(In which case it'd still be weird, but then the hospital scene wouldn't have been as off-putting, and would have been a good opportunity for him to say, "If you still want to date in five or six years, give me a call"). It happened because Asher goes after 18-19-year-olds. That's weird.
Yes! I had a section that I cut out of the video where I said something similar. It didn't seem like Asher was into Paris because she was just so unique and special that he looked past her age. He was into her because of her age. They got together very quickly (they start seeing each other in the same episode that they met) and like you mentioned, he has a pattern of doing this.

I was so upset when Doyle and Paris weren’t together in Gilmore Girls A Year Life! Maybe Terrence could have helped them with their issues?! I understand now what they had wasn’t healthy, but at least then maybe it would been more amicable?!
It is a shame that they didn't keep Doyle and Paris together in the revival. I think they were good together. I'll probably get into this topic more when I get to the revival but I feel like while I understand how these two might not work out, the reasons that were given in the revival didn't feel right to me (based on how I understand the characters).
I always thought so too. Or if they weren’t, they could have been friends amicably co-parenting. I hated that Paris, after clearly being willing to work on herself, was essentially the same neurotic person in the roboot. To me it would have made more sense that while maybe not having a perfect life, she should be happy and have most of what she wanted and be more relaxed and mature. And definitely not shook by seeing Tristan. It would have been a nice contrast in the reboot for all of Paris’ hard work over the whole show to be shown to have paid off in the, even if she was divorced, while Rory’s coasting on charm, lack of self awareness, and not being as willing to try new things as Paris ended with her struggling.
Okay, a lot of people are saying that they were shocked when Paris got with Asher, for me it made PERFECT SENSE, I was never a fan of it but I truly think it made so much sense for Paris’ character. Based on her home life, Paris had major Daddy issues, I don’t remember perfectly but did they ever mention Paris’s dad? If they did it was probably once or twice. We see this with many other teacher x student tropes (I’m specifically referring to teacher that’s a man and student that’s a girl) usually the student has family problems and without realizing search for a parental figure, usually they notice they are doing this and see them as a romantic partner. Giving the adult an opportunity to take advantage of the fact the student wants an adult around. Also we always kind of see that school is Paris’s escape from her home life with her Mom, and she’s so hard working when it comes to school. A professor, would be smart enough for Paris (in her own eyes) and mature enough for Paris. And at that point in Paris’s life, I think it made sense for Paris to fall in love with an older man. (I am not enforcing these relationships in anyone, I find them manipulative, and frankly makes me uncomfortable. ALL MY OPINION) #TeamDoyle
Prior to the Asher relationship, i think the only real mention of her dad was when her parents very public, very messy divorce was being discussed, and then a one-off that divorce was apparently going to be too expensive. Beyond that, it was the family legacy she felt she didn't live up to by not being accepted into Harvard. But yeah, Paris had some major issues at home. Her parents weren't even at her graduation, her nanny and her kids were. And yeah, I see what you're saying. The relationship makes sense. Beyond the initial shock, it isn't very surprising. That doesn't make it any less awful, but it does make a certain amount of sense.
that would be unbearable, even to watch. They both had such strong characters... neither of them would take it easy. It would be two hard heads trying to prove who is more emotionally unstable.
Wow, that is a fascinating potential character combination! I agree that it could be unbearable, but also... maybe it could be amazing? Both of them are SO sure of themselves in their irritating behavior, and they come from completely different social strata that neither would respect, BUT they both have terrible families who neglect them, and that could allow them to bond over their trauma. I think Paris would bully the hell out of Jess to get his shit together, and I think that might actually have worked, whereas soft young Rory couldn't have pushed him enough. To clarify, it is NOT someone's job to push their partner to improve (and especially not a woman needing to fix her man, etc). But we do in reality change during relationships, with the influence (for good or ill) of our partner. I basically imagine that Jess would have ended up in his later season situation: a writer, part of an indie book world, calm and collected and fine as hell. And Paris would have appreciated the effort he put in, and even though he didn't make it through academia his drive and achievement would have mattered to her in a way that it just didn't for Rory. And though it may sound weird, I bet they would have super intense chemistry. They do so much work to make Paris seem less attractive than Rory, but Paris is beautiful and deserves to shine. I never knew I had such strong feelings about these two characters! To anyone who read the whole thing, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. 🤓 Edit: I realized I didn't mention what Jess offers Paris! I would actually love to hear thoughts on this. What does young Jess really have to offer to anyone? He's adorable, but damn he's difficult.
@@Phoenix-zy1cx I love this idea! I agree, that especially as adults, they would be really good together. As for what Jess offers to Paris, I would say he offer intellectual and emotional stimulation. I could imagine them having the longest discussions
I always wanted them to be friends. They could have had so many great scenes. Like imagine the phone call they could've had when Rory dropped out of Yale 😅
I have heard other people talk about this possibility before, and there are some good fanfiction out there exploring it. Personally, I would prefer them as friends, but I do wish they had gotten to interact more.
It’s funny to me to hear that some people thought it was creepy that Dean watched Rory before approaching her. That’s totally normal for teens. It wasn’t like he was going out of his way to stalk her.
i always felt really bad for Jamie and Dean (season 1 NOT older Dean), they were all teenagers and each other's first love. Being a teen is intense already and so are the feeling you have. I don't find Deans watching Rory creepy, who hasn't watched their crush from afar? It's nerve-racking to even approach a crush. Jamie and Paris also had a good time on their date, it is just their date was at the very end of summer and he was going off to college so he wasn't sure. They're only 1 year apart too, so no weird age play going on and his "driving 3 hours to visit her" is not creepy. if u look at it from a creepy lens then all you will see are creepy actions.
Paris’ relationship with Asher was bad in so many ways. But if I was Rory, living in the same dorm room as Paris and had known her for all those years, I don’t know if I’d try to stop her relationship with Asher. Paris is strong willed, does what she wants, and lashes out when things go badly in her romantic life.
Yeah, that is where I landed as well. I can't see Rory or another peer trying to get in the way of Paris' relationships because it would cause more trouble. I think it's realistic for Rory to not do anything about it.
I wish we would have gotten to see her dates with Jamie. I thought it was very sweet when she did not realize he asked her out, and when she needed help with clothes. Would have been nice to see her character on that first date - both her blunt, intelligent side, and her nervous, smitten side. Asher should never have happened, I hate it. Why? WHY? For a few jokes, some of the worst in the show? Nah... I like to reimagine her arc with a serious tone, where the obviously exploitative affair with a huge power imbalance is taken seriously, and it's a consequence of her trauma of having absent parents, a need for validation, and her sort of "old for her age" self image she has (though at times she is obviously childish) - she had a lot of real traits and experiences that puts girls/women at risk for these sorts of relationships.
I never realised the parallel between Jamie and Dean... even tho I seen this show many times. And I love the alternate storyline :) And I hate how in the new eps Paris and Doyle are breaking up.... But... Great video :))
I LOVE the Lindsay side theory. Once I stopped hating her and realizing the different perspectives, I always hoped she’d want more for herself…but it’s also okay that she wanted to be a wife and a mom (tho I think she also felt pressured by Dean and her own parents). Hearing she had a lot of options in theory is a nice idea
Great Analysis (as always)! I adored the little storytime with Jamie and Lindsay! What really struck me was you saying you don't blame Lorelai or anyone for not speaking out against Asher, because they are not real people, but written that way. Yes, absolutely, obviously - and yet you spelling it out the way you did felt new to me? At the very least it was a good reminder that characters aren't human and that stories aren't the real world. Somehow that simple statement stuck with me, so, thanks! Also really liked your rewrite of the Asher storyline and thoughts on how it could have affected the Gilmores. Sadly, I don't think Richard would have a hard time believing that Paris was in a relationship with her Prof, but a hard time seeing it as wrong/a big deal. Maybe until he overhears his granddaughter and her friend saying something naive about the relationship and realizes how young they really are?
Thank you! ☺️ You saying that you gained a new perspective means a lot, it means I’m getting better at expressing myself. I agree that Richard would probably not care about the Asher/Paris relationship. I thought that perhaps if he was forced to see how similar Paris and Rory are, he might develop some sympathy for Paris. If Rory spoke to him, he might be convinced. Without that, I think he would totally condone the relationship.
When people asks me if I am team Dean or team Jess or team Logan... I say I am team Doyle. The 2016 sequel played dirty on Doyle and Paris again. They are so perfect for each other!
The scene between Asher and Paris in the hospital was always weird to me. When I watched it one time I was in a similar relationship with a guy that was much older than me and before Paris got into the room I thought maybe I can learn from this scene (I was considering to break it up). But to me there was no chemistry, it seemed more like a talk between a dad or grandpa with his (grand)daughter 😖 I know it is stupid but I still have feelings for the guy even though he is 20 years older than me and I imagine a serious relationship with him would be hell cause our world views don’t match 😂 But our affair ended 7 years ago and looking back I am glad about that
It's not stupid to still have feelings! We can't help how we feel. It's good that you decided to move on and that you are glad you did. I agree with you on the scene between Asher and Paris. To me, it almost felt like the actor himself didn't feel comfortable with the relationship. There was no romantic chemistry.
@@PensiveWhiskers that is so nice of you to say 🥺 Thank you for validating my feelings 💗 I love your videos and because of you and "Better with Bob" I consider watching the intire Buffy show 😅
🙂I would recommend it, it's personally my favorite show. I know some people don't like supernatural shows, but I think it explores a lot of interesting themes using the supernatural.
I am confused as to the fact that so many people here are more upset about Paris's consenting relationship with an older man than Rory's sleeping with a married Dean. I was Team Dean until he married Lindsay. It is funny that Dean was married, but Rory was actually the one using him to prove that she can have him any time she wants. Asher was respectful of Paris, where the latter relationship between Rory and Dean was nothing but toxic. I 💕 the idea of Lindsay ending up with poor Jamie!
I think people find it more upsetting because the show addresses the ethics in one case more than the other. Because Asher uses the power of his position as a professor to prey on Paris (and other young women before her). There's a clear pattern of him preying on women who are barely legal age, and that's 100% a red flag. Yet the show plays it for laughs. When it comes to Rory and Dean cheating though, the show actually deals with the fact that they both did something undeniably wrong-immediately after, we have a blowout argument where Lorelei (rightfully) gives Rory and earful and calls her out not only for sleeping with a married man but also for trying to blame his wife for his actions. I think the fact that they actually address the ethics there makes a difference to how a lot of viewers feel about it. I also think that viewers find the Asher situation both morally wrong and creepy, whereas the cheating situation is just morally wrong.
Thank you! 😁 I’ve been having so much fun creating alternative stories. It’s been the best part of the video making process, even if some of my stories are not well received. 😂
tangentially related but one thing I liked about Doyle is that there were never jokes made about him being short. It’s nice to see as another man below 5’5
3:48 i’ve always thought that paris’ main 3 relationship are just like rory’s. Jamie is the “perfect” guy, cute and sweet but a tad boring and can’t keep her interest, much like dean to rory. (i know yall are gonna hate me for this comparison, but it’s very loose), then jess / asher are the ones that enter their lives and cause excitement and make them feel seen and heard in some way, causing them both to cheat on their boyfriends (this is why i’ve always hated when rory bashes on paris to lorelai for cheating with an OLDER guy as if age makes it any worse). both relationships end badly (for different reasons), and both relationships cause judgement from their peers. then doyle and logan come along snd theyre like the perfect match for both of them, yale men and career driven.
you shouldve been in the writers room! love your takes! thx for the lorelai love interest video as well- i forgot half of them; but i agree it shoulve been the fishing guy longer... but i really like your way of giving them lose ends an idea like with jamie and lindsay
I'm so happy Paris found Doyle, they were perfect together. Asher kind of manipulated Paris to fall for him so Paris cheating on Jamie wasn't her fault!
I loooove to watch another Buffy fan. Seriously, I've been watching Gilmore Girls videos non stop and you are the first one to mention Jonathan when talking about Doyle 😂❤ And yeah, I went through the same thing 😅
I cannot unsee Jonathan in Doyle 🤣. I’m sure there are a lot of connections between Buffy and Gilmore Girls that I’m not covering. There is an interesting podcast that I used to listen to where a couple would watch both Buffy and Gilmore Girls and then discuss both shows. They noticed a lot of parallels between the shows.
I agree with pretty much everything you said. I was happy for Paris when Jamie happened, but we never knew him well enough for me to ship it, and the Asher thing was really unnecessary, though I don't know that I ever noted the Dean-Rory-Jess parallel until you pointed it out. Doyle was her best relationship by far, and I hate that they broke up in the revival. Also, I love how the first time Buffy the Vampire Slayer is referenced in the series is in the same episode Paris and he get together. I don't think this is a coincidence either. It's documented that Amy Sherman Palladino is a Buffy fan, and she's said that she would have Buffy on in the background while she was working on Gilmore Girls scripts, taking inspiration from the quick and snappy dialogue. She was happy to get a Buffy alum for her show, and she named him Doyle, which was clearly a reference to Doyle from Angel the Series RIP. I love Jonathan and Doyle, though Doyle is clearly a better person. When you said Jonathan had problematic aspects, I thought you would show a clip of him talking about the twins that he essentially raped when he cast that spell in S4. I honestly don't think peeing in the pool of a swim team that bullies you is that bad, though I guess we could see it as indication that he had a vengeful side which he would use when he had the ability to do so. Anyway, great video. Stay safe.
I also thought that Rory’s mention of Spike and Dru in that episode was foreshadowing for Doyle. That’s a good point about Doyle being named after Doyle on Angel. I always associated the name « Doyle » with the character on Angel so I automatically thought it was a funny coincidence that a Buffy alum would have the same name as a Buffyverse character. The peeing in the pool is definitely not Jonathan’s worst action, or even close to it. I was attempting (and failing) to do an inside joke with Buffy fans. I was thinking “what if I included the most benign clip of a character who has clearly done a lot worse.” I’m not very good with jokes so a lot of them fall flat in my videos. 😅
I think there's some evidence to support that hypothesis. When Rory said to Paris "my grandfather introduced you to him, do you see how weird that is for me?" Paris says "Well, hot men tend to run in packs."
24:30 I guess I kind of understand them not working out in the end because they were pretty on and off a lot of the time. But I still hate that they split up in the remake. It felt so unnecessary and annoying. Like they were the type of couple where if they kept them together in the remake it would NOT make people go like "This makes no sense at all! Why are they still together?" People would accept it and even find it cute because Rory's adult life is so depressing that Paris' family/career life would have been a nice break. An example of a relationship they should have ended in the remake was Lane and Zach's though. THEY are the couple where it makes no sense for them to stay together.
I hated that Paris threw Rory under the bus when she broke up with Jamie, but believe it or not I was hoping that she and Asher worked out, in spite of the age difference. But Doyle was perfect for her..
@@PensiveWhiskers I'm not entirely sure how to say it .. he seemed to really care for her in spite of any gossip about other girls. It was like he really wanted to think of a possible future path with her. He could have been good for her if fate hadn't intervened...

I'm sorry I didn't include it. I have been thinking of doing a separate video on AYITL so I have been mostly holding off on discussing the content of the revival. I want to figure out how I feel about all of it first. When I'm watching with my thinking cap on, my perception shifts a lot. I took some notes on the revival but I have to go back and re-watch again. I will be sure to discuss Paris and Doyle in the revival when I make that video. :)
Rory's lucky. Paris is lucky. People should stop saying that just because someone's with a half way decent guy. The guy isn't the prize. She should be encouraged to give up someone that isn't right for her.
In regards to Asher - Is it really wrong for two consenting adults to have a relationship? Yes there’s an age gap but he never forced Paris into anything?
Jamie and Paris was just inappropriate due to the fact she was a minor when they started dating, but her relationship with Asher should have delved into more about why they were drawn to each other, the power dynamics, etc
She wasn't necessarily a minor She was getting ready to start her senior year and could have turned 18 over the summer. Lots of people are legal adults during their senior year.
I hated paris and doyle but tbh I just think Paris would have been better off with a woman. if she and rory dated rory's life would be way more together that's for sure- Paris doesn't date flops

Thank you so much! I'm happy I can revive some interest. Plus, your comment makes me feel more confident in arguing that my use of the shows' footage falls under "fair use." 😆
Is this a canon or a fan theory?
The Jamie/Lindsay romance? It's my fan fiction. 🙃
@grodriguez7225 I felt the same way!
ALL MY OPINION)
#TeamDoyle
I actually wanted Paris to date Jess a bit, she would have kept him in check lol
that would be unbearable, even to watch.
Edit: I realized I didn't mention what Jess offers Paris!
Right? I thought I was the only one not put off by that. What many people do now with cyber stalking is way more creepy and intrusive imo
i always felt really bad for Jamie and Dean (season 1 NOT older Dean), they were all teenagers and each other's first love.
“I think Jamie’s actions could also be interpreted in a creepy way. He drove three hours to a high school to-“
okay fair point 💀
Hahahahaha 😆
love the idea of Jamie & lindsay
Thanks! Whenever there's a loose end on a show, I feel very tempted to create a happy ending. I know it's a little too positive and aspirational.
@@PensiveWhiskers can't be too positive in a World like this
the Jamie & Lindsay Ending? Only version of their future I will accept from now on 🤡🤡
😁
Paris’ relationship with Asher was bad in so many ways. But if I was Rory, living in the same dorm room as Paris and had known her for all those years, I don’t know if I’d try to stop her relationship with Asher. Paris is strong willed, does what she wants, and lashes out when things go badly in her romantic life.
Yeah, that is where I landed as well. I can't see Rory or another peer trying to get in the way of Paris' relationships because it would cause more trouble. I think it's realistic for Rory to not do anything about it.
The analysis I didn't know I needed!
Am I the only one who would love a spin off series or something like that where we fallow Paris?
Always enjoy your Gilmore girls videos, can't wait to watch ❤️
Thank you! 😊 I hope you enjoyed it!
I REALLY love your alternative plotlines here.
I absolutely cackled at imagining asher doing krav maga 😂
Same 😂
When people asks me if I am team Dean or team Jess or team Logan...
But to me there was no chemistry, it seemed more like a talk between a dad or grandpa with his (grand)daughter 😖
I know it is stupid but I still have feelings for the guy even though he is 20 years older than me and I imagine a serious relationship with him would be hell cause our world views don’t match 😂
But our affair ended 7 years ago and looking back I am glad about that
It's not stupid to still have feelings! We can't help how we feel. It's good that you decided to move on and that you are glad you did. I agree with you on the scene between Asher and Paris. To me, it almost felt like the actor himself didn't feel comfortable with the relationship. There was no romantic chemistry.
@@PensiveWhiskers that is so nice of you to say 🥺
Thank you for validating my feelings 💗
I love your videos and because of you and "Better with Bob" I consider watching the intire Buffy show 😅
🙂I would recommend it, it's personally my favorite show. I know some people don't like supernatural shows, but I think it explores a lot of interesting themes using the supernatural.
@@larafranke1802definitely watch Buffy. It's so so good. 😊
You should be a writer. Everything you said should've been written differently makes so much sense and god I love your videos
Thank you! 😁 I’ve been having so much fun creating alternative stories. It’s been the best part of the video making process, even if some of my stories are not well received. 😂
i loved the relationship you made with lindsay and jamie. it was very practical and i love it😭 it is now a part of me
PARIS AND JAMIE WERE SO PERFECT I WILL NEVER FORGIVE HER FOR DOING HIM DIRTY
Me neither I really didn't like that the writers ended that relationship
I love love love the Jamie and Lindsay idea 💖💖
I love Doyle. I love a smart, short, strong man.
Yes! Doyle is great. I think he made a good romantic interest. He was so incredibly supportive and loving in season 7.
tangentially related but one thing I liked about Doyle is that there were never jokes made about him being short. It’s nice to see as another man below 5’5
3:48 i’ve always thought that paris’ main 3 relationship are just like rory’s. Jamie is the “perfect” guy, cute and sweet but a tad boring and can’t keep her interest, much like dean to rory. (i know yall are gonna hate me for this comparison, but it’s very loose), then jess / asher are the ones that enter their lives and cause excitement and make them feel seen and heard in some way, causing them both to cheat on their boyfriends (this is why i’ve always hated when rory bashes on paris to lorelai for cheating with an OLDER guy as if age makes it any worse). both relationships end badly (for different reasons), and both relationships cause judgement from their peers. then doyle and logan come along snd theyre like the perfect match for both of them, yale men and career driven.
i love all of our videos! could u please do one about cristopher?
you shouldve been in the writers room! love your takes! thx for the lorelai love interest video as well- i forgot half of them; but i agree it shoulve been the fishing guy longer... but i really like your way of giving them lose ends an idea like with jamie and lindsay
I'm so happy Paris found Doyle, they were perfect together. Asher kind of manipulated Paris to fall for him so Paris cheating on Jamie wasn't her fault!
Its the man's fault she cheated....of course. Lol.
Have you thought about making a video with your thoughts on Jonathan?@@PensiveWhiskers
I have considered it. He is a complicated character. My feelings about him are even more so. Not quite ready for him.
Fair.@@PensiveWhiskers
I’ve done the Paris/Asher relationship pipeline
Oh goodness, when you were in college?
jamie actually told paris he loved her during christmas, not thanksgiving
Hey! Thank you for pointing this out. I went back to check and it is Christmas. I don’t know why I said Thanksgiving
15:21 I can’t believe this is the quote you used to show Jonathan being problematic😂😂😂
I mean, if there was ever a quote to represent Jonathan’s problematic nature…it’d be that one 😂
Idk why but I always got the vibe that Paris had a huge crush on Richard
I think there's some evidence to support that hypothesis. When Rory said to Paris "my grandfather introduced you to him, do you see how weird that is for me?" Paris says "Well, hot men tend to run in packs."
I beg you to do a video on your controversial views on lorelai’s relationships!! I love your videos and the anticipation is killing me
Thank you for the video :D
Thank you for watching. ☺
ahhh ily videos!
Thank you 🙏❤️
i loved this video so much!!
Yay! I'm so glad!
Surprised they wasted the talent of Michael York on such a plot line
Yeah, I would have wanted them to stay together in the revival. They were so in sync at the end of the original series.
I don't think Asher was a predator. I think the hospital scene is Asher coming to terms with his patheticness & trying to preserve some dignity.
I hated that Paris threw Rory under the bus when she broke up with Jamie, but believe it or not I was hoping that she and Asher worked out, in spite of the age difference. But Doyle was perfect for her..
Interesting take re: Asher/Paris. Why did you hope that relationship would work out? No judgement! 🙂 I'm just curious.
@@PensiveWhiskers I'm not entirely sure how to say it .. he seemed to really care for her in spite of any gossip about other girls. It was like he really wanted to think of a possible future path with her. He could have been good for her if fate hadn't intervened...
@@petabulmer3317There would always have been a power dynamic.
so dean=Jamie, jess=asher and logan=doyle??
Hahahahaha, I guess? In terms of plotline similarities but very different in terms of everything else. 😆
Great video!
Thank you! 😁
Asher dates a different 18 to 19 year old every year…🤮
Interesting point. Jamie was my absolute favorite for Paris and Dean was my least favorite for Rory
Loved the editing of Jamie and deans ex
Thank you! I had a lot of fun making it. :)
Jaime is my favorite out of all of paris boyfriend's he didn't deserve to be treated like that by paris i would had liked to seen him appear in the year in the life as for asher never liked him his relationship with Paris was so wrong
I wondered what your thoughts would be on *AYITL Spoiler Alert*
---
Paris and Doyle's divorce in AYITL but not upset at all you didn't include it. It shouldn't have happened.
I hate that they made their divorce in the mini-series and made Paris limerent after Tristan😤
Jonathon has more problematic moments than the peeing in the pool…gets a lot worse actually. Lol
I love Danny tho. 😊
Oh absolutely! I thought it would be funny choosing that clip as an example, knowing that him peeing in a pool is hardly his worst action. 😆
