Looks great! Definitely add drainage to the base of both walls and at least part way up them. That way the water can drain away which will take away a lot of weight that that wall has to retain.

Wall is a little lightweight for the retained height. Drainage weep holes and backfill lower level with a 20mm single size stone, with a well graded stone above would reduce the earrh pressure. The stone backfill should ideally be a 60 degree wedge.
Brick-laying is a long, arduous, magical journey. One of the best things about the music block getting built at my school was watching the whole process, from foundation-laying and piping, through to the brick-laying and insulation installing. Also: YAY to putting an actual pipe casing around the gas hose! 😂 Why was that not done before??? Just also really happy that your neighbours are also fans. It must have been nice for them to know that a beloved old house would be getting a modern facelift (among all the other work!)
I previously had a bill between £700-£800 for going through a gas pipe but after arguing my case it was installed at the incorrect depth I was let off. Great video again 👍🏻
@ also there was no warning tape installed above the pipe to show the pipe was running where I was digging. Luckily I had evidence to support my argument.
When Harry started mucking around the gas pipe, I got all excited for a Nicky The Brickie return, only to have those hopes dashed when you started dropping concrete. AND THEN you come back with an 11th hour triumphant return of NTB!!! Day. Made. Solid work 🙌🏻 also spotted Kieran & Alice there! 👀 Me & my husband changed our sink drainer this week ourselves instead of calling a plumber cos you inspire us to DIY (only a small job but still!) 🤣
I’ve just had a retaining wall it’s not holding back no where near as much earth as yours, my builders didn’t put any weep holes in so I shall have to excavate again and get some installed. My retainer is concrete block laid horizontal tied in with brick I’m not sure that wall will be strong enough
Omg guys we are itching to do a house build but not quite done with the travel just yet aha i recon that gas leak to be fixed your talking 600 to 800 pound but who knows ahaha :)
18:13 where are your drain pipes and what ties the “free standing wall” to the hill behind it? I’m not sure what those important connectors are, but that wall will come down with being tied into the dirt hill. Sure don’t want all that work and expense to be lost. You guys are awesome and such hard workers.
Hi bud, the wall is tied to the foundations with thick steel re-bar, and is reinforced throughout, which will stop any movement. We have literally just finished the drainage in the last couple days- so that’s in next weeeks ep 👍🏻
Really loving this series guys. We look forward to watching every Sunday! Just out of curiosity, did you get the retaining wall designed based on potential loads? It really looks very light for the pressures that will be generated from earth and vehicles.
Hi David, we’re really glad you’re enjoying watching along! We got advice from 2 different builders and then went overkill with Rebar into foundations, Hollow blocks filled with concrete and lots of drainage (which we speak about in next weeks ep). 👍🏻
Not meant as a criticism at all - I’m completely clueless but I’m so surprised that wall will withhold the weight and pressure from the cars and soil etc. impressive work. I can see why you’ve prioritised that area of the property.
@@NickyandHarrijust wondering if you've had an engineer design the wall properly? Only garden walls with no vehicle loading tend to be possible with a single skin of blocks up to a maximum height of 1.2 metres as you have constructed (props to you both for giving it a crack btw). Your wall looks to be 1.8m? Might otherwise find your wall starts leaning and failing. It does look rather slender for the height!
Most of the weight of cars and soil, being subject to gravity, is directly downwards- not out towards the wall. So, a lot of the weight is supported by the ground beneath the parking area, not the retaining wall.
I’m annoyed for you about the brick layer. Surely they shouldn’t have made that commitment to you if they knew it was their granddaughters birthday? Hope you treat yourself with the money you saved on his day rate 🎉😂
I hope the gas repair won't be too bad, but personally I would expect a bill of £500-800, emergency repairs won't be cheap. I know it is a bit late, but well worth looking into groundworkers insurance the next time you plan something similar. When digging deep into our garden we hired a digger and operator and I think the premium was something like £32 for a one off month.
