So, what are you thoughts on FMD? Also, realised I missed some patreon supporters from the list at the end of the video. Thank you *also* to Kamen & Dar!
My opinion is, if you are consuming the Standard American Diet (SAD) and you want to improve your health for a very limited time (like a few weeks), then FMD is probably easier than intermittent fasting (IF). But in the long run, intermittent fasting is phenomenally easier than FMD, and I think much more impactful. The binary decision of not eating is a lot easier than portion control. There are relatively easy ways to extend your fasting period, and once you've extended out your fasting period, it doesn't really take any willpower. Your insulin surge is on a circadian-like cycle, and it'll spike about the same time every day. I suspect what happens is you end up training that cycle to be longer. I find IF self-promoting because of how good one feels during their fasting period once you are somewhat fat-adapted (burning fat). And it's not really necessary to be completely water-only fasted. Coffee or tea with cream is OK. Also, IF actually saves you money, requires zero effort after awhile, and saves time in your day. My 2 cents. If an individual is on the insulin/glucose rollercoaster, then you might do better in the short term with FMD. Here's something I came across when I was thinking of doing FMD: www.quantifiedbob.com/fasting-mimicking-diet/
I think FMD sounds good. Being it is like a form of high CR prolonged use might adversely affect bone tissue, so that should be checked. Another thing is that heavy protein restriction can have a few adverse effects in animals if done for long. But I'd assume the level of protein restriction here takes that into account, though not sure. Btw, you have any more details on the refeeding period? Is it just go back to normal eating or anything special about this period?
I just finished Longo's FMD yesterday and it was excellent. It was expensive, but I learned a lot I wouldn't have if I had started with a DIY version. In a month, I'm going to attempt a five-day very low protein, low fat, low sodium 'fast' based on Walter Kempner's rice diet. _Ad libitum_ eating with rice and fruit only and to keep the protein below 20% No ketosis from this, but the reduced protein will induce autophagy.
I do the FMD regularly, several times per year. I really like it and look forward to it every time. I’ve done a DIY version where I weigh everything and put in the numbers into cronometer to get the right macro’s and calories. I’ve also tried the Prolon box a few times which is really nice and easy to use. A bit expensive but a big part of the money goes to funding the research.

@@kristinadurech2266 I was already relatively healthy before trying FMD and it's just another way (besides a healthy diet etc.) to hopefully stay healthy and feel young as long as possible. I am OMAD - intermittent faster and have maintained Ketosis for months at a time. I lost 109 lbs in 10 months at 42yrs old. All the benefits are true. And I'm interested in FMD because of the micronutrient deficiencies that can happen with maintaining such a restrictive diet. The muscle cramps are other wordly :( !! This is a magnesium/potassium deficiency for me it seems. II'd love to do be in the study!
Meat-based keto has been associated with long term health risks, so you may want to consider bringing more (whole) plant based alternatives into your diet. Beans, whole grains: that sort of thing.
Thank you so much for your explanation. Your channel is a big help for people who wants to take charge of their life and health span. I sub and hit the notification bell
I did this fast mimicking diet by Prolon (Valter Longo's firm) a few months ago and it did not convince me at all. Very expensive and the soups are so high carb that they kicked me out of ketosis all the time (and even tasted ugly!). So, I think I didn't have any autophagy at all. Also my body didn't show those great effects of rejuvination and fat loss I experienced with water fasting for two days. Moreover is the downside: You always always think of eating: When can I eat the next small meal? Why so few today? Instead of just leaving food aside and concentrate on other things when water fasting.
@@ConstanzeC Here's a tip, if someone offers to sell you their "magic" soup for 200 bucks they're a scam artist, no matter how degrees he has. His most important degree is his Masters of B.S.
I had great results. It’s not specifically for deep ketosis, it’s for cell regeneration and longevity. Your keto diet had you in ketosis, why did you do this? You’re already in starvation mode. Your reasoning for doing it makes zero sense because it would have more carbs than you usually eat. I mean, do you not understand what ketosis is and you just jump on any new trend for kicks? Weird. I do have to say that animal fats just clog arteries and cause high cholesterol, which is why the prolon program is designed with mostly olive or other natural oils. The blue zones live a long time, and it’s not because they’re hogging down animals and their fat 😂 Doing prolon probably helped clean up your cholesterol for a short time, which is good. Also, the food was great and the macros are very specific for a reason. Read Dottore Longo’s book for detailed information or watch his interview with Rich Roll
@@seitanbeatsyourmeat666 Sorry, the theses that animal fats clog arteries has been disproved for a very long time. This shows me that it makes no sense to communicate with you about this.
What was the control diet and did participants have a healthy BMI/fat percentage? As CR and weight loss (in BMI > 25) would already improve many metabolic markers. In the clinical trial, the FMD group lost weight whereas the control didn't, implying that the FMD group ate fewer overall calories in the time the study took place. I would be interested to see if there is a difference in outcomes in calorie (and protein?) equated FMD vs. "general" CR/control diet in a healthy population with a normal BMI.
Good questions and I'd also be interested. They refer to healthy adult volunteers as 18 to 70 years of age; BMI, 18.5 and up. They compared subjects who followed 3 months of an unrestricted diet to subjects who consumed the FMD for 5 consecutive days per month for 3 months. The control diet subjects were also later crossed over to the FMD program providing extra data. I hope that helps. @@KineticKitten Also, she said it was 1100 calories day 1 and 800 calories day 2-5. I would be interested to hear what kind of a control you are looking for. 200 calorie deficit every day for a month?
On many people fasting has the (temporary) effect of downregulating the hunger response. This means that participants will have generally eaten less than they usually do a few days after the official fast ended. So yes, the weight loss effect is definitely part of the puzzle here. As always: the trick is to keep it off. FMD a few times a year is one feasible strategy for that.
I've tried FMD several times and always feel better. More clear headed and more energy. I am very interested in optimizing the FMD to remove senescent cell, induce positive epigenetic changes, and organ regeneration, and whether some parameters on standard blood tests can be used to infer the magnitude of any of these effects.

Are the health benefits of the FMD only due to the reduction of the macro nutrients or also due to the reduction of the micro nutrients? Would taking the usual supplements (vitamin d and e, zinc, copper, selen) during FMD counteract the effect?
So, what is the latest research on the FMD and regenerating beta cells? I've read that Valter has shown that FMD regenerates beta cells in mice, and in isolated human cells in vitro, but nothing yet on actually humans. Do we have any fresh studies?
Do we know if 5 days is sufficient to elicit maximum benefits, or should it be increased to 7 days to ensure this? Also, can avocados and legumes be consumed on FMD? The list you showed did not mention them. Thank you.
Avocados would probably be OK, but legumes are likely to have too much protein and carbs. Longo is against longer fasts because he says you can get a long-term reduced metabolic rate from too long on a low calorie/no calorie diet.
Standard ketogenic diets allow protein but not carbs. The FMD allows neither (or rather very low amounts of both), since both trigger pro-growth metabolic pathways. Less significantly, standard ketogenic diets may also contain a lot of fat, often animal fat, whereas the FMD allows moderate fat and all of it from plant sources.
I see FMD as a 5 day course of very strict vegan keto. One difference beyond the macro-nutrient content, is that it's very specifically meant to only last those 5 days. Afterwards you're supposed to return to a normal healthy diet (aka a diet consisting of no processed foods & high in plants).

Does the Fasting Mimicking Diet have guidance on non fast days in terms of macro ratio? What are your thoughts on the protein modified fasting diet. This is higher protein, lower carbs whilst cutting overall calories with the aim of strategically pulsing protein in restricted calorie consumption windows (OMAD, 16:8 or 20:4) to optimise their benefits whilst also making the most of autophagy during the fasting period.
I believe he has said that rodent data does not suggest this is healthy for the organism in the long term. Also, no human populations live naturally on this for long periods.
Carbohydrates are converted to glucose so this would reduce the Ketone production as your brain will "Freak Out" when the glucose is removed. This will promote mussel loss and your energy level will fall through the floor, right?
Fasting has benefits. But idk about his version. I used to love it and his chemotherapy results are amazing. There's no doubt imo that fasting is good for humans in general. Longevity? I hope we find the true answers. But I love fasting in general. Older I get the more I fast and longer. I suggest everyone give it a try.
Three times per year would be one fast every 4 months. Is that enough to see benefits? (I thought we were supposed to aim for once every 2-3 months.). Perhaps he’s just looking to cover himself legally… I don’t see how any nutrients would become dangerously low, unless it’s someone who is already malnurished. Moreover most nutrients can be taken as supplements during the fast.
This is interesting, I wonder if some food/meal preparation business will sell a 5 day supply of food that meets this diet. I love new information on rejuvenation and healthspan, but lately I have been researching more into the glymphatic system (related to the process of autophagy and clearing out proteins) and I am surprised that I cannot find that much information on maintaining and supporting the glymphatic system.
Cool, yeah the glymphatic system is really interesting. It's thought that it mainly occurs during sleep but i think part of the problem is that it is hard to study/control in experiments
800 calories a day, keep protein to 10 grams and under. There is some flexibility ... but mainly veg and healthy fats ... all vegan diet. The key is the low protein. If you want to make it super simple, eat 2 avocados a day with green salad, with a little lemon juice and olive oil on top. Repeat for 5 days.
Dr. Boz has a book called What Ever it Takes, where she uses fasting launched out of a keto diet to help arrest her mother's cancer that she had been struggling with for a long time. Seems you body eats up the nasties first.
I like so many things about this video. BUT I want content like this to rise and get more views. A new microphone, or some decent post-editting is needed on the sound. It is too "wet". I can here the tongue and spit way too much. It's very pronounced when pronouncing "s" sounds, It makes it very difficult to listen to, even though the content was great. Do you know a source with several FMD "recipes" (combinations and amounts of food)?
Ps. I love Valter Longo's work!
The easiest way to get there is to buy the prolon FMD kit& then looking at the ingredients.
I use spermidine/wheat germ extract to help with autophagy/fasting mimicking
Very interesting video! Do you think this has an impact on people with auto-immune diseases? Could it be beneficial? :D
What foods do you eat and when?
800 calories a day, keep protein to 10 grams and under. There is some flexibility ... but mainly veg and healthy fats ... all vegan diet. The key is the low protein.
If you want to make it super simple, eat 2 avocados a day with green salad, with a little lemon juice and olive oil on top. Repeat for 5 days.
Interesting content. Due to the strange accent difficult to understand for a non native speaker 😢

What kind of British accent is that? Sounds like southeast England, but definitely not standard pronunciation.
Hope this is taken as constructive, because it is solid content.
i just want to know how to do it,.. this is too much explaination.
How you do it is you just find an FMD provider and order meal kits. The rest of us are here for a science show.
The title matches the video content.
