Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagoner. She was the female singer on his weekly show in the 1960’s. When she told Porter she was leaving his show Porter was so mad at her. He told her you are killing your career by leaving. She stormed out after a screaming match between the two. She came back the next day and told Porter “ you sit your ass down and just listen” . After she sang this song to him he told Dolly “ I will let you go BUT, I have to be the producer on that song.

Dolly wrote this as a personal love letter to her boss, because she was leaving his TV show & she wantted to go solo. Whitney did it years later for her movie 'The Bodyguard', where her character was a Diva & her version is a Diva performance. Both are beautiful in their own right. Dolly jokes that Whitney made her rich. LOL

If you haven't done so yet, you need to listen to the original version of this song that Dolly sang on the Porter Wagner Show for the first time here, "Dolly Parton - I will always love you (1974)". This was the first time she ever sang it and it was written to be sang to Porter on their show and you can even see Porter in this version. He came and sat beside her when she finnished the song and told her, "you sang it just sorta like you mean it too". And she looked him in the eyes and said, "Well I really did sorta mean it". That moment was priceless.

Whitney Houston was 5 or 6 years old when Dolly wrote this song. Later when Whitney contracted with Dolly to sing and perform this song Dolly said in an interview "it didn't matter to her if people thought this was a Whitney Houston song as long as the royalty checks keep coming and don't bounce". Dooly wrote and performed this song in 1974.

Dolly wrote and sang a sweet love song and Whitney did a big movie theme version. You have to be dramatic to do a movie theme song when the movie is about the dramatic life of a singer. Dolly's voice is amazing, there is no enhancement here at all. This is exactly how she would have sounded singing in your den.

A very loving reaction ❤🌹! I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to Dolly Parton before: Jolene. I Will Always Love You was released as the second single from Dolly Parton's 1974 album: Jolene. It was written by Dolly Parton. It was produced by Bob Ferguson. The song re-recorded for the 1982 film: Best Little Whorehouse In Texas, movie soundtrack. It reached #1 on the Country chart in 1974. It reached #1 on the Country chart, #17 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #53 on the Hot 100 in 1982. During an interview on The Bobby Bones Show in 2018, Dolly Parton revealed that she wrote the song: "I Will Always Love You", on the same day that she wrote her hit song: "Jolene". Dolly Parton had a variety show in 1976 called: Dolly!, that lasted one season. To close every episode, she would recite the opening lyrics to this song ("And I hope life treats you kind...") and sing it as the credits rolled. This live performance is from that television show.
Dolly Parton wrote the song in 1973 for her one-time partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, from whom she was separating professionally after a seven-year partnership. Leaving Porter Wagoner wasn't easy - he thought Dolly Parton was making a mistake and felt she was being disloyal. Dolly Parton played the song to Porter Wagoner the morning after she wrote it as her way of letting him know that her mind was made up and to express how she felt about him. Apparently, it got the message across: Dolly Parton said that Porter Wagoner was in tears when she finished, and he called it "the prettiest song I ever heard". She recorded it in RCA Studio B in Nashville on June 12, 1973.
Dolly Parton also performed this song to Porter Wagoner on May 19, 2007, during his Porter 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Grand Ole Opry. "This was my goodbye song to Porter", Dolly Parton said before singing to him. Porter Wagoner was suffering from lung cancer at the time and passed away on October 28, 2007.
Dolly Parton was asked during a 2023 appearance on BBC 2 Radio whether it was true that she wouldn’t let Elvis Presley record a version of her 1974 hit song: “I Will Always Love You”.
“I wouldn’t let Colonel Tom Parker [record the song]”, she clarified. Colonel Tom Parker, a Dutch-born carnival barker turned music impresario, was Elvis Presley’s longtime manager and known and often criticized for his cutthroat business style.
“See, Elvis loved the song. In fact, I talked to Priscilla [Presley] not very long ago, Dolly Parton said. “She said to me: ‘You know, Elvis sang that song to me when we walked down the courthouse steps when we got divorced. He was singing to me ‘I Will Always Love You’”.
Dolly Parton recalled that Elvis Presley “loved the song” and had crafted his own take on it. She was so ecstatic about the idea that she initially agreed to watch Elvis Presley as he laid down the track. However, one last-moment snag forced her to call off the whole project.
“[T]he night before [the recording session], Colonel Tom Parker calls me and says: ‘Well, you know we don’t record anything with Elvis unless we have publishing on it, or at least half the publishing’”, Dolly Parton remembered. “Well, I said, because I had a No. 1 song on it, I said, ‘This is the most important copyright in my whole publishing company, and I can’t do that’”.
“I said [to Parker of the decision]: ‘I’m really sorry,’ and I cried all night. I mean, it was like the worst thing. You know, it’s like: ‘Oh, my God … Elvis Presley’”, she said. “And other people were saying: ‘You’re nuts. It’s Elvis Presley. I mean, hell, I’d give him all of it’. I said, ‘I can’t do that. Something in my heart says, ‘Don’t do that’".
Whitney Houston recorded a Soul-ballad arrangement of the song for the 1992 film: The Bodyguard, movie soundtrack. Her version peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for a then-record-breaking 14 weeks. The single was certified Diamond by the RIAA, making it Whitney Houston's first Diamond single, the third female artist who had both a Diamond single and a Diamond album, and becoming the best-selling single by a woman in the U.S. The song was a global success, topping the charts in many countries. With over 24 million copies sold, it became the best-selling global single of all time by a female solo artist. When she won the Best Pop Vocal Performance Female award at the 36th Annual Grammy Awards for her recording, Dolly Parton presented her the award. It was also the world's best-selling single of 1992. She won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance Female in 1994 for the song. She also won a Grammy Award for Album Of The Year for The Bodyguard - Original Soundtrack Album.
Dolly Parton, once again, recorded the song: "I Will Always Love You", in 1995 as a duet with Vince Gill for her album: Something Special. Following an August 26, 1995, performance of the duet at the Grand Ole Opry which aired on TNN, radio stations began giving the duet unsolicited airplay, causing it to debut on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart at number 53. After a performance at the 29th Annual CMA Awards, the song was officially released as a single in November 1995, peaking at number 15 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. This marked the third time Parton had a top 20 hit with the song. The song was nominated at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals and was named Vocal Event of the Year at the 30th Annual CMA Awards.
The song found further chart success as part of the "Forever Country" medley, created in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Country Music Association Awards. The medley also features the songs: "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "On The Road Again". Dolly Parton performs on the medley, along with 29 other country music artists. The medley debuted at number one on the Billboard US Hot Country Songs chart and number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on October 8, 2016.
In 2020, the television special: Dolly Parton - I Will Always Love You, celebrating her legendary singer-songwriting career with archival footage from her early Country days starting with Porter Wagoner in the late 1960s to her success as a crossover Pop superstar a decade later.
The song has been covered by many other artists including 📻: Linda Ronstadt, Sarah Washington, Amber Riley, LeAnn Rimes, Charice, Stella Parton, Roch Voisine, Atelier Bossa-Conscious, Amar, Saskia & Serge, Halestorm, Roger Whittaker, John Doe, Angela, Kristin Chenoweth, Rik Waller, Fleur Seule and more.

    Lyrics 🗒:
    If I should stay
I would only be in your way
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you each step of the way
And I will always love you
    I will always love you
    Bitter-sweet memories
That's all I am taking with me
    Goodbye, please don't cry
We both know that I'm not
    What you need
And I will always love you
    I will always love you
I hope life treats you kind
And I hope that you have all
    That you ever dreamed of
    And I wish you joy
    And happiness
    But above all of this
    I wish you love
And I will always love you
    I will always love you
    I will always love you
    Dolly Parton Info 📰:
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee. She is a singer, songwriter, musician, actress, philanthropist and businesswoman, known primarily for her decades-long career in country music. Her musical influences include: Rose Maddox, Molly O'Day, Roy Acuff, Kitty Wells, George Jones, Brenda Lee and Patsy Cline. She began performing as a child, singing on local radio and television programs in the East Tennessee area. By the age of ten, she was appearing on The Cas Walker Show on both WIVK Radio and WBIR-TV in Knoxville, Tennessee. At 13, she was recording music like the single: "Puppy Love", on a small Louisiana record label called Goldband Records. After graduating from Sevier County High School in 1964, Dolly Parton moved to Nashville, Tennessee the next day. Her initial success came as a songwriter, having signed with Combine Publishing shortly after her arrival in Nashville. Along with her frequent songwriting partner, her uncle Bill Owens, she wrote several charting singles during this time, including two Top 10 hits for Bill Phillips: "Put It Off Until Tomorrow", and "The Company You Keep" (1966), and Skeeter Davis' number 11 hit song: "Fuel To The Flame" (1967).

Fun Fact 🕵‍♀: Several times, long before Whitney Houston recorded the song in 1992, Dolly Parton suggested to singer Patti LaBelle that she record the song: "I Will Always Love You", because she felt Patti LaBelle could have sung it so well. However, Patti LaBelle admitted she kept putting off the opportunity to do so and later deeply regretted it after she heard Whitney Houston's rendition of the song.

Dolly wrote and recorded this song in 1973, when Whitney was still a child. Whitney did not even want to sing it because it was a country song. Dolly does not get the credit she deserves for this, but it is her song.

This is the minority opinion, but I always thought Whitney Houston's version of this song was terrible. The arrangement and production of Whitney's version is over done and she overpowers what is suppose to be a wistful love song about growing apart. I don't deny Whitney Houston was a talented singer and performer.....but she wasn't Dolly Parton.

Dolly wrote the song in 1973, it was released and was a number one hit in 1974. It was used in the movie in 1982 and went to number one on the country charts again. She wrote this song as a good bye song when she wanted to leave the Porter Wagoner Show after her contract was up. It was her first big break. Whitney did her pop cover and then Dolly charted it a third time this time as duet with Vince Gill in 1995.
