Rule 11: Don't throw away a working electronic, I guarantee someone else can use it.
I usually collect "old" electronics from my classmates and give 'em a second life. So much useful free stuff
Sell them.
That's what I do
my friend's grandma thew away a really nice laptop because it had a virus
I actually got an old TV that someone put near the dumpster. It was raining that day but the TV still worked.
You are right.
The people on the forum 5 years ago who fixed it, but only wrote "never mind I fixed it" without saying how *_ARE ABSOLUTELY THE WORST_*
agree
mjc0961 I haven't seen truer words yet. Thank you.
Lmao
I suspect that might be because they don't actually know how they did it themselves. Like button-mashers in a fighting game, they get lucky. Personally, when trying to fix something I document every step (still have my notes on how to disable the ransomware that got me a couple years ago), but most people don't operate that way -- They just muck around in half a dozen different areas, notice that _something_ worked, shrug and never even question it...

#9 Yes I worked for one of the big computer companies (not supposed to say which) as tech support for a little over 2.5 years, and was a top performer and able to fix most problems. We used Google to fix things we couldn't figure out all the time. Glad to hear that everyone does it. Oh and performance issues 95% of the time are programs bogging the system down. The other 5% is due to the hard drive failing (or memory but that causes performance issues more rarely - other hardware is really rare for this).
google is like our #1 friend and #1 enemey at the same time ngl.

If you're told to clean your computer NEVER use soap and water no matter what Wiki says.
You can use water as long as it’s deionised.
u can use water with soap and your computer fine
how: cause the pc is waterproof
funny haha
If you unplug the computer and let it dry VERY thoroughly before returning power it's not that dangerous. Source: have cleaned arduinos and raspberry pi boards with water easily 40 times with no issue. Don't do this with something like a desktop PC though.

In first person shooters, it makes you gun shots twice as powerful for 20 seconds. Hidden cheat code :P
WebMinion yep. Don’t let too many know the secret though
I hate how people think their computer gets slower over time - old hardware doesn't get slower, new software (and junkware the user doesn't need) requires more power.
actually very untrue, if you have a spinning drive the degradation of it happens over time and it gets slower and slower, even components can weaken over time, yes alot of it is software but not always how it is
Oh I didn't know that.. I figured hard dives get slower over time but I didn't think it would be that noticable.
spinning drives get slower and slower over time, SSD's have a number of reads and writes and then it becomes unreliable
true, but it's annoying when software that requires more power is forced down your throat and you can't downgrade back.. *cough* iOS *cough*.

I worked in Tech Support. One day a user called me. "I was working on a file, but it is lost." "What is the file name?" "I don't remember." "Where is the file located?" "I'm not sure." "How do you know the file is lost?"😁 PS. I logged into her system, and located the file in their files list.
Number 11: Always enable Two-Step Factor Authentication when asked. Like Google or Apple or whatever
That goes hand in hand with unique passwords, I would also make sure you use a third party authenticator and not use SMS 2FA as well.

You're the best, Thio Joe. You are well-spoken, easy to understand and you know what you're talking about. There's other RUclips channels who may help a little, but the characters who do the videos are goofy, not likeable and sometimes they are way too biased (non-objective). Thanks for being so helpful.
Really good tips. You're so right about the error messages. I've fixed tons of problems by Googling about the error. As an older user, I can totally agree about "No One Cares"! So many of my friends throw up their hands and complain about whatever their problem is...they refuse to try to fix it themselves...Love your videos!!! ;)
Be cautious about clicking on anything in an e-mail.
Dont even open emails from strangers or those cursed panic alerts!
It's not even simply about opening emails from strangers but that is part of it. I always give this advice: Don't open any attachments from ANYONE whom you're not expecting to receive attachments from. For example, if you receive a jpg from your best friend and it says "omg is this you naked" and you know for a fact that you stopped using "OMG" years ago, then DONT open the jpg. If for example, your friend text you and said "hey I have photo evidence of you from the weekend, I'll email it to you" and then you receive an email from your friend after that, then and only then I will say that you can open the jpg.
Unfortunately you are incorrect. If you use google you can find info about it. To put it simply, the same advice is always given: Don't open ANY attachments from ANYONE whom you're not expecting to receive emails or attachments from.

To expand on reality into the realm of paranoia can one even trust the source is not infected to pass along junk? This is the world we live in with the digital age. Could this be why golf is popular?

Hey ThioJoe, Really nice list.
On the "Google it" to fix your errors suggestion. I'd add be careful of the source of the suggestion, especially if you are working on your employers computer infrastructure. What works for a school kid on his Gaming computer, might not be a great idea on a mission critical server. Security & Data Integrity are often compromised by blindly following internet suggestions.

#4 Many people avoid restarting Windows in order to avoid upgrades. Then, when Windows proposes an upgrade, the option is chose to delay patching as much as possible. It's actually a circle of error, since patches are actually mostly tested on accurately patched systems (with all previous patches applied). So, if you break this cycle, get ready for errors while applying patches. Keep in mind, Windows (10, 7, ..) is a client OS, not a server.

One of them is when your computer can’t handle updates.
Another one is that certain apps don’t work right away.

Another one is if you don’t like the new verison.

4:00 WINDOWS HAS AN ANTIVIRUS windows defender!
Graeme Field. It won’t protect you in most of the situations that a free antivirus does assuming that the antivirus is a virus.
That one doesn’t work well, use MacAffe
I use a password manager, KeePass, for all that password stuff.
KeePass is offline, but you can sync the already encrypted database wherever you want and even if it does get stolen there's no way to unencrypt it without the master key. It can also run off a USB stick or phone.
Poldovico depending on a lot of factors they could find the password just lying around on the server if some idiot wrote it down in a text file, or even in the ram if said idiot deleted it or if it’s still in the memory from a recent decryption. Furthermore if they download the encrypted data it’s possible it can be brute forces over a few years, and then they can get anyone who doesn’t change their passwords. It’s not foolproof :P
@@kepler6873 Keepass is totally offline
the key is somewhere on your computer and you also can define a password for the database
if you want to sync you can either set it to upload it via sftp to your server (and the other clients can download it) or you can install a plugin for dropbox or google drive
the encryption will need some thousand years (more if you are using an password too) to be bruteforced
also: anything is better than nothing
either you have a pretty good password manager where you can store every password for every website (with password reset reminders) and generate random passwords for every site with a length of 128 (except for paypal, they have a 20 max) without remembering them
or you need to use a simple password for everything and has a more chance of beeing hacked :3
but if you need to secure everything you also have more than just a password manager ^^
@@JustPlayerDE Agreed 100%, something is better than nothing, but everything is vulnerable. Just depends on how obscure and tricky the exploit is
@@kepler6873 then dont use a computer.
i just want to say that any (offline) password manager is more secure than writing your own password and or resuse it
