Mill the heads and get the compression up, 10-10.5/1 on pump gas.

    Hey Brent,
Tim here, i'm surprised ur cam has 10° more on the exhaust.....i wudda thought 8° more wudda done ok, i've been of the school that 6° to 8° more on exhaust is where the happy spot is.....but i know SBF exhaust ports are small, and maybe that extra is creating TQ, cuz its scavenging better.....SUPER COOL vid, and i may be totally wrong.......but ur INCREASE of area under the curve is SUBSTANTIAL!!!....i wudnt expect anything less from you!!....as ur tolken Pontiac sub'r, this was ANOTHER great vid, i dont care WHO made the engine.....I LIKE IT ALL!!.....and i DO say keep it OEM as u can, i LI E the underdog stuff as well!!!....PEACE my brother!!

I'm a firm believer in a custom cam if it done by someone who knows what they are doing with your combination.
I haven't done any dyno test, but I have done real-world testing in drag racing. Huge difference for my combinations.

Also port the p heads and see how good someone could get at a dollar point vs sticking aftermarket heads on. But at home style bang for the buck clean up.
Also since heads are off maybe talk about optimized quench and headgasket selection. It may only be worth a tiny bit, but if you have the heads off and replace headgaskets why not?

Being that the “E” cam was to pass emissions and is 30+ years old it makes me more impressed at what it accomplished

Ive heard you can feel 10 horsepower in a normal streetcar, so over 10hp everywhere oughtta feel good in a daily hot rod for sure!

Your cam should be compared to the stock cam. Drop in spring kit+ cam+ dual plane intake+ carb+ spacer = 350HP & 350TQ. The last explorer 302 I took apart was a zero deck specimen, and if the P chambers were closer to 62 (what is normal?) and not 65, you could probably skip the spacer and shut the hood. That without porting. Your carbureted version started at 258HP.

Port the P heads to show what can be done with OEM cast iron heads.
Everyone with a Foxbody started out with stock heads and then modded from there, as their budget allowed.
Aluminum aftermarket heads were always a 'someday Im gonna' mod.

hi Brent, how are you? It would be great, if you make a video showing what type of approach you do when you design a custom camshaft. I'm pretty sure that it has involved a lot of things, but a quick overlook could be great to learn something that not too many people talk about. Regards from Argentina!

Nice work! that 10+lb ft difference over the whole curve means two identical fox bodies where one always pulls a fender and door length over your buddies car and pisses him off! from here, I agree a step to see would be a good effort on the P heads - 1.90 intake valve and proper bowl.throat work, unshroulding, same on exhaust if the port can handle a 1.55 or so valve and maybe some work on the ports themselves. I'd love to see it! thanks for the effort, Jeff.

The P heads always like extra exhaust duration , a bigger exhaust valve also 1.60 .
Had similar cam 218 228 Isky
With 1.7 rockers made 300 wheel hp

My thoughts are how much do you have in the heads you bought vs porting those p heads. And what is your guess on the outcome of each, kind of a bang for the buch approach. The average person would do the same. Max effort as a bang for the buck approach or as cheap as possible.
Seems like this project was, or is that sort of project.
We all like maximum power for less. The balance is where most people have to live.
Do I use what I have or sell these and use that money to port these others. That's a tough question for most. It almost always comes down to what will give me the most power and for how much.
I always selected power if I could afford it.

Two questions for you brent on this round of stuff.
    1. With that cam is there room to play with thin headgaskets to tighten quench up on the explorer stock bottom end?
    2. If you were to grind a different cam that wasnt needing to be similar to the e303, as in a max effort type deal with factory parts would you do things differently or settle on what you did and then go into the heads?
Basically if you took a stock bottom end explorer engine, stuffed a cam in and and worked on the heads how good could it get? Then maybe stick a plate on it to spray your way into a bigger number. Im thinking budget foxbody, ranger, ect would do pretty decent with something like this.
Car craft did something similar but with an off the shelf lunati cam years ago.

@@hotrodray6802 I understand that. Where I'm located machine shop work is extremely expensive and if someone can optimize what they have at home it maybe worth it to them.

I want to see what can be dun with the oem heads! I know aftermarket heads will make more power! But once you go aftermarket heads i loose interest becouse you then go to level im not apart of. I will probably never have aftermarket heads. There are still alot of guys like me.
Put it this way, anybody can spend money & bolt on power with aftermarket heads! But are you a good engine builder? Can you make power with oem heads? Brent, i know you can, but somtimes this is how i veiw some of the engine builds i see on other channels. What is interesting about buying a exotic head & making alot of power. Its more impressive to know actual work & crastfmanship went into a engine.
