A little late to the party, but I just started my hamster care journey and I decided to use a bin cage. Totally worth it! My only gripe is that the cheapest bin I can find in my place is translucent so it is a little hard to find my hamster when she decides to sleep in her burrow. But hey, it's better than keeping her in a tiny cage or inadequate aquarium.

For UK owners, I can definitely vouch for the Asda bin, linked in the description. We got one as an upgrade for our dwarf hamster, and she's more active now than she's ever been. You can fill it with a deep layer of bedding and lots of toys - the cage even has wheels on the base, making it easy to move around. Also, it's worth watching Erin's DIY shelf for hamsters, which is so easy to make and adds another level to the bin (if you're looking for materials, Wilkos do a telescopic drying rack that works well/is cheap!)

A new way I have thought and am currently using to attach a lid to my diy cage is the baby proofing cupboard locks. They are easy to use without having to create any holes usually just stick on and can go round corners to hold something down enough a hamster can’t move it. My lid is to heavy for a hamster to move but I have knocked it so it want completely secure before so this gives me peace of mind that they are safe.

If you don't have a lid for your bin cage (or cage in general) try using wire shelving from Lowes or somewhere similiar. They can cut these to size so it's cut perfectly to your cage. Use Velcro to keep the lid secure if you need to, however the shelves are fairly heavy themselves

thank you for this video and others hamster videos. by watching your videos. I got rid of all of my Habitrail cages. By watching and learning from you. I will become be best hamster owner. Right now I don't have any hamster, because they past away by natural causes. I miss them, but I have to wait. When I first I was in mourn mode when I first saw your hamster video about bin cages. I decide you are right about those Habitrail cages. They are too small for hamster. Now I am saving up, so I can make and get a large bin cage and large wheel and other things that I need for a hamster. I am so ready to get another hamster now. Once I get the correct bin cage and wheel and other things that I need for a hamster then I will get a hamster again. It feel empty when you don't have a hamster in the house. Thanks for all of your advice. You taught me things that I didn't know. I wish I had your advice when I was child. There are things I would do different. I have hamster since I was child. My mom bought me my first hamster. Since then. I had hamsters all my life. There are things I didn't know that you show me in your video. Like whey they chew on the bars (cage is too small) and why they stop running in the wheel (wheel is too small) and hamster ball (they are dangerous). Thank you for showing me what I did wrong. I am correcting all my mistake. Becoming a better hamster owner. Once again thank you for your advice and tips. You are the best.

I don’t have a hamster I found this by accident and got sucked in because it struck me funny- I’m a goldfish keeper, the biggest issue goldfish owners have is they aren’t prepared for buying a proper sized tank because they have no idea about goldfish. So when the inevitable health problems start and they ask for help they have to emergency get a bigger home for the fish... so of course it’s the same plastic bins used in the video. If the plastic is safe for fish then it’s safe for anything else. If you care about your pets it doesn’t matter how it looks, you get what’s best for them or else! I’ve used these bins as brooders for chicks and hospital rooms for wild animals... great video thanks x

Aww... It's too bad that you're not reading the comments anymore! ☹️ If you did read them, I would tell you that the very first video I watched of yours was the old bin cage video...and I've been hooked ever since! I made a bin cage for my very first hamster, Nutmeg (a Chinese). It was quite the learning experience! I learned so much! Since I live in the US, I went to Walmart and got the largest bin I could find - a 50 gallon! I learned that I'm not strong enough or patient enough to use a knife to cut the windows, so I learned how to use a wood burning tool (if you're planning on using this method, make sure you're in a well ventilated area... And an adult!). I muddled my way through the project and I'm happy to say that it served Nutmeg well! It now houses Daisy (a Syrian).
I just wanted to say thank you for making such excellent and entertaining content over the years! Sorry, I'm not on Twitter. 😉👍

A bin cage is great, but the lid can be opened half the amount for air circulation and small holes can be easily drilled along the top edge of the bin and more everywhere as long as they are smaller than the hamster’s, etc. head. The smaller holes will add greater air flow movement. I like the No cage look of bins and the incredible speed of cleaning them. Bin cages are great for viewing your pet and they will give him a spacious environment to enjoy. It’s a win win situation.

Well, a good start is to send your parent’s this video. If they still won’t buy you one, try proposing something to your parents in exchange for doing more work around the house. I’ve done this and I proposed $5 a week. They decided to give me $20 a month, which is a little less, but the amount of money I get amounts to $240 a year. $5 a week seems like a small amount of money to your parents, but start by proposing about $7 a week, which will amount to $365 a year, but say $7 a week instead of $1 per day. I hope this helps you. Good luck!

My bin cage is perfect for my dwarf. I don’t have to worry about her squeezing through bars, and I can fill it with more bedding than I would in a wire cage. The bedding doesn’t end up on the floor either when she’s burrowing or playing wildly.

i know i’m late but do you use a lid for the bin? i just got a dwarf hamster and i’m upgrading to a bin cage!

@@oceanwidder8748 Yes I did. I switched cage to the detolf later. I would say a lid is necessary with any species of hamster, she almost jumped out of the bin once. :)

Around this time of year some stores carry Christmas tree storage bins which are about the size of a detolf. They're around $30 and can be found at Walmart, Target, and hardware stores.

If you can’t find wire mesh I would recommend using eggcrate, it’s something that’s usually used for ceiling lights but it has sizable breathing holes and it’s pretty easy to secure to the lid, I’ve used both silicone and zipties to put it down (although both work I highly suggest zipties) and it’s also pretty cheap, last time I bought some it was like $10 at Home Depot got a big sheet that I had leftover of when I was done making my cage :]

We actually bought a $20 dremel when we decided to make our bin, because we didn't have the patience to mess with a utility knife or box cutter. 🤣 I didn't think about the plexiglass cutter I had JUST used for another hamster project. We totally could have used that.

We love our bin cage! We have a hamster heaven, which cost us over 100 USD. We were able to get a Christmas tree bin for 10 USD which gives him over 900 sq. in. of interior space. He loves his home and we love watching him in it. We still want to give him more space, but we struggle with space in our home.

In the 90s I had a hamster with a multiple habtrail setup (the original habitrail designs) which was pretty cool. I have been thinking about getting a new hamster and I googled habitrail and was shocked to see how different their products are now. The cages are tiny! There's no way I would buy them now when a bin cage is an infinitely better idea.

Any 110 quart bin should be sufficient for any dwarf, and a 200 quart bin should be sufficient for a Syrian, in my humble opinion... Bigger is better...

For anyone (in the US) just coming to this video home Depot has a clear bin that's around 900 sq in floor space for $36. I use it. I'd caution to check corners frequently for chewing. My hamster diesnt but I'd bet there are some that would. I also have to keep the bedding lower than id like because I'm afraid if he reaches the top he could chew thru plastic part and zip ties but he can't reach it so it's not a problem.

Since this wasn't mentioned in the video I feel like its a good idea to say this: if you join the two bin cages together by cutting off one side, you will no longer have a functioning lid unless you change that too. I feel like someone is gonna need that eventually, even if its in 10 years, and id like to make sure theyre hamster doesnt get eaten by the cat.

It really annoys me when I’ve got big cages for my hamster and my sister and dad says that it’s too big they don’t need this much space 😤 but I don’t care I want my two boys to be happy in their cages. Yes both their cages take space but they’re happy and I’m happy to see them happy
