    Well, in AIT, the focus was more on learning a skill set. We did morning PT, showered, had chow then off to training. The drill seargeants were more like baby sitters and didn't harass all that much.

    Intelligence School at Fort Huachuca in 1985 was actually a good time. Drinking age was 18 and there was a bar (the Cactus Canteen) about 50 yards from Riley Barracks. Hardest part was staying awake in class, especially when you were hungover. Barracks were co-ed too, good times. My son is heading there next summer, apparently it is a lot more strict than back when it was known as "Fort Resort." Poor kid :)

      Well, things are changing, but AIT or a Navy "A" school that has women comes with a whole different set of pluses and minuses..... I know at Ft Sam the weekends are like orgies. Many go off base, get a hotel and blow off some steam etc.....there is a lot of studying of human anatomy and physiology going on, using the Braille method

    Ait just study and study. Depends on mos, but study or if you fail your exams or test you'll be in trouble. Reclassed or recycled. My AIT in Ft. Lee wasn't really easier. We had PT twice a day because our DI was a jerk. He made us do pushups in tall weeds and on rocky asphalt in the morning etc. and battle buddy exercises after class inside. We also didn't get privleges until after longer periods of time and new groups with the other DI got them pretty much right away. The other DI's hated our DI the head one, and so treated us bad as well. One tried to run us off the road with a bus. We had to march to and from mess hall all together for a month. We got marched back and forth a few times because of power tripping. We had to scrub the floors with spatulas the first night and were told not to go to sleep and stay up cleaning all night. We were on lock down most of the time. It sucked worse than BASIC

    One of the biggest secrets, not that anybody's trying to keep it that way, of Army IET training (that's your BCT and AIT) is the "hold-over" and "hold-under" time. Now this doesn't happen to everybody, and when it does it's usually not for long, but when you go from BCT to AIT you might not get into class right away. Just like in BCT you have reception to in-process you, at AIT you will be placed into a class with other's in your MOS that also just arrived from BCT. Well, at least that's the plan. There has to be enough of you to form a class and there also has to be an available instructor to teach it. Even though this was scheduled before you even left MEPS, there could be a snag or two in this. If you are in an MOS that few people choose, you might get there and there's only two others in your MOS. There not going to create a class for 3 soldiers. So a week goes by and another bus pulls in with a load of fresh meat from BCT. You anxiously ask them "What's your MOS? What's your MOS?" as they file off the bus. You are hoping to get enough of them to warrant the creation of a new class so you can start your training. You might wait a few weeks, or even longer. That's what we call a "Hold Under".
    During this time you are going to be working on some details around base or KP at the D-FAC. There is also CQ (I don't remember what that stands for) Duty. This is the easiest but most boring duty you will likely do. It's essentially a cross between a doorman, a sentry, and a receptionist, mostly that last one. You answer the phone, announce "Attention!" and "At Ease!" when staff enter the bldg., and possibly maintain a log book of these events. Unless you get tasked with that or KP you will go to the S-shop and wait to get selected by some Sgt. to accompany him/her on garbage police detail, or something similar. That one was my favorite, actually. You are essentially doing these duties while the rest of your platoon is in school. Then you return for dinner and evening formations. You still have those few hours to yourself in the evening. Now because your essentially on probation you won't be leaving post or possibly not even going far from the company area. There might be a few places you are allowed to go on post nearby such as the gym, church, maybe the movie theater on post. Usually if your not in school you can't have a GPA so you can't qualify for a higher pass status. However typically your pass status qualifiers includes time there at that unit. So if you have been there long enough you might still qualify to advance to higher privileges. This may sound disappointing but just coming off of BCT you will still feel very free during this time, especially if you didn't do basic at Jackson ;). Even if you do get into class right away, you still have those time in and other qualifiers to meet to advance your pass status. When I was in, your GPA, PFT scores, and General Soldiering were considered to determine what pass status you qualified for, as well as meeting the time line requirements.
    Now a "Hold Over" is similar but this is when you have just completed training and have to wait for some reason to move on. My first exposure to this was in BCT. We had a room in our barracks with two graduates that were waiting for classes to be available for their AIT's. At least that was the rumor. Instead of shipping them there and making them "Hold-Unders" they were waiting it out there. Sucked to be them. We were told to stay out of their room and don't bother them. They were free to come and go and we almost never saw them. They were like MIB to us, very mysterious. When I was in AIT we had a hold under platoon and when you got a class assignment you were moved to another platoon. Then we had a hold over platoon. These were mostly people waiting for a medical discharge to come through or something else that was keeping them in limbo. They didn't have a unit calling for them and they were not free to just go home. They were still property of that company until new orders. Not happy times for them.
    In my opinion, this is an advantage to being a Guard or Reserve soldier. They have a unit they have been promised to, actually assigned to, once they graduate. If their expected date of graduation comes and goes someone from that unit is going to be calling looking for their new soldier and wanting to know "what's the hold up?". If you are Active Duty, you belong to that training unit until you get orders for your first duty station to come through shortly before graduation. So if something happens where you can't or won't get orders assigning you somewhere, nobody even knows you exist. Not saying don't go Active, but maybe go Guard or Reserve, then either go AGR later or cross over to Active after returning from AIT.

      Shipping to Fort Jackson on August for BCT; then to Fort Meade, Maryland for my AIT as a 46S!

    • @WhoWouldWantThisName
      @WhoWouldWantThisName 4 года назад +1

      @@kronosg.3515 Well I can't really say anything regarding Meade as I've never been there, nor to Jackson but Jackson has a certain rep, shall we say. I knew some really good troops that went there but from what I could tell most of the BCT units there were really soft, hence the nick name "Relaxin' Jackson". Most recruits do go there but I went to Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., then on to Ft. Eustis, VA for AIT. Jackson in August is going to be miserably hot, that I know. It's all good though because you don't want an easy ride right? I mean we all want to know we earned our way to wherever we end up. Military life is all about challenge and the more you endure the more you know you can take. The tougher you are mentally the easier everything is that life throws at you.
      My advice on everything you do in your career is to push yourself to be the best you can at it. It is so true that you really do get out of it what you put into it. This may sound like a recruitment brochure but I assure you that just like your standards for passing an APFT only get tougher, so does everything else. As you move up in rank or gain more experience more will be expected of you. In various schools and units the basic standards are not acceptable. They can and often do raise the bar. For example just like you may need a higher APFT percentage for a certain pass status in AIT, likewise you may get to a unit and find you have to maintain an even higher score there. Some units use the max as their minimums, such as in SOF. Many combat arms units have that same standard as well. That's just an example the same is true for other areas of your career. The APFT just makes for an easy example to offer.
      Best of luck with everything. Just maintain a positive attitude and focus on being a good team player, because getting along with those you live with is a huge part of it, and you will have some great memories from it all. I still remember it fondly and civilians make me miss the life fairly regularly. :)

    I was in OSUT so I had the same drills. We were treated exactly the same as in basic except we were called 'soldiers' instead of 'recruits'. We still had KP duty much to our disappointment. However during KP our drills would let us have cookies or pizzas the cooks offered us. We also felt like we were free when at one training area our drills let us fall out to eat lunch at the mess hall completely on our own. (We could even get dessert and ice cream!) The other thing (and a big one for us) was while we did march in the morning to whatever training area we got to ride back in a cattle truck when finished. Sometimes we'd get done with training at 1300 and we got the privilege of spending it locked in our barracks in the sweltering Missouri summer heat. However, by this time our drills left us alone until chow instead of randomly tormenting us. We started having floor buffer rodeos for entertainment.

    OMG. The AIT students are so deprived, than we were, in 1976. I was a 63H, an Automotive Repairman. The longest, hardest, most comprehensive mechanic course the Army had. Now discontinued, replaced by Boeing contractors, because they pay politicians on both sides of the aisle...Anyway. We stayed in WWII wooden barracks 50 to a floor, with 25 bunk beds. we got up at 6, did personal hygiene, cleaned the barracks, went to breakfast, and were at classes by 8. Did lunch from noon to 1, back to class until 4, which was when we did PT. After that, you were completely free, until 6AM again. And the same thing from Friday until Monday morning. You were allowed your own clothes, electronics, such as they were in the '70's But what totally blew my mind was our arrival speech. "All of you are mechanics now. Your test scores have proven that. You are here to get familiar with our equipment. So pay attention, OK?

      back in 1976 .I took AIT for radio teletype (rtt operator) I know its now changed to another MOS but my time At Fort Gordon at AIT was very relaxed. No Drill Sergeants and we were allowed off post! I am glad I served when I did! After Graduating AIT went to Europe for 2.5 Years helping to guard the Fulda Gap in 5th corps. Lance Missile unit! I'm in the start of week 4 of 68W AIT at Fort Sam Huston, TX and what you described about a typical day is exactly what we do. We start pt at 4:50, breakfast at 7:00, school from 8:30 to 12:15, lunch from 12:15 to 13:30, more class from 13:30 to 17:00, and then dinner at 17:30. After that, we just go back and have mail and then we get to relax until final formation at 20:30. It's a lot more relaxed then basic

    Intelligence school at Ft Devens, Mass in the 90s. The company had 8 platoons. You start in a platoon/barracks that is pretty strict. Drill sgt is kind of a dick like in basic. You have daily PT and formation, go to class all day, and come home. You can go around the base and do what you want during downtime. As you progress, you move into other platoons with easier drill sgt's and more privileges. By the time you get to platoon 7 or 8, you can start wearing civies, go off post on weekends, have your own personal car, etc.
    So you basically had guys at all different stages of training rotating through the program at the same time. You typically hang out with guys at your level of the program, but you can make friends with other guys at different stages in the course as well. Plus it was a joint service training base, so you would have classes and make friends with marines, air force, and navy folks that are training in the same MOS as you. But they all bunked in their own separate units.
    The drill sgts were in charge when you were at the barracks. But you had separate instructors for classes (again could be marines or air force or navy instructors teaching you). Was a nice experience.

    • @MattWard89
      @MattWard89  6 лет назад +14

      It depends on when and where you go. Right now there are a lot of holidays in the Fall/Winter so just about every month there is a 4 day weekend in which if you are allowed to go off post you could go home. If you are at AIT where they won't let you leave until you have been there for a while (10 weeks in my case) then you could out of luck and have maybe just one four day weekend for the rest of your time. But yeah I agree, being in a relationship just makes the military that much harder.

    • @tidefanyankee2428
      @tidefanyankee2428 6 лет назад +12

      Wolfs Winter. The divorce rate is higher than 40%, the national average is around 50% and the military has a higher rate than the civilian population. But I second what you're saying about NOT getting married until things shake out and you find out where you'll be and what you'll be doing.
      Spawn and Batman. Here's how it normally goes. You and your new wife are from Pig's Knuckle Arkansas or Elk's Tooth Montana, you're high school sweethearts but you get stationed at Ft Bragg, or Ft Hood but no where close to where you're from. The rent is high, and you won't be making much money. The Soldier, Sailor, Marine or Airman gets deployed. Now that pretty young wife is in a city where she knows no one. Oh the "wive's club" or "family support group" you say? Yeah, those women have been around the block and know the best spots to hook up with civilians or service men. They (the veteran wives) know all the rules and regulations and how to manipulate them to their advantage. Piss her off and she'll call your 1st Sgt. And trust me, a crying woman whether she is making sense or is being unreasonable can get pretty much what ever she wants. The 1st Sgt doesn't have time for that so he tells you to simply do what she wants. And you DO NOT want to piss off the 1st Sgt. Those veteran wives will take your wife out for a "girl's night" and there will be drinking and dancing etc.... It is the rare, very rare wife, and especially a young pretty one that won't enjoy that male attention that she WILL get at the club, bar etc..... Those older, veteran wives will be telling her stories about how you are probably banging some "buy me drinky girl" in Korea etc.... Your young pretty wife won't listen.....at first. But let you not call one day when she expects it and she will picture you out getting laid. Oh, and if you are the only guy she's ever been with, she might feel cheated, and what to experience something "different", because now she just KNOWS you're out getting laid because you didn't call when you said you would. Never mind that you had to take the duty for some guy who got sick or any other number of reasons.
      Oh, and DO NOT even try to say, "Oh I know her, she's not like that" OR "that's not going to happen to us". Do you actually believe that any....ANY serviceman goes into a marriage thinking his wife (who loves him) would cheat???? Tell me you don't believe that. EVERY guy, and gal tells themselves that THEIR spouse wouldn't even consider that, no matter what. Here's the deal, everyone has needs......emotional, spiritual and physical. People will find a way to scratch that itch, and women get itches just like guys to and what's more.....women generally speaking, can get laid MUCH easier than a guy can......the mating call of a female family member at a military club is "I'm SO drunk". And like a moth to a flame or flies on shit there will be someone there to give her attention and you know....she's SO lonely......and she just needs to feel that big, strong, fit guy up against her. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT say it can't happen to you, because it's happened to many, Many, MANY guys. I saw it first hand. I saw it happen to guys I served with which is why I stayed single. And don't even get me started if their are kids in the mix. If you are deployed, you're going to be living on next to nothing while she is at home paying the bills. If you get base housing, it can be even worse because now.....she is surrounded by young, strong, extremely physically fit guys.....just like you. It's like a buffet for some women.
      Stay single.......OR go into it with your eyes wide open to what could happen. But don't be naive......
