Honest, I kind of think this release is pretty close to criminal. They rushed this release and all the devices are faulty. It's a failure from Amazon on all fronts. Really, they should have just done a colour version of the Oasis and released that in 2025. They might still do that, but they've really botched the colorsoft. I don't understand how Kobo doesn't have any of these issues and they released the Kobo Libra Colour back in April! They're all going to differ slightly, and the color gradient issue (contrary to what people say, it is not a "band") is going to continue for some time. This means that on some units the issue be more visible than others, especially based on what settings you use and the interior lights in your room. But trust me: every unit has the issue. It'll probably take them a couple of months, at least, to come up with a fix, make it, test it, approve it, implement it, manufacture it, send them over from China, and then send them to customers. Until then, you're just rolling dice hoping you get one that is better in that way, but not worse in some other way.

Paperwhite also has the yellow band issue. Had two, both had it. The first one was overall much more yellow comparing them side to side and had a dead pixel on the display. The Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen will naturally have a slightly warmer tone than the 11th Gen because it uses a newer E-Carta 1300 display vs. the older, bluer 1200 in the 11th Gen. People are used to the cooler lighting of the old Kindle, so now that the color temperature is warmer on the 12th Gen, a few people are complaining. Depending on the generation of the display, the color tones will always vary slightly. You get this on other display technologies as well. A lot of people complain about silly things like that. To me, it never bothers me. I don't stare intently into my displays. I instead read words or look at the content. I follow phone displays often, and you get the complaining there, too, occasionally. There really aren't too many issues with the Paperwhite models. However, you will always have an occasional defective unit in any electronics component run. PlayStation consoles, TVs, etc., have a certain percentage failure rate. So, the Paperwhite 12th Gen performs roughly the same as the 11th Gen at the same point in its initial launch cycle. The Paperwhite models have a 4.2-star rating with only around 250 reviews. This will likely increase from 4.5 to 4.6 once it reflects higher customer counts. Remember, Amazon is selling millions of units globally. Now, the Colorsoft? That's a different story. Unfortunately, it has a slight screen issue, so its ratings drastically differ from those of the 12th Gen Paperwhite. The lighting on the Colorsoft is a bit different. Instead of smoothly diffusing the light across the whole display, it creates a bright spot at the base of the display. Otherwise, the Colorsoft display performs as well as expected for a 2nd-generation color E-Ink display. It will look less crisp and offer less contrast than a regular Kindle. Some sacrifices are made to bring color. (Including battery life)
It is kind of funny that we stare at our bright phone screens all day and yet people complain about this! Thank you for the screen info, too. What do you think will happen with the colorsoft? I'm contemplating just keeping one regardless since it will now be a memento of this whole thing!
@@SummerSayre If Amazon can't fix it or at least mitigate it through a software patch, I would guess that Amazon will likely release another new Kindle Colorsoft as soon as a new and improved screen becomes available. @SummerSayre For now, probably on a Premium model due to the increased cost of the display is my guess. Hello! I've been wanting a Kindle for so long. While Kindle is a bit more ''closed'' compared to a Kobo, where you can load pretty much any format and store in any way you like or want, I've always enjoyed the look of Kindle more, and specially the connectivity with Amazon account, and the font, though you can probably side load it onto a Kobo anyway. The one issue I've always had with Kindles is that I always disliked missing colour. E-ink colour is nowhere as good or as vibrant as a normal LCD screen, but it's getting there. I just hate the thought of missing out on books that have lovely coloured covers or illustrations or pictures.. So, I was happy to hear Amazon finally doing their own colour Kindle.. but was NOT happy at all about the price. It's in my opinion, a bit overpriced, specially when competitors have the same colour and screen much more affordable.. but just like Apple it's the price you have to pay if you want the ecosystem. For a casual usage, how do the colour stuff in a book, look? Is it okay enough, even if a LCD screen will always look better? I've heard lot of reviews say because of the filter, the black and white is not as good as the normal Paperwhite for example. Or the yellow band issue.. I am worried about buying one (it'll be by next year, anyway, even if I deeply want it now, gotta wait) because of that issue, and if it ever is a hardware fix I'll have to pay again for it. What do you think, is it worth getting this, what are your thoughts on using this?
I think highlighting and chapter headings look good! I'll do another video soon to show what it looks like in-use so you can see. I think the black and white is fine, it honestly looks just like any of my other kindles while reading! I think it's worth it if they fix things up - vivid mode definitely helps, but lets see how they do moving forward with the yellow gradient issue! Let me know if you think of any more questions!
I'm definitely keeping mine. I love it and for me the yellow faded a lot the more I read on it to the point I don't even see it anymore. I read a lot of color content but have read several standard text only books on it and have really loved it. I still prefer a smaller device for reading text only books...but the Colorsoft works great and I love it. Totally understand why some people aren't happy with it and they should absolutely return it if it doesn't work for then. But for me it's love.
It’s simply not good enough it’s an expensive gadget and should look perfect when new. It’s a glue issue. They used a different glue on colorsoft model. They talking about using a software update but logically how can that really sort out a glue issue that different for different units.
@@SummerSayre I'm pretty sure it's because of them switching to a different brand of optically clear adhesive, as I have read somewhere. I suppose they can make it less obvious with software that doesn't let you change to settings to make it the most obvious, but a total solution will involve hardware, as far as I can see. On the other hand, for many people, it's not really that noticeable. I watched another video where the guy insisted that his Kindle doesn't look yellow on the bottom and comments were insisting that it does. If the guy can't really see it, it's not an issue for him, so it's kind of blown out of proportion. If you're comparing the two screens for sharpness, you really have to have the same sized fonts on both. Also, leaving automatic brightness on is apt to through off any comparisons because each one will auto-adjust to what it has "learned" about all the adjustments you have made in the past under a similar lighting condition.
I’m actually dropping off my colorsoft today for return. I just didn’t find it worth the money. I’m just going to use my oasis until I can’t and then go from there 😅 I’m sure things will be running more smoothly by then.

@NeilWick thank you for the info and for watching!
You have to leave the automatic setting turned off if you actually want to compare them.
I turned it off at some points lol!
i love my colorsoft the yellow dosent bother me
Oh good! I'm so glad to hear that!
I don't know why but the yellowness gives nausea.
Oh no! Definitely wait for a fix then!
I returned the Colorsoft and got the new Kindle instead.
Oooh the basic or paperwhite?
I’m actually dropping off my colorsoft today for return. I just didn’t find it worth the money. I’m just going to use my oasis until I can’t and then go from there 😅 I’m sure things will be running more smoothly by then.
Hopefully it’s fixed soon! The oasis is amazing! 😍
