Tiny house build part 1

- This series will show building a tiny home mini cabin. Not necessarily a How to build a tiny house video series, more of a documentary on how I built mine. The beauty of building a DIY cabin is you can do it how ever you want especially when building on a movable trailer, it’s not permanent structure. Build, have fun, experiment, try different materials, make a cool structure and don’t over complicate things.

Didn't get notification of this video. Turned notifications off and on again hoping that fixes it?
Thanks for trying that, it’s unfortunate but I think YT has dropped supporting or even suggesting my channel, I get 6K views in 4 days but have over 260K subscribers on my channel?
Thanks 😊 I appreciate your support. Unfortunately trying to keep my channel alive is proving to be a loosing battle, not sure if I will be able to get my viewers back?
It’s been a labor of love for many years, I like making videos but this free content ends up costing me a lot to make.
Yes such a shame, i've just stumbled on this after random scrolling my main page after 5 min, thanks for your content Mike ;)@@Mikefestiva
@@Lou1ouze Thanks for checking out my new video and showing your support 😊👍
Notifications are working again now!
@@wesleyblaha3537 Right on! 😊👍
If you’re in Seattle, stop by Sound Foundations NW in SODO. We build 8’ by12’ tiny homes 6 days a week for the homeless using jigs. About 4 homes a week are completed using volunteers (many are first time using power tools).
HEY MIKE! I'm still rolling on this end. I haven't had time to watch much You tube content, and haven't touched on your content in probably 8+ months. I've got some catching up to do! Its all in my queue! I've been building AWESOME over head shelving in my little garage. 70+ linear feet of over head shelving. Lighting gets improved TODAY! I was excited to watch this video. I love your channel! Can't wait to post a crappy 30 second video of the shelves I made. They even are above the roll up garage door. It clears! God bless! Thumbs up!
P.S. I share your content at the Nevada Tesla Giga factory. Lot's of watchers on that end. Your being shared around the world!
Man it’s good to hear from you Joe! It’s been a while, glad all is going well on your end 😊
Honestly sounds like you are spending your time out doing projects rather then on YT. Take care and thanks for sharing my videos man!!!
This is such a cool idea for having a little place to go to get away. Even better to have it on the cheap. Your cabin is WAY overbuilt compared to most trailers!
FESTIVA CRAFTMENSHIP!!!! LOVE THE WHEEL WELL FABRICATION AND STEEL FRAME CLEANUP, GREAT PREPARATION!!! YOUR BOYS GETTIN BIG!!! DONT BLINK!!! LOVE THE SAWMILL HACK GREAT IDEA!!!! GREAT VID THANKS MIKE!!!
Thanks Man! I really appreciate it 😊 Yes my oldest son is getting big fast, crazy how time goes by so quickly.
The trailer was a wonderful gift! In great shape, rust free.
Very smart to combine the sub and finished floor together in one product.
Thanks for checking out my new video 👍 Yes I definitely scored on the free trailer!
Only will have about $400 Into the trailer with new tires, electric brakes and new LED lights, not bad for a good platform to start my build on 😊👍
One of my top ten channels Mike. I always learn something interesting.
Thanks Paul I appreciate it 👍
This is awesome , thanks for sharing Mike. I’m looking forward to seeing more of this project.
I'm a long time subscriber but I didn't even know about this video until I got a notification for part 2
Thanks for checking out my new build series! It seems like YT didn’t get many notifications out on the first video. I’m glad you got notifications on this one 😊👍
Bless Mike, it's going to be a pleasure following you along with this project. Thanks 😊
Thanks 😊 I really appreciate it 👍
The weight bias on that homemade trailer is backwards as is the channel iron but for free with good axles, suspension, wheels, tongue, steel, etc= winnuh winnuh chicken dinnuh !! Great score Mikie!! 👏 👍 👌 ❤
Cabin def sounds better than tiny home. Even better if u don’t give it a cheesy name when you’re done building it 🙂
Haha I usually never name my structures 😂
It might have been better to put that heavy plastic under the 2x3 floor to keep moisture away from the non-pressure treated pine. But a good coat of paint should work too.
I have put a bit of thought into most projects I do, this was planned, I didn’t want to make a mouse nesting area in the floor of my cabin by making them a great place to nest. Out in the woods in the Northwest there’s a lot of mice and they can destroy a building on no time. I also don’t use pressure treated wood unless it’s constantly exposed to water or is in contact with the ground. Pressure treated wood is fairly nasty stuff to work with.
Thanks for checking out my new video.
Another cool project. Thanks Mike for taking us along 👍😊👍
Thanks Joel! I appreciate it.
Have a great weekend 😊👍
That's a cool project. Tell your brother that we miss him. Both of you make great content
Thanks for checking out my new project! I definitely will tell him 😊👍
It looks like this cabin will be a good size… not so cramped like a lot of the teardrop builds you see! Mike I see many a great camping season to come👍
Cool project. Thanks for bringing us along, Mike.
Somehow Mike, you always manage to deliver exactly what I’m in the mood for. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.
Thanks man! I really appreciate it 😊
got some catching up to do, thanks for keeping posting videos Mike. Your my hero
Great to see you here Andris, I'm also a fan of Mike too.
Thanks Ants! I really appreciate it man 😊
Take care buddy 👍
I don't do notifications, but I'll comment all day long.
Thanks 😊
The comments definitely can help, I appreciate it 👍
So excited for this mini build series Mike!
You’re always working on such cool projects. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks man 👍 I appreciate it 😊 I’m working on part 2, should have it up next Friday!
Love seeing more fabrication and building. That’s what first drew me to your channel and is still my favorite content from you, though I still watch all your other stuff.
Thanks for sticking around over the years! I have slowed down on larger Fab projects over the past few years, I really enjoyed them but the larger projects really took away from my family time. I will definitely still do some metal Fab videos but probably nothing quite like the Articulating dump truck.
I do have some metal Fab accessories planned for a machine I purchased recently.
So those should be coming this spring and summer 😊👍
Glad to hear! I totally understand all that and family comes first for sure. I’ll definitely stick around. I enjoy everything you put out.
I wish we had harbour freight in the UK ! Sure we are a small nation compared to the USA but we have a hell of a lot of people here to buy the stuff !
The tools seem to keep getting better and better, I’m surprised there’s not a similar style tool store there in the UK, I think Canada’s version is Princess auto or something like that.
Thanks for watching
'It doesn't get that cold here,' (has four inches of snow.)
Haha 👍 well the snow was gone later that day thankfully.
Most winter days are in the mid 40s.
Thanks for checking out my new video
Great build series! Everyone should have a Walter in their life!!!
Haha definitely 👍 he is a great friend 😊
Glad to see you found another passion project to work on! Always good to hear about what you are up too! Cheers bud
Thanks 👍
Interesting project. But Mike, we recently had those two days in the last 20 years that went down to single digits. LOL
Haha yes but compared to the mid west we have extremely mild winters. I’m installing a diesel heater and possibly at a small wood stove for an alternative heat. Heating a small box this size won’t really take much. Thanks for watching
I'm liking it. Good for ice fishing here in the Northeast too!
I am excited to watch this series. Glad you're making it!
You do a good job Mike, I like watching you started watching you probably three years ago on your little vehicle the bed in the middle
Thanks for checking out my videos! I de appreciate your comment and support 😊👍
I should have part two out next week!
How do you know that the axles are in the correct location to give you the right tongue weight and tracking? Seems like they should be farther back. How did you determine the correct location? Building your own seems like a good idea if you have the time and motivation. You can learn the skills and choose tools that work for you.
There’s a saying, “work with what you got”
Some people may want to spent 2 years on a project like this and do it all from scratch building it from the ground up.
I’m just working with what I got and starting off with an old dual axle camper trailer seems to be a good platform.
I just want to build this small cabin to take to my friends property as a place to stay when I’m visiting for snowboarding and hiking.
Sometimes keeping it simple is best,
I’m on a budget, trying to stay under 5K on this build.
I’m just working within my means to get this done in a few months as I juggle life, family and two jobs.
First off all, appreciate the guidelines you have to confirm before commenting. Block the disrespectful people. Your content is always awesome.
Second: Sucks that here in Germany laws considering trailers suck soo bad. On top of that having a movable house basically melts the system because now the vehicle authorities and the housing authorities both have an interest in your cabin and the only real work around is renting a spot on an official ampground and having your cabin there permanently. But what's the fun in that? German campgrounds suck compared to most campgrounds in the western States or western Canada.
Awesome series, keep it up.
Cheers from Germany
Thanks for checking out my new video 😊
It’s almost opposite over in the states about these mini houses on trailers.
It’s still a trailer so it’s no problem for registration and plates.
There’s really no building codes for a non permanent structure as long as it’s on an axle and can be moved. So they are pretty easy to add on a lot or property without any permitting. I’m definitely looking forward to getting in back to my place and starting on the interior and exterior 😊
Looking forward to this build series. This is something I want to do so good to see another approach before I start. I enjoy the diversity on you channel.
Right on! Thanks for checking out my new video 😊 so far it’s been a fun simple project.
One suggestion, don’t over think it, I have had enough comments already on this video about the trailer axle is not in the right spot or that I should have used pressure treated lumber.
Definitely just work with what you got and build one man 😊
Good luck on your mini cabin!
Lookin good! I kinda wanna see if the mini truck will tow it, just around the house lol
Very cool project!
Wow really cool I can't wait to see how episode two turns out
Thanks 😊 I should have the next video coming out in about a week 👍
Absolutely 💯 awesome
Cool
WTG Mike! This looks like it is going to turn out awesome. Looking forward to the next episode!
Thanks 😊 I really appreciate it! I’m really looking forward to getting it finished and taking it to my friends property for a camping shelter 👍
Have a great weekend!
Get your buddy some Harbor freight 10,000 lumen shop lights. Those T12 bulbs suck. He will give you a big hug Mike.
👍👍
Super cool project, looking forward to seeing it come along
Right on! Should have part 2 up in a few weeks 👍😊
Great video, keep them coming.
Loved the vid!
Thanks Jacob! 😊
nice job
Very similar to how Ice Castle fish houses are made in Minneaota. I was building one of those back in high school, so about 14 years ago now. But could never figure out how to adhere the floor or studs to the steel frame. But I may try to build one again and definitely use this as a reference on how to do it. Originally it was going to be my Junior/Senior/Welding school project, but since I could never really figure it out, I sold the trailer frame to an uncle.
Thanks for checking out my new video 😊
Definitely seems like a good way to go fishing in a warm cabin in the winter. 👍
Very Impressive Mike
that's a neat little project very nice.
Nice!!
Thank you! Cheers! 👍
looks great cant wait to see it all done
Thanks for checking out my new video!
Yes it’s going to be a good little cabin 😊
Mike, it is gonna be very exciting to see how you finish this cabin. As creative as you are; i bet you are gonna maximize the space utilization to the extreme.
Thanks for checking out my new video! Yes I’m really looking forward to getting to work on the interior 😊👍
Great build man coming along nicely 👍🏾. I always learn so much watching your vids. I also wanted to ask how are the Kei Trucks doing👀
I'll be following this build Mike. Thanks for posting it.
Thanks man 👍 should have part two posted in a few weeks 😊
one thing when you do the metal roof ,, do the laps on the roof so that highway speed the wind can't get under the seams and lift the sheets off if backwards the wind could lift all your seams . hope you will have enough tongue weight when done so the trailer don't sway .. the building is looking good , like the cross bracing in the walls ,,
We definitely think alike, definitely considering wind and metal for traveling down the road.
I think I will be adding batteries and some other heavy stuff in a box inside the triangle, that should help with the tongue weight 😊👍
As always great video Mike!
Thanks😊 I really appreciate it Paul 👍
❤❤❤❤❤AWESOME WORK KEEP THEM COMING
Thanks for the support! 👍😊
cool project

Thank you Mike. Good to see you back. Neat project! Looking forward to future videos!
Right on! Thanks for checking out my new video 😊 definitely making some good progress on this mini cabin.
Just got all the metal roofing finished today on it, hopefully I can bring it home soon and start on the exterior siding.
awesome project Mike. keep it coming!
Right on! I should have the metal roof on today if the weather doesn’t get to nasty, I got the cabin outside now and it’s been raining and trying to snow almost every day 😂
Great project Mike! Looking awesome!
Thanks for checking out my new video! Definitely has been a fun simple project so far 👍😊
Great video! Keep up the amazing work!

I hope one day to build a shop on my channel looking good man
I'm looking forward to seeing more. Thanks for the content, my friend.
Thanks for checking out my new video Allan!
I’m definitely looking forward to getting it finished and moving it to the Cascade’s
Nice build. I'm wondering if you should have moved the axles to the rear of the frame a little.
looks like a good project Mike!
Thanks 😊
Great stuff Mike.....you always have good quality
Thanks 😊 I really appreciate it!
Hey Mike. I turned on the notifications for your channel, hope it helps. I enjoy all of you content . Thanks for sharing.
Hi Mike .. this tutorial looks great..❤
Thanks for checking out my new video Fred!
I’ve been checking my phone every 10 minutes for the next Templar video and this is what I get 😭. Good content none the less. I guess I have to wait a little longer. 👍
Haha I’m a man of many interests 😂
A Templar video is in the works, but it’s been raining or snowing almost every day lately so I decided I would get the bike back out once we get a break in the weather. Definitely got some good updates done on it already, they will be included in the next update 👍
@@Mikefestiva just bought a Templar after watching your video on it. It’s been too cold and nasty here to ride so I’ve been getting everything squared away on it how I like it so I’m ready. Really wish I could find a little wider seat.
Do you think you should have used treated sence it is exposed underneath to the road water and weather
Someone didn't watch the video all the way through 🙄
Looking forward to see how this turns out. :)
Thanks for watching! I’m probably installing the metal roofing today 😊 definitely looking forward to getting the roof on because I have it outside now and it’s been raining almost every day. Being dried in will be good!
Cool project Mike! Wonder if you'll gain some more viewers since this seems to be a popular thing to do right now. You scored on that old RV trailer.
Dude! Im collecting materials to build a small "cabin" Ive got an ideal spot on the eastern high corner of my prop. I just this morning finished the trail to get to it.
Fantastic! Keep me posted on your progress 😊👍 I have been thinking of building a little cabin on a trailer for the last few years, I just have been too busy with other building projects. Definitely looking forward to taking this mini cabin to my friends property this Spring!
Mikey 👋 awesome build as always 👏 and hi 👋 from Japan 🇯🇵
Thanks 😊 I really appreciate it! Hello from the Pacific Northwest Washington state 👍
Looks cool. If you have a router you can cut the windows out with a flush trimming bit
I have tried that in the past on 1/2” OSB but found it to make a bit of a mess and seemed to burn the bits. Maybe I will give it a shot again sometime. Thanks for checking out my new video 😊👍
@@Mikefestiva see if you can find a spiral bit that might help with the burning. Nothing will make the mess better lol
Hey this project is looking good!!! I have a channel showing rolling ball sculpture art. When I first started we had good views but then you tube stopped suggesting me or something changed. Anyway I enjoy watching your videos! Hope you can continue 😊!! Mite just be a trend?? Hang in there bro 👍 mt.
Thanks for checking out my new video! Yes unfortunately YT has definitely stopped promoting my channel much, but I will still keep plugging along making videos. I will need to check out your channel 👍
Thanks I love your videos been following you for quite some time being a NW person myself! Why didn’t you cut all your own wood?
As you know I have two sawmills, I do plan to mill all the exterior siding, interior trim and Cedar for the ceiling. Honestly it comes down to time, I have some lumber on hand that’s dry but I don’t have enough stored and dry for this project.
Kiln dried wood is nice to work with and its far cheaper now compared to the cost 2 or 3 years ago. I think I paid about $6 for a 8’ 2x6.
Between working two jobs and balancing family responsibilities it came down to time versus cost. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for checking out my new video 😊👍
I was subscribed, but just noticed that I was no longer, so I re-subscribed.
Thanks Craig, yes unfortunately YT keeps unsubscribing people from my channel! Really frustrating. Thanks for resubscribing 😊👍
Cool project
How tall is it going to be?
I forgot to measure the total height. I will try and include that in the next video 👍
Thanks for checking out my new video 😊
@@Mikefestiva I watch them all, I'll be looking for it. Thanks
Ciao Mike, bel progetto 👍💪 io preferisco vedere le parti di lavorazione a velocità normale, no time laps..... Se il video viene di un'ora e' meglio 😅😊
I appreciate hearing your perspective, unfortunately most of my subscribers and viewers don’t seem to want that long of format videos so I try to make them fit with the majority of viewers. I definitely would like to make longer videos but unfortunately RUclips stats show people just get bored and click off the video.
Thanks for watching my new video 😊
Eh lo so, purtroppo anche io ho dovuto accorciare molto i miei video per lo stesso motivo. I tuoi video sono istruttivi e piacevoli in ogni caso. Grazie per la risposta 👍👌🙏
yOu nO wAt I wOoD hAvE dOnE dIfFeReNt? 😂 looks like a fun build. Those old welds look like something I would have done 😂😂😂 also I would have used a flush trim bit on my router to cut the windows out cause I'm lazy, the bit would be burt out a dull by the end 😅
Haha 👍 I’m sure your welds would be better then that, I think the person probably tried to weld it on with there eyes closed or something? I tried the router technique before but maybe it was me Or the two bits I tried but it didn’t have any luck trying to cut out the windows on a different project without making a mess with sawdust and burning the bits. Maybe I will try it again sometime?
Thanks for checking out my new project 😊👍
At 15:54 Is that your FJ Cruiser?
When will you make another xpro dual sport video?
Probably fairly soon, the weather has been snowing or raining just about every day for the last month, all the trails are mud. I’m in the process of making a video of some upgrades on the Templar 250, just need a few sunny days to get back out on the trails to finish the video off 👍 hopefully in the next few weeks I can get the video finished.
Maybe I missed it. But why did you choose to buy studs vs. milling your own? Cool project! (Signed - your neighbor to the east in Selah, WA.)
Thanks for checking out my new video. It really comes down to Time vs money. Milling your own lumber takes a far amount of time and needs to dry a long time. Kiln dried lumber is really cheap right now and you can build right away. A 2x4 8’ is $3.25
And a 2x6 8’ is only $6.20
I’m trying to get this project finished in a few months so I can start using it and get onto other things.
I do however plan on milling all the Cedar exterior siding, interior trim, ceiling and shelving. Cedar is expensive so I definitely will save a lot on that. I will probably mention this in the next video in more detail 😊👍
@@Mikefestiva I did consider the time/drying aspect; makes sense. Getting close to buying my own mill and my wife will be able to blame you! 😅
Now the real question: Can your mini camper tow it?
i didn't get a notification either and i have the bell clicked.
Thanks for commenting and the support Frank! I had another subscriber mention the same thing, he un-clicked the bell and re-licked it and he said he started getting notifications from my channel again.
Ok I’ll try that.
I am suprized youdidnt paint your floor joists to keep them from weathering.
I just don’t like spending time on things that won’t really matter. They will last for the next 30 years without any problems being just the way they are. I built a cabin 25 years ago and the floor joists are in perfect shape still. If I was parking this mini cabin in a pond then I could see covering them but they will be dry and out of the weather.
Thanks for checking out my new project.
were the 2x6 pressure treated? they will get wet for sure out there .
I built a cabin over 20 years ago without pressure treated wood and it’s still completely solid 👍 I’m not worried about the 2x3” under the floor, probably never tow it in a rain storm, if I do it will dry out again.
Pressure treated lumber is fairly nasty stuff to work with so I avoid it unless something is in contact with the ground.
It’s only got it last another 30 or 40 years, I don’t see myself lasting much longer than that 😊
Thanks for watching.
How is that Vulcan Omnipro 220 holding up? Mine has been 100% solid! OSB sucks in my opinion.
My Vulcan has been great, the one I reviewed years ago was awesome as well, I sold it to buy the ProTig to learn Aluminum welding.
I bought this OmniPro over a year ago on a Black Friday sale. Zero complaints 👍😊
I’m glad to hear you still have yours.
those old welds look like stick welding probably using a car battery or something similar.
Haha 😂 something like that.
Hey Mike, something on your publish settings only lets this video be seen on a youtube app. It won't show on a laptop browser. Can you adjust that? Thanks, appreciate you!
Thanks I have never heard this before, I really don’t this there’s any setting for that but I will look into it??? I feel about a year and a half ago YT just sunk my channel and stopped suggesting it to most of my subscribers. Thanks and I will look into it but unfortunately I really think it’s on RUclipss side of things and they won’t ever respond to my emails 😔
@@Mikefestiva Works on my laptop...
How did you determine how high to build wheel well
I measured how many inches between the axle and frame, than took the measurement and added a few extra inches for clearance, then added the total above the tires to the wheel well frame I welded up.
Also to address the pressure treated wood, this mini cabin won’t be on the road much, the wood shouldn’t have any issues, even if it got wet of the trip over to where I’m parking it at it’s going to dry out. I have built many many cabins and I try not to use pressure treated wood unless it’s something in contact with the ground. Thanks for checking out my video 👍
Thanks
I've heard of booger welds but I believe your chicken poop might be more accurate.
So why did you go back to the omni pro 220?
I always liked the Omni pro, I sold my original Omni to buy a AC TIG welder to learn aluminum welding, I kept my Titanium 200 and ran it for about 3 or four years,
I gave the Titanium 200 to my friend that needed a welder and bought another Omnipro 1.5 years ago because I have always liked the welder.
@@Mikefestiva have you ever looked at the internals of the 220 to see how they are positioned and whether or not the boards have a protective coating on them?
@@nyarnell1 No I haven’t, I would assume there’s probably videos of people taking them apart on YT by now.
I just turn it on and use it. Never had a problem with either one I have owned.
