Watching Skins for the first time: Effy is one of the most enchanting, mysterious characters you can’t help to fall in love with. Now as an adult: a very sad child that didn’t get proper treatment, and would probably be very difficult to be around.
@Gabriel T I wouldn't call her selfish, but she was definitely oblivious. And everything else you said was 100% on point. The whole cast of characters in S1 - S4 were absolute train wrecks, and that's putting it lightly. But damn, was Gen 1 a complete mess of characters surrounded by a deeper mess of characters.
Both Effy and Tony are perfect examples of kids where the cool image they've drawn up is just a cover-up for a lot of insecurities and detachment within the family. Especially with Effy, there was an incapability of handling love because everyone loved her for all the wrong reasons, and not the person she truly was, except for Tony. She was enigmatic, but very troubled, but everyone was so enthralled by her image that it became toxic for her and the ones that loved her. To me, this show is one of the few shows to have realistic teenage characters with a lot of layers in the storylines, the third generation excluded (when the show sort of became a caricature of itself).
Just wanted to tell you your comment just made me click on another piece of media I read surrounding a character that also shares traits and dynamics as Effy, brilliant way of wording it! You're great.
She suffered from selective mutism as a child (she stopped talking when she was 6 and this is mentioned in a deleted scene) and in her early teens, probably due to her family situation. She doesn't follow rules, she's blatantly honest, doesn't understand social matters. And uses trauma and emotions control her. She could be both but she I resemble even to her body language language.
It's common for people who have had selective mutism to emulate the voices around them when they do speak. It's also a common symptom of a few mental health disorders including BPD which she very much shows symptoms of throughout the show. Her voice reflects those around her, it's another way to try and protect herself, likely without her even noticing.
I had to look selective mutism and it explains a lot about her, and myself.. I read that the reason is most often comes from anxiety and stress ( which she experienced a lot at home).

It amazes me how up to this day, the UK despite of its size, categorises people based on social status. BPD isn't caused by PTSD...PTSD results in low mood, Borderlines stalk, harass and are dangerous. It is a personality disorder just like NPD but Borderlines try to use the excuse that they were "traumatised". Psychiatrists hate Borderlines. If you have it I dare you to look through your notes.

I tried to be her so bad! I would go to bed planning to be mute from now on, but my adhd ass couldn’t even stand breakfast without a 10 minute monologue 😔✌️
not really. the panda birthday, she didnt drug the brownies. the freddie/cook thing, it was freddie idolizing her, she didn't show interest outside of sex. the jj party thing, it wasn't her job to watch him. the camping thing, she was attacked first (or at least felt attacked in a very real way from the drugs clashing with her bpd). every character in the show knew she was pretty and fun, everyone who hates her only hates her because she knows it too. people always wanna blame her for things that aren't only her fault, and sometimes aren't her fault at all.
Imho the main reason she's an involving character is that she has a pretty face. People get easily "hooked on" pretty faces and they tend to see them as more likable or more interesting. If her character was played by the same actress (meaning the acting would be the same), but with the face of someone less attractive (for example of someone like Pandora) she would receive much less positive reaction from the audience. In fact it would be hard to do it, as one of the key features of Effy is that she is pretty and she knows it well as it enables her to manipulate everyone around her, because people find it hard to resist her. I mean just look at what kind of actresses are usually shown in youtube shorts or those self-made music videos (Idk how it's called, but it's done by pretty much anonymous creators who take a song, for example Lana del Rey's song and play it to a video that consits of video footages coming from different movies). It's never actresses like Judy Dench, Meryl Streep, Maggie Smith etc., it's always pretty, rather young (in their 20s-30s) and very feminine women with either very sensual or inncocent and girly faces such as Brigitte Bardot, Marliyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Monica Belucci, young Brooke Shields, Winona Ryder etc. And as much it is not fair to favorise people for their looks, we can't help it, that's just how our brain works. I know that some people will say that beauty might be sometimes a curse, but pretty people are on average treated better, they can get away with worse things and we have more empathy for them- they even get shorter sentences (again, on average) in courts! We are able to forgive pretty Effy more than we would forgive someone who is less cute.
@@nepeta_cataria_007 this is true, we're largely a beauty-obsessed society. I know people, English in particular; who change their accents at their workplace in order to be accepted and not being segregated by the community.
It's like a caste system.
Besides that, _Skins_ played a major role in my life, and my friends at the time.
I think because I am English, I never knew that it was unusual. I thought every country had heavy class based systemß
Do they not? The US does also and so do people toward any different nationality when they are in another country theyre perceived in a certain manner because stereotypes@@sbo3
@@Jkens well, people always talk about how the US doesn't have a class based system, or vice versa they talk about how much class changes our lives in the UK. I mean it is literally built into our society from a historical point of view. You don't often find people who are descendant from literal aristocrats in the US eh?
@@sbo3 yeah true but class can be based on celebrity these days just be lucky enough to be born rich or famous or in royalty in our case
I was 13 when I first saw that smoking scene and when I was 19 I smoked for the first time without coughing cause Effy taught me how to smoke 🤣🤣🤣 I never forgot that scene. They always told me I smoke in a weird way but I didn't care cause Effy's advice was spot on.
Thiiiiiiisssss!!!! Although the first time smoking weed is hard cause it burns and it dries out your throat in an instant lmao
Wait how does she teach u lol
@@Kay-wl9vr when she shows one of the Fitch twins how to smoke, she says inhale and then breathe in again until you feel it in your chest. The second breath is a great tip.
the day i started to smoke was when i watched this scene, i was maybe 14, i didn't cough like the time i tried before because of effy's explanations, i still smoke to this day, sometimes i just think about her, how everything started
Honestly, same. I've never coughed because of that 😂
i first watched skins as a non english speaker with spanish subs, and rewatching it now with a *really* slight knowledge on british accents makes their interactions completely different (from the pun around that girl from the girls school saying "frands" to effy's london accent in her spin off episode). i had a vastly different accent to kids i was born in because of my parents coming from the opposite side of the country and learned to talk like local kids to look cool and the way i was raised to look more natural around older people, but i'd have never imagined accents varying according to people's class in the uk and them changing it depending who they're talking to
I definitely don't identify with Effy as someone who dealt with selective mutism. I don't think she was mute stemming from anxiety.
i think her mutism was from anger maybe?
@@cheycheyfriend247 that’s what I think it’s from too. The anger of being neglected and ignored and all in all her home life angered her a lot, and when I’m angry or sad, I’m quiet too, I don’t want to talk, so it could be that she was just filled with anger all the time
I definitely think that she is autistic, (coming from an autistic girl who really relates to all of the stuff she struggles with.)
@@Someone-mi4vt agree. just from this video- she changes her voice based on the situation which is masking. changing accents/having an unplaceable or different accent to those around you is common trait of autism. plus the mutism.
Kaya is half brazilian and I very much think she always speaks with a brazilian accent. Perhaps she chances accents because of that, we often do that in our second language
Skins was something special ❤
I will never understand why she had that fake accent in season 1
She didn't speak for years so she was getting used to her own voice, imitating accents she heard
one the best things mtv ever aired in my country, effy always got me mesmerized as a kid
Fine, I’ll rewatch Skins for the 30th time 🙄
the actress was a child!
14 in the first season
Pandora was hands down my favourite character
Its almost like they thought after going to a posh school for 6 months she would have a posher accent but it would only be believable if it were a put-on around people at the school to fit in.
love her
Effy is a Classic example of BPD, caused by CPTSD and PTSD…
BPD isn't caused by PTSD...PTSD results in low mood, Borderlines stalk, harass and are dangerous. It is a personality disorder just like NPD but Borderlines try to use the excuse that they were "traumatised". Psychiatrists hate Borderlines. If you have it I dare you to look through your notes.
Skins and sugar rush were so underrated.
Sugar rush was the dogs bollocks they only cancelled s3 due to not having slots to show case it what a waste
@@Jackeeypoos It was, I remember my friend's dad calling me all the names under the sun when he caught us watching the bath and toe scene. I never knew how narrow-minded he was until that day. I think he thought we were doing the same thing.
There's an australian show called Slide thats got a similar thing to skins going on and I think that was super underrated 👌
Sugar rush promoted p/dophilia and d@te r@pe I am not a fan!
OMG! Sugar Rush!! I was crushing on Andrew Garfield before even knowing what was his name back then 😳❤️
I tried to be her so bad! I would go to bed planning to be mute from now on, but my adhd ass couldn’t even stand breakfast without a 10 minute monologue 😔✌️
I still smoke the way Effy taught us
I hated her so much I couldn’t stand her brooo
This is awesome! Thanks! 👍🏽
my American ass can't tell the difference between these T.T
Why am I watching this
One of the most narcissistic charaters I have seen ...
not really. the panda birthday, she didnt drug the brownies. the freddie/cook thing, it was freddie idolizing her, she didn't show interest outside of sex. the jj party thing, it wasn't her job to watch him. the camping thing, she was attacked first (or at least felt attacked in a very real way from the drugs clashing with her bpd). every character in the show knew she was pretty and fun, everyone who hates her only hates her because she knows it too. people always wanna blame her for things that aren't only her fault, and sometimes aren't her fault at all.
Attractiveness can give you a significant leg up in life. there are some rare downsides. but she was so sultry and enigmatic on the surface that it made her a magnet for fans to make all these gifs and edits and romanticize her as a broken beautiful girl
@@nepeta_cataria_007that’s an interesting take. I think the character is meant to be pretty as you said. But i think about pretty ppl having it easy that’s especially true of pretty and rich ppl. Certain women can be really mean and passive aggressive to pretty and poor women
@@savspicious She knowingly made two best friends contest over her just for the sake of it. You say that she showed no interest but that just isn't true as she knowingly led them both on and would flip flop between them.
God damn I miss Skins seasons 1-4. Is it possible to get series (or skins) like that any more I wonder D:
euphoria
Overthinking this. Aside from the being born backwards speech, her voice is always the same
nah she defo has a more working class accent till season 2
@@katiemp670 she says about 3 words until season 2. I'm sure if you clipped her saying "wanker" in the car and played it beside her saying it any time after that when she supposedly sounds different, it would sound the same.
HAHAHAHAHA she's 100% council estate in the 2:20 clip and she doesn't sound anything like that in any clip before or after. The Unseen Skins is the development of making her ever-so-slightly more well spoken. And then from then on it's all middle class closer to SP. It's very easy to hear a difference
@@slushpuppie19 how can someone be "100% council estate" (not a dialect or accent btw, there are council estates all over the country, some in very well to do areas) when saying literally one word? I'm Northern but I say "wanker" like a Cockney because I think it's hilarious. I also say some swear words with a very posh accent because they sound more effective when properly enunciated. I'm not Cockney or posh, even if they weren't polar opposites to begin with, and yet.
@@mydogeatspuke Well she says more than one word. She also says it in a completely different accent to the rest of the video. Don't really know why people can't hear that. Must be a lot more obvious if you're southern I guess.
Ohhh Kaya. Beautiful Beautiful Kaya 🌹🌹🌹
Gosh, love her but she went down the road massively
I love Effy cause she's always zero effort. :D
Kaya's so damn pretty!
thank you
Effy is one of the characthers that till this day haunt me. She suffered so much, and had so many bad choices... its like they didnt do her justice(I stopped watching when the cast changed on the last seasons)
Geez that's all over the place.
Pandora jump scare
Whats the vocal difference between london/working class and southern middle class
Her voice before smoking 🥰
Her early accent isn’t ‘working class’ it just isn’t rp
Regional accent doesn’t = working class
I love her
I still quote "wanka" to this day lol
They should’ve stuck with her selective mutism during her series
She was really quiet still
I raw dogged a girl with a posh accent in a restaurant i was cheffing at during her college graduation dinner 😂 good times. Always loved that accent though.

Katie was homophobic so wtf?
Maybe they confused Katie with emily

Why did she decide to finally start talking. Never was addressed

she didn't decide to be mute. She wants to talk, but simply can NOT. She suffer for less known anxiety disorder called "Selective Mutism".
@jacktechindonesia no.... effy explains it in one of the "ad" videos why she stopped speaking. It was to be like an actress or character (can't remember which) that she admired

Gen 2 : Season 3 & 4

Aww 💜
Her voice likely changed with going to the all girls school
it’s not a london/working class accent
i dont wish anyone bpd or adhd or all these mental disorders. dont wish it to yourself, just be happy you dont have it.. some ppl really need to stop faking
ADHD isn't a mental disorder, it's a form of neurodivergence. Please don't put ADHD in the same category as BPD. Borderlines need to be locked up.
@@jenjones90BRO what is it with you and folks with BPD
@@jenjones90 People with mental disorders are also neurodivergent. Neurodivergence incudes anyone’s whose brain does not function “typically”. So BPD, Bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, OCD, etc. all make a person neurodivergent. So actually, using YOUR logic, in that respect they are in the same category as ADHD.
The difference, aside from the actual symptoms, is that BPD develops due to trauma, whereas ADHD is typically something people are born with.
