There are two main reasons why restaurants close between 3 and 7 PM:
1 - The restaurant staff usually eat after service and they also need a break after serving lunch.
2 - People in Portugal use restaurants for lunch and dinner, so there's no need for them to be open during those hours and people rarely have a restaurant-type of meal in the afternoon.

I'm portuguese and I'd like to give some more info about the appointment and ponctuality: we do value it, when it comes to stuff that is more like in groups (such as wedding, parties, hangouts. In school it's also important obviously). The appointment at a comoany and doctor's office is... Yeah. That's because patients are booked based on what the doctor thinks how much time it'll take for the patient that comes before so if it takes longer you'll need to wait but if it takes less time you can go in early (or if you're not there yet they'll take in another patient and you'll have to wait to go after the person that was supposed to go after you). Restaurant reservations can be tricky because of that, you never know how long a group will take. In fact, in many restaurants they only make a certain number of reservations or only make them until a xertain hour because one thing us portuguese love (that fits into the slow pace of life) is to stretch the friend meetings and lunches: we can get to a restaurant at like 12:40 and we'll leave way past 3pm even when the last 50 minutes were just talking while the coffee gets cold.
Also the eating late is because we usually have a little snack between lunch and dinner, a sandwich, fruit or a pastry.
That little snore-growlie noise is the same one she makes when it's time to go sleep at night! So cute! 🥰

If you want to have a full meal in the afternoon when restaurants are closed you can have it in a Pastelaria or Snack-Bar. They always have soup, a special of the day (this can be in a mini formatand several deserts. Most of them will also have a 'Bitoque' that consists in a small steak, fries, rice and an optional egg. Pastelarias and Snack-bars are all over the place. They are much more common than restaurants.
that's the same as in Italy, I never ate so many pastries in my whole life than my vacation to Italy lol
Hi Nessa - I love Portugal; congrats on your move! Question - when you travelled with Sophie, did you bring her crate with you? I have a 3 month old pup and am planning on travelling with her as I go to the Caribbean to visit my mom every year for at least 2 weeks. Not sure if I should bring her crate or have her sleep in her travel carrier. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for your question, I actually bought Sophie a crate for her here in Portugal. We still have her old one back home but the crate is a non-negotiable for us so I had to invest in one for here. I don't know how well your pup does in her travel carrier but it's always something you can test out at home to see if she would be ok spending the nights in there (plus it's great training) and if you find that it's not the best option for her, you can always invest in a crate to keep at your mom's (if she's ok with the storing of it).

What part of Canada did you come from? We're thinking about relocating from Southern Ontario to Northern Portugal in a couple of years. Just curious.
It is nearly impossible to move to Portugal at this time since visas are not being processed. There is a tremendous backlog and there have been demonstrations in major cities in Portugal to increase restrictions on foreigners moving to Portugal. The golden visa has already been discontinued in major areas. Also the NHR tax is being discontinued for new foreigners coming in as of 2024 and the taxation here is high.

I will be kind enough to answer this question since it wasn’t answered by the channel owner. They love dogs and Portuguese will always greet your dog on the street. You can take it on the train, but not into stores or restaurants, only on patios. Some few food joints will be allowing dogs but it’s rare.
I am a Chinese who also lives in Europe, so I don't remember how I had this observation but I think it is true, the globalization since years ago has really made most of the nations being less different, however in each country, people are becoming more atomic, and what's more, types of subculture are really thriving as a trend...so if someone who goes for traveling abroad, hopes to experience something authentic, something different there, would probably have had the same surprise by merely joining a local club, let's a Anime Fan Club etc in their own town
Would you have felt safer in Canada if you had lived in a smaller city?
I love this question! I honestly don't know, we've moved a few times and some areas are better than others but being in the Toronto area means that there's just times of the day and places that I avoid just cause of things you here happening on the news.
Speaking of local languages of a country, I have met quite a few guys from my own country, who speak very little foreign languages, brag about how a translating device helps their communications easily and magically...then so to claim that learning the local languages would be less important as the technology has already proven itself
A moment after hearing this, It came to myself a analogy: a person who pays for a painting obviously can't have the bliss of creation that made the painting come true, so how can a tiny translating make yourself so happy about
But since I am a gentleman for most of the times, so I didn't speak out what I really had in my mind, instead, I praised his tiny machine super fancy...😂

By law you should pick it up.
In Canada, there are many people lately who don’t pick up the poop. It’s really ugly.
