I did my bathroom this week in 5 days days. Days 1 & 2 were Skim Coats and I had to sand the coats after (I'm an amateur). I have never picked up a trowel before and your videos allowed me to gain a valuable skill. Now when I move into my master bedroom and nursery I might be more skilled. Thank you for sharing your videos.
I’m a professional hi end painter in New York for 18 years i just moved to Florida and all the ceilings are with texture your videos have helped me very much thanks I really appreciate what you do
DIY'r. I bought a home that needed some upgrades and freshening. The entire house was painted a flat manilla envelope color from floor to ceiling, including most trim, doors, stairs railings, light switches, light fixtures, electrical outlets, etc. It was blah and dated the house, not to mention the numerous fire hazards that needed attention. Little by little, I am going thru and updating. It's an extremely large home so it will take some time but I bought it to update and flip. My house includes 2 full-size insuites, and lucky me - it is in every bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen! They were not repaired very well and are an eyesore to look at. I was searching the internet for ideas of what I could do to make the ceilings look more professional, not cost a fortune, and appear more modern when I came across your videos. Thank you so much!! They are incredibly helpful. I truly appreciate the way you breakdown every step and provide tips to help us along the way! Cheers! Miranda
Bro you are the shit. I'm a contractor reno guy. Wish I had you on my team. Own my own biz in tampa. I learned alot today. Thanks. Nvr skim coated before. You gave me ideas. I'm a follower now. Love your vids. Clear. Concise. Educational... bravo. Thanks for sharing ur experience
Thanks for making these videos! I am currently renovating an old house from the 1940s.I hung all of the drywall and am now doing finishing. I have watched a lot of youtube videos about all sorts of construction related topics and I found yours to be the most useful...
Hi Paul, having tried to match existing skip trowel in my home, your video and instruction clicked. It is the sand that I was missing which I can understand prevents feathering and maintains consistent layer thickness. Your video is exactly what I needed, having tried and had reasonable success, I am now ready to wrap up some more wall repairs and am sure it will go faster and easier. Thank you!
Great Video, I'm pretty good at smooth wall. Never have had the opportunity to do skip trowel till now. I've been doing Handy Man work lately. Built a wall and now I'm going to match the existing skip trowel now after watching your video. Great job on the Video. Well explained. Thanks!
Hi I'm a professional painter and I just started learning how to texture ceilings and walls , this definitely takes alot of practice, but once you get it, its pretty fun and easy ! Thanks for the tutorial!
I'm a flooring contractor but working on other aspects of homes as well. I left you a question about diagonal ceiling crack repairs, and will want to properly texture when the repair is done and ceiling floated. You present all of this very clearly and I appriciate all the information. Thank you, Paul!
Retired union carpenter/superintendent handyman home rehabber. I hate ceiling, I hate finish taping! Thanks for the refresher, repairing a patio ceiling in the 112 degree heat. At least the mud drys quick
Tried finding the sand locally with no luck. Then tried filtering sand through a screen with horrible results. Finally oredered some 20/30 grit glass beads. I’m skip troweling my main living area ceilings now. Just finished skipping a small hallway with nice results. I’m a DIYer. I’m finding the most difficult part to be getting the stroke completed without globbing it up in the start of the stroke. I’m trying with what seems to me to be a very small amount of mud, but it is looking better. Thanks for posting your videos. Very helpful.
Im a finisher myself but my thing is I've worked on new homes and for people that want flat walls if people wanted flat walls people referred me to the there customers I've never done to much texturing but your videos have help me a lot
That’s awesome Ted! I love Kirk’s channel! He is a true craftsman for sure!👍🏻 I really appreciate you watching and commenting my friend. Thank you! -Paul
OMG! This DIYer has been scraping popcorn😩! I would much rather this! Scraping is the BIGGEST mess. I will be doing this for the rest of my house! Thanks for the video.
So I went to skip trowel the wall I built. Took a minute to get the hang of it. Once I got to the back side of the wall. I was pretty good at it. Wish the wall was bigger so could have kept going. Thanks again! Couldn't have done it with out your video.
I'm a DIYer. My family in Colorado with this kind of ceiling texture. No one could tell me how they did that. I'm learning to skim coat walls ceiling in an early 20th century house I bought. It is an art for sure
I'm a single mom DIYer & I greatly appreciate your videos on skip trowel. I scraped off the popcorn ceiling in my daughter's room & plan to skip trowel it. #drywaltube
I'm looking for skip trowel with plaster. I definitely like this look and definitely will be doing this with my drywall mudd finished ceilings. I flip homes and right now doing my own work.
Yeah those are tricky when they are that high up...😅 Checkout this video where i match a skip trowel texture on 3’x3’ ceiling repair: ruclips.net/video/5jtgSkfzYH8/видео.html Good luck with you project bro. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! -Paul
Yes.I am going to skip trowel 4 rooms that are now popcorn. I was going to remove the popcorn first but it looks like you have a video about skim coating over popcorn. I'll check it out.
Contractor, 27 years of this stuff. The sand acts as a gauge for the depth and consistency of the texture, can be done without, but easier for newbies with the silica sand, One thing I always do after texture is dry, use a good latex caulking at the corners from wall to ceiling, that will make painting cut in 100 times easier, if not your brush will grab the texture and hop resulting in non straight lines. Also, weather and humidity plays a huge roll in dry time. Help it with a carpet drying fan pointed at the wet compound area, not too much because it can cause cracking if dries too fast. Air movement will speed the dry time from skim through paint. You can also add 20, 45, or 90 minute sack muds to the bucket of skim to help speed dry time, not so much in the texture as you'll set too quick. Practice makes perfect of course and experience trumps all. Good luck tubers......
So glad that this video helped you @J C!💥👊🏻 I just uploaded this skip trowel video: ruclips.net/video/Mc_n9_Rero8/видео.html I show everything thing you need to know!👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend! 😎 -Paul
Handyman here, so the sand is what creates the skip eh? Will check out paint roller video as well. Trying to match existing ceiling texture in my home where water damage needs cosmetic repair after roof leak was addressed. Would be helpful to learn how to distinguish between and match existing textures as I am not trying to redo an entire ceiling just repair a few areas. Thanks!
Hey there Lex! I appreciate it man!👍 Did you guy's have much drywall damage from the Hurricane Michael? Thanks for watching and stopping by bro!😎 -Paul
I plan to try it. Been bout to all my daze. This likely be my last build and I need to do this and learn it and enjoy it. May do the entire house with ST. ? Thanks for the vid and I have to find your skim coating.
Thanks for the info, I do home repair for landlords, i wish i knew how to skim coat the right way years ago. Mudding a large area of the wall first then even it out. Would have saved me a lot of time. I think I'll try the skip trowel on a family room.
Great Video. I am a DIYer, not by choice. The contractor we had working on our house stood us up to finish the ceiling so now I am trying to figure out how to do it. Thankful for videos like yours! #drywalltube
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. What is the purpose of the sand and what kind of sand should be used? Will be trying the skip trowel in my bathroom remodel. Thanks
What is allowing for the skip trowel texture here? Is it a light hand? The sand in the compound? The unsanded surface below? Why isn't it going on in a smooth layer like when you were doing the skim coating even though the tools seem to be the same?
(Dyi, #? ) Uh oh, I skim coated over popcorn, 2 coats but it hadn't been painted first. It's pretty smooth except for some rough spots. So doing this skip trowell method will cover the rough spots, then paint (roll) with killz 2?
Hi Beth, the skip trowel hides a lot!👍🏻 But, depending on on how rough those spots are? You could just lightly spot skim those areas and then apply your skip trowel texture. I hope this helps. Let me know if you run into any questions along the way. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!😎 -Paul
Hi Paul- or any expert out there. Is there a particular mud/pudding for skim trowel texture? I want to do it myself after fix up the leaking ceiling. Thanks
DIY'er #drywalltube ... I am doing some skim coating (over knockdown and popcorn) and sound proofing on my house. Your videos have helped a lot... thanks Paul.
Hi Paul, CI make a SANDBAR TEXTURED pattern? I tried and had to scrape the hoppered Mudd after it was dry. I knocked it all down and the texture looked exactly like a SANDBAR in the ocean. Then I let the wall dry. But when I applied primer, the SANDBAR look was gone! It seems the sandbar pattern was at the same level as the wall, so the primer just covered up the sandbar look. How can I create the sandbar-look again, so that enough mud stays on the wall, so the primer does not just cover up the texture maki g the wall look smooth?
I have a 2' x 2' ceiling area to skim coat due to water leak. Is it the sand that does the skipping? I was going to try it without, but seems like it will not work. Any advice on this small job?
General contractor does most phases of projects. Enjoy watching your technic and skill. Massive shortage on repairing textured walls video would be nice. Thanks. New trend replicating stucco. Watched the ones you have caused me to join channel
Does the sand help it stick to the surface well so you get the skip trowel texture? Or do you just achieve that texture by that really low angle you hold the knife with? Great video as always.
Hey Luke!💥👊🏻 The sand and and angle of the knife make it skip leaving the random texture pattern of skip trowel. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!😎 -Paul
I am finishing two rooms in my basement. I will do my inside corners after the butt joints and taper joints dry. I will follow your advice on the skip trowel ceiling. Do you show skip trowel walls too? Same thing but no sand?? Bob
Even though you personally taught me to do this years ago, I still haven't been brave enough to do it on an entire ceiling. But that moment is fast approaching. I got a new roof so there's really no excuse not to finish the ceiling repairs under the flat roof from Hurricane Irma. It's been sitting there with just the drywall and joint mud for how many years? LOL
My cousin hired me to redo a part on the ceiling I did my best to match the other design by using the skip trowel technique, but it seems the other design had sand in it so I looked up if they do mix sand
DIYer here. Many folks have asked what kind of sand to use, but I couldn't find a response. Can you tell us what type of sand, please? If it's in the video, I'll try to catch it, but I haven't been able to hear it so far. Thanks so much.
Great video. I want to skip trowel my existing ceilings that have knockdown. Do you think I should skimcoat the ceiling or does skip work over knockdown? Also how about over eggshell? thanks.

DIY-er - Looking to match wall texture in my Bay Area, California home, built in 1960s. Thanks
What kind of sand did you use to mix in with the mud?
You are damn efficient with that!
Done quite a bit of skim coating, yet to try my hand at the skip trowel ,but I think I have just the canvas to try it on this summer.
DIY here. I'm going to try this in one room I'll let you know how it goes. thanks for the video.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. What is the purpose of the sand and what kind of sand should be used? Will be trying the skip trowel in my bathroom remodel. Thanks
Damn nice work. I will attempt this myself for the first time.
When you get up close it looks like the surface has knockdown allready on it. Are you not applying the sand mix to a smoothe skimcoated surface?
What is allowing for the skip trowel texture here? Is it a light hand? The sand in the compound? The unsanded surface below? Why isn't it going on in a smooth layer like when you were doing the skim coating even though the tools seem to be the same?

Hi Paul,
CI make a SANDBAR TEXTURED pattern? I tried and had to scrape the hoppered Mudd after it was dry. I knocked it all down and the texture looked exactly like a SANDBAR in the ocean. Then I let the wall dry. But when I applied primer, the SANDBAR look was gone! It seems the sandbar pattern was at the same level as the wall, so the primer just covered up the sandbar look. How can I create the sandbar-look again, so that enough mud stays on the wall, so the primer does not just cover up the texture maki g the wall look smooth?
Just wondering how coarse of sand you use for skip troweling?

I'm someone trying to figure out what I can do to patch a big hole in my Sea spray ceiling panel.
Does it matter what type of sand you use or where did you purchase it
I'm going to be doing patch work on a ceiling that already has a skip trowel coating. This will be my first attempt.
I am finishing two rooms in my basement. I will do my inside corners after the butt joints and taper joints dry. I will follow your advice on the skip trowel ceiling. Do you show skip trowel walls too? Same thing but no sand??

Paul Peck DrywallTube well, wish me luck, I’m going to try to smooth it out today. It’s my first mud job. 😬

Paul, I believe you had a link to the sand you use for skip trowel texture. How do I go about getting some either from you or another source? Thanks.
If you are starting with new drywall do you still need to do the skimcoat? Or just go directly to the skip trowelling? Thanks for the video. I'm a diy'er
Diy-her 😅 scrapped my kids acoustic ceiling (asbestos free) so messy. Is coating over it easy? Planning on doing my room next, I honestly don't know if I'll be sleep knowing those darn kernels are still there... hiding 😉
Where do you buy that sand?
