Nerdy fact but Akira Yamaoka didn't knew what he was doing, he told on an interview that this was the first time he did this kind of Industrial Ambience music. It's crazy though how good his work was.
Thank you! Highly stylized dialogue can be so interesting and it's one of the things I love about this series that I hope we don't completely lose with the upcoming SH2 remake 💖
In this age of Ps1 Styled Horror Games from Puppet Combo, Chilla's Art and others, I wouldn't mind if Konami released a remaster of this game on Steam without changing the visuals too much. I think it still holds up.
I "day one"d Silent Hill in 1999 and it was amazing; even almost 24(!) years later I love deep diving into clips like this to learn more. Great video analysis!
I totally agree with you. Even if the voice acting was intended or not it does work out for this game, it feels like they are in a dream and thats why they sound and respond so slow, giving us that eerie kinda vibe.
Appreciate the nod to the soundtrack, genius to evoke Portishead's dark mysterious trip hop mixed with industrial ambience and completely juxtaposed by 90s alt rock. It balances the campness, mystery and eeriness of classic survival horrror, which yeah is mirrored by the dialogue and its execution.
David Lynch is a major inspiration for many of these atmospheric, dreamy horror games. Shenmue, in some ways, also has a Lynchian quality-particularly in the dialogue, which sometimes feels strange and surreal. Robert Bresson’s cinema has similarities as well, with its use of 'un-acting' actors who talks with no emotion.
Sheer coincidence, a day after this video and I happen to be playing this game for the first time in Japanese. I'm pretty sure the pauses in the dialog is to allow for the Japanese audiences to be able to read the subtitles at the bottom for their version of the game (the original version). Despite that, it definitely adds to the eeriness of the experience.
@aarongrajeda1563 oh I'm very familiar with almost everything surrounding this game and I even played it in 99 before learning English :) I've always said this game is cursed and I still think there's many hidden subliminal references like what happens when you die and go to hell, Insanity etc. My favourite silent hill lore RUclipsrs are nubzombie and fungo. They both explain the series very well
Recently I played Silent Hill 2 and I haven't played it for years. Still the game is mind blowing. I played lots of horror games but no game made me feel the emotions that I have while playing Silent Hill 2. I hope the remake will be faithful to the original.
As someone who has only ever played the remake of Resi Evil 2 that voice acting is SENDING me lol I'm so glad you enjoyed Silent Hill! The next two games are even better imo you're in for a treat with these games. Also don't know if you know but Silent Hill 3 is actually a direct sequel to this game while 2 is a seperate story, so it kind of makes more sense to play the 3rd game next then 2 which is confusing haha. Not that it really affects anything lol just a preference thing. Cant wait for you to play them!
I think this is similar with Shenmue. People make fun of the slowness and awkward acting, but the minimal words and slow pacing blends really well with the sad music, and the main character in particular still has a very sad demeanor about him that makes it more realistic.

Lmao I love that

Iconic that "Phil singlehandedly destroying the NHS" made it into this video
i'm only capable of destruction and chaos xoxo
I love the thumbnail of your recently live streamed silent hill 2, it was really funny.
I really think the developers could have made this game significantly more terrifying but they decided not to

The fact that you got to go to a showing of Inland Empire is causing extreme jealousy within me 😂
@@mj2037 the fact I had never seen it and didn't know what I was getting myself into ... honestly what a life-changing movie
