I'm late to this party, I hate that. I wish everyone this age was as open as this kid. I'm GenX, we didn't have boundaries. We listened to Pop, Rap, R&B, Rock, Blues, Glam, Punk, Rock, Punk Rock, Goth and Disco. It was the most amazing time to be alive, to listen as each year someone came out with something new.. Today? I think I sound like my Mother, "It all sounds the same". Everything is so divided now. It's heartbreaking to be in that Music World and too see that no one is bothering to branch out anymore. Kids today don't know that Prince, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross and even Michael Jackson were "Crossover Artists". Run DMC, Beastie Boys and Ice T are also Crossovers. You can have Aerosmith on a Blues station and Rock Station, same with Prince. The world has gone backward in 20 years and I seriously believe it's due to the lack of Music Education in Schools, too many downloads of one genres that "YOU MUST LIKE BECAUSE YOU ARE __________". Hell, my Generation thought the Race stuff was over after "Walk This Way" premiered on MTV (That was a channel that used to show Music Videos) :'(

One of the things I think is really unappreciated about Metallica is how flat out amazing the actual music is. There's a reason so many classical musicians love Metallica and why it translates so well to classical interpretation. The music is just good. Doing it on guitar and bass with rock sensibility gives it more punch and power, and James' vocals punch you right in the throat, but the music itself is gorgeous.

Although Metallica did some great work in 1996-present day. The 1996 Metallica album called “Load” is where a lot of fans tend to see Metallica as not being Metallica anymore.
Metallica has still been Metallica, but on the 1996 “Load” and 1997 “Reload” albums, Metallica moves away from very fast songs, changed their sound, wrote more melodic (and shorter) songs. I’d classify those two albums as “rock” albums and not “metal” albums. I like a lot of the songs on those albums.
I’m not a metalhead. I’m a fan of good music in general. I like Metallica because they tackle tough issues such as suicide (Fade To Black), the horrors of war (One, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Disposable Heroes), our corrupt justice system (And Justice For All), child abuse (The Unforgiven), opposing the death penalty (Ride The Lightning), Drug addiction (Master Of Puppets), alcoholism (Sad But True), the potentially high cost of fame (Moth Into Flame) and Artificial Intelligence replacing. Jobs that humans used to do (Spit Out The Bone). They take the music and the message each song conveys very seriously, so they caught my interest 26 years ago.
James Hetfield (the singer/rhythm guitar player) started writing more introspective lyrics on 1992’s “The Black Album” and started to reveal more of himself in the lyrics and music.
Exploring Metallica is a journey that will never hurt you and if you enjoy instruments, there’s a lot to like in Metallica’s catalog.
      Brilliant reaction! Subbed!

This was the 1st power ballad from the band. They were given some shit about, as compared to their previous songs released. Nobody was doing stuff like that in the "Thrash Metal" scene at the time.
James wrote this song from a very dark place. The bands equipment was stolen out of the trailer, to include a Marshall amplifier his mom bought for him before she passed away. As dark as this song comes off, it has helped me (as well as other fans) through a lot of shit.
The mix of acoustic guitar and heavy riffs make this an awesome combination.

It is funny too, how at the end they are really going fast, but it still FEELS slow, melancholy and heavy somehow. I just realized that, and I've heard this song a million times.

Their song 'Unforgiven ' gives me feels like this one. It also has that kind of somber beginning then gets heavier. (If you haven't heard it already.)

Love to see songs from the past have a genuine impact on the younger generation like yourself. Kudos to you for being willing to listen to something outside what you're used to. My only suggestion is to really try to listen to the lyrics because many of Metallica's songs have a deeper meaning. This one is about lost hope and suicide.

As someone else mentioned, from here you can listen to pretty much anything from the first four albums. Pick one, you can't go wrong with any of them. Battery. Blackened. Fight fire with Fire. All would be good choices. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is another great one.

One of my favorite concert moments ever was seeing Metallica at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, not a great music venue, BUT when they were playing Ride the Lightning it was storming outside and the dome would go dark inside and you could see the lightning flashing through the roof of the dome!!! Such a great natural effect!! Afterward, leaving and trying to find our car, there was flash flooding and the water was almost up to our knees in some roads! Everyone was running through and playing in the water!! It was so much fun!!
