Here's my very first Boardwalk Empire video, specifically one for the best character ever, Richard Harrow. I know I'm really late to the party, but I finished this show a few months ago, back in the beginning of February, and fell in love with it and all of the characters. I'm just finishing my re-watch of the show and I wanted to make a Richard video first. Richard's story was the most heartbreaking to me.
I really wanted to focus mainly on Richard's struggle to accept and love himself, and how hopeless he felt. But then he meets Julia, a really pretty girl who accepts and loves him for who he is and he instantly falls in love with her, and kinda pulls him out of his shell. Their relationship on screen was so adorable. Just seeing him stare at her sometimes when she's not looking melts my heart. I only wished there were more scenes with them. They're literally so perfect for each other. I'm devastated that he didn't get to spend the rest of his life with her, raising Tommy. God, I really wanted him to end up happy. It's rare when a show leaves such a huge hole in my heart... but this show did. Damn it.
I highly recommend Boardwalk Empire. It's one of my favorites, now, I love it so much. It might not be a show for everyone, but if anyone has similar tastes to me, then you'll probably like it. So go ahead and give it a try.
These character study videos are always so fun to make, but they can also be really challenging. I put a lot of my passion and thoughts into this one. I'm really proud with how this turned out.

This edit just made me realize that when Richard was bleeding out and knew he was going to die, he hurried to the spot under the boardwalk where he and Julia shared their first kiss... :(

As a veteran who has come so... so close to suicide, I've never felt more attached to a character in television than Richard Harrow. I had to pause the show during the scene where the woodsman tells him to live.

The only character in the show that tried to become more human. Unlike everybody around him.
They should have created a show based on this character. This character had true depth.
I just read about Anna Coleman Ladd. She was a sculptor who turned to making very, very good masks for WW I soldiers with badly mutilated faces, and there were thousands of them. The scars Richard Harrow has are actually on the less disturbing side compared to what some of them had to deal with. As one doctor working with those patients put it: "Only the blind keep their spirits up."
Just read about her as well! What an amazing woman I’m ashamed to have never heard of until now. God bless her for helping these poor boys feel less alone and for showing them kindness.
Richard Harrow epitomises the importance of finding people that accept you for who you are, no matter what you have faced or how you appear to the world. That's the thought that has kept this character in my mind ever since I first watched the show years ago.
Easily my favorite TV character in recent history. The final season without him wasn't worth watching.

I LOVE the character of Richard. I was almost physically sick when he died.
Totally agree. We just stood there and barely talked after the credits rolled. Was without question my favorite character in the entire series.
He didn't die - he transcended. Like Jimmy, most of Richard (and the veterans they represent) died in the trenches long before he "came back". His character arch/redemption was completed and he got to be with Julia in eternal peace.

Richard Harrow and Jimmy Darmody become friends through their mutual understanding of the horrors of war. It is never verbalized but well understood none the less. The entirety of "Boardwalk Empire" is a masterpiece.
I don't know English well, but many people missed an important detail in the film. Richard apparently had some kind of illness due to a head injury, this is shown in one of the episodes of the film, where he was sitting with his sister. His left hand stopped listening to him, which is why he had trouble shooting in the end.
Richard was troubled, but he was trying his best. That's why I loved his character, his struggle was real.
man this dude was probably one of the best written characters in the history of all shows, brutality was he most feared by most yet the most humane character in boardwalk empire. Simply a masterpeice and beautifully written character i wish he was still alive

I cannot lie… I am at the beginning of season 4, I know how it’s going to end for Richard Harrow. When I watched this, I wept. The character was so well played and well written. I truly do not believe anyone else could’ve played this character better than Jack Huston.
This compilation brought me to tears. Goddam Harrow, one of televisions best written characters ever!
So many men came back broken physically and mentally after that terrible war. And they suffered in silence. God bless them.

I just got to watching this show recently, and I've got to say, Richard Harrow has got to be one of the greatest TV show characters, truly unforgettable.
I don't know what else to say other than I cried when Richard died. Unfortunately, that is something I find hard to do, especially with fiction, but I'm getting better, and Richard was like a friend to me. 😢
Oh, how I wanted for Richard to live a normal life :( Such a great character... He shouldn't have gone to that last job...

Absolute best character on the show. We all loved Chalky and Jimmy but fuck. He killed the role.
I agree but not enough credit goes to the actor who played ELI. He was not as likable as Richard but his acting was a tour de force. Every time these two were on the screen I was glued to the set.
He is literally me (minus the part where he gets a wholesome family and human connection)

It’s been soooo long since I’ve seen Boardwalk Empire. Richard was always my favorite character!
Quiet, lover of his friends, his family, a hopeless romantic who hid a man who killed only when necessary, but who was the best at shooting, one of the soldiers with the best record as a sniper and a ruthless vigilante.
And deeply traumatised, not only by the war and his disfigurement, but the hellish notion that he'll never be loved. For a man clearly capable of pure and sincere love, that's a killer.
Quite an amazing character for me personally.

A very touching tribute. Richard longed for more, but he knew because of the cards he had been dealt that his dreams would never come true. At least for a fleeting moment he found love and acceptance with Julia.
I was stunned when I saw the notification for this, Its been a long while since I've gotten this excited over an edit. Oh my god I definitely chose the right time to watch this show, because it makes a video like this feel like the topper that I needed for it. It's the closure that I wanted after the way Richard's story ended, you really showed the beauty of it with this. And I LOVE the parts you used with Richard and Julia, their relationship was definitely one of my favorite parts of the show.
Beautiful work, every scene and quote were well chosen and fit flawlessly with the song, and the coloring is so perfect, I can't even imagine the amount of work that went into creating this!

I haven't watched this show and not familiar with the character, but I was so moved by this video. They way you edit his story gave me a glimpse on who he is. Made me very interested on looking into this show!
He’s one of the most unique characters I’ve seen in television, oh my. I’m really glad my video could give you insight on who he is (I’m very sorry for the spoilers though) I cannot recommend the show enough, so if you get the chance to, definitely consider checking it out! I’m sure you will love this character right away. :)
I watched the entire series in about a week. That's how good it was. I had no interest in watching it because I didn't think that Steve Buccini would have been able to pull off that type of character. I definitely learned another life lessons about judging. He was great. But Richard stole the show
Jack Huston's performance arc spanned the whole spectrum and was utterly believable. The irony for me is that if you described in words what his character would do, you'd probably scoff at it, like, "No way, bro. I wouldn't buy it." But there it is, fortunately enshrined for all to see and marvel at.

Boardwalk Empire will always be my fav tv show. Richard was not a perfect person but he was a genuine person that found meaning in his life, he crawled out of his pit and sadly he died due to his ruthless talents.

Richard's death was the saddest moment of BE period, on the other hand with his death Richard has finally found a peace or maybe it was the peace that has finally come to him?

Just finished watching Boardwalk Empire for the 1st time. Richard Harrow didn't hate. Sadly, Teddy lost his way after Richard died, and his grandmother poisoned his mind. I wonder how Teddy would have turned out if Richard had lived. Gentle tortured soul, but the skill set of a killer when needed. Best character in Boardwalk.

I still can't believe I had no idea this was a song by Michael Malarkey despite my obsession with him.
Its been so long since I've even thought of Richard, let alone recollect on his story and character. Then BAM you show up and remind me how much I adore him and this show, and all those nights I watched him.
Its surprising to say the least, but thank you for helping me remember.

The Tinwoodsman was a true bad ass in the books. They watered him down drastically for the movies. I remember as a child reading those books and imagining him stacking wolves into piles 30 bodies high.

Definitely, it's not a perfect show, but it's still great, and 90% of the appeal is Richard.
This show blew me way. Its so strange that this show was running at the same time as Game Of Thrones and GOT is the one people talk about, because this was the supervisor show on all fronts and I loved game of thrones.

Favorite character. Lots of WW1 vets came back with horrible facial wounds because they were standing in trenches with only their heads exposed to direct enemy fire when defending against an attack.
Very true. I've seen pictures of the facial prosthetics that were developed after the war. Some of them were of excellent craftsmanship. There was real art that went into it.
