What Isiah Thomas seems to forget is the fact that the Bulls swept the Pistons in the Play-Offs in 1991 and Isiah and the rest of his teammates refused to shake hands with the Bulls team. Shows how much of a sportsman he really was.
Well you figure when bird came in. He came on to the second worst team in the entire league. Is rookie year by himself with none of his help. He took that team from a 29 win team to a 61 win team. And lost in the Eastern conference finals lost to the 76ers with 6 Hall of famers. You know what Larry Bird did his second year in the NBA. It came back to beat those 76ers down down 3 to 1 let me remind you with six Hall of famers and went on to win the championship his first one. It only took them two years to take the second worst team to a championship in winning it.
Offensively you can definitely argue Larry bird in his prime is as effective as anyone that ever had played in the league. But defense matters Larry was a good team defensive player for sure but he wasn’t a Jordan type defender. Larry doesn’t need to score to dominate the game and that’s the difference. At the end of the day though I think once a player is so good ranking them in places ahead or behind another is pointless because you have to start splitting hairs.
Great reaction!!! My Uncle was weatherman for channel 5 in Boston for 31 years!!! Dick Albert!! Love you!!! ♥♥♥Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment. -Proverbs 12:19
I think there are two main reasons why Bird is not talked about as often in the GOAT conversation, and they are (1) his Celtics won three titles while Magic's Lakers won five (and Magic's Lakers were 2-1 against Bird's Celtics in the finals), and (2) Bird's career was relatively short at basically just 12 years. But I think it's a fact that Magic's teams overall were just better, and Bird's career was cut short by injuries, which he had no control over. If you take Bird at his peak as an all-around player, I think no one has ever been better.
100% LeBron is a fantastic player but he, nor any player today, have the mindset of guys like Larry. Ive seen players today cry over a turnover. Like, dude... Come on. Those straight up k¡IIers probably died out with Kobe. May he rest in peace. No one after that has ever shown that same instinct.
lets clarify. 80s Jordan was a STAT MACHINE.. but he DIDNT WIN.. ppl say he had no help but Orlando Wooldridge wasa 20 pt scorer and Charles Oakley was a 13 pt 13 rebound pf, and John Paxson was a dead eye 3 point shooter.. some of those games vs the Celtics were CLOSE BUT despite Jordans numbers, he didnt get it done when it counted.. he MISSED the game tying shot with 40 seconds left in double OT, and bird got the game sealing ASSIST.. thats the difference.. 90s jordan didnt have the STATS that 80s jordan had, but 90s Jordan WON.. people say he didnt have pippen in the 80s.. so i guess pippen is a BIG FACTOR to jordans success right?. bird took a 32 and 29 win celtic team and won 61 games his rookie season.. with that same team that won 32 and 29 games the two seasons before.
Those are some very specific stats about DOUBLE OT, and some teammates. Coaching, systems, talent of teammates don’t provide some context? Some Years Back They Would Talk About Larry. But Then Started By The Media, The Race Crap. So They Sure Couldn't Talk About How A White Man Was Beating All The Great Black Players. Believe The Media Started This Race Crap When Him & Magic First Came In. Just Like Back Then & How Larry Would Deal With It Today. They Could Never Get Larry To Say It Was Because He Had "White Privilege". Hell He Was Poorer Then A Lot Of Black Players Growing Up. But He Worked His Ass Off To Be Able To Play The Way He Did. Also The Media/Sports Media Couldn't Ever Get Him To Respond To Any Of Their Race Baiting Bull Crap. Not Back Then & Still To This Day, He Will Not Let Them Put Him Into Some Kind Of Trick Bag On That Stuff.
I don't know if he's better, but what I do know is that Jordan has probably had a little imaginary Larry on his shoulder throughout his entire career whispering into his ear "You never beat me, Mike. You can accomplish anything and everything from here until the end of time, but you never beat me."
in my best starting 5, I have both Bird and Jordan at their respective positions. To fill the roster, Olajuwon at center, Duncan at PF, and for PG, I'll take Curry to give me 2 good 3 point shooters, as much as I like Magic more.
No question, early on, it was baby Michael and he didn't have as good of a team around him as Larry did. But later in their careers, Larry was old and injured and his teammates were showing age too, while Jordan was in his prime and had a really good team around him. So, to me, the advantages and disadvantages pretty much even out in the long run. From 1984 (Michael's 1st year, Larry's 5th) to 1992 (Larry's last year, Michael's 8th/9th year), they faced off 34 times (over 8/9 years). The overall record was Bird 23 wins, Jordan 11 wins (including Bird being 6-0 in the playoffs vs. Jordan). And as far as cutting Michael some slack for being young and not having the greatest team around him (in the two years of playoff losses to Bird), you also have to realize that Michael needed to learn to be a better team player early in his career. You see the clip in the video of him saying, "one man can't beat the Boston Celtics." because that is how his early career went, he would score a ton of points and yet the team would lose. He tried to do too much himself (partly because he didn't have a ton of top-end talent around him, but it was clear to everyone, except maybe Jordan, that he couldn't beat the best TEAMS as a one-man show). That may also be why it took him a while to win a championship. Yes, he needed better talent around him, and yes, in his early career there were still some dominant, veteran teams...but Michael also needed to learn to get his teammates involved and play a complete team game. Larry knew how to do that from day one. He took a 29-win team to a 61-win team by himself in his first year, and won a championship with that same team in his second year. Also, Jordan reaped the benefits of what Bird and Magic had built. He hit the league at just the right time when its popularity and overall global media expansion merged to make Jordan a global phenomenon. And a lot of the older players faded away more quickly as everything became about Michael (that is why you see a bit of animosity maybe from Isaiah Thomas and Robert Parrish in the video). To a lot of the world, the NBA wasn't even on their radar until Michael was all of a sudden everywhere (on every magazine cover, in every commercial, his giant Nike deal and Air Jordans, etc.). Now none of that is to disrespect Michael Jordan at all (just giving a little context to the history). I personally have Jordan and Bird as co-GOATs...and generally I will give the 1a to Jordan, with the 1b to Bird (even though I was a Celtics/Bird fan growing up and rooted against Michael, except when he played the Pistons or the Lakers). Because Jordan WAS something we had never seen before. Yes, he was lucky on the timing (to become a global star), but there was no fake hype about him. He was every bit as good as his highlights show and every bit as fun to watch (whether you rooted for the Bulls or not). And he had that competitive fire that all of the greats (like Bird) had. Truly, it's hard for me to separate the two. They are both the greatest to me, just in slightly different ways, with slightly different skillsets. But both great all-around players. I mean how many Forwards are the best shooter in the game and pass and handle the rock like Larry, and how many Shooting Guards/prolific scorers, are also consistently one of the best defenders in the league like Michael?
Bird and Magic came in the league the same year, Magic won the championship Bird won ROTY, Bird won his second season, Jordan didn’t win for six seasons

Call Jordan the GOAT, I won't argue, but if you're doing a time travel draft, don't think about who you'd rather have to start your team. Think about who you'd rather face. Jordan could dazzle, but Bird could win against anyone, even if his shot was off. Take Jordan's shot away, and how much of his game do you lose? Who would you least like to face in a historical draft of NBA players in their prime? Thinking about that should teach you something.
It was his early years but with that said Bird was drafted to a team that only won 29 games the year before and with just adding Bird they won 62 games and went to the Eastern conference finals
@@bodiep3466 The whole discussion was on whether Bird somehow magically transformed the Celtics, but in truth, every star player had plenty of talent around them when they won their first championship. I posted a little down the discussion the number of HoFers each star player of that era had during their first championship. Not knocking Bird, but it's a false narrative that the team success hinged only on him.
I think the correct answer is “Who cares?” I prefer Bird, but Jordan is amazing. It’s just a preference thing. I like his play style more and I find him more interesting. I think far too many people get hung up on trying to prove that their favorite guy is the best. For me there are just too many factors to prove those claims. The debates could go on ad infinitum.
Comparsion: Larry took a losing Celtic team and in 2 years took them to the title. It took Jordan 4 years to get his first title. Larry did not kick the ball he threw it down the court. Reglar season wins Larry 24 Jordan 11 Playoffs wins Larry 6 Jordan 0. Larry is simply a LEGEND!
Correction it took jordan 7 years to get his first title also jordan didn’t have a single 60+wins into his first title year when he won a chip! In 7 years larry have 6 60+ wins 2x 3 peat kinda like MJ 2x 3 peat championship, Larry have one 56 wins season only 4 win away from another 60+ win
Isaiah is right that he was a non factor to win a championship. No 1 person was going to beat any of the 80's powerhouses. Nobody would think Jordan's 88 season was a fluke. My uncle told me the 80s was about titles and nothing else. I dig that
Was it Jordan's early years? Yeah. But look at Magic and Bird's first couple years in the league. They both won championships right away. I always think that Bird showed Michael what he needed to do to become the MJ we now remember, he had to get schooled first. I would also argue that the competition in the 80s was far superior to the competition the Bulls faced in the 90s. But you can't argue against 6 rings, no point.
I’d take Larry Bird over anyone in his prime. Larry’s IQ couldn’t be beat. Plus he was a deadeye shot and 6’ 10”. Slow didn’t matter when it came to Larry.
On your argument at the end, saying it was baby Jordan by the same token you argue that it was a old Larry Bird often carrying serious injuries. Bird 100% should get mentioned in the GOAT conversion. Plus remember they changed the rules of the league for Jordan. Okay you could argue it was coincidence but seriously look up the rule changes from 89/90 onwards. Personally I believe Bird was a better all round player than Jordan, even without the ball Bird was always a danger. No question though Jordan was a menace ball in hand. The only argument for me you could make for Bird not being the GOAT is that his career was only 13 seasons (one of those seasons he only played 6 games, so basically 12 seasons). Because Bird had serious hustle he broke his body down, his ankles, elbows and back all needed work done I believe. So he doesn't have the longevity of others. Just discovered your channel, I appreciate that unlike a lot of younger fans you're willing to watch older players and go in with a open mind. If more people did, Birds ability would win them over because he was a serious baller. Every single player who played against him, even the ones who hated him, all say he was ridiculously great. Liked, subscribed, keep up the good work.
as the league saw Bird and Magic exiting they needed to fill the void. That's when any contact with Jordan became a fowl and the league became less physical the league got the filler and the game got weaker. 85-86 Celtics beats ANY Jordan team
Jordan is individually the better player. But its a team game and Bird is the far better all around player. If I had a great team and wanted to top it off, Id probably take Jordan If I was starting a new team and had the first pick there is no one in history I would ever pick above Larry legend. If you set "best" player aside and instead look at the *_highest value_* player ever, I dont think anyone can challenge Bird. To some people "the best" and "the highest value" are the same thing which is why so many rank Bird over Jordan. Im not sure they necessarily are, which is why I dont have one defined goat. I have Larry, Magic and Jordan as the top three and I just dont bother ranking them
Larry Bird didnt pick Larry Bird over MJ when he made the God in disguise comment. And you know it came from a real place coming from him. That being said, Im taking Bird over LeBron everyday and twice on Sunday. And both on my starting 5
MJ ONLY WON AFTER BIRD AND MAGIC RETIRED! HE WAS A NON FACTOR ON THE 80'S! Was MJ just drafted? No he wasn't! But even if the answer was yes. BIrd when drafted was rookie fo the year and only by himself he make the Celtics form the 21 to 61 wins, the largest single-season turnarounds in NBA history (a 32-win improvement) BY HIMSELF! and got 4th on MVP. The amount os excuses MJ fans made are very funny! largest single-season turnarounds in NBA history (a 32-win improvement) Anyway, great reaction! Most younglings just ignore the facts and can''t accept that Larry was on the same caliber or even over MJ.
Did Isaiah not say that Bird beat Jordan in Jordan’s best year (MVP/88?). Was it also not said that Bird beat Jordan when Jordan had some help (Pippin). Lastly, did Bird not beat Jordan when Bird’s body was failing him? Stop the excuses, you’ve seen and heard the reality! Jordan’s greatest asset was his body (physicality), Bird’s greatest asset was his mind (mental). You might be a big deal at checkers, but Bird plays chess.
Stop whining about this is early in his career. Magic won in his first season bird took a team with 29 wins and in his second rookie season he took them to 61 wins . Then he won in his second year. Great players make everyone around them better. Look at the playoffs in 81 the Celtics and the sixers the best series ever. At the end of every game bird puts the team on his shoulders and carries them to victory.
They say, Jordan is the best in history like Tom Brady. At least, Jordan faced physical defense. Tom Brady did not play against Lawrence Taylor or Reggie White. Old school will beat you down.
How in the Hell can you not give kudos to Larry Legend.. double teamed by Jordan and Pippen.. still makes the shot.. when Larry was in so much pain.. playing through injuries.. Give credit where credit is due.. I don't care about your color of skin.. Larry Legend was amazing. Just look at the stats
But keep in mind Larry Bird is only one of three players in the history of the NBA to win three consecutive MVPs the only other two to do it or Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, no Jordan no LeBron

People have to remember to that back when Bird was playing ....It was the roughest time in the league! The rules were very different back then. It was much harder to score & 3 pointers didn't become a 1979 iBirds rookie year! Even then most of the coaches discouraged players from even trying for a 3 pointer. So the points they racked up were not from 3's! After Larry Bird retired they actually moved the 3 point line closer to the basket during Jordan's time! I can't remember how long they let it stay that way but they did finally move the line back again.

There is Bird, MJ and Magic. Nobody has gotten into their club yet.
I don't know that Larry was better than Jordan, but he could hold his own with him.
Look birds ✋️ hands.
The shot over Jordan and Pippen should be a statue.
Kevin came in later in Larry's career, and Walton came even later. Larry was injured by then. All of them were injured by the time they played Jordan.
Larry taught Jordan how to win!!!!
I would take Larry Bird over Lebron, or any of the chumps from this new garbage NBA of today!!

jordan was more of a dominant 2 way force.. Its just that Bird did EVERYTHING you can do on a basketball court at a high level.. scored, clutch, long ball, inside, outside, off ball, set picks, boxed out, rebounded, HUSTLED, automatic midi, automatic free throw, post from ANYWHERE, jab steps, step backs, fades, hook shots, steals, blocks, defended the ENTIRE COURT, passed and go his teamates involved, yet was ALWAYS looked at as clutch but never selfish.. his teamates CREDIT him for their success, his opponets hold him in REVERANCE (including Michael Jordan).. he did the little things that even seasoned basketball fans dont see or understand.. Jordan was great.. and its a DIFFICULT decision but I gotta go with Bird. and Jordan next.. give me those two guys on my team and its OVER. throw in steph for the 3 ball, Shaq the inside presence, Kevin Garnett the defensive genius, Jordan and Bird..

You need to watch “making the case 1986 Celtics” best team of all time
You can't use that excuse of 'Jordan just came in' when he just got a sixty three point game the night before. He had all those titles that one year & the Bulls came in fourth or fifth in their division every year until Pippen joined. The team was not ass before Pippen started. He had some hall of famers on the team.
@@ldybozz Exactly. Plus, Magic won the Championship in his first year in the pros and Larry did it in year 2. Both the Lakers and Celtics started rebuilds not long before. Can't use the rookie excuse for MJ. Plus, when Scottie Pippen did join the Bulls, a broken down Larry still got the better of him.
What hall of famers did Jordan have before Pippen?
@jrmarcus Gervin & Gilmore
Yes early years it was but larry is still the 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
3 years ain't a rookie.
Bird actually hurt his back in 85. Hate that this video gets it wrong.
LB n MJ were gifted in different ways, one by instincts and the other by athelitism. It was the fans that won. Watching the best of the best!
Jordan had NO team during the years he played against Bird... even Bird knew Jordan was on another level...
I you ask players. Yes Larry is harder to defend. Best SF and best all around player all time,
Bird and Magic came in the league the same year, Magic won the championship Bird won ROTY, Bird won his second season, Jordan didn’t win for six seasons
MJ is the better individual player, Bird is the better team player.

When he was young collage. .guy liked the team other. Bird bird bird. He said i saw picture went really.😊
It was his early years but with that said Bird was drafted to a team that only won 29 games the year before and with just adding Bird they won 62 games and went to the Eastern conference finals
They also added McHale and Parish that year.
@jrmarcus no they did not. You might want to research your history. I'm old enough to have watched the games.

I posted a little down the discussion the number of HoFers each star player of that era had during their first championship. Not knocking Bird, but it's a false narrative that the team success hinged only on him.
Jordan had to learn to play team ball at the highest level. That came natural to Bird. Nobody had greater impact on team success as Bird.
Yes he was younger then bird.
Bill Walton couldn't move back then because his knees were done. Bill Walton average 4 points a game
@@gregmack16 he was 7foot right?
Three steals, that is a six points turnaround.
In all honesty, the Bulls were not a deep team at that time compared to the Lakers, Celtics, Pistons etc. They were GOATs passing each other in time.
@@bodiep3466 so you even made the point better with it took 7 years for Jordan to get a title...still took Larry less!

Non factor🤣🤦🏾♂️ Salty as hell, but later got out of the hating phase.
Yes. He played hurt most of the time
Yes, however that celtics team had 5 hall a famers on it.
It’s not Larry fault he’s too good😂 he make his team and all stars all by himself
I watched Birds entire career and MJ. I have them 1A and 1B
I’d take Larry Bird over anyone in his prime. Larry’s IQ couldn’t be beat. Plus he was a deadeye shot and 6’ 10”. Slow didn’t matter when it came to Larry.
Too bad MJ didn’t play for the Celtics
