    When it comes to the "pack-hunting Megs", I haven't read all of the books in the Meg series, but from the ones that I have read, if I recall correctly that behavior is present in the books. In the first book, the female Meg displays very typical shark social behavior when it comes to interacting with its own kind: immediately after they are born, Angel (the daughter of the female Meg that I mentioned in my comments on your reaction to the first film, but I don't know if any of the Megs shown in this trailer are meant to be Angel herself) and her siblings are on their own (their mother (spoiler alert) even kills a couple of her babies herself because she feels they're too weak to survive on their own in the wild). But in later books when Angel has children of her own, I believe she actually changes her behavioral patterns. If I recall correctly, Angel is VERY protective of her offspring, and they actually live and hunt as a family group/pack (although one of her sons proves to be kind of a bully towards his siblings and Angel has to get really strict with him at times).

      @SuperDraconas Год назад +12

      Angel's mother ate those two siblings because they hovered around for too long, and she was hungry after having just given birth. Angel herself never displayed any parental instincts towards her kids, and would have eaten them had Jonas and the Tanaka Institute not separated them immediately after birth inside the Tanaka Whale Lagoon. As for the descendants of Angel, aka her kids, Mary Kate and Ashley were social to the point they could tolerate each other, but the real stars of social cooperation and pack hunting were Bela and Lizzy. Bela, being the only offspring not born of parthenogenesis (her lead grey coloration on her back leads credence towards a male great white being her father), was the muscle to Lizzy's brains, and the two would actively coordinate during a hunt to ensure increased chances of success. This was shown in Nightstalkers.

      Yes, and I loved the way Bella and Lizzie swam together. Lizzie in the top/lead position and Bella just behind riding her wake. And if I remember correctly, Bella and Lizzie had pups and they were very protective of their pups. And a pair of those pups displayed the same swimming behavior as their parents, except that the grey backed shark was in the lead position instead of the white shark.
      Also, I’m not sure that a great white was Bela father. Angel was recaptured while mating with her son from her previous litter. Angel killed him because the doors to the tanaka institute were closed behind them and he couldn’t get away from Angel. So most likely Bela is the daughter of that mating.

    I’m not marine biologist or an expert in ocean/aquatic animals, but what I do know is that the red megladon hunt in packs, maybe it’s that particular species? However there nowhere near 58 feet, I think those are 40-48 feet according to what I read on study of megladon. Very interesting

    Would these sharks technically even be Megs? I mean they've had an additional -sixty-five- twenty million years worth of evolving (perhaps explaining their incredible size, additional gills etc), so would they now be considered a new species?

    Dr. Munroe! I enjoyed your take on this! I am a little surprised that you didn't say anything about Jason preventing a full-on chomp-down with his legs!! When he is trying to get to shore before the shark breaks the pier the shark is about to bite down on him but he "blocks" the chomp with his legs (4:33)!! Also, the end shot with the shark coming up for the boat... they did a shot like that in the American TV show "Surface." I wonder if you've seen that and/or are willing to react to it?

    • @arthurcamargo8416

      @@MuertaNox LOL! I remember it now... If I recall correctly, he kicks his leg up to (very clearly) stop the momentum of the "snout" from coming down, while on a broken piece of pier in the ocean! That is like using your foot to deflect a car falling on you while you are on a pool floatie in the middle of a pool, but your only deflecting the "bumper" not the car so that works and you don't go in the water, right? I just think the movie is going to be so fun seeing how they utilize Jason's skillset to escape the maw of this super megalodon! Should be fun!! FTR: Jason does not skip leg day, since even a regular megalodon could generate 40,000 pounds per square inch, or 13 Honda Civics falling on him at the same time! (All in fun/physics is phun!)

    With regard to pack hunting, aren't there also the pseudo-pack hunting behaviors with larger targets. Where it's more of a thing where they're cooperating due to the larger prey that they'd be risking a lot more trying for while solo but they aren't actually a pack as it were. Mainly something with certain sharks going after whales or other large targets.
    I know that's also something that is described as a potential thing for various dinosaurs as well, Allosaurus for example with them gathering to be able to take on the larger sauropods that would be migrating through the area.

    Fun Fact:
    The prehistoric prologue in *"MEG 2: The Trench"* was from Steve Alten's 1997 novel: *"MEG: A Novel of Terror",* though the T. rex - described as standing twenty-two feet tall - was hunting a pair of large duck-billed hadrosaurs called Shantungosaurus - described to be more than forty feet long - that strayed from the herd, before it got eaten by the Megalodon.

    Here’s a fun fact. Great White sharks aren’t true apex predators. The Killer whale/Orca is a true apex predator and they love the livers of great white sharks. I remember seeing a special dealing with gw sharks and orcas. They were able to electronically tag a great white and tracked its movements. There was a shark they were tracking in feeding grounds off the coast of Florida until a pod of orcas entered the area. They were hunting great whites and was tracking the shark. The shark made a sharp turn towards open waters and dropped off the continental shelf. They lost the signal for 2 weeks or so and the next time they pinged his signal it was off the coast of Madagascar.
