Grow lights can be expensive. But they don't have to be.
Here are three ways you can get the most out of your grow lights, without having to break the bank.
BEST TIP. Buy a bar light that will work with some of the bars removed. I have a 600w Protontek/Lumitek. in my 4x4. In early veg I only need one bar at 50%. So only 50watts being used. If the plants haven't spread out I can still hit 800/900 with just Four of the six bars in place. Then add more bars as and when needed. This is a huge saving in power costs. I did email Customers services and ask if it would be OK before I tried it. And they said that it would be fine and each 100watt bar would still work at full efficiency.
As stock the light only had 25% dimming increments. But I got the cables to hook it upto my AC Inf 69 controller and now it has dimming in 10% increments. which has made it even more flexible.
Awesome info!
Thanks for sharing, great tip.
LED light is cool, but there’s something warm and inviting about good ol’ HPS light.
Not when the electric bill turns up😂👍

There's something to the costs of air conditioning when trying to run a hps and worry about burning your house down
Re: the last ep 48hrs of light before harvest. Omg what a huge difference man the girls stacked on heaps of weight and tricomes just bust out of them. Great advice Scottie. Cheers from Perth Western Australia 🍻 🇦🇺
Hell Yeah, Glad it helped!
Good episode as always! Bugbee has the knowledge!
I love HLG Great lighting.
always excellent information given to you in a way you can understand. love you guys.
Thank you.
Thanks Scotty some good food for thought as usual. 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it
Ive been running viparspectra for 3 years now great lights!
Great info as normal Scotty, only thing is Green light! They use to think green light wouldn't wake them and it wasn't used for photosynthesis. But they now know that it does and it's also used in photosynthesis, it's actually as good as Red for penetrating the canopy, maybe even better. Dr. Bruce Bugbee wrote a paper on it awhile ago.
Good info scotty. Let's grow !
🙌
Great info and easy to understand. Thank you!😁
Thank you.
Great content as usual! Thank you!
Thank you.
Definitely get a par meter. Don’t trust those light charts!
I got the Photone app and diffuser and use the manufacturer’s hight settings and set DLI according to a chart. The settings it gave me were pretty close to when I was just eyeballing it and guessing. The app and chart dialed it on more precisely. I use two 100w in a 3x3 and a 300w in a 2x4 so it’s essential to dial them in as close as possible with a setup like mine.
Respect from the UK brother 👍🏻💪🏼
I appreciate that
I use 4 ac infinity s22 lights in my 4x4 for 4 plants. So i can grow different strains together. The shorter plants lights bleeds off the the lower canopy of its neighboring plants. Adjusting each light accordingly like Scotty does also helps to save me electricity. Great tips
Great info DGC 👍✔️🌱.
Thanks 👍
Great info Scotty and hi c
Hey, thanks
Grand rising brother
I remember talking to you about the 24/0 light schedule before, and I decided to give it a whirl. I will say it is a lot easier to keep the environment dialed in when you don't have to worry about the heat from the lights going away when the lights turn off. But I do think they appreciate the dark. Just from looking at them. I'm going back to 18/6 now.
I agree 100%! I turned my veg lights to 24/0 to have better temps to root a bunch of cuttings, but the bigger plants started to get pissed off, so I'm going back for now too. I don't do 18/6 though. I do 6/2/6/2/6/2.
I've done some full 24/0 runs. for the stability of it. Then went to 18/6, but now mix and match as autos don't need a pattern. I'll go 24 in veg so I get a build up of heat and humidity, Which is hard on low PPFD. Then as I get to about week 4/5, I go 18/6 as they are getting hit with some high DLi and need the break. But when I get to my last 10 days, when I leaf strip, to let them ripen., I go back to 24/0 but lower the PPFD and try to keep it below 78f with a high VPD.
I haven't worked out if it makes much difference to yield though. As I grow several different auto at a time that produce different weights.
My beard dragon was upgraded to a 4x2x2 and her old uvb tube doesn't cover 2/3 like i like and now have to order a new one. Which means my girls new 12% tube will go in the tent.
hey, the lights i have are mars hydro fce4800, lumii black 720 watts, i also have a lumii blade black 100 watts (that's sometimes for grow it replaces a 250 mh) and have 3 hid lights i'm not using atm. I also just ordered for a small tent a grow the jungle 250 watts nemisis. I am satisfied with the results of all lamps and it's much easyer now with led lights. Oh and supplemental lights i use, different models for every setup but IR (before wake up and after lights out 15 mins), UV A (as mid day light from mid grow to harvest), UV B (end of bloom weeks for terpenes etc i start really soft with uvb at like 10 minutes shots maybe twice a day and skip some days at the start and raise the times very slowly every few days), Deep Red (bloom boost, i just got the deep reds and will be trying them out on this present run). I have the new seedlings at about 200-230 ppfd 18-6 and they seem happy atm.
I use the Photone app and purchased the diffuser. There are charts for photos and autos that provide DLI by week with or without CO2.
I dug into this a couple months ago and it takes the guesswork out of setting the lights. My grows are in two small tents with lower wattage grow lights and makes a big difference.
I can’t recall where I downloaded the charts from but they were an easy find by searching.
Good info, thanks for sharing.
HLG HLG HLG!!!!!!! Daaaaa BEST!! 😂 Nice show Mr Real!! 🎉
Facts!
Another thing I've noticed is my plants seem a little happier when I have a blurple spectrum or at least big spikes in red and blue and not much green yellow orange as it seems to give me the best quality
I just use a budget bar lights on amazon. Never had a minutes problem with growing from seedling to flowering and so on. You can raise or lower the lights as needed. They also produce from 400w power output on way up from there. I use 400w starting and then add another light if needed. They also connect together. I havnt had to run over 3 bars. Buds are huge and plenty of terpene production. Smooth smoke and a high equal to the best potent flower out there! Stoner from the 70's! No B.S
What is the brand and model of these lights?
Thanks for sharing
@@pursaveer9027 got em on Amazon on sale. I don't think they're in stock last I looked. They were from China. Still working. I'm on my 3rd grow batch. There are more tho on there just as similar tho

The company gives you a hanging height 😊
Just checked my PPFD on my mars hydro lights. The dimmer switch at 100% caps my PPFD at 300. Turned that off to AUTO 100 and it was 700-1300. Dimmers can fail!
And top bolts will be a lot hotter than lower bolts plus their bigger so extra heat can cause extra humidity then rot cause they transpire like us so cooler temps is really needed
I got 6x LED lights in my small grow space and using 'Science and Light Spectrum' for my girls. I don't use all lights at same time as the heat would be too extreme and that's with multiple fans + extraction kit in play.

When I dial up my lights ( btw, I have the exact same meter you held up) I jump about 75-100 PAR each week in one shot. I will usually dial it up half way through the cycle for the day so that the sudden intensity isn’t for the full 18 hrs. ( I’m auto flower only).
I don’t burn the plants but now I’m wondering if maybe I’m stunting them just a little by turning it up that much in one shot, being that my only complaint about my plants is that they just never seem to get that big. Most don’t get two feet tall.
I’d LOVE to meet Cortez and pick his brain for a while. I was gonna try to get to the DGC cup and try to meet him but funds just don’t allow it this year. I’m definitely gonna try for next year
Cortez is on IG if you have an account send him a message!
Figure out how many Amps you will be pushing then choose wattage within an area that can sustain even growth. In my household opinion😊 Thanks
How about when to increase intensity at the different stages and light height for HLG lights? 350 diablo
300, 600 and 900 are multiples of 3, 6 and 9. Nikolai Tesla would be proud 😉
😂
Grower's Choice ROI 200 watts!!! or the 680 watts are awesome also!!!
Lights you should use are good bar light, h l g grow light. I have a 600 h l g grow light and a spider farmer 4000 what l myself use
If you want to run 1055 PPFD then add in a CO2 BAG or CANNISTER... simple science team green! 🌱🌲🌺
Make sure your growlight is modular....my light (ChilLed Tech ) can be upgraded to take their latest LED panel , there is a drop off in light intensity over time so an expensive light can be useless after( x) years. I can also swap out drivers and dimmers if needed.
Same modular system as the German pro-emit lights.
Dudes got a app, im old I need simple let me at that lol. Gotta show u these plants I ran. Good god
Growdots made my grow CAKE. Added recharge this time around but I'll be sharing pics with u once able.
Hell yeah come show them off.
I'm using both LED and HPS and MH I see a difference with LED but almost same results with the HPS/MH
Skotty, wanted to know if I can use soil in your real buckets? I know u don’t necessarily use soil but if you have heard of good results with it. I travel for work every week and wanted to get away from my cheap drip irrigation set up. Thanks
It depends on the soil, and how well it wicks. it will work but I have found the best results with coco.
I'm with hi-c here. The science technicality 😳
😂
If you run 24hr light ypu can use less ppfd to reach DLI
My light has a veg. switch and a bloom switch , when l decide to bloom do l leave the veg light on also? when the veg light is on the light is kinda pink , with the veg light is off the light is red.
Check the manual for it, some of those lights will use both switches on for bloom.
Scotty what par meter was you holding in the thumbnail??
www.amazon.com/Full-Spectrum-Precision-Photosynthetic-Activity-400-700nm/dp/B0BTYW7SDP/
Ok but what happnes if ur DLI is to high besides ur energy bill?
When are you expanding your distribution to Europe? (Grow Dots & Recharge)
We are working on it but do not have a time frame currently.
Awesome
Make the app available in EU
Regardless of the topic - always informative and most importantly it’s your charisma and authenticity in delivery Scotty ! Cheers
Got to get the recharge for the bigger roots for bigger fruits 👍🔥🔥🔥 and you got to have good genetics 🧬🧬🧬🚬⛽💨🚀🛸😎
Facts
Take a 1/3 off 600w = 400w,
Add a 1/3 onto 400w = 533w???
Need to inceease it by 50% to equal 600w ;)
Exactly, thanks for the reminder...
Two of my lights, LEDs, are going on 5-6 years old now. How much longer do you think they will last? I have four lights now so it won’t hurt if one quits. Got time and light to order a new one. That was my biggest fear lol. Burn my plant in flower lightly with my new hydro mars light. Light learner curve I am calling it…. Lol.
What brand do you use?
@@JDaBz8 I have two 1200 vivosun and one small one for clones, not sure on brand but 600 watts and my new light is the mars hydro dimmable.
they maybe loosing some efficiency at this point.
I just calculated my DLI at 12/12 and it's stupid high. Using 3x420w led lights each at 2416 ppfd at 12 inches. Each light is supposed to cover 4x4. 4 plants in a 4x8 tent. 312 DLI/4=78 DLI.
One thing every grower should know before buying a grow light is how your gonna afford an HLG Scorpian Diablo X😊
What is the perfect height, par ppfd for a mars hydro fce 3000 using for a 2x2 grow tent
1.5-2 ft
check the Mars website.
Is the Sulphur Plasma lamp good for growing or just an led,,,?
the Sulphur Plasma lights won't produce the correct spectrum for cannabis.
@@ScottyReal420 thanks for the tip
Yessir
Chill craft has lights that last many years . Don’t bump your head it not junk you would break your skull before you broke the light😂 Phillips is supposed to be number one now and they are pushing the pink one led I think
Better lighting behind you will stop the shadows
Less is often times more. You do not have to spend a lot of money to get a good grow light that is efficient, hits the correct spectrum, is safe in regards to fire and electric hazards and your plants will grow under.
What’s everyone’s opinion on a seedling/clone light?
I like the kit AC infinity have with the seed clone light and dome

I bought 3 ,3000 watt equivalent king led lights . Growth at first during veg was great until they got over a foot tall. Growth slowed and I thought was a ph problem. Wasn't. I bought a light meter and wrote down the results. Didn't do at start, wish I had. Each week ppfd went down slightly.. WTF! After a dismal harvest. I went back to a 1000 watt hps on a light mover, WOW there was such a difference. I could put the exact figures on here but I will let all you interested and intelligent viewers decide for yourselves. A good light meter will help in any room, and save you money. Also the plants can't hardly use the light if you keep cutting off all your leaves! Cut off those bull shit lower branches that only produce a few grams of junk.
Wish I knew that far red and UV would give me worse results than my lights without it
There's a lot of 'hot new things' in growing weed! The people that ALWAYS do well are the ones that sell the stuff we use. There are a lot of variables too, like temperature, strain, and humidity. Overall spectrum is another thing. My Mars Hydro SP-3000s have a bluish light, but the Mars Hydro TSL-2000s beside them have a warmer white spectrum. The tiny UV diodes in the SP-3000s do nothing. The California Lightworks UVB tubes do nothing.
One thing I've noticed is that when we the growers share our weed with each other, none of our weed matches the descriptions used to sell us the genetics. So we try again- and again- and again..... thinking that if we only buy the next great thing, the ever-elusive carrot will then be within reach.
Any 5 bucks multimeter will do as good as a parmeter...
Red light is what burns your plants. Cool white light it’s much harder to burn your leafs
One really important thing I would suggest to maximize your grow lights doesn't actually have anything to do with your grow lights
Train your canopy so it's flat via multiple topping / super cropping / or scrog to make it easy.
That way, your preferred (900 level of PPFD) is hitting the whole plant, rather than just a top bud (as we know, cannabis typically grows like a Christmas tree).
Good Advice!
All this sounds great, but still doesn't help me feel anymore informed about making a purchase on a light. Mainly because i dont know all the science going on with a grow light. However, from what I've looked at, which isn't evdn close to the amount of brands that exist, the spider farmer 7000 seems to be a great light. There may be a better 1 for less, but, still... I'm in the dark 😁
Check out @Migro you’ll be able to make a decision after watching some of his reviews. Great info!
What size tent or area are you covering. Go to shames MIGROW channel her on YT as he does the best reviews and gives the best knowledge on lighting.

Most of the modern light are all pretty good. you don't need high end when the current spider farmer and Mars hydro or AC inf all do great lights at a good price. Spend more on efficiency for long term gains. But make sure you budget for a decent digital controller and fan system. I brought what was one of the best high end lights at the time. But my best bit of kit that I would replace like for like today is by ac infinity 69 controller and 6 inch fan.. By far the most important thing in my set up.
@@UbiquitousRomp thanks for your input, that helps a lot.
Migro channel has great info on lights. Scotty has recommended his channel before as well. Good luck!
Grow dots killed 100 of my clones. Terrible
Im gonna stick with the 24 hour veg, i think i get less strech that way
2x 600w led floodlights.. one times cob 400w led side light .. 200$ no grow light will produce more light than this
Some leds put out more light per watt than others
Flood lights are meant to illuminate dark areas and produce high light intensity with low spectrum range. horticultural LEDs are specifically made to produce a wide spectrum for plants.
What kind of area would 1600 watts cover if you use flood lights. Not much I suspect. 1000 watts will do 25 squarer feet with bar lights. No need for more. Waste of power. Not enough red spectrum. No IR light. Not evenly distributed.
@@doubleooh7337 I get a ppfd of 1900 at 8 inches and 1000 at +-14 inches away don’t need stronger .
@@anthonyromano8565 20 sq don’t lollipop as the side light hits the lower buds .
"All i know is that i have a ppfd-meter here for 80$ or you can use a photon app" - there is a reason those usualy cost 400€ upwards...its not a simple measurement and if you dont understand how and what you are measuring it you might aswell just rely on the PPFD values from the manufracturer and just multiply it with your dimming factor (Eg. 1100 ppfd at 100% would roughly turn into 550 ppfd at 50% dimming.) This is obv still not too accurate but far better than buying some crappy measurement tool for 80$ that will just show completly random results...
What PPFD refers to is the amount of photons in the PAR (Photosyntheticly active radiation) region of the light (~400-700 nm) - measuring this AT LEAST requiers a photodiode with a bandfilter which alone would cost you about 50$ in parts for a decent set with filters that actualy let like 95% of the light pass in the 400-700 nm region...
A lil bit more "science" would not hurt when you try to analyse your grow! ;) When it comes to light id take a closer look at what sanlight ist doing - austrian company with a lot of dedication to light development - they also have a few very nice studies out that show how far you can go with your plants without major bleaching and no additional CO2 to keep it beginners friendly :)
to use fullspec LEDs with uv in the lights if light has no uv its junk
