    It is also important if breeding mice to bring in new mice from different litters from time to time to ensure there is a mix of genetics and not lots of interbreeding. Interbreeding can lead to genetic defects.

    In Australia (NSW) native mice cannot legally be released into the wild (unless through an official program) because if they are carrying any type of disease it can quickly spread.

    I love how your videos are informative but without long breaks. Thank you for this video as our mice gave birth again cuz we didn’t take the male out fast enough.

    question here: i’ve rescued some baby mice from a snake feed store but i think he may be blind. he’s always away from the others and wanders like he can’t find them. he can’t seem to find the food or water and he’s realllyyyy skinny and dehydrated. he doesn’t run when i grab him and he doesn’t flinch when i put my hand in front of him aggressively. didn’t even phase him. he runs into things sometimes and i just don’t know what to do. he’s not doing great and he’s scruffy and you can see the bones in his tail. he won’t eat bc i don’t think he realizes it’s food and it’s almost like he doesn’t know how to drink either he just licks the water. any tips?

      Thanks for reaching out. Awww bless him. Do you know how old they are? I’m wondering if they weren’t fully weaned at the right time before you found them. I’d recommend getting him a milk supplement, I use one called OriginalDV but that’s an Australian brand. Essentially you just want to look for a low lactose milk supplement because mice aren’t good at processing dairy. I get it from the pet store. Try hand feeding him for a while, pop the milk in a bottle top or jar lid and pop it next to him while he’s out of the enclosure with you. If he doesn’t respond to that pop him in a separate enclosure and try feeding him there. Once he’s used to that sprinkle his grain feed into the milk and work up from that. Do you mind sending me a pic of him so I can visually see him? And if you can get a video of him would be useful. My email is miceandratenrichment@gmail.com ❤️

    Can I get some advise fast? I have mice that got in my house…I used have a heart traps.. I just caught 1 and he’s so tiny.. he has hair and eyes r open, but I believe he is young.
    It’s winter in NY, I was going to let him go outside but afraid he’ll freeze .. so I set him up in a tank with food and water.. 3 days in..idk what to do. Idk if it’s a female.. I hear I can’t add a male to a female.. I was going to set more traps this weekend, if I catch the same size, should I put them all together and then release them? I hear just one alone is lonely for them.

      It’s a tough one as it’s colony is probably near by. In Australia it’s illegal to keep animals from the wild so I’m not best placed to advise on this. However, when vets release animals back into the wild it’s always done in the same place they were found - which is counterintuitive given the reason you have the traps. If you are holding on to the little one just plenty of warm bedding - tissue paper, newspaper, hemp bedding or coco coir and you could just pop lots of things to climb like sticks or even dog toys / ropes. Let me know if anything more specific you’d like to know. Female, female will be fine. Male, male would likely fight.

    What kind of care would you recommend for a roughly 10 day old field mouse, rescued the baby from out in the farm after the work crew killed it's mom and destroyed the nest cleaning up some pallets and trash, I've cared for some rescue adult mice but never a baby, I've been feeding it formula with a dropper and it's been doing ok, very energetic and eager to eat

      Aww thank you for rescuing it! Continue with the milk as you are. At about 21 to 28 days you’ll want to start sprinkling some food around its enclosure as it will begin to forage for solid food. I make up my own food but you can also use commercial pellets and fresh nuts, seeds, veggies, fruit etc. He / she won’t be able to be introduced into the wild as they’ll be humanised and would likely die very quickly upon release , so you’ve got yourself a new pet 🥰 Just make sure the enclosure it’s in has lots of soft tissue. I also love using coarse grade coco coir - I get it from the reptile section in pet stores.

      @@MiceAndRatEnrichment thank you for the info, based on your other videos I gathered I'd be keeping em for the long haul, kinda hard holding onto a squirmy baby to induce peeing/pooping, but looking forward to seeing it grow up :)

    I need advice. I saved 3 feeder mice from a pet store and they didn't know the gender and seemed annoyed when i asked. Do you know how I can tell the gender? They are really small and one is super tiny. I was trying to figure out by looking at how they treat each other but no luck.

      Hey! Yes, females have nipples, rows down each side of their belly. On little ones they will look almost like pin pricks. Males don’t have them. Let me know how you go!

      @@MiceAndRatEnrichment I found out one is a male and I noticed he protects the other 2. One is so tiny and hops around all the time lol. I think the tiny one and 3rd one may be girls because they don't have testicles like the other one.

      Can i feed them raw cow milk? Or water?

    • @MiceAndRatEnrichment
      @MiceAndRatEnrichment  2 месяца назад

      @SadieKej If animal formula milk isn’t available then cows milk can serve as a sub until you can get it. Kitten formula is a popular option.
