Ryan Hampson every time i watch someone react to this song, i think that same thing... just wait and when they freak out when the solo hits and the drums, i get excited just like i'm hearing it the first time all over again 🤘🏼🤘🏼
My first reaction as a kid was "WTF did I just watch"!? Then I heart it a second time, and as you said... few minutes I was in awe! never seen or heard anything like that. My fav. of Metallica.
I was waiting for this. This song shaped my view of the human consequences of war. Metallica changed me with this song. Not only by giving me a different perspective on war but on music as well. Long live One.
it's about soldiers in the infantry like me I cracked my head open, he lost his arms, legs, hearing, eyes, mouth & face. he couldn't die so he held his breath but the machine breathes for him so all he knows is endless pain.
I made a Metallica fan out of 1 of my 15 yr old daughter's friends last yr, by showing her the vid. She is @ our house now. They came downstairs as this video started the song & she got all excited & screamed out "Metallica One!" as she ran to me.
On the break down of the song, the drums are played in a way that they resemble the firing of a machine gun. Also this song is based off the story "Johnnie Got His Gun". It is very anti-war. The character lost his sight and hearing. If I remember right they had to cut out his tongue. He also lost his limbs. He was a torso and head and that was it. The Dr thought he couldn't feel pain, but all he ever felt was pain. They figured out he was using Morse code trying to get assisted suicide because the machines were keeping him alive. The nurse tried to help him by smothering him but she was caught. In the end Johnnie was locked away in a room by himself.
You know what I love about this video the most, the fact that at 5:31 Kirk, James, and Jason head bang at the same exact time in the same exact way, I just love that lol
Oh my god watching you watch One was an absolute pleasure you could feel it straight away and you knew something good was coming. That is an absolute Masterpiece and seeing younger people appreciate it is great
I had read this book and watched the movie Johnny got his gun in a class I took in high school and then and justice for all came out like a month later and this song and video just solidified a life long love of Metallica for me, to see you guys have the same appreciation for them brings me great joy, I even noticed you wearing a Metallica shirt in another reaction, still smiling over that
This song's lyrics have a very serious meaning. If I may suggest, please pull up the lyrics as you react to music. It will give you further insight into the true nature of the songs, allowing you to truly emerge yourself to appreciate it.
I’ll never forget watching this video for the first time. It was like I had never heard the song before. The movie meant so much to the band and the visual storytelling is as much a part of the music as the instrumentals. Every time I hear the song I remember the story of this soldier and it gives me chills.
I hear SO much classical music in this! It's staggering how much Metallica mirrors and imbues classical music. I LOVE Metallica from a musical standpoint and for their obvious understanding of music theory
I love you reviewed Metallica. They've been my all-time favorite band since I was an angry adolescent. Listening to them today still releases a pent up anger I hardly know exists. They speak to every cell in my body.
Im a new subscriber and i love him and his reaction but that bugged me for some reason maybe because im a huge fan and grew up as teen with them... lol still love this channel though!
The movie clips were taken from the movie Johnny Got His Gun. MetallicA bought the rights to the movie for this video. As many people below have commented, next up is Creeping Death, live from Moscow, 1991. 1.6 million people in attendance. This was a free concert during the Monsters of Rock tour that year and was shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Many hard core fans, built with bootleg and black market albums. never dreamed they would ever see a Metal Concert in their lifetime. The energy is electric!
I give you a few more of these killer jams before you're head banging alone in your room. You can only hold back for so long! Love these reactions. Everything was separated when this came out. You were either a grit/metal head, punker or hip-hop head back then. This proves that open mindedness is a great thing \m/ 0 \m/
The movie is a late 60's anti war movie called Johnny Got His Gun. It's about a young man going to war. A bomb explodes and he wakes up with no arms, no legs, can't speak, hear or talk. The only way he can communicate is by using morris code. He's begging them to kill him and they refuse. But the nurse goes ad and kills him to put out of his misery.
Jonny went to war, got his arms and legs blown off, lost eye sight, hearing, speech, and just lay there like a vegetable. Bad part is that he's still concious and knows that he's alive with no way of communicating with the world outside his own head. It's pure hell! It's a really awful scenario. He's basically saying to please kill me and put me out of this misery that the hospital has me hooked up to these machines that keep me alive when I can't wake up from this nightmare. Imagine having no arms, legs, vision, hearing or speech and only way of communicating is Morse code, however, you don't know that the other party is thinking cause you can't hear. This is one freaky ass scenario
Do yourself a big favor, if you really want to respect Metallica and truly respect the talent that they possess. A true musician or band can prove how truly good they are without a studio and give a great live performance. Check out Metallica Battery 1989 live in Seattle. And you will see this raw talent at its best
Yep studio before live everytime , especially with metallica , they are awesome live but you can't get the true sense of the song, just the energy and they play how they feel so the song can get lost live
The story of a man who is sent to war, but ends of getting hit with a land mine and is forced to get his arms and legs chopped off to the point where he can only hear. To the point where he is incapable of speech. Such a deep and dark story, and while he struggles in a hospital, his father parades around using him as a carnival attraction. Such a sick and deep story but told in a magnificent way.
So true I love chop suey my favourite piece But what a band everything they do is no word for this band I hope they do hear it can't wait to see their expression lol I'm sure they will be hooked like me Australia 💕 Christina
Yeah, was based on a book by Dalton Trumbo, "Johnny Got His Gun"; Dalton Trumbo was placed on a Hollywood "Blacklist" in the '50's for "subversion" partly due to that book, long story but worth looking up. On another note, the heavy second section of this song is credited w/creating (or at least heavily inspiring...pun intended? haha) the metal sub-genre "Djent" and also Nu-Metal to a degree; that particular style of riff, the tight, 'chugging' guitars following the bass drum rhythms and that heavy cadence it creates. Great channel too btw, audio sounds good, keep it up!
Fun fact my kid sleeps through her school alarm clock, and I played loudly One to get her up! 😂 Now she says mom plays Metallica loud if I don't get up. 🤣🤣
Found your channel and I am enjoying your guy's reaction and relieving the joy of seeing how you guys feel hearing certain songs for the first time, so much nostalgia when I went through that.....I cant see all the request but if you haven't gotten the request, yet I think you guys would enjoy Breaking Benjamin - Diary of Jane....or any of their songs
If you got the stomach, watch "Johnny Got His Gun", it's the movie that inspired that song, parts of that movie were used in this video. It's a movie that makes soldiers cry like little children.
Not bad for a first video, right? Metallica dropped this on MTV in the middle of the crowd of late 1980's pop music and it *exploded*. Got so much play that the royalties for that movie, 'Johnny Got His Gun', were getting so hard to track that they bought full rights to it instead. I'll lay this on you as to how different this was. Ever been rickrolled? 'Never Gonna Give You Up'? That's 1987. One's video is January 1989. They dropped this in the middle of Michael Jackson, Madonna, REM, Paula Abdul, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, Bon Jovi... All for $25,000 and a day in a warehouse.
This is is true story about a war victim. He called One because all his body parts were blown off, except his torso. There's also a book about it, which is where James got the idea for this song. 🔥☠️🔥

I was thinking the same thing!
😂😂😂👍🤟🤟🤟
LOL!
The double bass is fire 🔥
The first time me and my friends watched the music video for ONE 💀 we all sat there in silence for about 10 minutes afterwards. It was that deep....
My first reaction as a kid was "WTF did I just watch"!?
Then I heart it a second time, and as you said... few minutes I was in awe! never seen or heard anything like that. My fav. of Metallica.

The story is based on a book by Dalton Trumbo called "Johnny Got His Gun". they made a movie in 1971.
Metallica actually bought the rights to this film to stop having to pay royalties.
@@rlret2034 No surprise there.
I read that book when I was in high school. Dang thing gave me nightmares.
chucklesburk Metallica: both the hardest hard rock AND the most literary hard rock band ever. No one else in the genre comes even close.
They’d never get away with making this video today. They’d be attacked as anti-war.
Whatever happened to him in the end? When did he finally die and get relief?
My teacher was cool enough to play this song and video in my high school class!! A lot of us woke up that day. Appreciate that teacher
I got this in an English class, we read “Johnny Got His Gun”, and a music history class. I was tenth grade I think.

Before I even watch the reaction, I'm thinking, "Prepare to see another mind blown by 'One"."
Metallica is even better in concert. Everyone needs to experience one of their concerts. This song is so intense live.
That's a Definite have to see them Live to Experience a True gift of Rock-N-Roll at it's Best
I consider this one of the saddest songs ever written.
It absolutely is.

Metallica goes deep for sure. Try 'Creeping Death' live in Moscow 1991. Legendary concert. 1.5 million people at that concert.
Did you the only reason so many people were there is because it was a free Concert
It's not like ac fuckin dc wasnt there... 😂They killed their set.

This is / was the beginning of Metallica! I remember seeing the video at 1am on the head bangers ball on MTV!
I was in the 7th grade when this song hit MTV, and it blew my mind. I never heard Metallica before then. I've been a fan ever since.
The very first rock music that i really paid attention to and it was love até First sight. And still put a smile on my face...
My favourite Metallica song. The drop when you're hitting a max PR for deadlifts - nothing better.

Hes was too busy enjoying the true sound of the instruments to not listen to the words lol that rawness gets you everytime
I'd recommend Genius. They give a backstory on what the song is about, and give the lyrics.
Any of their songs its a must to listen to their lyrics. There is always a story. Fav band ever
