I adopted 4 girl mices all though the owners loved them they were in a small storage container which came
Out to the same as a 10g tank the day I got them I went and got 116qt storage bin for the time being I made there cage myself so now they live in a 3 1/2ft long 2ft wide and high with lots of things to explore and the top portion I zig zagged some ropes 🐭

Well just depends on what your cat likes and doesn’t like. Cats are not supposed to be fed milk they are lactose intolerant. Water is mainly fine. And they like to eat meat, the fresh meat you’d eat like chicken and fish from the grocery store. Most cats I’ve played with loved feathers long stick toys that you move really fast in their face or on the floor. Or how laser pointers they like those. Anything that requires you to have quick agility cause they like to chase stuff. I had kittens where I would train them to play fetch like a dog with tin foil I’d roll up into a ball and they would go nuts over it.
      Also body language is important.
For example purring is a good thing, while you see it growling or hissing or wagging it’s tail is a bad thing. Meowing depends on the cat, some do it cause they like to talk others do it cause they need something important.

In the u.s. a lot of people are coming around. The pet store near me currently won't even sell a mouse to people unless they have a 20 gallon long or larger and they ask for pictures of your setup before you buy. They started getting rid of all the small cages and now market them correctly as a carrier.

This makes me really miss/appreciate my mice I had as a kid/early teenager.
I kept them from 2003 to 2009 (age 10-16), and it's nice to see a lot of the stuff we did to care for them was actually accurate and correct (given that pet information on mice was limited at the time).
The 192L tank enclosure, extra bedding, large non-wire wheels, owning groups of mice at any time, toy rotation, DIY "lid" with mesh, offering fresh varied food constantly... etc... was all stuff that friends and extended family presumed wasn't required and would often ask us why we bothered.... all because they presumed the tiny wire cage and 1 lone mouse on seed mix was all you needed.

    I’m not a mouse owner, but I am pet-sitting a rat.
His owner (my sibling) said that he would most likely never take food from me and would be very skittish.
But in just two days he’s already taking treats from my hand letting me rub in-between his ears on his head and he even plays with me! honestly I’m so happy that I’ve gained his trust and it’s given me a whole new understanding and love of rats.

    • @margalothegreat_hams
      @margalothegreat_hams 2 года назад +3

*a* rat? As in one? I hope this is not the case, but rats should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS be kept in pairs or groups because they are very social and can become quite depressed if they are alone. Male rats are not like male mice and must always be kept in groups as must females. Even if you could be with a single rat 24/7 they still would not have the same quality of life as a rat kept with other rats, because they don't get the same kind of enrichment from a human. Also, because of stress from being kept alone, they can very easily develop health problems such as respiratory infections, which rats are extremely prone to. Emiology on RUclips has 2 great videos on why rats need to be kept together. I really hope that the rat you are petsitting for is alone because a cagemate is going to the vet, or has just died or something, but if the rat truly is alone I would highly suggest getting him a cagemate(or 2 or 3 or 4...).

I'm not sure what the wee fella will be able to do but I'm still going to get it a wheel to explore. Once it's settled I'm going to check if it's a male or female. Tysm for making this video! I owned rodents when I was younger but I haven’t owned any in like 6 years and have been wanting to get a mouse or two and now I feel really educated on how to find and care properly for them. One question that I do have is their diet, I remember I would just give them pellets and the store mouse mix or whatever it’s called but is this good enough for them or do they need other things like I noticed meal worms in the video

    • @_patchwork_projects_
      @_patchwork_projects_ 2 года назад +2

Making your own mix and scatter feeding is a good option, or at least good quality pellets, not just the store’s brand. I use oxbow pellets, mixed with dried greens, uncooked pasta, (small amount) mixed millet seeds. Since mice are omnivores they can have mealworms as treats or foraging opportunities. Hope this helps! :)

I’m from California and used to own a male mouse from Petco… He wasn’t aggressive nor skittish, never bit me & yea, he was a pretty chill mouse lmao. Loved his cage which I found odd, like don’t chu wanna come out 😂 Nah, he’ll go back in. But he was a good boy. After him, I didn’t get another mouse till like a year later, today, matter of fact. Two babies, SUPER CUTE ! When I just just got them, ofc they hopped out of my hand, kept running off but they adjust quickly. It hasn’t even been 24hrs & they already let me handle them more. They met me today and have not bitten me. I’ve actually NEVER been bitten by a mouse. Only hamsters. Hamsters are more aggressive cuz they actually do bite & not only that but they can be super protective of another hamster as well as territorial (with humans as well NOT JUST OTHER HAMSTERS) 😅 I’ve had hamsters before & honestly, mice are way better. I had two hamsters, male & female when I was a kiddo & it was really just the male that was a total jerk 😭 I wouldn’t even be tryna mess with him cu I know he hate being handled and all. Bu like, he straight up said “paws off” from the female as well 🤡 If I tried to handle er he’d go to my hand & bite it. This dude was always tryna bite me. & idk if it’s cuz he’s just super protective of her or if he didn’t like me or trust me but yea, he was the only one like that. The female “brownie”, she was nice 👍🏻 She’d bitten me before but was nice later on along the road. I still did handle her even with the male being the way he was. It was just a matter of tryna get er on time b4 he get a snip of me 🤡
The mice I purchased today were $2.50 (cheap AF) and from Pet Palace. I like Pet Palace just cuz it has more options as far as animals go. So, more birds, reptiles, they have BUNNIES (pet co and pet smart don’t sell bunnies/rabbits), Guinea pigs is same as any other place, MICE !! + RATS !! 🖤 Tons of bby mice, super cute, different fur coat color (not just the typical white coated feeder mouse) The rats are cute too, I’d never seen one irl before going to Pet Palace.
I agree that they should spread out the mice / rats just so they’re not so bunched up but it’s so not so hard to understand why they do. Cuz in their minds they picture them being meals NOT PETS. I luv mice though & it’s honestly so hard to find em out here. The white feeders… some pet co and pet smart may have them but don’t expect them all too cuz that in fact is NOT the case. Pet Palace has an absurd amount of them which is why I said it’d be nicer if they were more spread out like in different enclosures. But I’m happy with my two new babies ! Absolutely in luv with them !!!

Research shows that you are totally wrong about habitat size. They are more stressed in larger habitats than smaller habitats. The ones sold at stores tend to not be safe, but the size isn’t the issue. Clean and cozy bedding is also shown to be really bad for mice because it doesn’t control ammonia. It can be good for nesting material though. The rest of the information is accurate.
The fresh produce shown can cause gastrointestinal distress if they aren’t used to it. They absolutely don’t need fresh produce, since their natural diet is made up primarily of grains, with seeds and insects also. Produce is naturally used as a water source and not needed if you give bottles.

First off, I love your cockatiels and the fact that they get to fly around free. I had a pet duck who had the run of the house. She died recently after 31 years of being my constant companion. She also had the run of the house. It's a lot more do-able than most people might think. She was very intelligent, self aware, and an absolutely wonderful companion. I miss her greatly.
You seem very knowledgeable, and I'm hoping that maybe you can help me with a problem. I am having a problem with wild mice getting into my house. I've had people over to tighten up the house, and was hopeful since for all the years that I've lived here there have never been mice until recently. Unfortunately, all attempts at exclusion have failed, and I have had to resort to live trapping. Killing is not an option I can accept. I just can't kill or be a party to killing (yes, vegan). The problem is that I simply can't get out to the country to release mice every day, so I need to find a way to keep them comfortable while they await their sentence of transportation. I am using a bucket trap to catch them (see: ruclips.net/video/pHwvVPT202Y/видео.html for an a video of how it works). Since I can't get out probably more than once or twice a week, I need to keep them comfortable, well fed, well watered, and give them plenty of exercise. I was thinking of running a tube into a Habitrail or Crittertrail, or maybe just another bucket with a wheel, bedding, food bowel, and waterer, along with lots of bedding to keep them comfy until the weekend. Then I would simply detach the tube connecting the two and put them in the car for a nice safe ride to freedom. Do you have any suggestions or opinions on what items and brands I should have for this? There are so many on the market that I hardly know where to start.

The only reason I am buying a mouse/mice from a pet store is because the pet store I go to actually does a really good job at taking care of the animals I see them feeding them almost every five minutes not the same ones of course and they keep them really well and they take good care of them it’s called animal city and yes the cages might be quite small but I think the ones in the back are quite nice and big and they seem to do a good job and the only way I can get a mice that’s open is the pet store

7:14 I'm not saying it's good for them but... maybe a harvest mouse? I have a few and they are so tiny :> However, I don't think it would be good to use it on them

Thank you so much for this! I just rescued a wild mouse that my cat almost caught. We have an overpopulation and they're super invasive in my area so the options become kill or keep. I'm a big ecology nerd and I have several friends who are in the environmental sciences. It genuinely is at the point where I can't even ethically release due to their invasive nature, and they'd be suddenly dropped off so far away they may not even be able to integrate to the new environment.
So, me and my partner are about to drop some fat cash to be able to give this one a good life. After getting to know them better and putting them through quarantine and a vet visit and getting them sexed, we'll introduce companions.
Obviously s/he's an adult wild animal so, I'm not expecting them to be social or behave like a pet, but that's okay.
Thank you soo much for this great video. Now we feel confident we're armed with the knowledge that we're doing the right thing for this little one.

my neighbors cat luna isnt afraid of entering random houses, and took my mice :(
alot of years have passed im still sad about it, the cage was escape proof but it wasnt cat proof since we didint have cats back then

Oh my this video is perfectly timed
I was thinking months about getting a pet (I hate rabbits my whole life but I can´t get them here) so mices seem to be just perfect
I "need" something that doesn´t stinkt (like rats.. I love rats but they just have a smell to them) and aren´t loud like birds
    so ... I think I´ll start my search :D

Ive seen some people talking about nice having their own smell as well. Most small animals have a musk of some sort. Some I’ve seen say boys smell more and others say their girls smell more.

Idk if you'll reply, but (idk how you feel about snakes btw) but like, would you be able to feed mice/rats to a snake? I'm personally not able to because I've had pet rodents.

Hello!! I know this video is a bit old but I need a bit of help. I have a field mouse right now that can no longer use its back legs because a cat of mine got to it. It seems fine but is skittish I have never owned a mouse before of any kind and don't know what to do. There does not appear to be much on field mice so i'm having a bit of trouble. I believe he is a male. I'm not sure on his age but he does seem to be an adult. If you could help me a little on what to do and how to care for him I would greatly appreciate it!
