Dolly wrote this for her TV partner, Porter Wagner, when she left their show. Elvis wanted to perform it, but his manager wanted rights to the song and Dolly refused. Smart gal. She was listening to this song. While she was driving, she was catching bits and pieces of it. Dolly didn't figure it out until the chorus. She had to pull over.
She wrote that dang hit in a few hours after she got home & then sang it on that show the next day. Dolly's no joke, she's got one of the largest music catalogs in music history with close to 3000 songs. She's got a heart of gold, when they had that forest fire up in Gatlinburg, TN few years back. She paid everyone in the city 1k a month for 6 months to help out, then on the next month she gave them 5k each.
I know you guys loved Loretta Lynn so much. Dolly, though much younger than Loretta, was also born poor and part of a huge family. Dolly also has sisters that sing and her sister Stella had a short country music career. As Coal Miners Daughter was the story of Loretta's life - Coat of Many Colors is about Dolly's life as a child. If you get the chance to watch that movie it will give you more insight to Dolly and what a firecracker she has always been! Great reaction! Just for grins and giggles.. google hits that Dolly has written for other people. She also has a slew of movies she starred in in which the soundtracks were hit songs/albums for her. Thanks for this great memory.
Guys, I loved your reaction to this song. I am so glad you gave Dolly the credit she deserves. Dolly is an amazing talent. Also, I want to thank you for putting a picture of The Beatles on your wall. I wrote a comment to another reacting couple, about putting up a decent picture of The Beatles, but they still haven't. The Beatles are the reason we have a lot of this great music due to their influence. Thank you again, and keep reacting to this great music that many of us grew up with.
DOLLY PARTON is GOD'S gift to the world. She's a true angel on Earth! She's just as beautiful inside as she is out. She's truly just incredible amazing human being!
Whitney Houston personally called Dolly and asked if she could record this song for The Bodyguard soundtrack since she knew that this was a very personal song and story to Dolly. When Dolly received the called she was in tears and said it would be an honor for Whitney to sing this song.
Love the look! Love the song too, and like you said, she performed it as a tender sacrament to horizons of setting love, where new suns will rise, and love is re-nude, I mean renewed. It's like the pretty good book says: Everybody loves themselves some Dolly Parton.
Every time I heard Whitney sing it, I cried. Like you (Though I was younger) when I learned it was Dolly's song, I cry every time I hear Dolly sing it even more because it was so personal for her.
You may have heard this story a million times by now, but Dolly wrote this song when she left the Porter Wagner TV show. She really got started on HIS show. After working for him for years, she wanted to start calling her own shots. He would not allow her the creative license she craved. He was furious with her. She wrote this song for him - which is why she sings it with so much heart. They parted on bad terms. Years later, Porter Wagner hit on hard times and had to sell his entire portfolio of music. Dolly purchased it at fair market value and then turned it all back over to him. Whitney actually did not know that Dolly had written this song. When she heard it on the radio sung by Dolly she said, "Hey! What is she doing singing MY song?!" That's when she was informed who wrote the song. Dolly used to say that when she sang this song, she put money in the bank. When Whitney sang this song, she BOUGHT the bank! BTW, when she made all the money from Whitney singing it, she bought a shopping strip mall in a black neighborhood in Tennessee (don't know the town) and gave it to the black community to use as office space (or whatever they wanted). She is, truly, a VERY special person.
I love both version. Per Dolly interview she sang the song and a little girl came up to her and said That's Whitney's song, Dolly replied "yes, it can be Whitney's song as long as the checks keep coming to her sweetheart".
Dolly had a TV show in the seventies and she would sing this song at the end of each episode! As the song writer, she made millions off the success Whitney Houston had with the song! She says Elvis wanted to record the song and his manager, The Colonel, tried to get her to sell him the rights to the song but, wisely, she would not sell so Elvis, unfortunately, did not get to record it! She is a smart business woman and that is why she has had such longevity in the music business which can be very cut-throat!❤❤
Dolly did not sell the rights to this song. She still owns it and can sing it anything she wants to. It is amazing to me. I grew up listening to this. This is why I love the internet
This is literally her first performance of the song on the Porter Wagner show. More recent versions of this song sung by her, are smoother & more modern like Whitney's. It's still sweet but not as slow & definitely different. She was singing it to her singing partner & host of this TV show. Porter Wagner. She was singing it directly to him. He was bummed she was leaving him to begin a solo career. Dolly also sings this song in a fun movie with Burt Reynolds too, called 'Best little whorehouse in Texas'. She is the madam & he is the sheriff. Cute comedy. Dolly has written many songs for other people, although this one was hers & was just covered by Whitney.
Dolly Parton's version is very tender. She also has a great attitude about Whitney singing it and making it her own. Meant more money for her she always says, LOL! (Dolly has a great sense of humor).
When Linda Ronstadt made this song a hit I didn't know that Dolly had written it. Found that out after Whitney did the song and took it to a whole new level. I love all three versions. You should check out Linda ronstadt's version as well. That's the one that made me love the song. Thanks for reacting to it guys!
She actually wrote it in one evening to let Porter Wagoner know how she felt about him. She said she smiled all the way to the bank when she heard Whitney sing it. Dolly has written 1000s of songs. She also has a wicked sense of humor.
In an interview I watched not too long ago, Dolly talked about the first time she heard Whitney's version on the radio. Dolly was driving and as the chorus hit, Dolly was so shocked that she had to pull over. She thought it was amazing.
I'm happy this was recommended to you! I haven't read the comments above, so this might be repetitive...Whitney and Kevin danced to Dolly's version on the jukebox in the movie The Bodyguard. One beautiful singer's nod to the other beautiful singer. Very heartwarming!
This video was the first time Dolly performed "I will always love you". As someone else said Dolly wrote this song to tell Porter Wagner that she was leaving the show. This performance was her actually singing to Porter Wagner. She left the Porter Wagner Show on Feb.19, 1974.
Dolly wrote this as a farewell to her mentor Porter Wagoner and this performance was on his TV show. Another video has a little introduction by Dolly and Porter joins her at the end. The song was #1 twice for Dolly and was an international hit by Whitney. "Retirement money". ; )
My favorite rendition of this song will always be the one by Dolly's friend and frequent singing partner Linda Ronstadt.✨ It moves my heart like no other and is the one played to Whitney Houston by Kevin Costner during the making of 'The Bodyguard' as a suggested theme for the film. And the rest, as they say, is history. 🎶💞
That is an incorrect story, as Kevin Costner suggested the song, after the song What Becomes of the Broken Hearted which was the first choice, was being used in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. Costner gave Houston Dolly's recording. Houston didn't like the song and didn't want to record it. David Foster the songs producer drove into Long Beach to get a copy of Dolly's recording, but the record store didn't have Dolly's, but they had Linda Ronstadt's album Prisoner In Disguise. David said as soon as her heard Linda's recording, he knew what they could do with the song. When Dolly found out that they were using Linda's recording as the template for theirs, she called David on the phone to give him the final verse which was not included in Linda's recording. She felt it was important to the song, David said he had to add another 45 second to the arrangement. This was David's story, and it was confirmed by Robin Crawford, as she said it was the songs producer who brought Linda Ronstadt's recording and not Costner. The song arrangement is basically the same as Ronstadt's, they just played with the melody line (as my musician friends have told me).
@@mickdenis6630 Don't know if the whole story is true since Whitney's mother used to do backing vocals for her so I'm sure Whitney must have heard Linda's version sometime and they just tried to embellish the sotry, but what must be true because is that Linda's version must have been the template since it's basically the same with some production added.
@@Caprizonica What ? Cissy Houston did backup vocals on a few track for the album Heart Like a Wheel. She was hardly some kind of regular in the studio with Linda, like she was with Elvis. And just why would Whitney have heard Ronstadt's version ? Anyways, I saw the interview with David, when he told the story. And Like I already said Robyn Crawford confirmed who brought her Ronstadts version. Whitney didn't know the song, neither did Foster.
While Whitney Houston’s version shows off her incredible powerhouse vocals, this song belongs to Dolly. The softer, simpler, and in my opinion sweeter version truly portrays the heartbreak behind the song.
..."Class of 76"...When ask what she thought about Whitney singing her song she said...I think she sings it perfect and every time she does it makes me lots of money! Every penny Dolly gets from the royalties of Whitney's version is donated to the inner city and poor areas of Memphis...

What most people don't know is that she took the roalties she made off Whitney's version and gave it to the Black community. She is the most giving human being.
Didn’t she specifically donate the money to the community Whitney was brought up in?
By 1992, Dolly probably had all the money she needed to live a life of luxury. She was in a position to give to charity and her royalties for Whitney's cover must have given her a lot of money to donate.
@@castlerock58are you insinuating Dolly *wouldn’t* donate the money otherwise? If so, you really don’t know Dolly.
Dolly Parton wrote this song! This is the version I grew up listening to. When Whitney Houston came out with her version, it blew my mind!!! However, Dolly’s version will always be my favorite!!! Both ladies are freaking awesome one their own right.
Yes, both are excellent!
But only one person wrote it once, and then made it a hit TWICE...
And didn't die from committing crimes via DRUGS i.e. Whitney the drug addict...
@@KathyRay-wx2rs WOW..that was so uncalled for!!!
@@KathyRay-wx2rscalm down!
A crackhead shouldn't Get no respect she got off crack just to get back on the crack The second time then it killed her God doesn't play he Saved Her from it The First Time just For her to go back that's why she died she mocked him@@LadyGator1983
Dolly is an awesome human being. I love her! ❤
Glad to see you back and Dolly was the original singer in 1973 Whitney Houston did a cover
Yes Dolly! Love her! Check out her hits “Jolene”, “Me and little Andy. “Coat of Many Colors.” Her Christmas movies are phenomenal y’all! Story of her life- amazing! Interviews with her are sooo good as well. So honest, down to Earth and incredibly humble- plus she’s a barrel of laughs! 💜💙✨
I love both versions. Dolly once said that when she heard Whitney’s version of her song she nearly crashed her car it was so good.
She was listening to this song. While she was driving, she was catching bits and pieces of it. Dolly didn't figure it out until the chorus. She had to pull over.
Please change your name to LIAR-phoenixfire83.
Dolly NEVER said what YOU said, LIAR!
Knowing the story behind this song and listening to it gives you chills!
You should listen to Dolly's "If I Cross Your Mind" & "Take Me Back" : those have always been my favorites!
Yes!
DOLLY PARTON is GOD'S gift to the world. She's a true angel on Earth! She's just as beautiful inside as she is out. She's truly just incredible amazing human being!
Dolly...True icon.... Nuff said
This was, is and always will be Dolly's song!
Whitney did a great job too.
agree this came from the inner most part of her heart. I could dedicate this to a lot of people I know right now
Whitney Houston personally called Dolly and asked if she could record this song for The Bodyguard soundtrack since she knew that this was a very personal song and story to Dolly. When Dolly received the called she was in tears and said it would be an honor for Whitney to sing this song.
Many folks don't realize that most of Whitney's songs are actually covers of other artists.
Love the look! Love the song too, and like you said, she performed it as a tender sacrament to horizons of setting love, where new suns will rise, and love is re-nude, I mean renewed. It's like the pretty good book says: Everybody loves themselves some Dolly Parton.
The best version of that beautiful song!
FYI-Willie Nelson recorded a cover of this song many years before Whitney...I liked his take on it too, the song itself is magic~!
Every time I heard Whitney sing it, I cried. Like you (Though I was younger) when I learned it was Dolly's song, I cry every time I hear Dolly sing it even more because it was so personal for her.
Yup she wrote it and sang it; and of Whitney Houston she said “that little gal made me rich.”
When you watch "The Bodyguard" , Dolly's version is playing on the jukebox in the background when they are in the bar.
This brought me to tears. Today is our 31st wedding anniversary. Perfect song for today !!! Thank you and Mel I love your hair !!!!!
Congratulations!
Dolly did not sell the rights to this song. She still owns it and can sing it anything she wants to. It is amazing to me. I grew up listening to this. This is why I love the internet
She wrote that song for Porter Wagoner when she was leaving his show and going out on her own. Nobody can sing it like Dolly!
I’m from TN & ADORE dolly. Songwriting is unbelievable. BUT Whitney is a one in a lifetime performer. She took this song to the heavens.
Amy Lee and Dolly Parton are my 2 favorite female singers of all time, no one else comes close..
Dolly is a living legend. Her version will always be near and dear to my heart. From one Smoky Mountain child to another, I love you Dolly!
When Dolly sings this in Best Little Whorehouse in Texas it makes me cry every time.
Dolly Parton's version is very tender. She also has a great attitude about Whitney singing it and making it her own. Meant more money for her she always says, LOL! (Dolly has a great sense of humor).
Dolly said this song put a lot of money in her bank in 1974 but when Whitney sang it that her royalties earned her enough to buy the bank.
Yes she did
She said Whitney made her a LOT of money! Dolly wrote this because she was leaving The Porter Wagner show. He discovered Dolly.
Dolly said when she had a hit with the song she put a lot of money in the bank. When Whitney had a hit with the song Dolly bought the bank
That 70s mellow ( feels like she's singing in my ear) wins everytime
Mel I love your hair!! You're such a pretty lady! Thanks for sharing Dolly...keep it up you two!!!!
Been to too many funerals of my family members that this song played because my family love Dolly!
I'm happy this was recommended to you! I haven't read the comments above, so this might be repetitive...Whitney and Kevin danced to Dolly's version on the jukebox in the movie The Bodyguard. One beautiful singer's nod to the other beautiful singer. Very heartwarming!
The version they danced to in the Movie was by John Doe.
I love both versions. I can’t say which one is the best. I have listened to Dolly Parton for ever and then I listen to Whitney too.
You can hear the pain and anguish in her voice.
DOLLY just raw talent
This video was the first time Dolly performed "I will always love you". As someone else said Dolly wrote this song to tell Porter Wagner that she was leaving the show. This performance was her actually singing to Porter Wagner. She left the Porter Wagner Show on Feb.19, 1974.
Dolly wrote this as a farewell to her mentor Porter Wagoner and this performance was on his TV show. Another video has a little introduction by Dolly and Porter joins her at the end. The song was #1 twice for Dolly and was an international hit by Whitney. "Retirement money". ; )
I love Dolly and always will. Every since the early sixties when I was young and watching the Porter Wagoner show. ❤💋⚘ Dolly baby.⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘
Sing along daily, beautiful song.thank you for sharing
Love your humor and smiling faces! 5:12
You are two beautiful human beings and I wish you eternal peace, joy and happiness.
Love watching your reactions and the bond between the two of you 💕
She poured her heart and soul into that song for her dear friend Porter. Pulls those heart strings everytime i hear it.
Linda left one verse out so it's not my favorite
I have seen Dolly sing this with Vince Gill.
I loved your reactions and comments to DOLLY PARTON "I Will Always Love you"❤❤❤❤❤❤
Dolly has such a pure love.
Both very different but beautiful renditions.
I love her version of this she did in the ‘90s with Vince Gill, most of all.
One of the most talented, generous and humble people in the business...
In the 70s, Dolly had her own TV show and used to close every episode with this song.
This is one of those songs thats impossible not to cry to
Not only is it her song that she wrote for her boss Porter waggoner but she used it in her movie, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and she sang it there to Burt Reynolds and I was rivetted, thats when I first heard it. With that memory, Whitney kinda ripped into it and it exploded spectacularly onto the World and the rest is history. Amazing. It is one of the greatest song of all time!! Dolly, best ever!
It was a hit twice!!!! I used to have a crush on Dolly as a kid it was impactful back then it was a great song!!!! 23 years later from 74 it still was a hit!!!!
Dolly had a country hit with this back in the day BUT in an interview she said she thanks Whitney for making it soar past the world. Whitney blew it out
Wish y'all could have Dolly on your show live! Y'all are the best! Love from Texas.
My Mama wanted this played at her funeral(Dolly's version. Her favorite entertainer)
My first experience with this song was in the movie Best Little Whorehouse In Texas when she sang it to Burt Reynolds, I remember tabloid papers always shipping the two of them, tho they were both married, I was around 11 when the movie came out but didn't see it until 15 or so, adorable movie 😎💜
Thank you for reacting to Dolly. She's an angel...I swear...anngel
❤️❤️❤️❤️ THIS IS HER BEST SONG EVER!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤️⭐️❤️⭐️ However … Please listen to the duet of this song with Dolly Parton and Vince Gill. The hair on every part of your body will stand up, and give you chills!!! It is THE ABSOLUTE PERFECT SONG EVER RECORDED!!! ❤️⭐️❤️⭐️
