there are/were way too many actresses trying to make it big in hollywood, some people don't even get any recognition at all. but of course naomi watts is a great actress.
I just wish that she worked more often, but besides that Netflix show, she picks her parts well & always delivers so I'm eagerly awaiting the release of her next project

Loveeee how the Winkie’s scene has Naomi so stressed… she really feels what the character is experiencing.
After watching this movie, i completely got what Martin Scorsese meant about having more films driven by individual vision rather than being manufactured product. This movie is so bizarre yet a dream-like experience that you enjoy watching, thinking about it, without having concrete answers for anything and leaving it for you to answer it for yourself. It makes me understand Scorsese's point about having more directors like David Lynch.

@Lance Lanny everything Tarantino ever made was recycled from other people, same goes for most of the filmmakers you listed. They were all inspired by other people. Cinema is just as alive as it’s ever been, people just can’t stand new things. Once you get old you get to absorbed with the past to the point that you can’t recognize what is great now.
@Lance Lanny sure Joker and films like it are recycled, but there are always recycled films. There always have been, always will be. To try and simplify it in that way is to ignore all the great, original films that are released all the time. Parasite, Inception, Get Out, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Her, and Arrival are just some of the extremely popular original films from the past decade. There are hundreds of others.
Even the behind the scenes felt intense and sinister. All those little inaudible sidebars with Lynch. Sheesh! And Naomi was clearly in character even when the camera wasn't rolling. A rare look into how a great piece of art is made.
Many artists live in their own internal world, and dialogue with themselves. The difference with Lynch is…he is clearly unafraid of expressing his unconventional ideas AND does so boldly with laser focus. No “shoe gazing” for him. His force of Will to give birth to his ideas is astounding.
Not quite. They're laughing and having fun often, and Naomi reverts to her British accent between takes while she mingles with other actors.

David Lynch seems so sensitive and cautious with actors, you always see it in these making-of videos. Explains why they come back to work with him again and again.

He's so nice
He's like the anti-Kubrick when it comes to his actors. He's actually good friends with a lot of them.
He's a real "actor's director". Not cautious, but sensitive to what he needs to give them for them to a:know what he needs in the scene, and b: get into the headspace required. All actors are different in that respect, so that sensitivity to the individual with the warmth and complete trust he communicates brings out stellar performances. And makes the working experience really special.
Everyone who used to work with David tells that he's one off the most sensitive and kind persons they have ever met and that he creates the very special and comfortable atmosphere on the set

Kind of interesting she still held an American accent while breaking character.

Kubrick is one of my favorite directors, but I can't deny he can be toxic. The Shining is an awesome movie but I also can't deny how toxic it is behind the scenes. To be honest, I've always find The Shining to be a little overrated as it's not the 10/10 everyone say it is. I'd still say it's a top 10 horror and perhaps one of the scariest but the behind the scenes put me in bad taste. MD, on the other hand, is perfect from beginning to end.
Naomi Watts is such an incredible actress. The vulnerability that she is able to bring to the surface as Diane/Betty in this film is one of the greatest performances of all-time.
when I first watched the film back in 2001, I thought the two Naomis were played by different actresses. Her performance is that great!
I remember watching MD with my friend and he also didn't believe it was the same actress.

Same thing happened to me. It threw off the whole second half of the film. In my eyes the actors looked and acted completely different, even Naomi’s teeth changed between the two characters. I ended up having such a bad interpretation of what happens in the film.
She was so awesome in this role!
The way she transforms from a 2D to a 3D character in that audition scene blew my mind.
I do not think we will ever get a movie like this ever again. At least from Hollywood. This is pure, unadulterated art for art's sake. No American production will ever dare anything like this

god, Naomi at 21:50 is so fucking good. to be able to do something like that on command in a huge room with like 20 or 30 people around you working, all depending on you to nail it. just incredible. that shot is basically the emotional lynchpin of the movie and she just absolutely fucking crucifies it

I like David Lynch but I object to the scene in the movie it was totally unnecessary. He could have come up with something else. But it is what it is David Lynch is a lovable weirdo but I object to that scene.

Seeing her get emotional even after the take was done (the second one) made me tear up ngl. Just knowing she was taking it seriously. I can feel Diane's rage/rejection/devastation in that scene, she really did it well

Blue Velvet is a great film, but to me Mullholand Drive is simply a masterpiece by Lynch.
This movie is a masterpiece of Hollywood broken dreams, sex, jealousy and psychological war with ones self and this cast, director and crew made it a standard to be measured.

This is clear proof that award organizations don't always recognize the best. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscars) didn't even nominate Naomi Watts for Best Actress for her performance in Mulholland Dr.
To their everlasting shame.

I've never seen the filmmaking process in such detail. My goodness, it's extremely detailed and intricate!
and incredibly, incredibly collaborative. even with a production as director-driven as a Lynch film, it really can't be said how much of a group effort it is. there's so much expertise and care and coordination that goes into everything going on here; the lighting, the production design, the camera operation. there's something really incredible about so many people working on such a scale and with such a shared vision to make good art.
Crying, being afraid, being angry or just walking down the street alone, the hardest thing for an actor is to just forget that all that stuff is going on around them. As soon as you’re out of frame it’s a madhouse. And the camera is huge and often just inches from their face but they can’t notice it even for a millisecond or the take is ruined. They make it look so easy.
23:15 this moment in the movie when Diana is so tense and she gets scared of this sound of glass and the tear running on her face... is just incredible!
Incredible to see Naomi Watts, one of the greatest actors alive so hard on herself. Oppose that with David Lynch who in interviews seems so uninterested be so attentive and gentle to his actors and crew.
She was unknown at the time.

I don't know if you heard. Lynch was planning to film stuff this year but for obvious reasons he couldn't.
He just released an 18 hour film in 2017! We all do but the man has worked his whole life. He’s got a daily weather report where we can see him everyday in the mean time.

If anything I'd like one more season of twin peaks, or another twin peaks movie to conclude the cliffhanger. Although, I wouldn't die unhappy if it stayed a cliffhanger because it was pretty good and head scratching in a good way.

Eh Lynch has been misunderstood since the beginning
Wow, watching that made me realize what true acting is. It was so intense.
12:30 The sheer admiration in his eyes for David Lynch is astonishing.
There are millions of people in the world who could act in such a film if given the chance. The magic is finding those who can act and happen to be uniquely attractive. That's Hollywood.
He works like a chef - clean. The preparation, the verifying of the ingredients, the clean execution - the result is a known that could be repeated with variations if needed. Love the man.
He's so humble for someone so curious and inventive - again, like some top flight chefs.
His eyes show the passion and focus.
His eyes are everywhere on that set.
Bottom line, Mr Lynch takes full responsibility for every step of this process of minute increments of story.
He succeeds, bit by bit. -

I just adore David Lynch
He had me at "Eraserhead" in 1983. I couldn't believe what I was watching; I was blown away. His movies (and his art) are strange, mysterious, sometimes disturbing, but also familiar in a way I can't explain
David once said in an interview that at one time, he thought he might need psychotherapy for all the strange ideas and visions he has, so he made an appointment. Sitting with the shrink, he asked them if they could help him and what would happen to all the stuff rolling around in his head. He wanted to know how it would affect his creativity. The shrink told him it would probably diminish it, so he never went back.

I'm sensitive to negative energies and images; I just don't watch them anymore, but I'll watch his movies over and over. It's like he's taking me by the hand (like Camilla) and gently leading me into his dreams and psyche. Inviting me to decide what I think and feel about them. A good-natured sharing

if i were to guess 14:15 is less a problem with being filmed per se than it is with getting so close while they're trying to be intimate and comfortable. could also be that sometimes the things a director tells an actor is context or motivation for the characters which the director would want to keep unknown/mysterious to viewers (as is obviously important to Lynch)

It is sad. Laura is excellent in this film also but no one seems to remember her, especially because Naomi's characters have the more drastic change between them. I hope Laura is still working. I'd love to see her work with Lynch again.

Everyone, I mean everyone was great in this film! However. Naomi was light years (still is) better then anyone in the industry. As for Lynch...he's Lynch :). Best movie I've seen since its release!

I'll never forget the first time i watched this film, i was in awe. The way lynch can capture surreal and unconscious feelings with what are seemingly random and bizarre events is truly magical. When he's good, like in this and Twin Peaks, he's truly sui generis. The man is a genius. We forgive Dune. :)

I really enjoy these glimpses into making a movie. It's all us non-film folks have to see what really goes on, man it seems so hectic out there. Constant movement. And yet the end product you don't see any of it, it's pretty remarkable. A million moving parts all to get a perfect shot.
I smiled and laughed in almost of all of this bts scenes I freaking love lynch and his incentive methods especially with naomi, angelo saying lynch is his best wife is pretty relatable ahhh and also loved justin's interactions with lynch lmao I mean who wouldn't have a cigarette with lynch or justin
For me as a musician, played in some bands but mostly solo, i always was fascinated by and in love with seeing people like these working together on a film. "The Sopranos" and anything David Lynch comes to mind. What a wonderful experience it must be to work together with people like that. The closest i came to sth like this was when i did the music for a dance piece.
I mean, just imagine David Lynch coming over and you set up a recorder and you listen to him, play, listen, play and without too many words, you create the most biutiful music for the most amazing movie.....

Best movie of the last 30 years
Lynch movies aren't for everyone.... but he sure makes movies for me.
His biggest challenge is the blind faith he needs from studios. The only way to make a Lynch project is hand him the money he wants for his budget, stay out of his way, and have faith what he makes will be good. You can't interfere, you can't second guess, you have to just let Lynch be Lynch.
Yeah it's sad that nobody wants to give him money to make his weird and wonderful art. There may not be a mainstream audience for him, but there certainly is an audience ready to gobble up whatever he makes. I think he's working on a project for Netflix right now. Considering how stuffed his films are with ideas and the success of the Twin Peaks revival, maybe television is the medium best suited to his vision now (and considering how "peak" tv is right now, I'm excited for it).
@@looney1023 Might be naivety on my part but can he just put down his own money and make a project and release it on his own terms? Or is there a part of the process I'm missing?
@@filmmike I believe he started to late in his career. I'm not sure the budget of this movie, but I imagine it's a ton of money to have ready to go or even on credit, rich director or not. Coppola tried this with apocalypse now and lost a tremendous amount of money.
@@user61920 That sounds about right. Lynch self produced his first film independently: Eraserhead 1977 . But as you know traditional film making (with a full professional crew) is extremely expensive. He was a "director for hire" for a little while, making Dune in 1984. But it seems like it took over a decade to build enough clout for production companies to invest in him.

I tried some acting and I took it too hard screwing up lines. It was way too stressful. I give actors a lot of credit for doing it repeatedly after making mistakes.
lot of people don't know what truly goes into real film acting and think it's easy. they associate acting with what seth rogan does

Directing cinema is the highest art form. It is directing dozens or even hundreds of individual artists, hand selected, to collaborate according to a single vision. Giant expense, time, work, labor, and it is rarely done well, and only a few times in a generation do we get someone who does it as good as Lynch.
So magical atmosphere . All there seemed like a special united family giving birth patiently to a new golden child . Davis taking care as the father . off course . And great Badalamenti interview !

Man, Naomi seems so insecure. There’s something strangely comforting in that. I watched an interview with them about this film and she apparently had a horrible time getting roles and David kind of discovered her. Life is strange.
