my favourite civ videos are ibxtoycat’s experiments with different political ideas, they’re very interesting and a precursor to the whole civ events that wasn’t mentioned here
I don't think he had any actual direct influence on the rise of Civilization videos, but I want to throw in an honorable mention of ibxtoycat. His "Realm Experiment" videos were kind of a prototype version of these civ events, and he did them years before MagicGum started the ball rolling with this trend. A somewhat interesting anecdote, I've been supremely interested in this genre/concept for over a decade. I always had big ideas about it, but being a random nobody, I obviously didn't have the resources to make anything happen myself. That's how I found ibxtoycat's videos, and also how I found Ish's first civilization video. Like a month or so after Ish posted his first civ video, right as it was just starting to catch on but still only had a handful thousand views, I actually found it by specifically searching for a Minecraft civilization video, when the genre didn't even really exist yet.
@kringle7804 That's worth noting, although to my mind, it's a bit too different from the premise of civilization experiments/events. The key features of civ events to me are the fact that they don't have any kind of land claiming plugins, and the fact that they're hardcore, where everyone only has one life. Those are the major distinctions that make a civ event unique and give it the actual civilization feel. Stoneworks is much more so just a regular old survival multiplayer server with a roleplay focus, and those kinds of things have been around for much longer than civ events.
Nice video man this was dope to see the progression of civ events!! I've played in so many of these and I can't believe you even mentioned Trapped SMP that was so long ago and only lasted for a few weeks XDD! GREAT VIDEOOOO

Thank you for making this video. I was curious to see what the history behind this somewhat shortlived trend was. I keep coming back to these videos like once a year. Honestly I keep rewatching Ish's videos the most. The storytelling and cinematography are great and I keep wondering when another one is coming out. But man, I didn't consider that a lot of Ish's repeat participants are friends, but it makes sense. Not that I view that as rigging the experiment really, but in a way it is kind of necessary, especially if you have 1000 people and most of them would either do their own thing or troll relentlessly unless shown something interesting they could do instead. I know these are a lot of work to do, but I kind of hope they keep happening in some form or another. The storyline of Ish's previous civilization experiment was massive enough that some other participants felt compelled to tell their own perspectives and as someone in one of those videos said, this is exactly how civilizations, history, oral traditions form. Like if Ish ever does another one, I have an expectation that there will be a Sultanate at the very least and there will always be individuals that seek to obtain power by any means.
great vid dawg, I kinda just forgot about this trend until recently, made me want to participate one but…. Well since it’s (mostly) dead none are active. I assume it got stale, a few channels still do it but they take like months to post, I doubt these videos will shine again, still entertaining though
I remember way before this i had a similar idea of people doing civilization videos of minecraft but got immediatley annoyed when there was nothing like that in RUclips then like 5 months later it was everywhere
Before 100k subs club, hell yeah! I think your content is actually really unique in the way you show it. No one else really has these eye catching thumbnails, or cool cutaways, or even humor. I think you got 500k in the bag, keep going man, you got this.
I feel like I should mention IHasName. He's another youtuber who's videos mostly focus on the Origins mod. If you don't know, the Origins mod allows you pick from one of nine backstories, or "origins," which grant you various abilities and debuffs depending on what you pick. His three most recent videos follow the civilization format, with two of them utilizing the Origins mod.
I just stumbled across Civilisation videos yesterday with a video from Ish. Now I’m diving deep into the entire civilisation community and I love every second! Only few videos Menage to keep me that occupied with eyes on the screen constantly.
Where does stoneworks fit into this 🤔 Also, great video! Been a fan of Magic's since a bit before the first Trapped SMP launched and man, there was a lot of politics and spying just in discord before any minecraft event even started. Wish there was a video just on the discord politics lol. Never expected Magic to blow up this big and I'm really proud of him!
@AmeDayo stoneworks inspired magic a little, it was too rule ridden to be a true social experiment however and didn't allow for thoughts experiments to properly evolve
The discord politics were fun, I wish we got a second server so I can put everything I did into effect. Back when we thought there was a high possibility for a second server, me and Alu set up an information gathering network, 2-3 puppet factions and alt accounts to control them, even the ones that had a democratic focus. And then nothing happened, but hey, details.
Ive met SO many amazing people in this community. I'm just a mere event artist like i make ALOT ALOT of art from these events that i myself have played or watched people play. But ever since i joined this community ive been happier as a person and even improved my artstyle by 10x more. My adrenaline absolutely SPIKES thru the roof during these events when i play myself. And while i hate it i also weirdly love it. Because it gives u a new view of things. Despite meeting so many great people in this community it also comes with down sides. Some creators within it can be Rude or fake asf once u get to know them. Or just blind at the fact their viewers are literal children. It truely amazes me to see how far magic gum has come and many other youtubers in this community. I truely appreciate all their hard work and dedication they bring into these events. And the communities they build around their content
This is a genuinely really well put-together video essay I do have to say ive always been bothered by how later videos are no longer really experiments, since they force players down specific paths and events, instead of letting them create the situations
When I saw this, I was like 'Well this should be interesting, being that one of my favorite videos of all time (Trust Ive watched this many times) is ish's 1000 Player Experiment.' and being that you mentioned him, that just made me happy.
Amazing video my guy! Honestly such a great documentary about the history of the civ genre for minecraft in general. And while I agree ish is the last of the main 3 making the civilization genre who knows where even he'll take his channel after his next video lol He could continue with civilization events or move on with different ones but that's just my take being part of the community as well lol.
I can't believe that I was one of the before 10K people. At least i think, I watched so many of your videos and you're doing great! Keep the good work up!❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
There's this other Minecraft civilization community that quite underrated deserves to be mentioned Stoneworks Organized cities Actual politics Wars with well planned tactics Even religion Having 10,000 wiki pages of server history, in the last 4 REAL LIFE YEARS. It's insane It may be what MagicGum has been trying to replicate. Actually civilizations in Minecraft that act and function like a real nation. I genuinely wonder if he knows about it. He would probably love it Its not just 4 islands with different biomes. (Which they actually made fun of lol) But an actual map with its own geography, each state, kingdom, empire having their own respective land and their own respective borders. The scale itself far massive than any civilization event anyone has ever made even combined. The thing is tho, they're not that we'll known despite the rise of Minecraft civilization. Unlike events that are filmed LIVE, various people having their own POVs and their own recorded footage, admins watching everything 24/7, in stoneworks, they do actual documents which is not as exciting. They also seem to limit their players more on creative freedom. They can still build great structures in their respective land and all but seem to take things more "seriously" in a sense. I personally don't know how it works since I don't know that much and only recently discovered them, but I think there's more restrictions that force players to socialize and work together, which makes sense to prevent divide and solo players causing havoc. I honestly think you should cover a video about them. They kinda deserve it, as well as asking them how things work unlike in regular Minecraft civilization people can immediately be stacked as hell if put enough effort. Hope you see this
As someone who plays on the server, people can do pretty much whatever they want (unless it's against the rules which aren't too restrictive, mostly about cheating and toxicity). There's nothing stopping me from making the town hall a dirt hut. Some groups also have varying degrees of freedoms. Some are more strict, while other let people do what they want as long as they contribute. People could run off and set up a claim(a territory which costs 10k), but most eventually get gobbled up by bigger groups if they don't get enough support. It's more competition that does that, because what nation would you rather join? A nation made up of dirt huts or a nation with amazing builds? Most would join the latter so those would survive while the former would collapse. Also eventually a builder would come along and fix things up.
I think it’s def sad that it ended so quickly but as he said it’s hard to add anything. I think the whole thing was a great experiment and I personally enjoyed it very much. I do really wish there was more to add but there doesn’t seem to be. Thank you MagicGum for the amazing video.
This video isn’t fully correct (as far as I know) SpokeisHere actually uploaded a civilization video months prior to MagicGum. (Spoke: APR. 30TH. 2021) (MGum: AUG. 9TH. 2021). However while spoke (as far as I know) made the genre, MagicGum was the one who really pushed it and made it as popular as it is. So I’d say both deserve partial credit in their own categories. (I will note that Magic didn’t make his video because of Spoke, he just uploaded after Spoke making it the “first” irrelevant.)
It did start years ago. In the Netherlands our youth (when I was like 6/7) There where a series of A called Minecraft civilization. it's called: "The Kingdom Dusdavid"
@@skyboimc Yes Spoke's original video on it was made over 3 years ago while magicgums was 2 years ago. Spoke's allowed people to team with whoever they wanted and elect team leaders and the videos had everyone in one specific biome
@@royalistproductions The reason nobody talks about Spoke's videos is because they had nothing to do with the heavy wave of civilization videos. As someone who watched and even participated in his events, they were structured very differently from MagicGum, Ish, SpeedSilver, and even Sword. Spoke's events had no influence outside of his channel really and the civilization video surge only popped up because of MagicGum's vid which is why they all incorporate elements of his original vid and none from Spoke's.
@@CoolPotatoBuilds parkour civilization isn't an actual civilization video. It's basically just a battle shonen made by a guy who's cracked at Minecraft parkour
Fantastic lil history video. I got really into MindOfNeo's event videos for the plotlines and interesting custom mods, but the format and hashtags definitely baffled me since those events were less of a civilization and more of a battle royale. Now i know what sprung up my new favorite video genre 😂
The original trio that catalyzed this form of content was a god send, unlike much of the copycat videos by other creators, they tend to have twists, unrealistic mods, or a focus on gameplay, while channels like ish and magic focused more on player interaction and specifically story telling. Thats what makes these videos so enticing, I enjoy the simplistic aspect of it all, just civilizations making their way with each other, no other dimension, or superpowers, or lucky blocks. My most recent watch was from RyanNotBrian’s “100 player try to survive the dweller in hardcore minecraft” while I didn’t like the aspect of a creature being included, the story telling kept me invested throughout the entire almost 2 hour video. I hope Ish continues making this content because if he can master it, he can be minecraft’s equivalent to rust’s stevie.
I'm definitely late to the civilization video trend. I only got into it a few days ago, who knew it had been going on for two years now and is starting to die. Some of the civilization videos are really interesting, the stories are amazing and filled with lore. They definitely blew up on Minecraft RUclips for a bit, I wonder which trend will be next! :D

Like a month or so after Ish posted his first civ video, right as it was just starting to catch on but still only had a handful thousand views, I actually found it by specifically searching for a Minecraft civilization video, when the genre didn't even really exist yet.
same here. rtgames earth server also had slightly similar vibes imo
ill also add stoneworks made the Rathnir sever about a year before magic gum
Last time you gave a date I swear almost every person in the SpeedSilver Discord started saying the next video was then, actually kinda funny now that I think of it! *but i saw in skybois video it was gonna be then-* anyways! lovely video :D

3:06 of course it would work Australia is hell on earth
great vid dawg, I kinda just forgot about this trend until recently, made me want to participate one but…. Well since it’s (mostly) dead none are active. I assume it got stale, a few channels still do it but they take like months to post, I doubt these videos will shine again, still entertaining though

I used to play in his server a lot with his origin evolution mod and he deleted the server or make a races server that never came to fruition
I just stumbled across Civilisation videos yesterday with a video from Ish. Now I’m diving deep into the entire civilisation community and I love every second! Only few videos Menage to keep me that occupied with eyes on the screen constantly.
Where does stoneworks fit into this 🤔
Also, great video!
This is a genuinely really well put-together video essay
I do have to say ive always been bothered by how later videos are no longer really experiments, since they force players down specific paths and events, instead of letting them create the situations
NO ONE jumps for the beef
When I saw this, I was like 'Well this should be interesting, being that one of my favorite videos of all time (Trust Ive watched this many times) is ish's 1000 Player Experiment.' and being that you mentioned him, that just made me happy.
I absolutely love how SkyBoi insults JetStarFish meanwhile hes in the credits for voicing Ish 😂

There's this other Minecraft civilization community that quite underrated deserves to be mentioned
Stoneworks
Organized cities
Actual politics
Wars with well planned tactics
Even religion
Having 10,000 wiki pages of server history, in the last 4 REAL LIFE YEARS. It's insane
It may be what MagicGum has been trying to replicate. Actually civilizations in Minecraft that act and function like a real nation. I genuinely wonder if he knows about it. He would probably love it
Its not just 4 islands with different biomes.
Hope you see this
Is it in a Playlist on their channel?
YOOOOOO STONE WORKS seriusly know one knows it exists come on

I think it’s def sad that it ended so quickly but as he said it’s hard to add anything. I think the whole thing was a great experiment and I personally enjoyed it very much. I do really wish there was more to add but there doesn’t seem to be. Thank you MagicGum for the amazing video.
5:40 IS THAT DIV_Y NO WAY
As someone from australia i agree
This video isn’t fully correct (as far as I know) SpokeisHere actually uploaded a civilization video months prior to MagicGum. (Spoke: APR. 30TH. 2021) (MGum: AUG. 9TH. 2021). However while spoke (as far as I know) made the genre, MagicGum was the one who really pushed it and made it as popular as it is. So I’d say both deserve partial credit in their own categories.
(I will note that Magic didn’t make his video because of Spoke, he just uploaded after Spoke making it the “first” irrelevant.)

Something that should be mentioned is thats spokes civilization videos predate magicgums.
really??
@@skyboimc Yes Spoke's original video on it was made over 3 years ago while magicgums was 2 years ago. Spoke's allowed people to team with whoever they wanted and elect team leaders and the videos had everyone in one specific biome
@@mars48379 it appears spoke's video was like 4 months before??? thats wild. thank you for telling me
Yea spoke predated him, but nobody ever talks about him
@@royalistproductions The reason nobody talks about Spoke's videos is because they had nothing to do with the heavy wave of civilization videos.

I can save the civilization genre of Minecraft videos
you got this
The original trio that catalyzed this form of content was a god send, unlike much of the copycat videos by other creators, they tend to have twists, unrealistic mods, or a focus on gameplay, while channels like ish and magic focused more on player interaction and specifically story telling.
