I have done a lot of this in various parts of my house matching my 1940s texture, but it's been a while so I was looking for a refresher. I think your work in the bedroom is going to come out looking nicer than what you showed from the hallway once it's painted. Nice work!
Great video. I've been taping the drywall in the kitchen but after watching your video I think I have the information enough to have the confidence to put the texture on so we can finally finish our kitchen. Thanks! It will either be a nice surprise for my husband to come home to or a disaster.
Great video!! I tried this method of texture on my garage and I Feel like I did an OK job! I posted the video on my channel and It may not be perfect but I am happy with the results!!
Very nice. One thing I was doing wrong is not thinning the mud so I would "dab" the texture on the wall and knock it down from there. Came out fine but I couldn't figure out the real skip trowel type method. I prefer a very light texture so I always sand it.
What I have seen is that different areas develope different ways to do each type of texture I'm in the Bay area Ca, and it's very different the skip texture we do around here, 👍
Yes, I would agree. Every region has come up with their particular twist on what is good looking on ceilings and walls. And over time, that may even change. Thanks for commenting!
Interesting ...I was expecting a sand skip trowel but this texture is interesting as well. I however like the sand skip trowel effects! I find that the sand makes the patches if you will smaller whereas your method leaves bigger ones. It's all about personal preferences I guess.
We added fine blasting or white sand to the finish lime for plaster texture finishes. Nice video you can tell you are a real craftsman !! Do you coat your tape with Durabond or anything like that ? I cannot work on the stilts any longer given my age etc. It used to be a feat walking backwards running a 6' browning rod without killing yourself. Great job !!! Thank you and please make more.
Yes, it works fine and gives you a smooth surface to skip over. Probably best to let the base layer dry first so you're not dragging any wet mud. Some people don't paint an all mud textured surface, but I don't know what will happen to it over time.. Thanks for asking
I know, in different parts of the country this texture and the way it's applied has different names. I learned my method from an old time plasterer who started in the construction trades 25 years before me. Plus, using drywall mud instead of plaster made it unique. It certainly fits in a plaster house. Thanks for your comment.
Thanks for your comment. I hope to put together a series of short how-to drywall repair videos and show a couple of more textures. I assume you've seen "How to apply drywall stomp texture to ceiling". A pretty basic demo of another texture.
It's looked good for what the customer wanted. Just got done seeing another video with similar texturing and it looked like ass. A lot of effort for me though. I prefer using a splatter gun. One of my favorites is to do a light orange peel, let it dry, then apply a medium knock down. It's looks pretty cool to have a texture beneath a texture.
I would not recommend using fast setting mud. First of all, it has a different grittier texture than ready mix compound, it might not dry as white as ready mix( if you’re not going to paint over it- some people don’t), and especially with 20 minute, you don’t have much working time.Maybe for a really small ceiling area like in a closet, it would be okay. Thanks for your question. I hope it helps.
Oops I’m sorry, you were referring to the skip trowel texture. Of course, that would be fine, because it goes on relatively quick and you would be painting over it. I think that would work great.
This is hawk and trowel texture not skip trowel...Skip Trowel drywall texture is often confused with a Hawk and Trowel drywall texture. Hawk and Trowel textures have more straight lines and several levels of texture flowing over one another as opposed to the distinct circles that define a true Skip Trowel texture. Skip Trowel drywall texture at times resembles a very thin Santa Fe texture however they are not the same. The main difference is the percent coverage difference between Santa Fe and Skip Trowel.
You are always supposed to run the angle box over the tape in the corner or at least run your 6" sometimes I'll run a 5" if I'm doing a small room addition and taping with a banjo. This guy is cutting corners by putting a coat of mud with a skip trowel over the angle. I would never do this! He is skipping a complete operation of drywall.
Good question. Maybe on a ceiling it would give a little texture/character that looks different than smooth/plain. It’s all personal preference I’m sure. On walls, it might be what someone wants for a Mediterranean look, or it might be too much.
Look at all these negative comments from.people that I bet can't even texture aye aye aye why are drywaller and painters just the worst complainers I've ever seen I though trim carpenters were bad
Eeek, not for me! It looks like a complete mess. I live in Phoenix where skip trowel finish is the standard. I've never seen anything as bad as this. Maybe personal preference, but the pros make it look so much easier and so much more professional.
Ow all you've done is mess up a descent finish if it were sanded bro it eas was okay before man promise me you'll neva eva do that to a level four finish again guy...... Mat the gib stopper
Yeah, orange peel and knockdown are fine. This owner just wanted to match his existing finish in the rest of the house. It's from 1940 and really fixed up nice, so I gave him one to match what he had.
I live in florida and i aint never seen orange peel on a cieling...that shit gets put on walls....and it looks like shit.....this guys texture looks fine

L Lira Thanks for your positive comment! I like sharing my experience and getting feedback from people like you who have done some similar projects.
Your video made me decide to use your method rather than seejanedrill's method. Yours gets a great effect while using a lot less mud. Thanks!

How did it turn out?
Sweet. Very helpful. Gonna try this out this weekend. Thanks!
Great video! Thanks for explaining this, I have it one room and wasn't even sure what it was called much less how to recreate it.
Glad if that helped you!

Thank you for taking the time to show this!!
You are welcome!
I Know, I always use a variable low speed drill and a mixing paddle. I was just demonstrating a quick way to mix a little bit of mud.
Well done video straight to the point thank you

No skim coat first? This will be so easy!!! Thanks🙏

Great video! I only use pro-form, denser and leaves less pocks than plus 3. Also, to me it's got a nice raw pumpkin scent to it 😊😂
Great video thank u
7:08 I did a flat ceiling that looked justi like this!!
I've done some walls like that except added sand to the mud. Looks good
I Roll it entirety using a thick nap paint roller size 3/4 thick. then go back and technically skip trawl .

@@williamsalvaggio4621 thanks for letting me know that you enjoyed it!
Should I prime outdoor ceiling before adding the texture?
It’s a good idea, and paint over texture with a good exterior paint. It will last a lot longer protected.
Very nice work,thanks.
Rayah Bilal Thanks for your nice comment!
My question is how much is the price for a living room that’s ceilings and 4 walls
Is it possible to do the same method but do an initial layer of complete mud just as a base and then do the skip over that?
Yes, it works fine and gives you a smooth surface to skip over. Probably best to let the base layer dry first so you're not dragging any wet mud. Some people don't paint an all mud textured surface, but I don't know what will happen to it over time.. Thanks for asking
@@swissbanjoman you can mix paint into it instead of water to make it more resilient.
Where'd u get such a flat brush
That’s a trowel in my hand, not a brush.

Question can i use mortar mix in paint to do the same thing?
You can certaily try, id hate to be the guy doing a ceiling with that combination of materials though
Gracias
You're probably right, but that's what people around our area call it. Also, a version with sand mixed in the mud that actually skips. Thanks
Is this just regular drywall mud?
Yes, all purpose ready mix, thinned down like pancake batter or a little heavier.
@@swissbanjoman Thanks, really appreciate your help!

They make mixing drills.
Finally had to turn off the sound; volume is all over the place, and there's an annoying electronic clicking in the background.
Thank you for taking the to share!
Thank you, John6283a, for watching and giving a positive comment!
Thank you!!
Nathanial Fairman I appreciate your comment! Thanks
why do t u use a drill to mix??? much easier n faster..
It certainly is, but I was just mixing a little bit and demonstrating how thin to make the mud. Thanks for your inquiry.
Can you use 20 minute.

This not a skip.... this is a old style Mexican stucco style texture...
Actually it's a skip trowel method to get santafe style. I think he represented his video accurately.
It has lots of names. But one of them "isn't" old style Mexican stucco style texture, lol

Thank you for many Thumbs Up!!!
that's not skip trowel
That's not the skip trowel I was taught, on the west cost....that's more like an imperfect smooth, kinda
If this is not skip trowel, what is skip trowel?
For starters skip trowel uses sanded the vast majority of the time
