  • Driving, driving and more driving. A few friends and I took advantage of a sunny afternoon to get out and do some driving. No mods, no maintenance, all driving. I took out my 2013 991.1 C2, Ben was driving his modified 2015 991.1 C2S and Clay gave us more than a run for our money with his stock 2016 981 Cayman GTS. Enjoy!

    James, my 981 Cayman S is also freakishly quick. It has Soul Performance Street headers with 200 cell cats. It also has PSE, PDK and Sport Chrono Pkg. The PSE doesn't make it quicker, but it does make it more thrilling. I'm definitely in the 340HP range with the headers. I won't call out any models, but nothing earlier than a 2016 model beginning with a 9 has ever beaten it from launch control. Of course, I know my place in the order of things. I also have the same 911 Turbo Wheels as your friend's white 991. They were a very expensive option.

    I could be wrong here but It doesn’t sound like your in manual PDK mode and dropping a gear down when on the move - auto mode will be slower to react on kick-down which might be why the 981 is getting away

  • @KosmicHRTRacingTeam

    I am not familiar with your spec, but given your HP claims, it appears you have a Base 991.1, correct? Porsche is very accurate on how cars perform given wt, power and gearing. They underestimate 0-60 times and HP, but the ratings are consistent throughout the range. That said, why are you surprised to be getting beat by cars that either have more HP or less HP and much lighter? You bought a Base, it is what it is, if you wanted a drag car, you bought the wrong car. If you wanted an ultramodern automatic/PDK that is fairly fun to drive, you probably bought the right car. I happen to have a 997 C2S (6mt). My brother just upgraded from a 991.1 C2S to a 991.2 GTS, my dad just upgraded from a 991.1 C2S to a 991.2 C2S (because he thinks he needs to critical tenths of a second off the line). Both are PDK. I’m not going to try and race these cars and expect to have a chance from a standing start, drag race. But frankly, I like my car better, it sounds way better, I prefer NA over FA, I prefer 6mt over PDK. I feel like for my preference, I have the perfect car and it is fun AF in canyons and to drive around town. But I also am fully aware that a drag race or a race on a proper circuit, I’m going to get smoked! Just enjoy the ride, even if it is sightly slower. Drag racing Porsche’s is Lame anyway, as that isn’t what the car is built for. Get proper alignment done and take it to the track. Maybe even hire a driving instructor and start working on your times and technique.

    Great video. Clay needs to get some mesh grills for those front radiators. I have the same car and they help from rocks messing up the radiators. I think Gov. Walz told the highway patrol to let speeders go(bigger problems to worry about), so I think you guys should be pretty clear.

    • @claysteffens3875

    • @bradw922
      @bradw922 4 года назад

      @@claysteffens3875 I got some online. They come with zip ties. (it looks a little ghetto, if you get down on your hands and knees and look real close) With the black trim, and the black zip ties on the extreme edges, you cant see them from more than about 5 feet away. No need to remove bumper. Takes about 10 minutes at the most to install. Blocks all the flying rocks from damaging the radiators and keeps the leaves and road crud out. They sell them for side vents also but I have not bothered doing that. Keep up all the great videos. I live in CA but might be back in MN late summer to pick up a 718 Spyder. CA dealers wanted $10K over MSRP. Minneapolis Porsche will do it for MSRP.

    James- a couple quick items and, yes, I know this comes across as an elitist snob but oh well. Your 911 is 350 hp stock and the Cayman is 340 hp. The 911 weighs around 3,200 lbs (?) and the Cayman around 2,950 lbs (?). Plus driver weight can add an extra 20-100 lbs depending. So, yes, your car is going to probably (almost definitely) be slower, but it is still a 911. While the Cayman is a great car (as are most all Porsches) it is not and will never be a 911; it doesn't have the heritage or racing history behind it and just due to age and relatively recent introduction to the automotive world it never will. A Tag/Omega/Rolex keeps amazing time and it a work of art. A Casio might keep better time and costs significantly less, but it will never be a Rolex. I'm not trying to start a war here, just saying the 911 is and will always be a 911 regardless of something else being faster (you can build a $5,000 Civic to be faster than many 911s). There is a lot more to an automotive experience than just speed and this statement also applies to how different yet equally wonderful a Cayman/Boxster is. Fun video and I hope you all enjoyed your drive!

    • @K1dPhresh1
      @K1dPhresh1 4 года назад +1

      I have to agree. Cayman’s are probably the ideal car, but I’d only buy one in addition to a 911, because 911.

      It's only the notion of history and tradition (read: snobbery) that keeps people buying 911s. The caymans are almost always better drivers cars. Porsche themselves knew how much they nailed it with the Cayman, hence they underpowered it for so long

    I have a 997.1 stick C2 with 39k on the clock. Does the 991 have the save visceral feel of the 997.1?
    I drove a 2017 991 C2 stick and it felt less of a 911 than my 997.1 than I expected. The 997 felt more raw, pure 911. The sounds your 991 are great though.
    P.S. Love the blue wrap. How much did you pay for your 991? Enjoy the quarantine. We are on lockdown in South Florida.

    • @AutoAmateur
      @AutoAmateur  4 года назад

      Hey J! Thanks for the email by the way. The 991 still feels and drives like a 911, but like each generation of 911 the driving experience is slightly different. The 991 feels more responsive and powerful (and comfortable!) but the 997 gave me a better feel for the road, especially the back end. I always knew exactly what the back end of was doing in the 997. In the 991 I worry that it’s going to get away from me a little at times.

Power to weight ratio is everything. Wait IIRC last time you dyno your car and it yield 285hp? I joke but would love to race you in my 997.2 with the same engine as yours.
