I use shredded napkins to help my russian hammy with his allergies, the vet also recommended it to be white as some colors can be toxic. The white color also helps to detect color changes in the urine etc. I would not recommend toilet paper as the tissue has thinner layers, when wet it breaks and sticks into the hamster's mouth /tongue/ cheeks . Kitchen paper and napkings are much better and super cheap, trust me , I have to fill 150× 50 cms for my Syrian's habitat and 100x40 cms for the russian so I will save lots of money (not buying the commercial stuff) and better save /use it for their medical expenses etc

In my country the only type of bedding you can buy for hamsters and other small animals is cedar shavings and I know thats bad for them but I had no other choice. I dont know why i didnt think of making bedding with something like this! Muchas gracias y saludos desde Ecuador.

I Just got my Cutie 😍 Last night, young a short haired peachy-golden Syrian girl I named Angel Bear. She is in a Palace compared to the too small over crowded place she was in. She has been running on her wheel pretty much as soon as she was put in her new home, she has burrowed all throughout the substrate and groom's herself in front of us!💕 My husband got her to help me cope better with my chronic pain and the depression it drags with it, she hasn't been here long, but she has already brightened my mood so much! I have been sitting here for hours making platforms, and toys for her. I call her my little "pot head" because her Favorite little hide is a terracotta pot on it's side🤭. I know it is such a "Dad Joke ", but it's funny

Awww ❤ I also got a golden syrian girl ( Honey) from an overcrowded petshop with no toys etc ... sadly she seems to have some PSD and it will take a longer time for her to trust humans.
One of my late dogs ... had an horrible life on the streets and it took her over 4 years to fully trust humans again... so I hope my hamsters soul heals faster.
I wish we (in Mexico) to have laws against bad pet shops.
I only got my hamster girl there because Petco only sells males and I wanted a female.

@@mightyseagoat6874 I just picked up my own golden 6-week old Syrian female a few days ago. She was in a 10 gallon fish bowl with her father (who was huge) and her brother. Now she is in a Prevue 528 cage and loves to roam and play. She also loves her Silent Runner wheel. It's amazing to me how some people cage their animals. I was so happy to rescue this little one. She is a bit hyper but I hope she will calm down over time. I love this idea about bedding and may decide to give it a try. Good luck with your Syrian!

Re The only running 60 seconds at a time: Break off the tissue in to stacks of squares and run them through in stacks. Most shredders will take at least 2-3 sheets of A4 at a time and more expensive ones can take even more. 2 sheets of kitchen tissue is not going to equate to even 1 A4 in terms of how hard it is to cut.
Also, if you have the money buy a cross-cut or diamond cut shredder and then you wont have to tear it up afterwards.
Remember to oil the blades between uses, easiest way is to spray a load of wd40 on to an a4 sheet and run it through just before you put the shredder away

I found an easier way to tear the paper towels, and it doesn't wrek havok on your paper shredder: wet it down first! Paper towels are SO much easier to rip when they are wet...especially the cheaper paper towels, and especially if you pull apart the layers first. Yes, they end up wet and hamsters don't like wet. But when you set it out to dry, it doesn't take long and my hamster is happier now that I'm not forcing him to shred it. 🙂 I will say, it doesn't make such an annoying sound when my husband is trying to watch TV. Ok, so there is that drawback to adding water. But you can make fake tearing noises with your mouth while you tear them. That may be as annoying to him as paper towel shredding. 😁
On more tip:. The expensive bedding doesn't seem to be much more than the egg cartons in Walmart's 60-egg count boxes torn apart. Remove anything that contains raw egg spillage (that's rare), then soak it in boiling water, let it cool and tear it apart. The boiling water will kill any germs.

Thank you so much! This helps a lot! This is one the reasons I love your channel so much since it's so relatable and actually recognizes that the internet is worldwide and not for Americans alone. Almost all RUclipsrs seem to be making content for Americans only or assume all their viewers are always Americans when most of the population of the planet are not in the US. I love how this channel applies to EVERYONE worldwide who'd need help or want to learn. Also if I may say so, you're very beautiful/cool/good looking/charming/pretty/chic/sharp.
So yeah, we do have the commercial beddings in my country (which is close to yours just more to the east but NOT an arab one) but the prices are too insane for constant purchases. So that's why I've been looking for suitable but affordable options for my rescue hamsters that I now need to take care of and welcomed them as my cat's pets (my cat is super friendly with hamsters but since she's aging she seems like she doesn't have enough stimulants to keep her sharp and lively and amused and hence why I wanted to inspire her with her own pets who happen to be these rescue hamsters) whose cage is actually very unclean and already reeks of ammonia as they arrived and with this Corona virus, cleaning the cage have become a must for us.
Once again, thank you! Great video as always!

Hii Erin. I just got a Syrian recently and I’m worried that I’m stressing him due to the tank size. I can’t really get anything bigger than my 40g because I don’t have a lot of space. Also, he has an 8.5-inch wheel for now because I have a 12 inch coming in the mail currently.
Everything else is fine though. he has 6 inches of carefresh bedding, a water bottle, a food dish that is regularly filled with Higgins sunburst, plenty of enriching puzzle toys, and hides that he doesn’t use because he has a nest.
Will he be okay in the 40g? Also, will the wheel be okay for now since I’m waiting for the new one to arrive?

musiqbox . mp4 i think a 40 gallon in pretty good. if you wanna provide extra space maybe a tank topper. make sure if there is wire floor to cover it with like cardboard. but other wise i say you’re doing good. 💓💞

Fish Friends and Fun! Thank you. He can run on it for now without much of an issue, no spine curving or anything. The wheel is noisy, but I need noise to sleep, so it’s a win-win

What shredder are you using? My shredder can't do it, the paper got stuck on the teeth and made lots of dust.

You can add whatever bedding you want under it, just make sure it's actually safe. If not, you can only have this bedding In the cage.

I have done this for 3 years now! It is amazing because I live in a third world country and we don't have any kind of bedding. The only downside is that the kitchen tissue is not as absorbent as a commercial bedding, which means you have to spot clean almost daily unless your hamster has designed spots to pee (Luckily, my Syrian only pees in my homemade sand bath and inside her hideout) and when it smells, IT SMELLS. Really bad. I've also noticed that some tissue can become kind of dusty, but I guess that's okay. I definitely would choose it over cedar or pine at any time!
EDIT: I can't believe you use a shredder hahaha, I always cut it by myself, omg; at least I got used to it and I take around 3 hours doing it but it is worth it. Also, the way I do it (if it helps anyone) is taking around 5 sheets of tissue and then using a scissor to cut them into vertical, not-too-large pieces, like the shredded paper. After I have a bowl full of them, I start messing around with them and separating the tissue with my hand until it becomes flufflier and there are more pieces.

when you use the tissue, does it help to find the urine when you spot clean? For example, would the spots where hamster pees turn yellow?

    • @Soveny1HaHaHammyx
      @Soveny1HaHaHammyx 4 года назад

@@beebuyzus Yes :) Completely yellow as the fibers are really thin. Yet, the cage does not smell at all and if you have a sand bath, the chances of getting the tissue peed are minimal. For example, my cage is really big, around 2 meters x 1.5 meters, and only 5% of the tissue must be thrown out. Sometimes I don't even throw anything out.

Jokes aside, I made my hamster Christmas themed enclosures and I don't have a shredder so I did it by hand... I was shredding those damn napkins for weeks.
