I never thought I'd see the day, but it seems like Microsoft Edge, the default browser in Windows 10, actually does have the best security, even better than Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. And now Microsoft has released a new extension for Chrome called the "Windows Defender Browser Extension" that gives you the same protection as Edge, except in Google Chrome. Based on how well Edge handles protection against phishing and malware, I think it's worth getting.

The statistics are a bit old. Firefox uses the same threat detection system as Chrome so in theory they should get exactly the same result
Ain’t discord.
It doesn't need to be Discord, it's called Unicode, all though just use the emojipedia
didn't expect you here
Damn I'm popular haha
who woulda thought 🤔
ThioJoe me
You should have said this video is sponsored by Microsoft lol.
They claim Microsoft Edge is protected by the Windows Scam, but it's not, when I was using it to find a picture, it gave me the "This computer might have a Virus" indicator and it also happened to my mother as well even though she claims she never uses Microsoft Edge
What about performance? Does it slow down chrome significantly or not? You should've answered this in your video as well. But the video still was very awesome as always!
Microsoft, because now they can spy on your browsing nomater which browser
How can they compare this, they are using one of the latest versions of edge while they use old versions of Chrome and they are not even using Firefox Quantum....
More like Firefox quarantine
This comment makes alot of sense.
I've been using Edge more and more, slowly reducing my Chrome usage, and it's actually gotten really good. It definitely feels faster than Chrome. The main driver was actually just to reduce my reliance on Google's services, but Edge has surprised me.
Edge was fast and secure enough from day 1 and it has evolved into a feature full browser and added extensions support since then. Stuff like "set tabs aside" genuinely changed the way I surf the web!
Ok I will get this.
finally got that heart.
he makes real videos now tho

Firefox used was version 55? That one is one year old. Also it is not the FF Quantum... sounds PHISHY
And Chrome was version 60, that threw me way the hell off.
The results seem kinda fishy to me considering other claims from microsoft saying that edge is faster and consumes way less battery that others which has been proven wrong in the past
edge is actually "fast"er in some sites than chrome..and has less cpu footprint so more battery life
these are not microsoft numbers
I prefer Internet Explorer
Me too
i prefer netscape navigator
I use mosaic browser.
I use WorldWideWeb
ye ok
Thanks for uploading this on my birthday :)
SZ_CFC7 Fortnite happy Birthday
David if he's using RUclips on his birthday, you can guess.
I've used Edge almost exclusively since the launch of Windows 10. I have NEVER gotten a virus on my computer (to my knowledge), and all I use is the built-in Windows Defender AV. I run routine backups (online and to a NAS), and have no problems with the idea of possibly needing to reinstall my computer if something bad did destroy everything. Perhaps I'm an edge case though.
Am I the only one that likes Edge
AusDaes Yes. Unless you count people who are naive and don't know any better, MS fanboys, or idiots. Then you are in good company.
I like it too. I've been using it since extensions had been introduced to the browser.
+AusDaes
It works better than Chrome with a touchscreen.
I use both chrome and edge, it's really good.
The thing is that obviously I only want my browser to search/download things and watch videos, so there is no reason at all for me to use another browser
I use both Edge and Chrome, though I tend to use Edge more often whereas Chrome is more specific to what I'm using it for because there are extensions that help enhance what I'm doing. I'm not sure why everyone hates on Edge really. It's a very stable browser with little to no performance difference in my experience to Chrome. I've not really had any security issues with Edge and definitely plan to install the Chrome extension next time I open it up. I would like to see this test done comparing Chrome with and without the extension as well as Edge to see if the safety standards are truly the same though, just for my own curiosity.
Thanks for heads up ThioJoe , much appreciated , love your vids , keep up the great work bud !!!

Good job on the video Theo!
Did anyone else notice the study they are still showing is about 6 months old? This was 5 major updates for Chrome, 4 for Firefox and 1 for Edge ago; a lot has changed within this time.
True you need an updated study, especially with Firefox quantum out. A study like this needs to be released at least every few months to see if things have changed or not. For all I know a simple update to a browser could make it sink right to bottom in security if its a bugged update.
Is it available for Firefox?
I switched to Firefox after the Quantum update.
TechnicJelle me too. I think they'll make that too
You can use a firefox extension to run chrome extension on firefox
Extensception!
Ok I just tried it and it seems to work!
(I am still hoping for an official, less hacky, way, of course.)
Firefix quantum leaks memory. Stopped using it. I switch between chrome and edge often.
Can I get the TOR extension for chrome too? 🤔
Pretty sure there is one, but it requires some manual configuring
as soon as you have connected to the onion network your connection should be encrypted no? as in like, unless yiu are getting key logged they can't really see what you are doing anymore?
but you I would personally just stick to the browser itself
John Doe not really, since you can still use it like a proxy and it's still aafer than no tor
Um if you want to do that and there is a way I wouldn't use Chrome. Maybe Chromium
@Dildacorn Chrome and Chromium are the same thing.
I've been using Edge with windows defender for my last 4 builds and its been rock solid.
"That actually extremely suck.. surprising to me" can't unhear :D
I assume they collect a lot of data, eh?
Windows operating system continually collects and transmits data, which parallels Malware behavior. But the Windows Defender program has never been mentioned as being duplicitous.
My thoughts exactly
+Samuel Kaiser
So does Chrome. On the other hand, you can use Chromium, which is an open source fork of Chrome that has much of Google's spyware removed.
I'd prefer my data being shared with Microsoft instead of some Chinese Hacker running phishing sites.
Of course, it's Microsoft. They're trying to get the same tracking data from chrome users. Just think about it, after windows 10 can you really trust Microsoft?
I use Firefox because Chrome is going really slow. Firefox is very fast in both windows and Ubuntu.. (Btw is that extention avaliable on chrome in linux?)
chromium?
Samster Birdies you can get official chrome for Linux. Chromium is the open source version.
Chromium > Chrome
I have exactly the opposite experience. Chrome for me works a lot faster and snappier. Firefox is very sluggish and I've got a 16-core CPU + 32 GB RAM.
bgtubber lol! X'D
Never thought I would be installing an Edge extension on chrome
is it only me that downloaded the file right away from the moment ThioJoe started speaking? or you also did? good for us haha XD
Paid advertisement
You have to consider what Microsoft has to gain from this browser extension. They have to be taking user data from chrome users. It just makes sense.
eh good tradeoff lol
The problem with that protection is that it means Edge protection is probably blocking even sites that isn't really problematic, which means it gets higher protection because it blocks more sites than the others.
MS Edge is a great browser with built in features that I tend to use such as the Read Aloud and Screenshot features. It helps to make the browser more convenient as I don't have to waste time to install different extensions just to get the functionality like Chrome.
when i first clicked the video i thought it was a very late april fools joke!
Great job bro
I really enjoy using Edge as my default web browser, nice to see besides a good experience to see the protection is done so well compared to the other browsers.
As a LONG-time Chrome user, I can say this is my favorite video of yours. A "revelation".
I like windows 10 but I use chrome.
so do 57% of internet users
I use Firefox and windows 10
Pale Moon FTW
Same. I couldn't unpin edge from my taskbar soon enough, and yet it still kept badgering me for a few weeks asking if I was sure I wanted chrome as my default browser instead of it. I added this extension after watching the video because I guess now we can have the best of both worlds. Aesthetics of chrome and security of edge.
i use the edge and didn't download the chrome yet , so far doesn't look like its needed
I smell bull poop
Looks too good I would take this with a truck of salt
Thanks a lot for all your videos Joe! They were really helpfull and I have learned a lot thanks to you! Keep them up please.
Thank you for this. I'm too time constrained to watch the whole video but since you're an epic youtuber I'll share it for ya :)
Never clicked so fast.
hahaha yeah get the extension and then microsoft will monitor your browsing history, site or may use super cookies to inject ads because all the data flow will be happening through that extinsion
Google Monitors you. Microsoft is your problem? :)
Would not have known, lots of little surprises and presentations on this channel 👍
It's high time ThioJoe got back to trolling us with videos like this. I like it.
Great effort. Thank you
Boy. Just in time
I really likes this kind of video as well as this kind of demonstration and it looks very, very GOOD.
MS are doing some good moves creeping into all areas of my life at the moment. I just switched to Groove music, plus Cortana, plus oneDrive on my PC+Android so I can play my music, and command it to play via voice, on my Windows PC, Android phone, Alexa (need Amazon Music app on the PC too reading the same music folder), and cast to Chromecast. Best of all already have 1TB of OneDrive with MSOffice).
very nice video my friend
Should have tested Safari too.
lmao sicc joke
skatcat743 It's a default browser on a major OS....
As if the vast majority of mac users didn't switch to chrome within a week of purchasing their product...
August Celine III also most windows users do that but the people who need protection the most don't.
I use Edge since more than one year ago, because when I opened the Firefox and it loads the pages my PC was crashed all the time. I'm also an Insider and the Edge is getting faster with every little update. Also I like that the Edge can read, what I use when I have to read a long text, because then I can relax and must not read it myself.
I highly doubt Firefox was the problem about your pc crashing. I've used the newest versions of FF for the past 3 years straight on a athlon x2 6400 ( 10 year old + cpu btw) 8800gt and with Windows 8.1 on that pc and never had a problem with it.
If I had to take a rough guess of the cause of the problem you claimed.....it would include " your pc was infected with a virus or malware" or " you had a bunch of stupid toolbars you downloaded and installed into FF and/or a bunch of extensions and some of which were poorly coded " or " you were trying to do way too much on your PC at once versus what the hardware was capable of and not only was your RAM consumption maxed out, the paging file was maxed out also.
Or your FF browser itself was infected , which can happen.
When troubleshooting..always simplify things as much as possible. uninstalled the , assumed, culprit sofware and redownload a fresh installation and insure you don't install any plugins/extension/addons. Just start with bone stock FF, then ctrl shift esc and monitor and log the RAM consumption.
That crashing could also have been the result of a damn system defense software ( like Windows Defender or Malwarebytes) doing a system scan in the background AND if you have a crappy cpu ( like an old amd or old intel core 2100, 3100, 4100, or 2200, 3200, 4200..the same shit they put in a lot of cheap prebuilts at bEst buy years ago for example or the 300.00 AIo desktop that Walfart sells with a very shitty lowest end amd apu in it), that's enough to max out cpu usage to the point of Windows crashing.
I’m glad that I recently started using Edge on my Surface Pro 4 when I first heard of Sets, and I try to use Edge on my Desktop (it’s going ok, chrome is still faster). Edge ain’t bad. It’s simple, the dark mode = ❤️ and it’s (pretty) fast !
What about privacy? It says it can read all of my browsing history. You know anything about that?
If you're really concerned about history privacy, just turn it off in settings so it's not stored.
Jop V. It makes no sense that they're worried about it. The browser and everything reads their history lmao
Except that I already have history turned off? but i'm still concerned with the extension?
HypotheticalPizza If there's no history then there's no history for it to read. What else are you concerned about?
+Dreamer In Time Even if you turn off your Chrome history, the extension could still record the websites you visit and send it to Microsoft. Your comment has no point.
Hmmm. I wonder how much this software spies on you for Microsoft?
Every URL you go to is transmitted to Microsoft and checked with their malware database, as a service to you.
So they got it, but it is not necessary for M$ to "save" all of your browsing history. But since there is no transparency, then who knows what really goes on with such valuable data.
Your ISP also potentially could save your browsing activity. There are laws against ISPs looking at your internet activity -- they're not supposed to do more than just provide a connection, but no one cares about consumer protection laws anymore.
Yes dear, that's y I m using Edge browser. Previously, it just sucks, but now a days, Edge performance increased and I love it
Thanks for showing us what you found on another website.
This Windows Defender Browser Protection Chrome Extension is just another reason to never use Edge.
I think microsoft realized that no one really likes edge so they started looking for ways to leach into other browsers. This is probably all part of their plan.
It's just a phrase, because now Microsoft can have a presence in the most popular browser whereas before they were cut off completely.
I run Linux.
I really don't think malware is gonna a big problem for me.
Same 😂
Your thinking is wrong. It could potentially harm your data. (/home directory)
semiRockethr is right. While a system compromise would be hard if your not a moron that gives out their password to every prompt, something could easily corrupt every file your account has ownership of on the system. But still, the initial infection to corrupt your files would be hard, but not impossible.
I also use Linux and it doesn't matter malware's can still stole data from your browser like password and accounts
My Computer: We have some free RAM
Google Chrome: Delicious
I hope they'll make it for Firefox too. I like it when my web browser doesn't constantly eat every bit of RAM
What's the privacy policy like though? They may well be using it to collect data on users browsing habits.
I don't know. The privacy policy is 40,000 words long.
Oh, you own a smartphone? You have a hell of a lot more to worry about then.
Paper Bag Man Yes, but the less people have my data the better. So I'd rather Microsoft not also have it.
The amount of data Microsoft would collect is a tiny ant hill compared to the mountain of data your smartphone already collects, what are you talking about? Lol.
Paper Bag Man then you are using your smartphone wrong. If you are smart only your manufacturer can really get more than your Metadata and what you give them. Roms can limit this even further.
Edge is so locked down it's unusable in my experience. That's how it gets such good scores.
it's good now
Joe you started using that extension back in April so how has it been for you? I have not tried it yet but I am wondring if it may be overly cautious. Does it give a warning on any sites that you know are ok? Does it slow your browser down? I use Chrome.
Never use closed source/proprietary browsers and addons/extensions cuz no one can audit the source code and confirm its safe so all you have is your trust in company/developers behind it.
No one seems to care about poor Firefox. I like it way better than chrome.
Tony K yea great in leaking memory and slow browsing.
i use firefox for the vertical tabs xd
I have 16gb ram and gigabit ethernet so its not that bad for me since my school made me download a web monitoring extension for chrome
Firefox has the best extensions.
Tony K yeah. That's why I use it.
Awesome
I use Opera with the install chrome extensions extension. Just added, Opera is based on chrome but has a much better ad blocker built in.
Thanks ThioJoe! Very helpful and usable!
Is this a late Aprilfools joke?
K- MDN no
Windows Defender has come a long way
can give almost every anti-virus a run for their money nowadays
I think Thio is a joke.
Royston Clark he's clean now these facts are legit
K- MDN Your birth was an April fool's joke
It asks for a permission to read browsing history. They failed with edge, everyone uses chrome/firefox and hey couldn't get to enough data. What did they do? Made an extension for chrome to spy on us.
Aleksandar Momic LoL if you think chrome isn’t spying on you then lmao
SoosUnknown "Thing A is spying on me, so just add thing B to spy on me for another company as well"
SoosUnknown Yeah it is. But it's one company. Adding this extension just adds another company to collect data.
FluentPC They collect yes. But how will it protect me from my previously visited websites found in history? They don't need that permission to work, only to spy.
If you don't know, that's how anti viruses work!
Edge seems like the tool that Microsoft has underestimated the potential of, and I am glad that they are finally taking advantage of its build.
Don't rely on browser extensions though. Lease a top shelf AV like Malwarebytes, Bitdefender or Avira.
Wtf Microsoft
Think it is just another piece of spyware
Hassan Tofaili If you already use Chrome it's not that much of a problem.
I love Chrome even though ir probably spies on me. But I don't care
Hi ThioJoe - Great video! it is always great to watch your videos and learn better ways to protect myself from cyber threats. Keep up the great content.
Been using Edge for a while and I love it!
Taha K. It's great but the buggy ui is way too much for me.
1st like
First!
As always I love your videos. I am edge user and I like it a lot. They have made it lot better. I have made it my default browser in one and other computer I didn't even install crome.
I actually like edge. I switched to edge after using nothing but Chrome for years. After I learned that Chrome wouldn't run Netflix in 1080p I used edge for my Netflix viewing. Then I realized how fast edge was with the web in general. Yeah Chrome has more features, but edge does everything that I need.
How much did Microsoft pay you to make this video?
a dog Not anymore. He's doing legit videos for a while now.
I Am Retarded yes he's legit
a dog Nope
a dog He's legit now. He quit satire a year ago
How can we trust him?
Chrome? Yuck! Firefox Quantum all the way!
Firefox Quantum! The Social Justice browser!
Not really, just the SJW company making it
I normally use Edge, and for the most part, it is pretty secure. It really has improved a lot since I've started using it though. Back in 2015, I randomly thought it would be a great idea to trust a phishing site (I had a brain malfunction, OK?!) Edge didn't detect it, and my instinct was my safety net in that case, but it was literally right before I typed the last few characters of my password. It seems Edge is now doing a better job at detecting phishing sites/malware now.
I am DEFINITELY going to install edge, thanks thio
Sponsored by *Microsoft*
no this actually legit
Read up on Windows Defender please before making bias statements
vipul meena IKR? The dead-eyed expression in this video made me wonder if there's someone off-camera aiming a gun at his head.
Edges sucks. It can't even run on my Linux machine.
I've been using Edge for a long time. But people hate it so much for no particular reasons that no one actually went ahead to see how good Edge is. Chrome is really the new internet explorer.
I am a fan of windows 10 even if it has lots of bugs AND I used to be an Insider, but I'll always use chrome. Now, I can have the best security layer microsoft has to offer AND stick with my favorite browser without having to complain at all. THANK YOU JOE!
i finaly made the decission recently to switch to chrome and boy i wish i did it sooner the main key factor of the reson i dident was the fact i had all my favorites on edge but was able to export them
Don't Lie, you should use Internet Explorer extension on Microsoft edge.
Got the extension as soon as i saw your tweet! xD
This is a cool extension tnx for the Video advice Tj.
First of all, smartscreen and safebrowsing API are the programs that are used to detect
Adultcontent from all Sorts of media. Not some kind of malicious Website Tracking Services.
Wife's birthday today. Thanks for making it special
I started the 10 days of using edge challenge 2 days ago, now i'm using chrome but i gotta say edge is't bad really but there's that level of polish you see in chrome that is missing in edge.
Of coarse Edge is going to be top dog. It 's the malware sending your every move to Microsoft.
As opposed to malware sending your every move to Google.
I agree that Google is also stealing peoples privacy as well. The whole data collection privacy issue needs to come to a stop. After all it’s a matter of time before these date pirates get hacked and every ones Info is up for grabs. It’s happened before and it will happen again. If Equifax can’t keep peoples most sensitive info locked down, well you know were I’m going with this.
This is back with the prank videos
I think edge is the android of browsers. It is actually much better that the majority of people think, so people just assume chrome is the best. Also, people choose chrome because of it's ecosystem and the fact that it's settings and history transfer between devices
They protect that well because 99% of the internet doesn't work right in edge lol
so for what can i use this extension? what if i go on site with pop-ups that have virus or malware will this extension help me ?
i apologize for this being off topic. i know you can’t install anything older than windows 10 on newer computers. could you install sa windows 7 on an older model of the same brand of computer and then transplant the drive into the newer model? i have been upgrading my computers like that for decades. i would do it myself, but i don’t have an older model of my computer to do it on.
I'm using the New Edge that just came out and it reminds me of Google Chrome Browser, but without the customization I like in Chrome.
You mean came out 1 year ago right.
Some people must have a search history that even puts mine to shame.
These tests should also say how many non-malicious sites were blocked. I can make a 100% safe browser that will literally block everything.
