La puissance de cette œuvre excelle dans la grande beauté des sonorités sans fin réalisées dans un trémolo qui pour moi est un souffle de l'univers dense. Le sens de la beauté n'est évidemment pas le classique, mais la beauté peut être laide comme dans la vie elle-même, avec toute sa cruauté pour l'équilibre. La recherche de la vérité est enracinée. Et Berio, comme certains autres musiciens du XXe siècle, a saisi cette contradiction de la beauté dans l'inconnu, réel et cruel, non gratuitement. Un esprit bourgeois décadent règne encore dans notre esprit. Nous aimons toujours être caressés et bercés. C'est l'une des principales raisons pour lesquelles cette musique ne fait pas le grand saut vers une pleine reconnaissance. L'autre raison est l'énorme difficulté d'être exécuté. En musique, nous ne voulons faire aucun effort. Ni dans la musique, ni dans bien d'autres domaines, comme ceux liés à l'émergence du climat et à l'équilibre physique et moral avec la vie de notre Terre. Bravo, Luciano, pour avoir suggéré tant de choses ... avec tes oeuvres.
Definitely one of his better works.
Considering the usual style of Berio, Ekphrasis appears as an hieratic score, rather unusual in his work. This piece is fascinating.
After the introduction, which was added to the original version of the piece which was called Continuo II, the music is built around a slowly repeating cantus firmus in the middle register which is played tremolo giving the impression of teaming activity. Around this cantus firmus are constellations of melody weaving up and down and proceeding towards several climaxes and occasionally the cantus firmus is interrupted by windows of frantic activity for example kaleidascopic brass fanfares. The cantus firmus provides the foundation for the music which spirals around it into musical space like shooting stars or rockets or fireworks. Eventually exhausted, the energy dissipates and the music just stops. In recomposing Continuo II as Ekphrasis, Berio revised the orchestration making it richer and fuller adding an accordion which fizzes chords and note clusters and deleting the vibraphone. You can hear the differences when listening to Barenboim's recording of Continuo II with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

I havr the rather strande ffeeling that he broufht actual , which mens sesitive, well built but not too intellectual feelungs to the music and its exernal expressions, bur that the "inner" remains more conservative"" if may say so. But I nerd to haer more. I just wanted to alser honstrlybut without solid basis to your question?

Sublime.
The score includes soprano, alto and tenor saxophones playing throughout the piece. It therefore amuses me when I read that learned composers and orchestrators advise that the saxophone is out of place in the orchestra ! The score also includes an accordionist who sits amongst the string players adding an edge to their sound and adding a fizz at key points.
"Learned composers and orchestrators" surely don't know about the saxophone used still by Georges Bizet in "L'Arlesienne", then by Ravel, Rachmaninov in his "Symphonic Dances" and by Prokofiev, let alone American composers.

Kinda agree with the general consensus. An interesting piece, easy to groove to, does not employ a traditional idiom but neither is it eclectic or radical - certainly not crash bang.
Was he moving toward spectralism in this piece?

Ecrire sur la musique, c’est comme danser à propos d’architecture. Cette phobie qui s’empare de moi vis-à-vis de tous ces perroquets répétitifs ont failli m’aigrir ! Cette musique de Luciano Berio à mon sens, et tout à fait subjectivement bien sûr, est toxique pour le cerveau. Nous avons besoin d’air frais ;-)
Mr. Cirse, soyez sure que toute la musique de Luciano Berio peut refraichir chaque cerveau de tous qui avaient oreilles purs et sans prejudice a la nouveaute. Chaque nouvelle musique est une langue que doit etre exploree et etudiee avant etre comprenee et acceptee par la publique. Vous encore pouvez recouvrer Berio pour vous-meme - commencez avec Folk Songs
Je vous avoue avoir du mal en général avec l'oeuvre de Berio, mais j'ai par contre apprécié cette pièce, dont l'orchestration est, à mon avis, d'un grand charme.
Comme je suppose, pour vous, l'air pleine des odors des roses pourrait semble toxique, aussi?
I think you are a bit exaggerate about this piece and its toxicity - I don't like it too much (well done well written, but nothing more than that and quite achademic), but I don't find it so dangerous :)
@@speravi1000 Je viens d'écouter "Folk songs" oeuvre sonore de bonne facture, plus léger & inspiré que celui-ci 🙂 Ekphrasis me fait songer que l'on se retrouve dans une chambre froide, sombre et vide. Fenêtres fermées, portes verrouillées. Nos yeux se sont adaptés à la petite lumière qui s'infiltre dans les trous des rideaux. Nous nous tenons au milieu de la pièce et sommes finalement devenu cette «entité» que nous avions entraperçu dans un rêve étrange et pénétrant 😏

@@speravi1000 Ich mag das Stück teils auch, aber Adorno hatte mit seiner Kritik "Vom Altern der Neuen Musik" den Nagel auf den Kopf getroffen. Luciano Berio ist wie alles nach Schönberg und Anton Webern zu technisch. Die zweite Wiener Schule hat sich zumindest noch ein Hauch Romantik bewahrt.
