You said Michael wasn't at his peak yet when Bird's Celtics swept them twice in the playoffs 3-0, 3-0. But before they drafted Larry, Celtics record in1979 was 29-53. With Bird the next year the record was 61-21 to lead the Eastern Conference. Biggest turnaround in NBA history to this day
@whenisdinner2137 That's not true though lol not his rookie year It actually took a bit for that team to come around And the east was far stronger then the west Which is why lakers had such an easy road and better team
There’s something about those who want to act like Bird was better than MJ, he points out 2 games. Well after they got Pippen the Bulls and Celtics played more than twice, and why isn’t he talking about the playoffs that year why the regular season. It annoys me because seeing how the 20 something’s and younger didn’t get to see these games, and trying to say that the Bulls couldn’t beat the Celtics is just crap. Why don’t they have the rings? I wish I could get into the comment section of the guy who made this bs. You guys really need to educate yourself if you don't know who Robert Parish is. He's the all time leader in games played, 2nd in offensive rebounds, 8th in total rebounds, and10th in blocks.
Just for the record, tho: Bird's rookie year - the Celtics went from having a 29-53 record the previous season, second from the bottom of the league, to a 61-21 season. In Bird's rookie year. The next year, when they added Parish as center and McHale as a rookie off the bench, a second year Bird took the Celtics to a 62-20 season and the Championship. And personally, was second place in league MVP voting that year.
right, these kids are clueless, the word on MJ was great scorer but not a winner and didnt make his team better- take the knee pads off guys lol MJ even said Bird had no weaknesses as a player and that he learned something new every time he played him...yes, MJ was an awesome player, but to be GOAT takes more
22:51 It was really close, but it was a good call. You could see it even with the broadcast quality back then - the ball was touching Jordan's fingertips as he let the shot go when the clock hit zero.
Isiah got drafted in 81' and was allowed to have a team built around him. He didnt beat the Celtics until 88. So it took him 7 years to beat Bird and 8 to beat the Lakers.
He could run really fast 48 minutes for a big guy. He always seemed to have great court vision. He was a good free throw shooter, which I think an under recognized ability for a center.
@@rodciferri9626 I absolutely love Robert Parrish. I got to see them play a few times with my Dad. All of the sudden a hand is on my shoulder and it's Robert fucking Parrish and he said to me, "hey kid, did you enjoy the game" after I could talk I assured him I did indeed. He signed my program, and now I'm 56 and it's my most prized possession, framed and hanging on the wall in my mancave/ gameroom. Yeah I'm definitely a fan
As a (young) Celtics fan during the Bird era, i used to get so frustrated at how much better Kareem was than parish. Probably unfair to compare Parish to the greatest scoring center ever, but Magic had so much more help than Bird, including in their college matchup
I’m sorry but anyone who makes excuses for Jordan bcuz he was just getting started, or bcuz he “didn’t have a team around him” needs to take a look at Larry’s career….his ROOKIE year, he gave the Celtics the biggest season turnaround in NBA HISTORY! A 32 GAME IMPROVEMENT OVER THE PREVIOUS SEASON, & HE DID IT WITHOUT PARISH, MCHALE, DJ OR AINGE. Many of his teammates were on the brink of retirement: Cowens & Maravich were toast. Tiny Archibald was almost done for, and most of the rest would be gone in a few years.…the only other recent recruit was Cedric Maxwell, & he was not the superstar that Larry was. Jordan did not have the ability to elevate his teammates the way Larry did. Jordan was a showboating gloryhound who didn’t know how to be a good teammate! Larry on the other hand elevated the whole team! So miss me with the excuses for Jordan.. Larry is the best all around player EVER. EDIT TO ADD: IMO the reason Jordan dominated in the 90s is bcuz all the 80s greats aged out & Jordan didn’t have the same level of competition. Furthermore, it took Phil Jackson to FORCE Jordan to play as part of a TEAM. I WILL *NEVER* CALL JORDAN THE GOAT. *MY* GOAT IS LARRY LEGEND.
When Bird and Magic first started, they dominated right away. Jordan not being "at his best" for a few years is fine, but that didn't apply to Bird. He came in rookie year at took a 29W Celtics Team from the previous year to a 61W winning team his rookie season.
Wait a minute. You have to understand that some great players get drafted into situations that fits their style of play early and some don't. I watched Bird and Magic from their first NBA seasons til their last and was convinced they were two of the top five to ever play the game. When MJ came into the league I knew after the first season I was looking at someone on a completely different level as an individual player. When you speak on what a team accomplishes with the addition of a great rookie player that fits right with the type of ball the coach and organization plays then you had some good luck. MJ has the, or, one of the best rookie seasons ever, statistically. So being the right fit for a certain team of players will bring better results. Going to a team that is totally unorganized and you as a rookie are the only bright spot for the teams future means you have to totally remove and add players until you get the right chemistry. Basketball is a team sport at the end of the day. And when you look at the teams MJ, Bird and Magic had around them you have to say MJ did it with less help. That shows you just how good he really was.
@@docgonzalesLarry already had 2 Hall of famers on his team as a rookie, 3 if you count Maravich but of course he was done at that point. But Dave Cowens and Nate Archibald were not done. Were they in their primes, no, but still serviceable and Hall of famers none the less. Not to mention Cedric Maxwell coming off the bench as a very capable scorer. Then the next year he had Mchale and Archibald, and Cowens, Maxwell. So let's not act like Larry came into the league with bums. Jordan played with Coke heads 😆
@jermainezinnerman7450… And they drafted McHale and traded for Parish in 1980 after Birds second year. The willingness of people to close their minds off to reality and deny their own knowledge & understanding in an effort to take way from or slight Mike is the most concrete proof of his Goat status at the very least in their own heads.
@jermainezinnerman7450… There’s a reason when the Bulls and Celtics played each other each time (6 total games) the Bulls were an 8 seed and the Celtics were the 1 seed.
They waved it off because he didn't beat the clock. Hey I put Jordan and Larry bird as my 1a and 1 b. I saw Larry play and you think these highlights are great you should've seen it as it unfolded. Larry not only broke his back but had a piece of a disc removed from his back. He was amazing. There was no player in the history of the nba that had the injuries he had and could still come out and dominate the game the way he did. For that reason he will always be my own personal goat. ❤ great reaction bring more friends in to see just how great he was. Appreciate him while he is still around.
Michael learned from Larry. Michael and Larry waffle between my top 2. Depends what day you catch me on. I watched all this go down. 80s ball was a whole different kinda game!
I remember the announcers saying all the time, well the teammates need to step up and help Jordan, he can't do it by himself but when you're shooting the ball more than all your teammates combined each game how do you as a teammate help in the scoring, you aren't getting to shoot, all you're there for is to get the ball and get the ball to Jordan, play D#, get the ball to Jordan. I'm not saying Jordan wasn't the greatest, im only saying, don't tell me other guys need to step up in scoring when you literally don't get a chance to shoot🤷♂️
Those Piston teams were very good and the Celtics archrivals in the East. Every Piston/Celtic game was a basketball game masquerading as a brawl with hard fouls and bad blood. But they were great. My mom was the BB fan, and she absolutely hated the Pistons.
You guys need to see the video titled - the greatest passer ever with re-edit to see that Bird was a fabulous passer!!! Bird was a wizard with the ball. Bird could shoot lights out from everywhere on the court, rebound like a power forward and had the court vision of a point guard. The best overall player I have ever seen.
At this time, mid to late 80s', Jordan had not learned that Basketball is a "team" game! Jordan HAD TO HAVE THE BALL! It would seem that he was more interested in showing off than working for that "W". That did change in later years and the result would be 6 championships!
I think in some ways larry bird was a blue print to many players. He showed how to statistically play the game perfectly. You gotta be mobile. You gotta work as a team as even massive showboats like Jordan can be beaten if your team is stronger than one man. Passes that kept you guessing. Three pointers that turned the tide of matches. Most important was the psychological warfare. Jordan has admitted he learned psychological warfare from bird as bird was a master at it jordan learned how to raise his prestige to a point that he became a threat even if he wasn't on the court. That is why bird had such a high regard among legends. You hear many from the early days to the present talk about bird you will hear all of them agree that bird was a trailblazer that set new trends for others to follow. If you do not believe me then consider this fact. Bird is the founding member of the 50 40 90 club. No one else before him had that. He set that example and since then very few have come close and even fewer have joined that club. Just looking at how few guys are in that club really says alot. By the way, jordan is not in that club.
He was a non-factor, he didn’t affect the bulls playoff runs and more importantly he didn’t affect the Celtics or the Lakers or the Pistons from being successful. That’s what Isaiah Thomas was trying to say, he didn’t stop any of those team from being NBA champions.
They waved it off because it was 4/10 of a second. I don't care how fast you are you're not going to be able to catch the ball turn around like he did jump and then shoot it in that time.
every generation has their Goat since every decade due to changes in the game. BUT there is only one Legend and that is LARRY THE LEGEND!!! You need to watch "The greatest Rivalry In Sports History Magic vs Bird". If you choose to go down the rabbit hole of 80"s basketball it is a must see!
When you think about it, mentally slow=stupid. My favorite Larry Bird statistic is before he won the three straight MVPs, he was first to runner up three times, after the three MVPs he was first runner up twice. Thanks for this reaction 🏀🏀🏀
It always annoys me when people focus on the fact that MJ didnt have his best team around him in those early matches , whereas Bird Did. However it rarely gets mentioned that in the games when MJ did have his championship team with him in the early 90s he was playing against a sever;y injured Bird playing with an inferior Celtics team and STILL couldnt beat him more than he lost. You cant use the first bit as an argument if you dont count the second part too
I love how un-photogenic Larry is. It's really funny. When you catch him in an action shot playing the game he looks like himself and pretty cool, but whenever he's smiling for a photo he looks like he should be the subject of a meme with a caption under it saying "I can count to potato" or something.
Head to Head is the truth. Larry owned Michael period. The Bulls didnt become dominant until they got Rodman to build the first superteam and Larry retired.
AND 4th his rookie year, then 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd, 2nd The following season, he played just 6 games before having double Achilles/bone spur surgery.
Look at Birds rookie year and see what he did. He took a Boston team that won only 21 games the year before all they did was add Bird and his rookie year Boston won 61.
Listen to all the HOF players talk about Bird being King of the Mountain in 80’s. Even Goats like Magic, Kareem, MJ & Dr J sing Larry praises. How he tore up my Lakers who had so much more talent at every position but SF was incredible. The Left handed game is craziest thing I saw and I did watch that game. MJ is best individual player but Bird is best team player.
You don’t ever get the full understanding of Bird by just seeing his highlights . One thing Bird did that’s not kept in the stats . He was a savant at running down loose balls . Rarely did you see anyone beat Bird to a loose ball.
It took Jordan longer to figure out it takes a team to win! Bird couldve just scored points... but he knew it took a team to win! By constantly involving his teammates and setting a great example for the team..... they got better and better! The Celtics were a great all around team that were almost impossible to beat at their peak!
That game with Jordan when you asked why it was waived off, there was 0.4 seconds on the clock, by the time he shot and the ball reached the basket time was expired. Thus the basket was waived off.
I remember watching ALL of these games and I wasn’t even the biggest NBA fan. Everyone had to pick a side with this rivalry back then. You were either Lakers or Celtics.
It was no blood no foul back in the day .. look at Bird bleeding and those guys getting smacked to the floor. No fines.. maybe a foul shot or two once in a while but that shit looked like rugby .. and it was great to watch
He made a really strong case IMO. I had Jordan as my number 1 until revisiting Larry's highlights, accomplishments, etc. I'd also like to see your friends reaction to the larry bird mixtape, that would be epic. lol Though I will say, Magic won a championship in his rookie year, and Bird in his 2nd year. And Bird I don't believe had a stacked Celtics at the time as it would be later.
Larry didn't care how fast you were. He forced you to play at his speed. Then he was 2 steps ahead of you in your head...hence the "slow or stupid" comment.
There were 2 MJs. Young Michael who played 1 on 5 and Michael who won all those rings cause he got better teammates. Jordan was the most physically gifted player of his era. In my opinion he is in his own category.
Simple as that in terms of his team. People are willing to pretend they don’t know that out of desperation in an effort to slight Mike falsely. And while he was gifted physically he was on another planet mentally as well.
Mike took a while to understand that it takes a whole team to win. One man can only do so much. Larry was great at getting his whole team into win mode. Mikes personal stats are unbelievable. But it wasn’t enough to beat an entire team. Especially the Celtics. Joe Dumars of the pistons said it best. He said the team was nearly impossible to beat because you could not make a mistake. Or it would cost you the game.
@18:01 slight correction: Larry did NOT kick the ball over Jordan’s head, he THREW IT. Larry had the arm of a quarterback. Why would he kick a basketball? Sports Illustrated writer Curry Kirkpatrick was present & he said in an interview that Larry THREW the ball. This stupid “kick the ball” nonsense needs to stop!
Bird was more skilled, but the reality is athleticism is a gift and a big factor in sports. I would never pick bird over mj, but I would pick bird as my sf all day.
Athleticism over length and weight? Idk bro MJ 1v1 with all the space in the world beats Bird but in a 5v5 with limited space I'm taking the dude who has more size and the skill to use that size. Simply more versatile, brings just as much impact to winning as Jordan does without having to score as much. He rebounds better, sets screens better, passes better and gets his team open better, being 6'10 is harder to double than a 6'6 guy cause he can pass over you and see the floor better, his shooting and offball movement creating double teams at the 3pt line before he even gets the ball, to me Bird and MJ are on even ground Bird is the most versatile player ever MJ is the perfect 2 way guard. But both of them get outclassed by a prime Wilt and so does everyone in history.
Guys thank you so much for appreciating Larry Bird. He’s earned it not just in his basketball playing career but afterwards as well you should check it out. He was a very successful behind-the-scenes guy and won lots of awards yada yada yada. What I’m saying is your integrity he worked hard and that was really his Secret. He worked harder than anybody else. He knew where everyone was all the time no one ever had that kind of basketball vision like Larry Bird. He knew where the damn peanut man was! That passing game that rebound game all of it eyes in the back of his freaking head. Again, thank you so much for watching this because these guys deserve it
6:55 Jordan's teammates ain't did nothin'. Bird from day one would put dimes in his teammates faces to get them scoring and turn them into weapons as an extension of himself. That is how he won in a tiny town in HS, and took a tiny college to the NCAA finals. Bird made his team better by extending his greatness into others.
Orlando Woolridge averged 20 points that season for the bulls in 86 and Charles Oakley was a 13 point, 13 rebound interior enforcer.. John Paxson was a deadeye 3 point shooter.. thats about it. and Michael Jordan. I still would pick Bird over Jordan.. tho thats about the ONLY player I would pick over Jordan.
The Bulls were an 8 seed both years, the Celtics were a 1 seed. The Bulls had zero all-stars or all-nba because Mike broke his foot and missed 64 games the first year year… the Celtics had 3 all-stars, the 6th man of the year and league mvp. The next year it was the exact same teams.
Yea the 8 seed with 1 HOF’er was supposed to beat the 1 seed with 5 HOF’ers. Nothing proves Mike’s Goat status more than the standard y’all hold him but nobody else too.
Larry Legend rookie of the year Year two NBA champion …….. Magic Johnson rookie season NBA championship MVP Before Larry Bird my favorite player was Dr. J….. Larry Bird is the most complete player .. And Michael Jordan damn sure is the goat .

To be fair to Jordan, he didn’t have anyone on his own team to teach him how to be a winner, so he had to learn from Larry and it took longer. At least Larry had Dave Cowens and Red.
Bird didn't have a stacked team his first year, and as a rookie turned a 29W team into a 61W team. At the end of his career with a broken back, and messed up feet, he beat prime MJ and Pippen on a regular basis.

You guys really need to educate yourself if you don't know who Robert Parish is. He's the all time leader in games played, 2nd in offensive rebounds, 8th in total rebounds, and10th in blocks.
Dominique Wilkens, Atlanta guard, Hall of Fame, said of Larry Bird; "He had the heart of a lion!"
David Robinson said the same thing Coming from the Admiral means something.
Larry bird has the second highest win percentage of all time he knew how to win and he made everyone around him better
And only short of first by a fraction.
@@davidleach4689 who is first?
@@POVJAKELive Magic Johnson about 10 games
Just for the record, tho:
Bird's rookie year - the Celtics went from having a 29-53 record the previous season, second from the bottom of the league, to a 61-21 season.
If that game was played in Chicago that shot by Jordan would have counted.
15:32 Bird didn't take 5 years to "get good." Rookie Bird took his team from last to first.
Isiah got drafted in 81' and was allowed to have a team built around him. He didnt beat the Celtics until 88. So it took him 7 years to beat Bird and 8 to beat the Lakers.
The Chief Robert Parrish one of the most criminally under appreciated players ever
He could run really fast 48 minutes for a big guy. He always seemed to have great court vision. He was a good free throw shooter, which I think an under recognized ability for a center.
@@jpecci1262 Chief was great - ran the court like a guard - maybe the best fast break center ever.
@@rodciferri9626 I absolutely love Robert Parrish. I got to see them play a few times with my Dad. When I was 13 we went and saw them stomp the Pacers, and after the game I was down on the floor getting cheerlesders to sign my program, it was a different time, you could do that.
I agree.
Wow if you could read all my posts over the years you would see we have an identical take. We'll said😊

Ummm Larry went to a totally disorganised 29w team didn’t he ? isn’t that the same argument you just made for Jordan ?
@@docgonzalesLarry already had 2 Hall of famers on his team as a rookie, 3 if you count Maravich but of course he was done at that point. But Dave Cowens and Nate Archibald were not done. Were they in their primes, no, but still serviceable and Hall of famers none the less. Not to mention Cedric Maxwell coming off the bench as a very capable scorer. Then the next year he had Mchale and Archibald, and Cowens, Maxwell. So let's not act like Larry came into the league with bums. Jordan played with Coke heads 😆
@jermainezinnerman7450…
And they drafted McHale and traded for Parish in 1980 after Birds second year.
The willingness of people to close their minds off to reality and deny their own knowledge & understanding in an effort to take way from or slight Mike is the most concrete proof of his Goat status at the very least in their own heads.
@jermainezinnerman7450…
There’s a reason when the Bulls and Celtics played each other each time (6 total games) the Bulls were an 8 seed and the Celtics were the 1 seed.

The respect between All of them is the most impressive out of everything imo
I remember the announcers saying all the time, well the teammates need to step up and help Jordan, he can't do it by himself but when you're shooting the ball more than all your teammates combined each game how do you as a teammate help in the scoring, you aren't getting to shoot, all you're there for is to get the ball and get the ball to Jordan, play D#, get the ball to Jordan. I'm not saying Jordan wasn't the greatest, im only saying, don't tell me other guys need to step up in scoring when you literally don't get a chance to shoot🤷♂️
Next up you guys should react to Larry's Ultimate Mix Tape together.
@@aramhamparian9641 bet!!
I watched MANY of Birds games. He did something incredible in ALL of them!!! The Legend!
Bird, is the one that took MJ to new heights, tell me about a win, how to play at the highest level. I believe that
Those Piston teams were very good and the Celtics archrivals in the East.
@@thomastims9583 I’m curious who played on Jordan’s team those years??

Larry Legend GOAT.
Larry came into the league hurt and he kept his whole team involved. Larry was definitely not mentally slow. He knew where everyone was
They waved it off because it was 4/10 of a second.
And Bird owned Rodman too, lol.,
If Larry Bird was a little faster and a little more athletic he would have been more HELL to handle than Michael Jordan!!

The following season, he played just 6 games before having double Achilles/bone spur surgery.
Look at Birds rookie year and see what he did. He took a Boston team that won only 21 games the year before all they did was add Bird and his rookie year Boston won 61.
There were 3 other HOFs there already and one of em finished top 5 in mvp that year.

Man that jam in the intro sounds so familiar, what is it? It's a sweet sound.
The Fucking Legend
And why would ANYONE _kick_ a basketball?
You should check out making the case for Larry Bird
Bird would always be my first pick.
He elevates every player around him.
Guys thank you so much for appreciating Larry Bird. He’s earned it not just in his basketball playing career but afterwards as well you should check it out.
