The song WAS WRITTEN as a farewell. Dolly was leaving the TV show she had told up front that she was only staying 5 yrs. Host was arguing with her and not :listening" to what she was saying so she decided to do what she did best. She wrote this song and took it to work the next day and sang this song to explain that she really was leaving.

I remember when this song first came out and I still wonder how Porter kept it together walking on the set after that. Beautiful reaction and analysis as always, Beth. Thank you!
Those of us who are well seasoned, remember Dolly using this song as the outro to her variety show, so we got to hear her do this, or something similar every week. Whitney performed all sorts or acoustic gymnastics, but Dolly gave us the soul. And your appreciation of Dolly's talent is very much appreciated. If you haven't seen it, you owe yourself the Thanksgiving halftime show she did at AT & T stadium this year. 77 years young and still looks like a Cowboy cheerleader....
She brought tears to many people when she sang this to Burt Reynolds in the movie, Best Little Whore house in Texas" He was a cop and she was the madden . very good movie..
Both Dolly and Whitney are so talented and I love both versions. Whitney's version is the one I sing the chorus to at the top of my lungs while listening in my car. Dolly's version I just want to sit and listen to because it's so intimate and fragile.
I love Dolly, Shes a class act. On the red carpet when this song was popular during the body guard movie, Whitney sang it more up beat and made it more popular than Dolly did. The red carpet interviewers would ask Dolly how she felt about whitney making that song more popular than she ever did. Trying to get a cat fight going in hollyyweird. Dolly never took the bait. Dolly just said, Im happy for whitney Houston she made that song more well known than I ever did, Good for her . Because of her I made 11 million in royalties from her singing it. Years later when kentucky got hit with a string of tornados and destroyed lots of homes there. Dolly donated 11 million dollars for the people to rebuild. Very big heart among other things I wont mention. She wrote over 5,000 songs in her carerr. And shes still going. God Bless Dolly.

Nice one again, Beth. Dolly is one of those naturals who has only to open her mouth and magic tumbles out. I always felt that Whitney's version was more about the power of her voice than the song itself. Another favorite is that of child prodigy Connie Talbot at eight years old, in the Whitney style, especially the one Connie did live on German TV. Congrats on the release of your album. All power to you and best wishes of the season.
I like Dolly's version FAR more than Whitney's.. On this song, Whitney belts. Dolly sings from the heart--from a very vulnerable place. We've all been there, right?
Beth Dolly dearly loved the host of the show, Porter Wagner, who given her break. Amazing is that lot of people thought Whitney was 1st to sing this classic til this day. Dolly knew of Whitney's version. But royalties from Whitney's version in Dolly's account. I think Whitney loved this song. I know her management contacted Dolly's during movie production of The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner for singing as part of movie soundtrack.
One of my favorite parts in interviews with music stars is when Dolly Parton and one interview said that "it was a good night", meaning of the day that she wrote both "I will always love you" and "Jolene".
Elvis wanted this song. She wouldn't give it to him. It was an agonizing decision on her part. She was up all night crying about it. Colonel Tom insisted on having Elvis get half of all the publishing royalties to the songs he recorded by new artists. She has said she would have loved to have heard him sing it, but that it was her property and she needed to protect her work. She was asked, "How did you feel about Whitney going to Number One with the song?" She said, "When my version was a hit, I cried all the way to the bank. When Whitney hit Number One with it, I BOUGHT the bank!" What a wonderful sense of humor and what a wonderful person she is!
My wife was somehow related to Dolly. She was adopted but never wanted to contact them. Dolly has always been one of our favorites. My dad adored her. My wife looked a lot like her. That was a great analysis! Both versions are brilliant!! And, met to be. As, Dolly has said when she sang it she took the money to the bank, and when Whitney sang it she "bought" the bank! It's a great song!!! Many, many artists have taken this song on, and many have done well singing it. Just love the lyrics and the diversity with the singers.
Beth you are so amazing!!! I'm a Tennessee boy and grew up with Dolly as a mainstay. You are the best reaction with your reverence and analytical take on Dolly. I also have to say that your red hair and accent makes me wish I was 20 years younger. I might chat you up if that was so. 😉
I love dolly's version - it is no surprise that she understands the emotionality of the song since it is so personal. Whitney does a good job until half-way through, then she is just showing off and it becomes noisy.
I have a 22 year old daughter that has that auburn hair and those blue eyes and ivory skin you are beautiful and I love your reaction. two angels with different voices on a great song. Dolly wrote this song in tribute to her first manager. you really need to check out that story it will give you a totally different appreciation even more for this song
A more updated cover is by Ailee. A Korean American vocalist. Absolutely amazing. It was on a Korean song contest show. Channeled Whitney and added her own vocal range. All the instruments drop out for the second verse. Wow.
When I saw Dolly Parton live at Newcastle arena she described this as "The sing that is going to follow me for the rest of my life." and that probably has more to do with Whitney Houston than Dolly herself. I would suggest that eDolly is more well known for "Jolene" or "Islands in the Stream" the duet she sang with Kenny Rogers, another Country and Western artist I saw live when I was going through a period when I went to see any band or singer I hadn't seen perform live irrespective of muic genre!
Dolly is an American treasure. I was born and raised in Tennessee and Dolly is quintessential south belle with her charm, talent and charity that is unmatched in the world today. My grandson gets a book from her charity every month as she promotes reading to everyone that wants better for their children. Thank you Dolly from a fellow Tennessean.
This song was a song saying good bye to Porter Wagner and to the show her love for them all then she sang it to Burt Rennales in the Best Little Whor House in Texas ❤
I'm glad you mentioned the sincerity in her version. I have always liked this one better than Whitney Houston's version for that reason. It better conveys the actual meaning and intent of the song because it is her personal feelings. She isn't trying to understand what someone else was thinking when they wrote it.
@@genghisgalahad8465 It to my ears is a technically perfect rendition, but I find it completely devoid of feeling and emotion. It sounds like someone trying to impress Simon Cowell, not communicate an emotion. That is why I call it emotionally flat.
@@jon-paulfilkins7820I think the same as you, the Dolly version reaches your soul, it makes without having that power of voice that Whitney Houston has, it captures your attention and as if it were you that she will talk to you. I love Whitney and I like her interpretation, but Dolly should be that menu that should always be on your table.
I probably cry a little bit every time I hear Dolly or Whitney sing this. Dolly is obviously the original gem, but Whitney made it her song too. Peace, Love!!
There is also a beautiful arrangement of l Will Always Love Youn by Linda Ronstadt, l think on her album, Prisoner ln Disguise. Linda goes softer on the chorus, too! l think that album is from 1972!
The film _The Bodyguard_ was originally planned to feature "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted," but rather than a rights issue, it was because the song was featured as performed by Paul Young in the movie _Fried Green Tomatoes_ while _The Bodyguard_ was filming that they decided not to use it. When they were looking for a song to replace it, Kevin Costner said he had an idea and brought in Linda Ronstadt's 1975 album _Prisoner in Disguise_ and played that version of "I Will Always Love You" for Whitney and the other people working on the film. You can find Linda Ronstadt's version easily enough on RUclips if you're curious about the version Whitney first heard.
Quite simply, Whitney sounds like she's singing for the the world to hear. Dolly sounds like she's singing for one man only (The man the song was written for)
Son muy buenas las dos versiones en lo personal me encantó la primer versión se escucha más melancólica me facino lo hablado de la canción le dió la magia del tema bien mi H. Prrj 💙👏👏🍀🍀
I haven't read all the comments, but its heartening to read so many folks agreeing with me. And not just because its nice to have people agree with you! LOL! It is, but I just adore Dolly and this song so much. Whitney was and always will be amazing, and she has songs that express gentle emotion....but this cover wasn't that, and I feel like it just isn't the same without Dolly's gentle treatment of the song...I just feel tons more emotion from her original version. I know part of that is because she actually was FEELING those emotions when she wrote and sang it. But more so I think it loses a lot with the belts. Nothing against belting songs or belting singers, I just think it wasn't as suited to this song as it is to many others. Love Dolly! I'd love to hear what you think Beth, of Dolly and Kelly Clarkson's slowed down version of 9 to 5??) Congratulations on your new music! Loving it! Happy New Year!

There will never, EVER be another DOLLY, she's such a sweet Class Act !
Dolly sang a personal message, Whitney performed a song. I'll take Dolly's version everytime.
Brilliant analysis of a superb song. Thank you.
I love dolly's version - it is no surprise that she understands the emotionality of the song since it is so personal. Whitney does a good job until half-way through, then she is just showing off and it becomes noisy.
It’s a pop cover. Definitely over commercialised
I totally agree!
The version she did in the movie was much more gentle and nuanced. I much prefer it.
That was so sweet and pretty ❤ 🎶 nicely done, Dolly
Some make it look so simple!!:):) Like all the greats in whichever art they do it in!
Great Reaction Beth Huge Fan of Dolly
They used this song in a Dolly movie, too! : Best Little Whitehouse in Texas...☺️
Saw this episode when it first aired as a kid. Incredible.
LET ME GO, PORTER!!!
Mention should be made of Linda Ronstadt's 1975 version that stands as the clear path from Dolly's to Whitney's -- it has country and power both.
I saw the show when Dolly sang this for the first time. The Porter Waggoner show. 1970 something.
Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagoner when she left his show. It was her way of smoothing over the the hurt feelings.
I love both! Dolly loves Whitney’s version & isn’t shy about telling how much money it made for her!
David Foster arranged this song for Whitney based more on Linda Ronstadt cover than Dollys original
The ultimate resignation letter.
I have always felt that there is a tenderness and fragility in Dolly's voice, unlike Whitney who is technically perfect but feels emotionally flat.
Um, not emotionally flat. Simply bigger sound and longer notes. There's a note.
@@genghisgalahad8465 It to my ears is a technically perfect rendition, but I find it completely devoid of feeling and emotion. It sounds like someone trying to impress Simon Cowell, not communicate an emotion. That is why I call it emotionally flat.
Describes my feelings exactly
@@jon-paulfilkins7820I think the same as you, the Dolly version reaches your soul, it makes without having that power of voice that Whitney Houston has, it captures your attention and as if it were you that she will talk to you. I love Whitney and I like her interpretation, but Dolly should be that menu that should always be on your table.
Great job. Tnx!
I probably cry a little bit every time I hear Dolly or Whitney sing this. Dolly is obviously the original gem, but Whitney made it her song too. Peace, Love!!
The Whitney Houston version is perfection. The Dolly Parton original version is real, honest emotion. I prefer emotion.
Whitney's sounds like an anthem. Dolly's sounds like a goodbye.
Whitney does the Disney princess version
She does it best
And live, to boot.
Would love to see you compare with Linda Ronstadt's version, which I see as the link between Dolly and Whitney. Great song no matter who sings it.
Marc Martel did an incredible cover of this. Just him and a tele. Cleanest thing I've ever heard.
Prrj 💙👏👏🍀🍀
I still love the sadness of this version better. It's very intimate.
The voice of an Angel.
