I'm an old man who still gets chills and tears over the last 30 minutes of LOTR/RTOTK... The recovery and reunion, the coronation, and especially... the very sad parting at the end. The music speaks to the heart. And just so ya know... Peter Jackson IS A HOBBIT !
Man.. What a movie! Look at this incredibly beautiful detail; music changes depending on who the character is. When Merry and Pippin and Gimli entered music goes soft and friendly, then Legolas and Aragorn came and music goes to the Royal form because they are the Kings of their kind. And last, when Sam entered. Music goes dramatic and describes their suffering on all this road togather.. FANTASTIC
there are lots of reasons why they couldn't have flown to mordor. First of all eagles are not taxis. Gwaihir only helps Gandalf on orthanc because he was flying past at the time and still only dropped him off at nearby Rohan. At the end of the day, eagles didnt care about what sauron was doing at the time. They certainly wouldnt have risked their lives for what they viewed to be lesser people. Also, they would have almost certainly died. Your right, they would have flown to high for arrows, but no matter how high they flow saurons eye would easily have seen. In the film Elrond says that saurons eye is fixed on rivendell which is hundreds of miles away so he would easily have seen a load of huge eagles carrying alot of his greatest enemies and some very, very important people. He would have sent nazgul on fellbeasts which would easily dispose of eagles (keep in mind the eagles are messengers, not warriors at all). Also, in the very small chance that they did fly so high that they were above mount doom, you cant just drop it in. They would have to land because the ring can only be destroyed in a certain chamber of mount doom (called the crack of doom) and would not be destroyed If it was just thrown into any random part od the volcano. If they landed they certainly would have been killed by the orcs that guard mount doom. Yes, orcs usually guard mount doom, there weren't any at the time when frodo destroyed the ring because aragorn and his army had marched tot he black gate so sauron had sent most of his orcs to the black gate. In the very, very small chance that they did get into the crack of doom, they wouldnt have destroyed the ring. In fact, it's completely impossible to willingly destroy the ring. Keep in mind, the ring has a mind of it's own (it has about 70 percent of sauron inside it) so it can choose when to exert its powers of corruption the most. When it's in mount doom and has the possibility of being destroyed, it exerts it powers of corruption so much that the person who has the ring would find it completely impossible to destroy it. No matter who in the fellowship you gave it to, none of them would get close to having the will power to do it. It took an accident for the ring to be destroyed. For example if frodo had given the ring to sam in mount doom or isildur had given it to Elrond, neither of them would have any chance of destroying it. Finally, the fact that you believe that this is a plot hole shows that you weren't paying attention to the story. Literally the main theme of LOTR is corruption. The more powerful you are the more you will be corrupted. I personally would not want to be thousands of feet in the air with a ring that will be taken by the eagles for themselves and we woukd probably just be dropped/forgotten about. There literally isnt a single plot hole in LOTR and the fact that people believe that this is still a plot hole is ridiculous.
It's even worse when you realise that Frodo's changed demeanour after the destruction of the Ring is a direct metaphor for JRR Tolkien's experiences after his return from fighting in the Great War. He suffered from what was then called 'shell shock' although today he would have been diagnosed with severe PTSD.

@@scooterninja3479 He means that he could go home physically but he could never go home mentally, because his experiences had destroyed the person he once was.
It occurs to me that Frodo probably for a bit thought he was dead right there! Last he saw Gandalf he was falling to his doom and now he sees him in white with his last memory being on mount doom facing certain death?
oh man. normal films have happy endings, Return of the king is an orgy of happy endings with multiple climaxes (Frodo awakening, Aragorn kneeling, return to Shire, ship into the ocean, Sam returns to Shire AGAIN)
When aragorn entered and the royal lotr theme was played I realised that not only aragorn but Legolas was also a prince of mirkwood and Gandalf is the top most of their order...it was the fellowship of the kings
Ok, lets look at this from Frodo's point of view. Gandalf is dead, he's sure he and Sam will die soon, He wakes confused, flying in the talons of a huge eagle going where? He then wakes in a room, bathed in light wearing white, under white bed covers with Gandalf in white, standing at the beds end, then his friends show up (Hobbits in white shirts) and finally Sam is at the opening. It would take some explaining to convince me I wasn't dead. ;-)
I always saw this whole sequence as a symbolic death and resurrection for Frodo. He was already prepared for death as it was, after enduring so much pain and suffering as the Ringbearer, and the physical, mental, emotional torment throughout the entire quest. He was ready to welcome death, and when he awakens, he finds himself in a new life, free of the Ring, and Gandalf having that angelic/God-like appearance, when Frodo had thought Gandalf was gone for good after his battle with the Balrog. It was too good to be true for him, to be alive and reunited with his friends again.
The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings films were both filmed at the same time Hugo Weaving would have travelled back and forth from Australia to New Zealand everytime to film all six films in a matter of five to six years
I get Frodo is a hero but the real hero is Sam. Yes Frodo did almost fail at the end but if Sam had never decided to stay with Frodo the ending would of been much different and Frodo would of lost to the ring much much sooner.
In this scene frodo looks at sam as if they in love? Its a beautiful scene reuniting of fellowship minus one? One of mine all time favorite movie and have seen it so many times.
