      Interesting, I see a lot of parallells with "How not to die" by Michael Greger, MD. If you haven't read it, that may be another one to pile on the backlog. Regarding lactose intolerance, I've heard an (absolutely void of evidence) tale about when the Vikings established a settlement in North America. At first the Vikings were at peace with the Native Americans, however when they traded some milk with them, the natives, who unfortunately were lactose intolerant, thought they were being poisoned and retaliated by wiping out the small Viking settlement.

      I'm getting alot of mix information about the diet of Sardinia and Okinawa. Some sources say they do eat a lot of meat like goats in Sardinia or in case of Okinawa pigs. Both eat a lot of fish?? In case of Sardinia also diary products like goat milk and cheese?? Either its true or possibility fake news?? Can anyone confirm.

    Thank you Sheekey for all of your research and your wonderful presentations. I am a 63 year old who strives for this kind of diet. Another thing I noticed is that all of the, "Blue Zone" areas appear to be near sea level. I'm guessing that may also be a factor since research has been recently released on the positive effects of high oxygen chambers in lengthening telomers. Be well and keep up the good work.

    Thanks for the great summary of the book!
    It’s really hard to know how to interpret some of this data. The typical conclusion from a study finding different diets associated with different longevities is that every difference in the inputs matters. But, maybe high consumption of olive oil is the only actual determinant, and the rest is irrelevant. Until someone does an RCT looking at a single factor, we won’t know. Or maybe two factors are synergistic, and you need BOTH low sugar AND olive oil , or maybe … there is some other explanation.
    Pretty sure we’ll still be trying to figure this out 30 years from now.

    How do they guard against observer bias? For instance, I understand the animal protein trials with regard to nutrient sensor stimulation, however IGF-1 is akin to insulin, and the mention of starchy carbs in the Okinawa diet proportions always raises an alarm with me because, as you included in your summary, it's the absolute amount that is important. The University of Sydney 2014 insulin index demonstrates quite clearly that starchy carbs stimulate large amounts of insulin (and by implication, IGF-1).
    Also, this hate of saturated fat has gone on long enough. Our body produces fat as about 3:2 monounsaturated to saturated. This is likely to be the ideal fat consumption, with only 3% EFAs.

    • @ChessMasterNate
      @ChessMasterNate Год назад

      Insulin spikes are not important. It is insulin level 2 hours after eating that is important. If that is elevated, that is an issue. The body is designed to increase insulin immediately after eating. That is just normal functioning. I heard this recently from genuine experts, so I thought I would pass it on.

    • @Starbreaker2012
      @Starbreaker2012 Год назад

      @@ChessMasterNate Just as too little insulin is not healthy, consider type 1 diabetes, neither is too much insulin. How much carbohydrate does the body need? Enough to prevent over-depletion of glycogen.

    • @ChessMasterNate
      @ChessMasterNate Год назад

      @@Starbreaker2012 Technically, the body does not "need" it. Gluconeogenesis and Glycogenesis can be done by the liver and can use fat or whatever is available. Muscle gets its glycogen by transforming glucose the liver releases into the bloodstream. However, I do think there is an optimal range for long life. I think that is roughly 55%-65% of calories. I have not looked that up in a while, and I am not sure where I got that.
      I think there are a lot of harmful byproducts made while metabolizing fats and proteins. Or more than carbs. But we obviously need protein, and at least minimal amounts of omega 3, and 6, and perhaps 9.
      There are a lot of harmful saturated fats. Fats in general are often filled with Advanced Glycation End-products. Butter has the highest AGE level of any food tested other than bacon. Most of the others are pretty bad. Avocado and probably pistachio are best. But sunflower, safflower and corn oils are not terrible in regard to AGEs. Pretty high is olive oil, which has been pushed heavily. It is possible the polyphenols confer more benefit than the AGEs cause harm, but you can also get those from a supplement, or other polyphenols from other substances like green tea, grape seed or dark chocolate. I happen to be allergic to the olive oil polyphenols, so I take green tea extract, and grape seed extract. Hopefully that is sufficient for maximum benefit. I'd take the chocolate too, but there is currently a lot of lead and cadmium in chocolate, and no way to be certain I am getting a clean source.

    Wonder if the low-protein high-carb suggestion has been tried before? We did that for years; it was called the Macrobiotic Diet. I do not recommend. The MD was 60 percent whole grains, 30 percent veggies, a bit of beans and, rarely, a bit of fish. It certainly makes one skinny. Many MD gurus came to a sticky end.

    This is all well and good, and consistent with the recommendations of the main nutrition experts for probably the last 3 decades at least, but in pragmatic terms, it's very difficult for Americans to find even 30 minutes out of their day to organize such complex diets. Veggies, legumes, fish, unsaturated fats, whole grains --- sure. But who has time in the mad rush of the world to focus on that at every meal? No one that I know. Further, I don't enjoy cooking at all (and am terrible at it), nor do I enjoy going the to grocery store, and I don't think I'm alone in that account. Vegetables spoil after a short period, making your need to spend more time planning and optimizing meals or making yet another trip to the grocery store which you don't have time for a necessity.
    I've tried using companies which pack ready-made meals for active and busy lifestyles in the past (Freshly, Soylent, etc). These are supposed to optimize for healthy diets such as the one described in this book (basically the Mediterranean diet), but in my experience they're still off the mark from it. The trouble is that vegetables spoil, and it's difficult to ship meals with mostly vegetables in them, perhaps. Or maybe I've just missed the best companies who can do this, I don't know. But it seems like, given the fact that almost every nutritionist (regardless of what they are preaching) seems to have a very specific set of foods which we need to eat and avoid, they would be wanting to make it as easy as possible for us to actually follow their recommendations.
    We don't live on an island in huts with nothing better to do than harvest food and plan meals. We're Americans -- we work 70 hour weeks, have friends and family, and try new things in our spare time. Please, nutritionists, make this easy on us.

    • @ashw6015
      @ashw6015 3 года назад +7

      Maybe the next thing you should try in your spare time is taking some accountability. It seems like you misunderstand the job of nutritionists and scientists. They do not exist to feed you fairy tales. They are there to deliver the truth. If you're unwilling to accept that, that's on you and it's nobody else's responsibility to make you listen.

      I'm probably going to wind up on something like Soylent or elemental diet soon due to inflammation in my esophagus. My daughter was almost living off Ensure for a while there (Soylent isn't certified GF yet so that would not work for her). She also spent several weeks on a feeding tube in the hospital on Osmolyte. Unfortunately they would try to get her to eat stuff it later turned out she is allergic to (I kept telling them... I took her to see a mast cell specialist on my own after she was released to get properly diagnosed) and she would throw up her feeding tube and they would have to re-insert ans then x-ray her to confirm the position. Lots of radiation.

      stay off fast food. limit heavily processed food, especially processed carbohydrates. look for compromises with yourself as far as the health and convenience. as far as vegetables are concerned, i understand where you're coming from. that's why i have a blender that i use for blueberry/parsley or spinach or broccoli smoothies. i also buy premade organic celery and low sugar green vegetable juice. that can be expensive if it's not on sale. but i agree with the others on your thread. these scientists owe us nothing and anything learned is pure beneficial. and i almost forgot, probiotic foods. I've been getting kefir and it's not good but i drink it. I've also started eating 2 tablespoons of sauerkraut which i do not like. i make believe they're crunchy noodles.

    I think the main reason high protein diets have worse outcomes is the generation of lots of Advanced Glycation End-products during cooking meats. Cooked in ways that don't generate lots of AGEs (boiled or steamed), I suspect they are fine. Though, I do think periodic fasting or fasting mimicking (not talking about skipping dinner, but rather several days in a row of very low or no protein intake and very low or no calories at the same time) has major benefits.
    All centenarian populations have low rates of cancer. Or at least cancer that kills them. It does not matter where they live. In the US, only about 4% of centenarians eventually die of cancer. Something like 32% of the Americans that die at 60 or 70 die of cancer.
    I did the fasting mimicking diet several times. I came to the conclusion that there were diminishing returns, which I took to mean, that I really don't need to do it as often as suggested. After doing it, say 3 times, I think it makes sense to do it no more than every 9 months. The first time though was amazing. Such a huge difference. Too frequent, and I was very slow healing, presumably because too many senescent cells involved in healing were harvested to provide protein for the rest.

    well building quality and natural muscle is also beneficial for longevity and for that you need protein. I lost around 135 pounds, built (some) muscle and reversed my fatty liver by using fasting (up to 4 days) and doing excercise and eating moderate protein. By this i tried to incoporate elemetns from both Valter Longos studies and the scientific consensus about building muscle/excercise
    While i see the advantages of a pescetarian diet, things like fermented dairy, grass fed red meat or free range eggs are also healthy in their regards consumed in moderate amounts and mice studies should be taken with a grain of salt.

With such a low protein diet you will end up very skinny and weak and what's interesting is as you get to high age having low muscle mass is correlated with higher mortality (like hip fractures).

      Recommendations are 0.8g per Kg not per pound. Valter’s upper limit is 0.79g per kg so more or less the same. If you are fasting or implementing a ketogenic diet then the beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) produced is glucose sparing and therefore muscle protective because the brain can use BHB for fuel instead of glucose from gluconeogenesis from muscle protein.

      @@GodfreyMann Well I am not sure from were get this data but this is pretty mainstream knowledge and pretty much wildly accepted recommendation anywhere you look. There is various research that maybe suggested little less but I am ensuring you it's ~ 0.8-1.2g per pound not Kg. (we are talking here about training individual who trains couple of time a week)

    Hmm protien intake depends on factors its being used for. if you are a body builder that IGF 1 is going to be used in the right places like for muscle growth and maintenance. Unfortunately protien is just too important and we bodybuilders need enough of it otherwise i notice muscle loss. IGF 1 does not cause cancer. Protien is important and we often don't get enough and yet cancer rates are still high. Keto is a good start for longevity as sugar is the primary cause for disease

    The stuffy sounding, nasally and thick accent of the narrator is quite a barrier to hearing the important information well. Quite a challenge to listen to that voice. Good summary, but speaker should work on a clean delivery or should use a narrator with a clear, crisp, well enunciating voice.

    Why do longevity researchers not produce anything useful?
    They are like the doctors taking credit for longevity when in reality it was access to food, refrigeration, and essential nutrients, or removal of extreme toxins.
    What a bunch of crock: low protein results in muscle wasting, and muscle mass has the highest correlation with mortality, ie longevity. Never mind muscle mass is essential to buffer glucose preventing diabetes etc. No better than gut biome researchers, have no clue.

      Low protein as in not overdoing it, you've been indoctrinated into thinking you need 1+ grams of protein per pound of body weight or something ridiculous as that or to overly emphasize it. The real numbers to follow in general is more like .8-1 grams per kilogram of lean mass and when your calculate the numbers you need it's probably quite a bit less than you previously thought you needed. Another thing is just eating protein and no matter how much of it you eat is going to have little effect on your muscle mass, what matters more by far in preserving your muscles is how you stimulate them.

    I find it incredibly racist and bigoted of Longo to imply that we should focus on eating "like our ancestors" or foods from "our homelands". There is just one race, the human race and the melanin content of your skin does not have any influence on your dietary choices. Can we find out more about this so called doctor's background? Italy does have a problem with latent right-wing extremism so I'd be careful with praising this guy.

    Trial studies are the factual science vs error laden epidemiology studies (subjects diet lifestyle memory) which are based on usually only the subjects memory or worse, their honesty
    The studies she’s talking about are using bs oils like corn oil as “fats” which is an inflammatory oil. She’s citing flawed studies.
    I’d unsubscribe from here she’s not even aware of my two problems with her “research”. She just likes to impress people with jargon, move on!

      Without the explanation as to how a diet works then it’s not possible to decide which one is best. Furthermore, if you don’t understand the details then there’s a high chance of you implementing it incorrectly and not getting the results you were after. If that happens you might end up blaming a perfectly good diet instead of yourself...but then ignorance is bliss.
