I honestly find this beautiful. Unlike anything else he composed. Its better than Schoenberg that's for sure!

Well, after reading her biography on Wikipedia, I must say, who am I to argue with such a prestigiously trained composer! Therefore, since I do not like her music on first listen, is there something here for me to learn? As I suggested 7 years ago, I'm off to listen to some of her other works.

Valen's friend Sverre Kristensen drowned during WWII after the ship he was on hit a mine. The news reached him while he was writing the second movement of this work, and it left an impression: The passage starting at 9:08 is supposed to portrait the eerily calm, still sea after the mine blast.

Someone tried to introduce me to Panufnik's music in 1980. I honestly found it a bit unpalatable at the time, and the person trying to educate me was overly intense, but listening to his music now, and this concerto, in particular, is enjoyable.

I hear the influence of Bartok much more than the other composers mentioned below. What a fantastic piece.

This is very different from Symphony #3. But this symphony still holds my interest. Analyzing.....

This Symphony is excellent. Interesting it sounds nothing at all like Shostalovich, But the emotional temperments are the same emotions temperments as in a Shostakovich Symphony. As said a very differnt language than Shosta. I really like this symphony a lot. It's powerful and grows on you. Im very impressed with this. Worth listening to more.

Charming, albeit forgettable.

His score for the movie "The Haunting" 1963 scared the heck out of me at age ten. I had never heard such sounds. Now I like them.

It's tempting to say that this is totally unlike his later work. But there are prefigurative shades of Yggur maybe? I heard the Beethoven quote too. This piece is technically proficient and very well-rendered by Arditti and Co., as always. Thanks for posting and adding to our knowledge of a fantastic composer. Or channel, as he claimed.

I had the honour and pleasure to sing under Maestro Bělohlávek his (final) 2009 production of Martinů´s masterwork Hry o Marii in the National Theatre in Prague as a member of the Prague Philharmonic Choir. We were engaged to support the Theatre´s own choir for this massive and overwhelming production ... When I hear the final scene in this recording from 56:48 I have goosebumps in their purest form, like a musical ascension into heaven ...
