I’ve been finishing drywall for 25 years. I have my own business and I am considered the best at what I do in my area. I usually laugh at most of the “drywall how to” videos because it’s obvious that most people don’t know how to do what they are instructing others to do. However this guy really knows what he is talking about. Very good instructional video my man.

Why did you put a skim coat of mud up there first? Looks better if you apply it on your towel from you tray or halk to the wall in smaller amounts as you go. Speaking for repairs or small areas. I could see why you would maybe roll mud on the wall in new construction for speed.

Just finished work, came home and did the yard work, and now it is time to do the laundry which consists of 7 pairs of painters shorts and 10+ shirts. One weeks worth........This video is bad ass. All professional painters should watch it, and all drywall professionals should watch it as well.

Exactly what I was looking for. We have to patch an area of a half bathroom and I now need to texture it to match the rest of the wall. Never knew what it was called, but its all over our house. The downside is that we were too lazy to sand down any ridges, bumps, imperfections, veins, etc when we first built our house. Ive always hated my walls due that reason. Starting w/my sons bedroom, I sanded down the texture until it was smooth. I love it now as I was able to get rid of many of the imperfections and it is now smooth. I've since done the hall, the half bath and my daughters bedroom. I have a ways to go and will have to patch a few areas along the way, but its something Im looking forward to. Thanks for the video!

Quick update I just Revisited the two patches I needed to do and with 25 years experience and watching what you just did I knocked it out with ease I mean I'm expert already. You know how you sometimes screw up finishing plaster and you by accident create what you see on the wall for the life of me I couldn't do it I had a sponge a brush putty knife I even used my hand I just couldn't do it but I knew I had seen that texture before and sure enough just press the trial or even a piece of wood against the 8th inch or quarter inch deep area and just smear around and random directions and you're good to go dumb easy. Having said that still I wouldn't put this s*** on the wall especially a brand new wall. Cheers mate

steven piehl Interesting. I’ve gone to a faux finishing school for a week and the venetian plaster we did used, actual venetian plaster products and it comes out smooth with a mottled slightly shiny burnished appearance. I plan on doing a video about that one day soon. And I’ll have to do a faux finish on this texture for sure and demo that.
There is a $2 million home in our area that we have considered trying to buy one day, and it has a finish very much like what you’re describing.

That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement and thank you for your service kilted guy! We had a lil bit of an overlap there but evidently we were probly stationed at different bases. The only base that would come close to us both being at at the same time would have been when I was assigned to the 33rd TFW at Eglin AFB in Ft. Walton Beach, Fl. My other assignments were at an ATC base and a cargo unit flying C-141’s and they didn’t have the armament that the F-15’s I worked on at Eglin did but that base is more testing than anything anymore.
My brother was stationed there same time I was except he was an officer and I was a measly enlisted NCO/Airmen. He was an electrical engineer and worked on the design and testing of many of the armament systems both missle design/testing/accuracy and the radar systems used on the F-15/F-16 as well as any other fighter that had armaments strapped to its fuselage. He’s been able to fly in a whole slew of fun aircraft for testing purposes and is still there to this day doing the same work but as a civilian contractor 30 years later.
Those were good days and I wish I could have stayed longer, hindsight is 20/20 tho isn’t it!! Oh well, good memories anyways Brother. Take care buddy and stay safe and keep those awesome Sheetrock videos coming. I learn so much from you every time I watch one and I thank you for that!!

Don Pfeiffer well I was trained at Keesler twice stationed at FE Warren from 85-87, then Kirkland from 87-90, then a little guard unit near Seattle from 90-91. I was going to go to OTS but things changed. It’s kind of a long story but basically when I went through the MEPS they said I was colorblind by one card to many. That forced me into personnel which was my first trip to Keesler Air Force Base. Then I proved to them I wasn’t colorblind after being on active duty for about a year and a half, and I wanted retrained into electronic warfare which is what I came in for.
I had been taking night classes to finish my degree and go through OTS. But by retraining I had to go in to the Air national guard on the palace Chase program, which killed those officer plans. But I had the best time of my career going through the electronic warfare school. I made Sergeant just before leaving so I got to stay in the NCO barracks, and drive my new iRoc Z Camaro daily. Anyway I graduated with honors from that class, as I like a good challenge. And I enjoyed working the flightline on our old A7 planes. And because I was in the air National Guard, I was back in Drywall and the economy tanked after several years so I moved to Seattle Washington. The only planes near that location were transport planes so I ended up in a little telecommunications squadron and finished out my last year back in personnel. I got out in June 1991 right as desert storm was really taking off.

You should be able to apply it directly over the plywood but sand it with 60 or 80 grit sandpaper first and remove the dust.

Thank you for this video! Do you need to put down a bonding primer/ bonding agent first? We just bought an old house and some of the plaster finish was crumbling. When we took off the crumbling bits, there was a super old looking form of drywall: a brownish/reddish drywall board. Wondering if we should put a bonding agent first before the mud.
    Thank you!

At this point you have probably long finish this project but a bit of advice actually a secret mix joint compound with diamond Veneer plaster and it will allow it to bond to anything but if you're using just plaster on a painted surface it will not Bond this way you can skip the bonding agent. Or you can just use 45 or 90 minute joint compound this is very flexible and allows it to bond to anything
