@@vika0194 but average speed is hella close to top speed and that's crazy

Top speed was 272/3 kph in one of the downhill sections 2:31 but you're right, on the straight it suffered.
An overdrive gear would have seen then smash 6mins easily.
@finlay morrison You think a car that did Pikes Peak, 20kms of hairpins and hill climbing in 7 mins 57 sec hasn't got the battery pack energy density to drive a taller gear reduction ratio or an overdrive to do the Ring in under 6 mins when it's only 5 secs off the mark already?

Although an electric motor has a “sound”, it’s nowhere near as dramatic as an engine spinning up. It’s doesn’t have much tonal range.
I think the music compliments this perfectly, and is at just the right level - adding interest but without overpowering the sounds inside the cabin.
What else is there to hear?! The rumbling V8 sound?

Here it is
Seeing this car top out is humbling shows that there is a lot more to be had from this already amazing time
No, it shows why a transmission is needed. The motor will only spin so fast. After that, there's nothing left. With a 2 or 3 speed, the motor doesn't have to spin a top speed to get up to that velocity, and could possiby do almost TWICE that.
The future is cold and silent

Lithium cells don't like being any hotter than 60 to 70C (140-158F) or you end up with a fireball as the cells hit thermal runaway
The pack was probably being current limited to prevent the pack from going into thermal runaway and exploding by the time it got to Döttinger Höhe.
Kudos though from one of the engineers who worked on the Nio EP9 battery systems, amazing to see such quick progress in high performance electric :)
the car was not build for highspeed. The accu cells have a own electric cooling unit. EP9 have much bigger accus, means much more weight, with more horsepower and higher speed. More weight means slower acceleration, slower apex speed and you must be earlier on the breaks.

@@opus_workshop ...not really. Just when you have a 21km long power cable for the electric car ;-)
Problem is that you can't build accu cells who can store more energy with the same weight. Lithium is the best element for store energy they know at the moment. Thats the big problem, more energy or longer distance means more weight and slower car.
First you must find a new chemical element on the planet that will store more energy like Lithium.
A 500kg litihum accu have the same energy like ca. 40kg fuel.

Mugoba yep, where they put it on the track. No chance for two laps.
I think heat is a real issue with battery performance. Same as a tesla, first max speed run is higher than the second if you don’t left the batteries cool
Once superconductor are optimized and shrunken down to be portable these cars will be very plausible. It's still impressive how far they have come with electric performance so far.
I noticed it too... In the beginning the max speed reached 272km... But that long straight near the end the max speed was only around 245km...
I don't know what happened...
can anyone explain it???
@@shintapeterson10 Heat or charge inside the battery. If the battery is too hot it has to output less current or it will damage itself. Or it could be that the battery had already lost too much charge, then the output voltage lowers aswell, a higher charge capacity would mean more weight and that's probably why they didn't used it.
Probably a mix of both isues
The speed that thing goes through the bends is crazy
Wow amazing stuff well done team VW
Amazing lap, time to be found on the straights!
Looks like a lot of potential for better time in the future as max speed is 260kph only.
definitely. current battery technology is the limiting factor right now. but thats a very very active area of research.
@@PelycheeaceRA Batteries are, even as much as we've advanced, pretty damned abysmal yeah.
The main issue is coming up with a reaction that both stores a good charge difference and can charge/discharge quickly, without being incredibly volatile in the process. You short an alkaline, it'll just burst and make a mess, you short a nickle, you'll get magic smoke, you short a Li-Po you get flames.
@@DFX2KX battery development is complicated and quite unpredictable throughout.
you might come up with a promising electrochemical system, run computer simulations that show good results, but once you build your prototype almost nothing happens. turns out that during discharge, the metal doesnt deposit on the electrode in neat layers, but forms a weird moss-like structure that inhibits ion transport.
i also remember my lecturer talking about a case where reaction products would form shells around metal particles, leading to unexpectedly steep gradients in pH-value in the reaction zone.
its as frustrating as it is fascinating.
I think it's due to the gearing on the IDR set for acceleration and not top speed. The rimac concept one used a 2 speed gearbox to have essentially the best of both worlds. The IDR will probably need something similar.
It's really wonderful how the motorsport industry changed. That car, apart from its incredible aesthetics, was taken advantage of 100% by its pilot. Simply amazing.

Ragnotti used 110% of the renault williams rally cars
Colin mc Rae with his subaru
Marquez uses 100% of his honda
Rea 100% of his kawasaki
Every some time, some driver uses or has used 100% of what his vehicle could give.
Ever since racing existed.
and how do you know this was at 100%?? to know what's 100%, you need to go over it once, something Marquez does on purpose in training... so he knows in race and qualify whats 100% at that track with that bike with that weather

those lines though...such beauty to watch
165mph down the straight? Hold my gear.
Battery must have died off it went from doing 272 kph to 242kph what happened there?
If it's anything like the RC cars I used to race, it could either be introduced by heat in the motors, or more likely, a battery saving feature. Heat robs electric motors of power, and a lot of it. Without knowing the battery technology in the car off hand, it could go either way. I do know that with Hybrid racing cars, if you lose that battery power, you lose your acceleration power. Stands to reason it's a battery saving feature intended for longer runs. Notice it was able to hit 260kph after heavy braking which is regenerative on most hybrids and electric cars.
I see electric cars more as 1:1 scale RC vehicles - They use the same concepts and principles, just different technologies and larger parts. If you found a 1:10 scale VW ID.R RC car, 27kph would be the correct scale speed. Though, who wants an RC that does 27kph? 160kph is where it's at. (Rough estimating, I'm from the US so my speed conversion is a little off-center from what it should be; the Traxxas XO-1 RC is capable of 100mph out of the box with option components; I believe a 6s LiPo battery and a massive brushless electric motor and highly durable Electronic Speed Controller to match the car's size and power; the XO-1 is actually roughly 1:7.5 scale.

Imagine the absolutely insane time this could get if something was done about that low top speed. It'd destroy everything else.
Maybe some "more" hydraulic Aero losing some downforce on the long straight - I do not know much about this car so I can't say how adaptable the aero is.
But it was doing more like 253 Km/H on a part on the first section, so perhaps the batteries was somewhat drained at then end straight - idk?.
But darn the corners speeds are nuts.
By its cornering speeds it would have been on par with the 919 evo if its top speed had been better in straights (I mean, way better) ... Still, beating Bellof's record without even crossing 275 kph is a huge performance
