then they ask if your parents earn enough or you need to apply for certain assistance , if not you need to submit a letter in writing. Class used to burst into laughing when they announce these castes because most of the these caste names are used as curse words in Local language.
This is their experience with other lower caste. Teachers also used to laugh but missed opportunity to teach students that just how proudly they say their caste some are cursed to be in caste which is curse word for no fault of theirs ( karma theory comes in to play here) and that is wrong. No need to say No religious diversity as well.

What we can really use is diversity Training program like in US , starting from primary school to college and work place.
In this we can include all kinds of descrimination ( handicap, gender, race (north east people, ) , regional biases, sexual orientation and caste descrimination.
People should learn what kind of behavior is not appropriate, not legal, how to identify it, what are your legal rights, how can you help prevent it.
Media can help spread awareness too.
Remember : " Mile sur Mera tumhara" or " Chalo padhaye kuch Kar dikhaye".
School kids can have projects like making pen friends ( Facebook) from other religions, other caste, from different backgrounds.
Summer project can be to educate some one illiterate. You can be creative and sky is the limit.
Trips to local village where people still practicing these descrimination. This will create awareness and pressure to get rid of caste system based and other descrimination.
Dr Ambedkar said unless people share bread, birth, death , joy and sorrows together they will not feel cohesion in their hearts.
People need to know women ( Common women)did not have right to property and inheritance until constitution gave them that right. In absence of that knowledge they just hate Dr Ambedkar as someone who has imposed reservation for dalits and hate him along with dalits. In really Dr Ambedkar had to resign fighting for these rights for women ( Hindu code bill) and not a single leader of the time supported him and hindy leaders vehemently opposed it.( We were not that liberal as we are told, and we still aren't compared to West)
These things need to be discussed and debated. But how many social science students study such things?
In villages people still don't mingle in each others birth, death and marriage ceremony, seperate cemetery, seperate well. A lot need to be done.
This is a proven thing which has worked in US and West, can work in India as well.
Only change in attitude will bring equality.
We need to ask for this in every State and national level this should be implemented. There are other things that can be donebut that for other time.

Yes, untouchability is a vicious evil. But ridiculing Gandhi for calling Dalits "children of God" is vicious. And as to the Earth Mother worship, Hindus also worship the Earth Mother Goddess, along with other Gods and Goddesses, in the understanding that they are just various manifestations of the One Supreme.
Leviticus in the Bible also recommends untouchability for various situations but those tend to be for that day. Except a menstruating woman is untouchable while menstruating. Brahmins used to maintain that custom, not anymore.

And oh, read Numbers 19:11 in the Bible. Whoever touches a corpse is unclean and untouchable for 7 days. Similarly in Hinduism certain occupations make people Ashuddha or ritually unclean such as tanning, cleaning toilets, and others. Old fashioned and the superstition of ashuddha needs to be abandoned. By the way a doctor is "ashuddha " after touching a diseased patient and must wash his hands with soap before touching another patient. You get the picture. A surgeon is "untouchable" till he has washed his hands with antibacterial soap and puts on cap, gloves and gown.
