The fact that some people are treating this scene as beautiful and full of love and understanding is a strong statement to just how effective the emotional manipulation of the cult in midsommar is. They inflicted that pain on Dani and then taking advantage of her devastated and vulnerable state by acting like they are helping her cope with it in order for her to trust them. It’s honestly very disturbing.
This is exactly how cults work: they find someone vulnerable and act empathetic towards them until their mind breaks. It's so terrible that Dani just needed someone and came to them. 10/10 for Florence depicting an anxiety attack.
Torture works similarly. Put someone in a vulnerable/painful state and subject them to terrible stress with the torturer, then in comes the 'good cop' who stops the torturer, maybe gives you some water, makes you a bit more comfortable...and now that they've done these nice things for you, answer some questions. By stressing the subject and then then 'coming to their rescue', over and over again, it breaks down that reality that everyone involved is doing this to you, the 'good cop', the 'bad cop', all the same thing, manipulating your vulnerability. "I stopped him from hitting you, you don't need that, right? Here, have some water. Want a smoke? See, this doesn't have to be so bad, I'm reasonable, I'm your friend, I just want some info, not to hurt you. Just answer my questions and we can be friends and this will be over, ok? Oh, you don't want to answer questions? Him him some more...".
People keep saying they are sharing her pain ..but they inflicted that pain in the first place ..they drugged Christian and manipulated him to have sex with the red head then they pretend to cry with Dani ..I always get angry at this scene I can't believe some people are saying this is beautiful ..it's classic manipulation.

Omg some of these comments are scary. It just goes to show how even a movie manipulated an audience, not just Dani. This is a cult. Theyre the ones causing her pain in the first place. They are not actually empathizing with her. People talking about "community" they specifically took advantage of Dani BECAUSE they knew she had no one else. It's sick. A cult deprogrammer broke down this scene for me: Essentially what they're doing is officially transitioning her into becoming one of them. On the surface it looks like they're just sharing a moment of vulnerability with her. But if you look, you can see how manipulative it actually is: First, they essentially engulf her, so she can't see anything but them. When she starts to cry, they mimic her, as a means of showing they're with her in the moment. But the longer the crying goes on, they stop copying her, and start to cry in a rhythm, until finally, it instead of them copying her, she's copying them, by crying in the same rhythm. See how easy that was?

It's probably not really mockery since it's clear from the film that the Harga (like other cults) don't have much use for the idea of individuality or personal boundaries but instead sincerely believe themselves to be deeply connected to each other meaning that the pain of one is somehow the pain of all -- but yes, it is very manipulative.
I'm disturbed by all of you interpreting this as therapeutic. I see it as quite the opposite - torture. No one really wants to have their terror, disgust, and loneliness forced back inside of them by a mirror. Dani is in prison in this scene. A prison of her own emotion with the cell door held shut by other prisoners who believe that they are free. Tragic, disturbing, devastating.
This somewhat describes what I feel. Although I believe the scene does kinda stand for the cult resonating with her cries, it's also reminiscent of a panic attack I had, and her yells turning back to her makes everything feel even more hopeless, it sucks

The absolutely genuine and distressing acting by her is one of the most disturbing yet sad things ive ever seen in a movie, both her and Ari Aster deserve all the respect in the whole film industry for this movie.

Florence Pugh became one of my favorite actresses after this scene alone. I'm convinced she actually does have anxiety or some kind of panic disorder because she portrayed it way too real (not to undercut her talent or anything, I was just blown away how incredibly well she captured the feeling of a panic attack). I think everyone who laughed at this scene has never had a major panic attack because, if they did, they'd be terrified at how accurate this scene is. 10/10, Florence Pugh should be recognized for this role but, sadly, she'll most likely go the way of Toni Collette in Hereditary and get very little recognition for an amazing performance. Regardless though, she did an amazing job.

2:37 the way dani gasps before liberating that scream. you can feel her pain, her despair and loneliness. beautiful portrayal by florence pugh. she did an amazing job.
The fact that everyone is supporting the girls helping her let out her grief truly shows how well done this movie is, the director perfectly fit the audience in with cult manipulation and showed how susceptible we are to it. It’s genius. Don’t forget, the people comforting Dani are the ones that did this to her in the first place.

@The Duke Of Flem Ari Astor himself has mentioned that the cult did nothing to Christian that he didn’t at least partially consent to (at least up until this scene). They did drug and r*pe him (I censor the word for my own comfort as a survivor) but the directorial intent was to show that the Harga “seduced” or lured him into the act instead of forcing him. I think that’s why Dani’s reaction is so brutal; on some level she knows that Christian wasn’t tricked, but that he actually wanted to betray her all along. Again this is me speaking as a survivor of abuse, s*ual assault and trauma, so the perspective might seem unusual, but that’s where I think the beauty of this film truly shines through. Everyone looks at it and sees something different. That’s just good filmmaking, isn’t it?
That's because in that moment, Dani *is* very much a "distressed animal" -- she's in so much agony that all logic and reasoning and thought has fled. Although she isn't consciously aware of it, the Harga deliberately set her up to discover Christian having sex with another woman in order to drive a final wedge between them (why else would Dani's escort choose to stop right there at that time?). Dani realized on some level that Christian was already checking out of the relationship and just going through the motions, but she had not been able to let go since he was one of the only sources of security she had left after her sister unexpectedly killed herself and their parents. Witnessing Chistian's apparent betrayal severed the last tie which Dani had to her previous life -- and then the Harga women offered her their comfort so that she would turn to them.
I don’t think people understand how truely disturbing this scene is. Imagine showing true emotion and overwhelming disbelief and sadness only to be mocked directly in your face. They are sympathising with her, they aren’t helping her, they are using her and mentally abusing her.
I know everyone in the comments are talking like "oh that's so cathartic" "wow the empathy these women are showing to Dani, brought a tear to my eye" and like, yeah that's all true but I honestly feel really disturbed watching this because is any of that empathy and tears real? They're a cult and they're trying to indoctrinate this woman, who's isolated and alone and vulnerable, into their community. It's insidious in their kindness and their empathy.

I had a couple behind me they were in their late 30s/40s and wouldn't stop talking/laughing like they were in their own house. The woman said twice "this is one of the shittiest movies I've ever watched on theaters". Then my friend (respectfully) told them to stop talking. Seriously it was super annoying and it was immature of them. Fortunately they were quiet for the rest of the movie.
I love the intensity of this scene. It makes me want to cry for her, because I’m aware that they are just manipulating her, but at this point, she has been met with no empathy from the last person she’s close to, so it also relieves me in a way. It truly does seem like it would be therapeutic, regardless of their intentions. I think this should be common practice for victims of trauma or other overwhelming issues. Of course I’m not saying to join a cult to experience this, but considering the amount of people that seem for it in this comment section, I would think it wouldn’t be too hard to find some non-cult-affiliated people to try this with.
I like how at first they all try to ssh her and calm her down but as they realize that she needs to cry they shift so that instead of trying to silence her they cry with her so that she dosnt feel ashamed or alone in her feelings
Also I just realized that the second shift that happens while they all cry together makes it so that they all sob in unison and the way that they cry requires deep, breaths that are let out slowly so not only are they validating her in her feelings but they’re also keeping her from hyperventilating
It looks more like they’re mocking her rather than comforting her. Ever seen that scene in silence of the lambs where the killer mocks the woman’s cries and screams? This scene reminds me a bit of that.
Although I understand what you're saying and why you would see it this way, I think you missed the point of the scene from "Silence Of The Lambs." Buffalo Bill is actually not mocking his victim when he imitates her screams because he's actually not a torture killer in the strict sense of the term. He kills his victims quickly and only mutilates their bodies after death instead of killing them slowly and painfully as a torture killer does. He keeps his victims imprisoned for several weeks before killing them and starves them in order to loosen their skin -- most likely to make it easier for him to flay them. I think you need to review the scene on question since you're missing an important detail. What is Buffalo Bill doing while he's screaming? Both of his hands are clutching the front of his shirt and he's pulling it away from his chest to make it seem as if he has breasts underneath. He's not imitating her in order to mock her -- he's imitating her because he wants to *be* her (Buffalo Bill wants to be a woman but was rejected for surgical reassignment and is trying to make himself a "woman suit" out of tanned human skin). He's allowing himself to pretend for a moment that he is a woman and tries to cry and scream like her.
This scene made me cry for how they all wanted to share her pain. When I went to rehab I had fellow women who would comfort me and told me to cry. They are just trying to make her feel less alone with her feelings and that's just beautiful.
I saw it as a seen of empathy too, if you put a scene in context of the whole film everytime we see dani crying she isolates herself and cries alone. In this scene she finally has a supportive family to share her pain
I started crying when watching this scene. As someone who has been cheated upon, Dani having an anxiety attached really touched me. I felt the exact same thing, the shortness of breath, the rapid heartbeat, you feel so much pain.
Tbh I wanted to cry with her. Like the support of not being alone in this pain is so powerful. It's feels like such a release to let out anger, fustration and pain. oh my gosh, literally everytime I watch this I get chills because of the realness of her cry; the strong breaths and the uncontrollable shouts of anger while you're in such utter pain.
I feel like this scene allowed Dani to consider just joining in and staying as the queen. Who wouldn't want to join a very emotion-driven, empathic collective family unit, after having gone through so much?
I love how the women in this scene trying to shusses her and make her breathing rhythm more calm at first, and then dani start to scream and they just follow her emotion, make her not feeling alone in this.
Some observations about this scene: 1. Dani takes off her headpiece as if she is ready to relinquish her title as may queen is what she sees displeases her. 2. The other woman feebly stops Dani from investigating, almost like a subtle “enter at your own risk”. Perhaps for Dani to see the draconian measures in the cult isn’t necessarily a negative thing, as it would more readily prepare her for what is to come. 3. After the other girls take Dani away, she becomes progressively more hysterical as they begin to replicate her rhythm of wailing. Unison and synchronisation symbolises their ability to empathise and understand her emotion.
This scene reminded me of Handmaid's tale when the wives go through the motions of labor/birth as if they're trying to experience what the handmaid's are feeling.
I like that we don't have a POV shot through the keyhole. We see her emotion and that's all we need to see, especially with all we've seen at this point already.
As someone who's been cheated on before, the fear of abandonment, the fear of putting too much of your heart into someone you wholly love never goes away. From my experience, I can never love someone openly, completely and whole heartedly even again. It's painful and almost every other night, I hurt from that experience. The pain Dani feels is so raw and so accurate that I actually cried with her during this scene.
Douglas Batista and this is up there with those performances if not better acting wise and not even a spirit nomination. Florence hasn’t got a single recognition for this and basically dragged Saoirse to awards. How Renee is sweeping is beyond me.
beacuse you need a promotional campaign for to win the Oscar. That's why Meryl Streep won over Rooney Mara at 2011. Florence should have something similiar for to be nominated. It doesn't matter how good is her job here.
Like what kind of a sick mind comes up with a scene like this? I know it might have been inspired by the child birth scene in Handmaid's Tale, but this is something else. You can argue if this film is a masterpiece or a disaster (for me it's a masterpiece), but you can't argue how sick and unique this scene is. I was dumbfounded for nearly 5 minutes. The few people who began laughing at this scene in the theatre (and the sex scene) just shut their mouths as they realised what this scene meant and how incredible the acting is. 200 people watched in dead silence. Fucking genius. Scenes likes this reminds me how powerful art of film is. RESPECT.
You don't really need imagination to come up with the sick idea of people copying your cries and painful wails as support and sharing pain. It's all real. This is what cults do. These women are master manipulators. This is how Dani was fully convinced to join their little cult. Cults prey on vulnerable, lonely people to manipulate them into joining.
In many cultures, women crying in a group is a sign of extreme mourning. Especially young, unmarried girls. They're related with fertility, happiness and growth. In a more traditional society, women crying is the first sign of the start of a turmoil which is beyond the control of men. It's all programmed inside us. Which is why this scene is so disturbing.
Expressing empathy can always be a tool of manipulation. What I love about this scene is how we can see the beauty, from Dani’s perspective, of experiencing genuine empathy. And we can also see the horror of people who use such empathy for indoctrination. Lovebombing, empathy. Both can be true, even at the same time.

Honestly I think this scene is really important; it’s the one where it finally becomes 100% apparent how important it is to have community and support.
I really like this scene as well as the community shows it's success and failure of being a community. With Harmony the community is obviously a strong comfort of support and it presents the community as empathic/ as part of the girl. However, it later switches to the community mimicking Christian's sex literally after this scene and it just shows how the community feels disconnected from reality. His invasion of privacy makes the audience feel a sense of discomfort, distrust and lack of empathy with the community. I am literally in love with the director.
Well, this scene also alludes that Dani literally have No One left out there, in here she's one among the other, out there she is no one, alone and abandoned.
If you read the directors cut, he was tempted and he was going through lust from the time skin the fool dance when Maja kicked him from the side and was gazing at her when she would look or not look. He was already going through the spell. Not only that in the directors cut he was told, to make a decision to mate with Maja, but he wanted to think about it. When ulka gave him the drink he was going to turn it down, but looked at Maja and knew if he drank it he was going to be dazed and drugged ( almost like a way of numbing and not feeling bad for cheating on Dani). I literally thought the same... but he knew that the drink was going to get fucked up and he went with it. I watched this movie so many times and to make you open your eyes even more... he looked at Maja a lot, they were both eye fucking throughout the whole movie. When he finished climaxing he felt guilt and knew what he did was wrong. When they ended up numbing him and not being able to talk or walk... he was screaming inside and begging Dani to forgive him. Of course it was too late.
I love the two point of views in the comments. - The literal and practical view (it’s a cult. This is manipulation) -The symbolic and artistic view (The importance of community and empathy) Which both are valid interpretations. Yes, cult and organization (like gangs) will use emotional manipulation disguised as empathy and belonging to indoctrinate. Yes, having a support system that’s willing to empathize with you and care for you is important. Personally, I go with the symbolic route since the director said this is a break up movie.
I think both views are important and hit even harder when viewed as one. Yes, support and community are extremely necessary to human beings. And when someone has gone through the worst and are at their most vulnerable, support and community can be used as a tool to indoctrinate them into whatever you want. Dani is at her worst here: she has no family, her friends are gone, and her boyfriend has hurt her. She has nothing, but she doesn't turn to this cult because she feels alone. She turns to them because she feels loved and understood by them. She feels safe with the Hargas because their manipulation wasn't through fear or force. It was through love and empathy. They truly think they're helping Dani. Which makes it all so much worse
It’s uncanny but somehow very comforting how much this scene captured what it’s like to have a panic attack or an anxiety attack. The need to keep your body moving because you feel like you’re bursting, the uncontrollable sobs, and desperately wanting to feel tethered down to something. She’s a great actress.
To feel so alone, so disconnected, unseen, and then to be suddenly a part, sharing, and accepted. It's like going from learning to live with nothing, to having everything you have ever really needed.

For those who say this is empathy, it is not, it is manipulation. Dani is vulnerable, a person in a bad mental state can be easily manipulated, that’s what these women are doing they want to make her think she is accepted and loved within the cult so they can manipulate her. A traumatized person will sometimes completely trust someone who shows an ounce of affection, leading to the person being able to take control of them and make decisions for them. They are not Sharing her pain they are pretending to because her boyfriend never helped her express her pain so they see that as an opportunity to pretend to share her pain and mess with her head.
I don't know if I'm being harsh but I feel like the people who are saying "they treated her better" or "this is so wholesome" or "this is so symbolic" are missing the point of the scene entirely. what an amazing scene, how cathartic it must have been to have people to really feel with her. And it's amazing how perfectly this mirrors Dani's awful panic attack the night after her family dies. Thats probably why she didnt want to lay down in a bed, it probably gave her flashbacks. But for once those girls are actually feeling and screaming with her and it's what she always needed from the start, rather than just repressing her emotions and trying to not feel them anymore. This scene resonated with me a lot and drove home the point that this movie was about grief. I had wasted 4 years of my life on a girl that treated me like shit and cheated on me and when I found out I was devastated like this but my friends where there and yes I was drunk and super emotional but they weren’t and saw me on the ground broken, they proceeded to lock arms with me and mimic my pain just like this scene and it made me realize that these friends I neglected for 4 years cause of a girl were real family and shared my grief. When I saw this at home one night I texted them and let them know how much I appreciate them. Later on I found out the director had suffered from a bad breakup too, I never have seen such a surreal scene that seemed tailored for me but wow. Funny how ppl can only laugh at this I guess they haven’t found true friends either. (Yes I get the ppl in the movie are batshit crazy and a horror trope but I saw a deeper meaning that wasn’t just a coincidence).
Jokes aside, after loosing her entire family in such a traumatic heart wrenching way, of course she would have an utter mental breakdown. Christian was all she had left and she loved him. Seeing him having sex with another woman broke her.
There is always been a wrong portrayal of women being carefree apathetic after break up..but not true .women goes through equal devastating trauma..I cried like insane..and my two frens comforted me ...

The scene before this is obvusouly really awkward and uncomfortable (even just hearing the sounds is making me feel super weird) but I laughed it off bc it was so crazy it was funny. But when dani went up to the door to look, I cant even explain it. My stomach sank, it was the most anxious I felt the whole movie. Just knowing what she was going to see and how it would make her feel.

I haven’t seen many people say this but here’s my interpretation. Personally, I didn’t feel any empathy being portrayed here. Instead this scene felt like the pinnacle of the nightmare Dani is trapped inside. She is realizing everything that is happening around her which is just too surreal to comprehend and only enhanced by the women screaming along with her. A truly nightmarish scenario becoming reality for Dani. I might be completely wrong though, this is just what I felt while watching
No, I agree. I felt like she was trying to crawl away from them and be alone with her thoughts, and they wouldn't let her go and that's when the agonized screaming starts. That's not about Christian. To me it seemed like there were a bunch of vultures surrounding her and she was literally in hell.
I’ve realized that the people in the camp mimic people in a vulnerable state or in pain. When the old man was screaming, they were screaming, when the ginger girl started moaning, they started moaning, when Dani started crying, they were crying, when the two people in the triangle started to burn and scream, they started to scream.

Holy hell some comments here scared me, more than the movie itself, like yeah it's beautiful to have someone to comfort you but this is a clear case of manipulation they found her in a weak state of mind having a full panic attack and they attack her yes I say attack her when she was more vulnerable. To make her feel like she was being comforted by them but in reality, they were manipulating her.
This scene means so much to me. I was in a similar situation to Dani when I watched this movie for the first time. When my abusive ex told me he started dating his best friend less than a month after we broke up knowing that she liked him all year, this is exactly how it felt .

The fact that some people are treating this scene as beautiful and full of love and understanding is a strong statement to just how effective the emotional manipulation of the cult in midsommar is. They inflicted that pain on Dani and then taking advantage of her devastated and vulnerable state by acting like they are helping her cope with it in order for her to trust them. It’s honestly very disturbing.

Put someone in a vulnerable/painful state and subject them to terrible stress with the torturer, then in comes the 'good cop' who stops the torturer, maybe gives you some water, makes you a bit more comfortable...and now that they've done these nice things for you, answer some questions. By stressing the subject and then then 'coming to their rescue', over and over again, it breaks down that reality that everyone involved is doing this to you, the 'good cop', the 'bad cop', all the same thing, manipulating your vulnerability. "I stopped him from hitting you, you don't need that, right? Here, have some water. Want a smoke? See, this doesn't have to be so bad, I'm reasonable, I'm your friend, I just want some info, not to hurt you. Just answer my questions and we can be friends and this will be over, ok? Oh, you don't want to answer questions? Him him some more...".

It's probably not really mockery since it's clear from the film that the Harga (like other cults) don't have much use for the idea of individuality or personal boundaries but instead sincerely believe themselves to be deeply connected to each other meaning that the pain of one is somehow the pain of all -- but yes, it is very manipulative.
I'm disturbed by all of you interpreting this as therapeutic. I see it as quite the opposite - torture. No one really wants to have their terror, disgust, and loneliness forced back inside of them by a mirror. Dani is in prison in this scene. A prison of her own emotion with the cell door held shut by other prisoners who believe that they are free. Tragic, disturbing, devastating.
This somewhat describes what I feel. Although I believe the scene does kinda stand for the cult resonating with her cries, it's also reminiscent of a panic attack I had, and her yells turning back to her makes everything feel even more hopeless, it sucks

Florence Pugh became one of my favorite actresses after this scene alone. I'm convinced she actually does have anxiety or some kind of panic disorder because she portrayed it way too real (not to undercut her talent or anything, I was just blown away how incredibly well she captured the feeling of a panic attack). I think everyone who laughed at this scene has never had a major panic attack because, if they did, they'd be terrified at how accurate this scene is.
10/10, Florence Pugh should be recognized for this role but, sadly, she'll most likely go the way of Toni Collette in Hereditary and get very little recognition for an amazing performance. Regardless though, she did an amazing job.

@The Duke Of Flem Ari Astor himself has mentioned that the cult did nothing to Christian that he didn’t at least partially consent to (at least up until this scene). They did drug and r*pe him (I censor the word for my own comfort as a survivor) but the directorial intent was to show that the Harga “seduced” or lured him into the act instead of forcing him. I think that’s why Dani’s reaction is so brutal; on some level she knows that Christian wasn’t tricked, but that he actually wanted to betray her all along.
Again this is me speaking as a survivor of abuse, s*ual assault and trauma, so the perspective might seem unusual, but that’s where I think the beauty of this film truly shines through. Everyone looks at it and sees something different. That’s just good filmmaking, isn’t it?
That's because in that moment, Dani *is* very much a "distressed animal" -- she's in so much agony that all logic and reasoning and thought has fled. Although she isn't consciously aware of it, the Harga deliberately set her up to discover Christian having sex with another woman in order to drive a final wedge between them (why else would Dani's escort choose to stop right there at that time?). Dani realized on some level that Christian was already checking out of the relationship and just going through the motions, but she had not been able to let go since he was one of the only sources of security she had left after her sister unexpectedly killed herself and their parents. Witnessing Chistian's apparent betrayal severed the last tie which Dani had to her previous life -- and then the Harga women offered her their comfort so that she would turn to them.

I don’t think people understand how truely disturbing this scene is. Imagine showing true emotion and overwhelming disbelief and sadness only to be mocked directly in your face. They are sympathising with her, they aren’t helping her, they are using her and mentally abusing her.

The woman said twice "this is one of the shittiest movies I've ever watched on theaters". Then my friend (respectfully) told them to stop talking. Seriously it was super annoying and it was immature of them. Fortunately they were quiet for the rest of the movie.

I love the intensity of this scene. It makes me want to cry for her, because I’m aware that they are just manipulating her, but at this point, she has been met with no empathy from the last person she’s close to, so it also relieves me in a way. It truly does seem like it would be therapeutic, regardless of their intentions. I think this should be common practice for victims of trauma or other overwhelming issues. Of course I’m not saying to join a cult to experience this, but considering the amount of people that seem for it in this comment section, I would think it wouldn’t be too hard to find some non-cult-affiliated people to try this with.

Although I understand what you're saying and why you would see it this way, I think you missed the point of the scene from "Silence Of The Lambs." Buffalo Bill is actually not mocking his victim when he imitates her screams because he's actually not a torture killer in the strict sense of the term. He kills his victims quickly and only mutilates their bodies after death instead of killing them slowly and painfully as a torture killer does. He keeps his victims imprisoned for several weeks before killing them and starves them in order to loosen their skin -- most likely to make it easier for him to flay them.
I think you need to review the scene on question since you're missing an important detail. What is Buffalo Bill doing while he's screaming? Both of his hands are clutching the front of his shirt and he's pulling it away from his chest to make it seem as if he has breasts underneath. He's not imitating her in order to mock her -- he's imitating her because he wants to *be* her (Buffalo Bill wants to be a woman but was rejected for surgical reassignment and is trying to make himself a "woman suit" out of tanned human skin). He's allowing himself to pretend for a moment that he is a woman and tries to cry and scream like her.
This scene made me cry for how they all wanted to share her pain. When I went to rehab I had fellow women who would comfort me and told me to cry. They are just trying to make her feel less alone with her feelings and that's just beautiful.
That's what I got from it too. I didn't view it as a form of manipulation, I viewed it as a cathartic moment for all the women.

Why is nobody asking what did she see? What is in the room??
Some observations about this scene:
1. Dani takes off her headpiece as if she is ready to relinquish her title as may queen is what she sees displeases her.
2. The other woman feebly stops Dani from investigating, almost like a subtle “enter at your own risk”. Perhaps for Dani to see the draconian measures in the cult isn’t necessarily a negative thing, as it would more readily prepare her for what is to come.
3. After the other girls take Dani away, she becomes progressively more hysterical as they begin to replicate her rhythm of wailing. Unison and synchronisation symbolises their ability to empathise and understand her emotion.

As someone who's been cheated on before, the fear of abandonment, the fear of putting too much of your heart into someone you wholly love never goes away. From my experience, I can never love someone openly, completely and whole heartedly even again. It's painful and almost every other night, I hurt from that experience. The pain Dani feels is so raw and so accurate that I actually cried with her during this scene.

You can argue if this film is a masterpiece or a disaster (for me it's a masterpiece), but you can't argue how sick and unique this scene is. I was dumbfounded for nearly 5 minutes. The few people who began laughing at this scene in the theatre (and the sex scene) just shut their mouths as they realised what this scene meant and how incredible the acting is. 200 people watched in dead silence. Fucking genius. Scenes likes this reminds me how powerful art of film is. RESPECT.
You don't really need imagination to come up with the sick idea of people copying your cries and painful wails as support and sharing pain. It's all real. This is what cults do. These women are master manipulators. This is how Dani was fully convinced to join their little cult. Cults prey on vulnerable, lonely people to manipulate them into joining.

One of the weirdest, disturbing and at the same time most powerful scenes in movie history in my opinion.
In many cultures, women crying in a group is a sign of extreme mourning. Especially young, unmarried girls. They're related with fertility, happiness and growth. In a more traditional society, women crying is the first sign of the start of a turmoil which is beyond the control of men. It's all programmed inside us. Which is why this scene is so disturbing.
Expressing empathy can always be a tool of manipulation. What I love about this scene is how we can see the beauty, from Dani’s perspective, of experiencing genuine empathy. And we can also see the horror of people who use such empathy for indoctrination. Lovebombing, empathy. Both can be true, even at the same time.
One of the movie's quieter themes, empathy/community, in action. Loved this movie.
I found this scene really really painful but at the same time beautiful, so much solidarity with the her sister's pain, so much relief.
The empathy seems sincere but this certainly is a covert form of indoctrination.

Honestly I think this scene is really important; it’s the one where it finally becomes 100% apparent how important it is to have community and support.
I really like this scene as well as the community shows it's success and failure of being a community. With Harmony the community is obviously a strong comfort of support and it presents the community as empathic/ as part of the girl. However, it later switches to the community mimicking Christian's sex literally after this scene and it just shows how the community feels disconnected from reality. His invasion of privacy makes the audience feel a sense of discomfort, distrust and lack of empathy with the community. I am literally in love with the director.
Well, this scene also alludes that Dani literally have No One left out there, in here she's one among the other, out there she is no one, alone and abandoned.

If you read the directors cut, he was tempted and he was going through lust from the time skin the fool dance when Maja kicked him from the side and was gazing at her when she would look or not look. He was already going through the spell. Not only that in the directors cut he was told, to make a decision to mate with Maja, but he wanted to think about it. When ulka gave him the drink he was going to turn it down, but looked at Maja and knew if he drank it he was going to be dazed and drugged ( almost like a way of numbing and not feeling bad for cheating on Dani). I literally thought the same... but he knew that the drink was going to get fucked up and he went with it. I watched this movie so many times and to make you open your eyes even more... he looked at Maja a lot, they were both eye fucking throughout the whole movie.
When he finished climaxing he felt guilt and knew what he did was wrong. When they ended up numbing him and not being able to talk or walk... he was screaming inside and begging Dani to forgive him. Of course it was too late.
That shared crying is so therapeutic. I'm actually sitting here jealous that Dani is getting that kind of treatment. I have to cry alone ffs.

I think both views are important and hit even harder when viewed as one. Yes, support and community are extremely necessary to human beings. And when someone has gone through the worst and are at their most vulnerable, support and community can be used as a tool to indoctrinate them into whatever you want. Dani is at her worst here: she has no family, her friends are gone, and her boyfriend has hurt her. She has nothing, but she doesn't turn to this cult because she feels alone. She turns to them because she feels loved and understood by them. She feels safe with the Hargas because their manipulation wasn't through fear or force. It was through love and empathy. They truly think they're helping Dani. Which makes it all so much worse

It’s uncanny but somehow very comforting how much this scene captured what it’s like to have a panic attack or an anxiety attack. The need to keep your body moving because you feel like you’re bursting, the uncontrollable sobs, and desperately wanting to feel tethered down to something. She’s a great actress.
To feel so alone, so disconnected, unseen, and then to be suddenly a part, sharing, and accepted. It's like going from learning to live with nothing, to having everything you have ever really needed.

For those who say this is empathy, it is not, it is manipulation. Dani is vulnerable, a person in a bad mental state can be easily manipulated, that’s what these women are doing they want to make her think she is accepted and loved within the cult so they can manipulate her. A traumatized person will sometimes completely trust someone who shows an ounce of affection, leading to the person being able to take control of them and make decisions for them. They are not Sharing her pain they are pretending to because her boyfriend never helped her express her pain so they see that as an opportunity to pretend to share her pain and mess with her head.
I don't know if I'm being harsh but I feel like the people who are saying "they treated her better" or "this is so wholesome" or "this is so symbolic" are missing the point of the scene entirely. This isn't "women supporting women" this is "women manipulating a woman after drugging and basically raping her boyfriend and pretending to be supportive in order to get her to join a cult"
what an amazing scene, how cathartic it must have been to have people to really feel with her. And it's amazing how perfectly this mirrors Dani's awful panic attack the night after her family dies. Thats probably why she didnt want to lay down in a bed, it probably gave her flashbacks. But for once those girls are actually feeling and screaming with her and it's what she always needed from the start, rather than just repressing her emotions and trying to not feel them anymore. This scene resonated with me a lot and drove home the point that this movie was about grief. I had wasted 4 years of my life on a girl that treated me like shit and cheated on me and when I found out I was devastated like this but my friends where there and yes I was drunk and super emotional but they weren’t and saw me on the ground broken, they proceeded to lock arms with me and mimic my pain just like this scene and it made me realize that these friends I neglected for 4 years cause of a girl were real family and shared my grief. When I saw this at home one night I texted them and let them know how much I appreciate them. Later on I found out the director had suffered from a bad breakup too, I never have seen such a surreal scene that seemed tailored for me but wow. Funny how ppl can only laugh at this I guess they haven’t found true friends either. (Yes I get the ppl in the movie are batshit crazy and a horror trope but I saw a deeper meaning that wasn’t just a coincidence).

This is horrifying to me. You can literally see her trying to crawl away but they grab her.
The scene before this is obvusouly really awkward and uncomfortable (even just hearing the sounds is making me feel super weird) but I laughed it off bc it was so crazy it was funny.
But when dani went up to the door to look, I cant even explain it. My stomach sank, it was the most anxious I felt the whole movie. Just knowing what she was going to see and how it would make her feel.

I haven’t seen many people say this but here’s my interpretation.
Personally, I didn’t feel any empathy being portrayed here. Instead this scene felt like the pinnacle of the nightmare Dani is trapped inside. She is realizing everything that is happening around her which is just too surreal to comprehend and only enhanced by the women screaming along with her. A truly nightmarish scenario becoming reality for Dani. I might be completely wrong though, this is just what I felt while watching
No, I agree. I felt like she was trying to crawl away from them and be alone with her thoughts, and they wouldn't let her go and that's when the agonized screaming starts. That's not about Christian. To me it seemed like there were a bunch of vultures surrounding her and she was literally in hell.
I’ve realized that the people in the camp mimic people in a vulnerable state or in pain. When the old man was screaming, they were screaming, when the ginger girl started moaning, they started moaning, when Dani started crying, they were crying, when the two people in the triangle started to burn and scream, they started to scream.
it's weird how many commenters here do not understand that one can find beauty in this scene while also understanding the cult is bad. lol. complicated dynamics like this are how people end up vulnerable to cults in the first place: dani isn't being supported in her life, so this seems like a kindness. the scene resonates with people because everyone has felt alone with grief before, and because of this kind of intensely emotional solidarity isn't something you see in film often. no one in these comments is pro-cult, lol.

Holy hell some comments here scared me, more than the movie itself, like yeah it's beautiful to have someone to comfort you but this is a clear case of manipulation they found her in a weak state of mind having a full panic attack and they attack her yes I say attack her when she was more vulnerable. To make her feel like she was being comforted by them but in reality, they were manipulating her.
They are feeling everything with her. It’s visceral and beautiful and absolutely terrifying all in one.
This scene means so much to me. I was in a similar situation to Dani when I watched this movie for the first time. When my abusive ex told me he started dating his best friend less than a month after we broke up knowing that she liked him all year, this is exactly how it felt .
